Timeless, I am 71 and the advice is spot on. Young energy with enough subtle maturity.
I love your intro. It’s so refreshing to see someone thank the audience for stopping by.
I'm a 65 yr old who recently lost over 100 lbs. I'm in the process of updating my wardrobe and your videos have been very helpful. One issue I still have a problem with is wearing brogues for casual occasions. I've always associated the extra holes and stitching as appropriate for more formal/business wear. Times change and I guess I have to do so as well.
I am enjoying these back to the basics videos. It’s really all you need and we all could do with a reminder periodically.
When I was in high school, 1980's, I worked in a family owned department store. The owners were Jewish Russian immigrants (WWII) that came to our Canadian town. Back in the day, they would make suits made to measure. The other thing is that Mrs Litwin would make anyone look awesome. She had an eye for what looked good on any body type. You would typically come in for a pair of pants, but if Mrs Litwin was working, there would be a good chance that you would leave with pants, shirt, sweater, shoes, etc. It was a running joke in our town. "Oh oh...Mrs Litwin, looks like I'm getting a whole outfit". I wish we still clothing stores with people like that.
There a store like that here in Trinidad, the owner is Syrian
Same story in New Orleans, LA back in the day! If you bought a suit, you couldn't leave without 5 matching shirts, ties, socks and underwear!😎
Here in CNY retail stores are going more and more out of business. And you know, Wal-Mart and Target people generally don't know how to make a person look good. Not saying one can't find nice pieces there though. My ideal place to go with great prices is Boscovs! I just got a nice ensemble without breaking the bank. In fact, im wearing it today to church. My pastor always says i look sharp and that i should give the sermons. Lol.
I remember those days. Recently stopped in at the MensWearhouse in an emergency (lost my tux the day before a wedding) and had some guy giving me pointers on style and fit. His pants were pleated, way too much break, made of poly, and matched only the stain on the collar of his shirt. TG for videos like this.
here in greenhills manila you couldnt leave the store without getting an entire wardrobe of ukay-ukay for a fraction of the price
#Legend I’m 61 and I’ve been watching your channel for a few years now, you really helped me update my look, I now know that I dress age appropriate and still look stylish. I’ve even had comments from complete strangers complimenting on my look, that is thanks you you, I always enjoy your content keep it up the great work.
Great video John! I’m going to 50 soon and I decided to refresh my wardrobe… I followed your guidelines with shoes, casual outfits and sport jackets… very helpful 👍🏻
Yeah this is great. I was out once and saw a gym friend in the grocery store wearing style and I was wearing yard work. Decided right then to ALWAYS look stylish. Why not? Look better, feel better. Good job!
I think your channel should be called 30 over fashion because even as someone in their 30s your advice resonates well with me
As I have already told you previously, I really like your channel. I totally agree with your recommendation of brown brogues and dark denim, a classic, and elegant look. It is a lookI have subscribed to for years, I regularly get compliments on how smart I look. I am not egotistical, but I love to look sharp and presentable, it gives me a greater degree of confidence.
Thank you again for all your content.
Andrew UK.
Once again, great advice. You are spot-on about other ladies commenting about a man's style. I'm not stylish though I take care to wear decent, nicely fitted clothes. My wife says her friend has made complimentary remarks about me while stating that she wished her husband took more interest in his personal appearance. Who knew?!
Thanks so much John for your simple yet effective style tips! The way you present them (from the ground up) is also great and makes it easy to remember. #Legend
I love my quarter zip sweaters in the Fall and Winter months!
250K subscribers!! Congrats John! Great video - very practical tips. I need to pick up some grey and navy slacks and a navy blazer. Thanks John!
I've got to try the sportcoat. I've looked many times but never found one I liked that also fit well or good enough to have tailored. I've got the shoes, blue & gray & charcoal pants, white and French blue shirts, and a stainless steel Fossil watch I bought more than 25 years ago. Oh, and dark blue & black jeans.
Hey John. I really enjoy your videos.
I have used your advice and guidance to rehash my wardrobe.
Keep it up.
Mark from the UK
Thankyou for the great tips! I'd also like to add that another stylistic element is your own in-shape body. Lately, I've been doing 100 push-ups plus others. Not for long, people notice that and asked me what's going on with the bigger guns and stuff. Occasional glances from the ladies were delightful as well.
Light blue shirt is a must for me. I got a Casio with a stainless steel bracelet and it looks great.
That was fantastic!!! I think of myself as having good taste and I generally do those things that look good HOWEVER, you REALLY know how to do it!!! Thank YOU so MUCH!!! And you really look fantastic. You showcase style perfectly. How cool!!!
Absolutely yes on the sport jacket. I wear one a lot, especially with dark jeans. Plus, it's great to have a handy place for your cell phone and glasses :) I almost never wear a suit anymore but wear sport jackets mostly year round.
Perfect Mark! Thanks for watching!
yes i agree , it works if your looking to meet ladies . you stand out in a crowd . gets you noticed .
Just dropped 55 lbs and needed a whole new (post COVID) wardrobe. I’m so glad I found your channel, these tips have been crucial to reforming my look. You rock and I always listen about your sponsors.
Congrats! I've done the same over the past two years, and this channel has helped me rebuild my wardrobe.
Awesome Greg! Thanks for commenting!
Good on you sir. Most of us put some lbs back on. Not too bad for me but still need to 'get back on track'. Cheers.
Well done Greg, truly. I have to drop about 20 lbs and it’s proving a little difficult, I can’t imagine 55. Really inspirational.
Congrats on the weight loss. Never easy, but the pay outs are great! Enjoy the victories!
Thank God I've been redoing my wardrobe slowly but surely over the last couple of years. I've decided to go with non-trendy timeless pieces whenever I add new pieces. I will definitely pick up some brown Brogues (either Idrese or Becket-Simonon). As far as COVID weight gain I put on 12 lbs but luckily its not in the waist. Great vid I'm now a subscriber!
Thank you Dave! Welcome, and thanks for commenting!
Thank you so much. This gives me great ideas on how to improve myself and looks stylish.
Love your videos and your advice. Can’t go wrong with your tips!
I'm turning 40 and now I'm getting into sewing which is a huge turning point to getting into well-dressed fitted clothing since every clothing piece is made differently.
Thank you so much. You were more specific than most of the videos who are more into talking. My mind is now clear. I'm able to decide at last. 👌😊
Great video!! Enjoyed the whole content
Picked up a new pair of Brogues a couple of months ago by Magnanni. Haven’t worn them yet, but i look forward to the pairings i have waiting for them and my Chelsea’s. Also gents, nothing wrong with getting your denim tailored.
Always love your videos and the content... great tips & advice
You r doing awsome job. You changed my lifestyle completely..... Love this channel.
Nice presentation, no pushing of a particular style, just style itself, some great ideas that I will look at again, and take action on. Solid sound advice. Thanks.
As a Vegan, it’s somewhat more difficult to find good Oxford brogues, etc, but your style ideas are solid.
Legend. Thanks for another great video.
I like blue dress shirts (often with patterns) with dress jeans as a white shirt is both more formal as well as being too plain for a simple pants/short combo. On the other hand, a white dress is great when wearing a tie and jacket as it lets the tie stand out and is easier to highlight the jacket (be that a suit, blazer, sports coat).
Great help! Thank you
Those are great tips. Appreciate it!
Legend: I think I am playing catch-up. Anyway, you nailed it again. In the shoe department I am fine. I have quite the selection. Also I made sure I had the dark
washed jeans which have proven to be quite versatile. Because of you I have the basics which have allowed me to expand my wardrobe. You are the men’s fashion whisperer.
Ha! Thank you Roberto!
I'm definitely going to try that light blue shirt. Awesome video.
Thank you!
This video made me a true convert to your channel. Excellent advice on the basics with some subtle kicks in there, too. Thank You!!
Great to hear! Thank you!
Autumn/Winter don’t forget a nice Corduroy Sport coat, a nice medium to chestnut brown, preferably patch pockets with flaps , sack, 3/2 roll lapels with a border stitch and single hook vent, suede elbow patches are nice also. Perfect for gray flannels and knit ties, or jeans and desert boots
Buy a corduroy suit for even more flexibility. But skip the patches unless you’re a history professor from the ‘70s.
Spot-on with light blue shirt and dar blue jeans 👌
Hope to try this brown shoe. Think it's a good idea
Excellent video! All items are spot on!
Hi John, first I would like to thank you for the time you spend helping me look presentable. I'm 74 and married 2 1/2 years. Both of us are widowed and I'm sorry to say your videos came after we were married so I can't thank you for my marriage. I was always worried that the colors I picked out didn't match so I tended to wear black, dark blue, grey etc. Watching your videos helped me dress the age I look, 60's, not the age I feel ,30's. All in all, thank you for the hard work you put into each and every video. Know that you help many.
Thank you!
@ Wayne Baer. I understand how you feel because I turn 84 in 3 weeks, but with Melbourne Australia in virtual continuous lockdown since last Christmas, John's past guidance resulted in a wardrobe full of sound basics. With Spring under way I am looking to apply John's current advice to some Retail Therapy, because I survived 12 weeks in the COVID 19 Intensive Care Ward, and now I would like to get back into the Department Stores, so that I can dress in style for the Christmas season parties. I am sure that your wife would apprecate you doing the same, because by the time Christmas Day arrives the Medical Experts predict that we will be able to return to our usual Lifestyles So dress to really enjoy Christmas. Phil.
@@40OverFashion put some fricken socks on... good gawd... especially over 40... gross
Hi John.... sports jacket: what i discovered for me is a mokka-tone melange , works well with a white shirt.. jeans or lightgrey five pockets....and a little tan on the face.
I like shirts with a little substance, not too thin... that are ironed but a bit wrinkled, no tie... for casual look
Thank you for the tips, John! Stay safe.
Thanks, will do!
Great video John, thanks. Interesting I was going to say I don’t see a lot of white shirts in business but it seems like forever since I have been in an office.
This channel has 250 K subscribers and certain other one has over 1 million. I am slightly baffled. 40 Over Fashion is professional, contemporary, and classic when it needs to be. Always great recommendations with supporting visuals. Well done!
Thank you very much Mitch! Appreciate you my friend!
🤟
LOVE your channel!
Thanks Brian!
Very useful video. I agree with You i'm light blue shirt. White is more common. Good point. And I love to wear a good pair of Derbies. Cheers.
Great vid thanks, really useful and you’ve stopped me wearing sports trainers (sneakers) except in the gym! 👍🏻🇬🇧
I agree with you John. Great videos.
I agree the sport coat jeans combo can be stylish but it’s also easy to get wrong. You should do a video on getting the look right!
Thank you!
John made a video on that exact subject about 4 months ago. Maybe he could link it for you.

As always legend and great content mate 👍
As a 39 year old guy who recently become single because I kinda lost my game, I see this channel as a holy grail.
Thank you! Much appreciated!
Well I stumbled on this vid and I’m happy to know already have all those items or variants of. Just need a little refresh here and there. Just need to wear them more often instead of waiting for a special occasion. Great channel 👍🏿
Thank you Alan!
Excellent choices. Solid advice. Maybe one day a longer version for a complete wardrobe?
Trying to put the right combination together in my 60’s with shirts, pants, shoes & sports jackets. Colors truly matters to the ladies.
Always enjoy these videos...🥂
From Russia with gratitude! Thank you John for job and great recommendations!
While I can say I have everything in this basic kit and more building it over time, I’m still adding more versatility with variations in brown to burgundy shoes for general style wear options. That’s with having a split of colors of thirteen pairs of Black/Brown leather shoes in various styles. It really does take a while, but if one does zero in and focus on the recommendations you say in the video, a person will build a starter style kit faster. However, for me personally the variations of buttoned up Dress Blue shirts remain my most versatile to wear all the time or in patterned light Blue shades. In the early days many years ago, I never quite understood Blazers, Sports Jacket vs Suit Jackets and lost much opportunity to pick up over the years, but ok. I now know the differences thanks to style channels like yours.
Your weaving your own #Legend for helping many men develop that sense of style that no one else ever thought them over their entire lifetime. Keep looking your best and adding Style IQ to any place you style step into, because people notice you when you do far more than everyone else who don’t.
Thank you!
Legend. All timeless suggestions.
Great content. Very helpful. 👍
I agree great video ,dress like that all the time. have lots of dress shoes , nice shirts ,good jeans etc .
1:03 My grandad used to have a pair of shoes exactly like those derbys. I never actually saw him wearing them, but he used to keep them in this little nook at the top of the stairs. For some odd reason I used to be really scared of them when I was little. I used to run down the stairs in terror, thinking that they were following me lol
I am gonna try your thoughts today. Thank you
Thanks John excellent video as always. I have to get a pair of Oxford, Stay safe
Thank you!
Thank you John for your channel I’m a almost 40 year old man and have change my style a lil from my normal wear of big print shirt and jeans to more “grown up” looks my wife has really noticed. #Legend
That is awesome! Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed this. I couldn't get to Conquer watches, unfortunately. I really like that blue shirt you were wearing.

Great video!
Thanks. Great choices for anyone who wants style. 👍
Thanks Howard!
When I decided to smarten up my appearance, I had lost a bit of weight so I pretty much had to buy some clothes that fit properly. The very first Items I got were a brown pair of Brogue shoes, Dark blue Jeans, Oxford Shirt (White & Office Blue) and a Navy Blue Blazer and a nice watch (I decided at the time for a Omega Seamaster 300m - Cost a bit, but it may be a timepiece that I could wear for the rest of my life & I get a little Bond moment every time I check the time, which always puts a smile on my face: Instant morale boost). These core items I still wear frequently 8 years on, because they were high quality (Sorry to brand drop, but I am over the moon on how well they are put together), like Loake shoes, Allsaints Jeans, Hawes & Curtis (Shirts & Blazer) they are still new looking 8 years on and after frequent wear, but I do look after them, especially the shoes to ensure longevity.
I agree, buying quality over quantity pays off every time.
Thanks for commenting! Nothing wrong with spending a little more for the good stuff.

My favourite shoes I have are a pair of brown leather Bugatti zip up ankle boots, ridiculously comfortable and look great. I'm also a big lover of Benetti shirts
Thanks for the tip.
You are crushing it!
I think a great business pen and a really great wallet.... make a subtle statement when used correctly.....

Another great post!
Glad you enjoyed it Jake! Thanks for watching!
Brown RM Williams with dry jeans🤠👍🏻☕️
I'm 5'8" and just over 150 pounds. Had a huge problem finding jeans that fit but I finally found a local brand here in NZ that works really well. They fit me like gloves. Bought three or four pairs just before I retired to make sure I've got enough to see me out. Hopefully the last pair will fall apart just before I pop my clogs.:)
Always enjoy watching. I’m 57 years old. I want to look stylish, but not like trying hard.
Great and helpful advice as usual John. Legend...
Glad you enjoyed it!
Super… very helpful video . Thank you

Although I am in my late 20s, I like your dressing. My choice goes exactly with what you wear. Slowly building up my wardrobe with your suggestions.
