    Man as some one with over 30 watches is so hard not to buy watches what has helped me is to focus on my other hobbies that aren't focused on always buying things and realizing that I was getting out of control and something else that helped was just saving money for things like experiences like saving money to travel to places I want to see that made me just as happy as buying a watch or just buy watches for others that helped the itch of not having a new watch in my collection buying for other is so much fun and seeing them happy seeing them lite up when they see the watch I got them was a true reward in it's self.

    I can “afford” watches mid-level and below, but I get uncomfortable spending significant $$$ on watches. However, fast forward 2 years of buying watches and I’ve lost so much money buying “budget” watches because I’m not satisfied and sell for small losses. I think it’s a great idea to check watch buying regardless of the reason, unless you’re 100% buying the watch you love every time and not just acting on impulse as you said. The other issue I’ve found is many of the watches I’ve bought can’t be tried on first, so I end up keeping them to avoid steep return shipping costs.

    Great video about things we don't often chat about in watch circles. It is very easy to become frenetic in watch buying. All energy and no direction.
    One aspect I have found that brings me more joy than a watch arriving it doing a "pay it forward" and gifting, giving or donating a watch to someone.
    To add to your points, I have learned that just because it is a good deal does not mean I need to buy the watch.

    Its not cheating. Its being financially responsibly and looking out for yourself. Good on you Eve! Regarding the points you made it really makes a lot of sense. Now that I have a few watches myself I don't particularly crave "the next fix" either. If I do buy a watch I will go vintage generally as its both cheaper and they have character which I find is missing in some modern pieces. I absolutely hate wastage and as things currently stand I have a bunch of watches I simply don't wear for one reason or another. I don't want to buy something just for it to end up in the watch box after a week so I too only have one watch I still want to buy before I call it quits for now. As for the channel and your future direction with it... I don't think I watched the channel because of watches. I watched it because it was well made, informative and to the point. wow a WHOLE no-buy year. the willpower needed!
    personally i dont think i'll ever do a no-buy year(i also dont believe in artificially restricting myself). if theres nothing i want then i wont buy. if there is, then i will. however now my collection is, like you, sitting around 30ish watches, i think i will slow down a lot. the peak of my buy-frenzy was nov last year when i bought 7 watches in one month.
    i HAVE seen the thing about people saying "you have so many watches how do u even wear them all?" honestly i see watch collecting like say, collecting stamps or coins. they're in my collection for my enjoyment. even just seeing and knowing they're in the collection brings me joy. being able to actually wear them unlike with a stamp or coin collection, is a bonus, not a must for me to enjoy the collection. afterall some rich people have a huge collection of super expensive watches, why can't i have a collection of affordable watches?
    plus i don't think affordable watches are somehow lesser to an expensive watch, my enjoyment of having one $2000 watch isn't going proportionally scale compared to having 10 $200 watches. if anything i enjoy having the choice and versatility more. of course ultimately i think everyone needs to do what's right for them, but i feel like theres too much judgement thrown the way of anyone who has "too many" affordable watches, with it often being touted as a "newbie mistake" to avoid. in my entire collection of 30+ i think there's maybe 2 watches i wouldn't mind moving on, and one of them is the watch i originally picked up because i needed a watch, that got me into this new hobby, while the other is pretty much the 2nd watch i got after that.
    anyways it's still interesting to see your perspective on the matter. hopefully you'll figure out your next step and your channel can still be focused on watches in some capacity! i wouldn't mind less frequent reviews but of more expensive watches(i might not want to spend money on an expensive watch, doesn't mean i don't appreciate them and i live vicariously through watch reviewers' youtube contents 😂) if you're buying less frequently but buying more expensive stuff, it's just whether making this content is a hobby for you, or something you depend on for a living. happy to still stay along for the ride!

      For me, I guess I don't generally see watches as like stamps/coins to keep for the sake of having but I kind of feel a bit different when it comes to vintage watches. For the modern ones, I just feel so bad about not using them since i don't want to waste money on things that I won't use (or batteries that just run out).

      @@AliasEveWatches so the 7 in one month was in nov, which u can guess means ali express' 11/11 sale AND black friday in the same month. i picked up the pagani design homage of the seamaster ocean planet chrono, their new GMT worldtimer, and a san martin tuna homage in bronze.
      For the other 4 black friday buys, one was the new Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK005. 2nd was a Xeric Trappist-1, 3rd was a Bulova Surfboard A chrono and lastly a Casio A168 in silver. I saved a total of £434, about 39% of what those 4 would have cost at RRP. The Bulova wasn't planned, I have a good relationship with a sales rep in a high street jewellers who always does me good deals(he also sold me a £400 RRP Citizen promaster for £180) so when I went there to buy the Casio and saw the Bulova(RRP £430) on sale(£230) I was tempted. he knocked another £46 off the already discounted price so I went for it.
      I've actually not worn all of them yet. The san martin i bought to wear when i wear my steampunk/pirate outfit(hence the bronze) and ive not had a chance to wear my pirate outfit. the Xeric im saving for a special 1st trip to the science museum, will be in a matching NASA top. I feel there's something very special about bringing the right watches to the right place. Like my AVI-8 Carey Dualtime is part of the AVI-8 Hawker Hurricane lineup, and for the very 1st time I wore it, I went to the RAF museum to see an actual WW2 Hurricane fighter. It was very special getting a picture of the watch with its namesake aircraft in the background!
      I think reflection videos would be a great idea. Many other watch channels also do discussion videos and I enjoy that sort of content a lot! End of the day watches is a hobby and talking about it in any form is always enjoyable.

    Everyone's watch needs are different, and everyone has a right to handle their hobbies however they choose, but right when the watch bug hit me, I talked to my wife about how I felt compelled to buy watches, but I didn't know why. She made a brilliant suggestion, which I hope will keep me forever content. She suggested having only one watch for each recurring occasion, and to identify in what scenarios I thought I would want a watch. Only five occasions came to mind. The self-regulating rule is don't buy another watch unless the watch for one occasion dies, or I'm willing to sell the old watch that the new watch would replace. Here's my list of occasions:
    1. A dive watch that I can wear when my wife and I go kayaking.
    2. A dress watch. Gold with leather strap that compliments a suit.
    3. Everyday luxury. The watch I adore looking at all the time.
    4. A smartwatch. Something cheap that can track steps, monitor heart rate, and be taken camping without fear of breakage.
    5. A Disney watch. We love Disneyland and Disney World, and although everyone hates Invictas, before our next trip, I fully intend to purchase a Micky Mouse watch. I don't give a ---- if no one else likes it. Although I imagine any big Disney fan would think those watches are awesome.
    I would only try to convince my wife I need more than five watches if I could think of an occasion that warrants one. Maybe I'm not a true collector. I don't know. I absolutely love watches, but I'm actually grateful I asked my wife to help me make sense of this oncoming addiction before I sent myself down an addiction rabbit hole that couldn't ever make me happy. I hope this might help someone else.

    No worries! I think you've given it a lot of thought and decided to prioritize really important things in your life. And please do whatever content you feel like doing! You can review other items and sure, maybe you have a few people leave but you will get some new viewers too. A lot of us will stick around.
    What's really changed watches for me is considering how I use them more than just "having them for the purpose of having them". I now like to think of watches as tools that I build a bond with. They come with me on trips, work indoors and outdoors with me, and dress up on nice occasions.
    And from taking them out on trips and using them everywhere, I learned that I don't actually like dive watches and I don't really like bracelets in warm, humid climates. I don't even need a date window. I actually like small quartz watches that slip under shirt sleeves and watches with arabic numerals or stick indices. So I picked two watches that I love and but wouldn't terrify me if I lost them: A lightweight resin field watch and a little high accuracy dress watch. They're the watches I'm using all the time and building a connection with.
    And you mention that one really nice watch you're saving for: Chances are that building that collection gave you a chance to figure out what you really like. :)

    • @AliasEveWatches
      @AliasEveWatches  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I feel exactly the same way. It used to be "having them for the sake of having them" - which is exciting at the beginning but then wears off... until the next hunt! As for dive watches, it was crazy that I've had 5 dive watches pass through my collection but I don't even like the idea of having a "wrist tan line". 😂 but I guess it's ok to have at least 1 that's robust enough for water activities and an affordable resin-based one should be enough.

    Good for you Eve for deciding to make some positive changes in your life and having the discipline to stay with it. I'm really happy for you for sharing this. You never know who you may influence to make positive changes in their life. I've enjoyed both your UA-cam channels for quite some time and I think genuinely if you decided to create content outside of the watch collecting community you would be very successful. I think that bcause your content has it's own artistic value that is original but also fun and entertaining. So if you had a channel just rambling ideas you had about anything I'm sure your audience would enjoy your post's.
    I've found myself weening my appetite for new watches and I think it's more rewarding, or perhaps it's better said more satisfying, to enjoy what you have rather than search for that next great thing. Which is, in it's own way, an unattainable outcome. Well, I've been long-winded enough for one comment. Great video and I hope you reach your goals, what ever they are. There is perhaps nothing more gratifying than seeing the results of your hard work.

    I don't know whether I could hold out for a whole year, but my plan is not to buy any more watches for about six months (the last one I bought is still on its way), so that I can save for some decent hardware to start my own UA-cam channel! I'm really late to this party, which is ironic when you consider the nature of our hobby...🤦‍♂️
    Anyway, all the best with your resolution. Cheers 🍻!

    • @AliasEveWatches
      @AliasEveWatches  Рік тому

      Thanks David! One thing that really helped was setting a time-frame and blankly flat out refusing any temptation to come my way, then if I still wanted it by the end of the time-frame, I'd buy it. I realized that out of all the watches that tempted me in 2022, I only remembered 1 -- which is the one splurge piece I mentioned.
      As for the UA-cam channel, I wish you the best! Prioritize the lighting, audio, and script -- think of the purpose of the video and why someone would click on it, and then make the script. No need to buy expensive equipment, the sunlight and your mobile phone should be enough.

      My phone is good for doing Instagram posts, but I will need a really good camera with decent macro because I am one of those maniacs who takes the backs off his watches to "try to make them more accurate " ; I have tools for this, and a time graph is on the way. Oof Eve, never stack, always double wrist... Stacking is gross :) Very cool idea for this video. I also went through a similar thing in 2022. I also got my grail at the end of the year, a 3861 Speedy. That really put my watch collection into perspective as I find it very difficult to justify wearing some of the watches over my Speedy (or Sinn 556 as a rather distant second). I guess slowing down the growth of your collection is part of the natural process of becoming a more seasoned collector, as it becomes more and more difficult to get truly excited about a new watch and the things that really catch your eye tend to be more more intricate, more refined and just way more expensive.
