- A review of the Academic dress watch prototype by the J&G watches microbrand. The Academic is the third watch to be released by J&G, following the Exciton II dive watch from 2021. Initially, the prototype was supposed to be on loan and I have to return it but the plans MIGHT change so I've tagged the video as sponsored, for transparency's sake.

===========================
I'm sure there are things I missed in the review, so I'll include the reviews from other content creators as it gets posted! That way, you'll get a full picture. Stay tuned.
P.S. I only noticed during editing that the seconds hand looks a bit rough, so i didnt get to include that in the list of cons.
Another thing: Prototypes might go through less QC (im not entirely sure) because they need to be made quickly, so it might be different for the final product!
Great work Eve! I really hope they either let you keep this prototype or send you a final production version to keep once it releases. I dig the design on this one and the case shape. Great movement and finishing, looks classy on your wrist! 😎👍
Thanks Dave!! It really dig the classy yet with a twist look. 😄
Not to shabby of that J&G are going to release can't wait to see what the final production will look like
Thanks for watching! I hope the final production will have better QC. I was told that prototypes tend to be rushed.
At first, I wasn't sure about the design, but It's hard to deny that the black dial looks amazing.
At first, I thought the black dial was the best... and then I saw the reviews from the other channels and it's tough! 😂 I've seen the green, the silver, and the salmon.
Excellent review as always. I particularly enjoyed your description of leather bands and how to know the difference in quality. I hope J&G let's you keep this watch for doing such a wonderful job on the review. You certainly pointed out all the great qualities of this watch while being unbiased and pointing out the few "flaws" this watch has. Well done Eve 😊
Glad it was helpful! And I'm glad you found it a fair review. Regarding straps, I usually avoid the ones labelled as "genuine leather" and go for either top grain or full grain leather, even if it's a bit more pricey. Thanks so much James!
Thanks for reviewing, it looks a great watch. Regarding pulling out the crown, by putting a nail under just one side, the crown is pushed against the crown tube on the other side. This lateral force will stress the stem and make it more difficult.
Thanks for watching! Do you mean, I have to make sure i'm pulling it out with minimal lateral force?
@@AliasEveWatches Yes, ideally get a nail under both sides, it should make it easier, but it may be a stiff movement too. I enjoyed your video and will subscribe now 👍
@@dunderhay9169 I see I see. Thanks so much! I've tried with 2 nails but I was still worried with my nails. 😅 It loosened up over time though!
Great job with the review Eve, wonder if they are going to be getting more ar coating on the crystal? Didn’t look like the prototype had much. Sharp looking watch indeed, and for a good price, and the leather strap is definitely nice. Great balanced and thorough review!
Thanks Chris! I'm not sure about what else is going to change. Perhaps if more people clamor for more AR coating, James and Gary might make that happen. 😀 I feel like the Vario leather strap has spoiled me! Everything else now feels like a let down. Thanks so much for watching!
Splendid review, Eve. This is the kind of quality I hope to achieve when making videos.
Everything is nice about the watch - except for the Roman numerals, but that's just personal taste.
Thanks very much; looking forward to your next one! 😅
Thank you kindly! The video took a long time from scripting to editing, for sure and I'm really glad someone noticed the quality. 😀😀😀 I'm happy you enjoyed the review. Thanks again, David!
Great video Eve 👏 I’m sure this watch will be a success for both James and Gary.
Thanks for watching Miguel! I wish them the best of luck. 😄
Nice watch ❤, I have a lot of dress watches as well.
Thanks Bill! I like dress watches best. 👔
It looks like a pretty nice watch! It suits you and your style well! This does look like it could work in 1920 at an elegant event! I like the lug hole options and it makes sense why it isn't drilled. Miyota 9000's series movements are fantastic movements but the novelty of a see through case back gets old and then I would have preferred a better water resistance rating... Especially if I was to put this bad boy on a nato and use it like an Explorer. Awesome review as always Eve!
Thanks as always, Johan! The drilled lug hole kind of disrupts the lines on the lugs when viewed from the side. Plus, with the Vario quick release spring bars, having it drilled was unnecessary. On using it as a field watch... I guess it could work! 😅
The dimensions are almost exactly the same as the Hamilton Khaki mechanical. Maybe the most comfortable watch I own.
That's awesome! I know that's an affordable-grail for some people so it's nice to know that there are some similarities. 😄
I like the watch but was disappointed when I saw the seconds hand was not capped and the J&G logo lost its original brackets.
Really? I kind of liked the simplicity of the no bracket logo. 😅
Just found your channel excellent work clear and concise
Thanks a lot! 😁
🤗❤️ great review Eve🥰 I have the Exciton 2 and it's very much in my rotation,I'm very tempted 🤗
Thanks for checking out my review! 😄
Nicely done Eve. Wearing the salmon dial today and really enjoying it so far. Thanks for the video :)
Thanks Bob! I'm looking forward to your review of the salmon one. 😄
Great Video Alias!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😃
Thanks for the review. We have 3 Excitons (my wife has a 1st version Exciton, and I have a black and a blue Exciton II), will likely be on the hook for 2 Academics. She wants one...and, I think I do as well. Cheers from Atlantic Canada!!!
That's a lot of J&G's! James and Gary will be happy for your support for sure. 😁😁😁 Which colors are you planning to get for the Academic? Cheers! 🥂
@@AliasEveWatches White for me, baby blue for my wife. We were married with our Excitons, think a 1st yr anniversary Academic will happen.
@@BCallum That's so sweet that you've got J&G watches to signify special events! Are you friends of James? (Since you mentioned you were from Canada)
@@AliasEveWatches No, I've never met him or Gary. Just social media connections
Amazing review! I’m more of a tool watch guy but this does look good. i wonder what the competition are?
In the affordable category, the Orient Bambino comes to mind... but the crystal and the movement are on a lower tier. And I guess vintage? Thinking about it from a budget-watch-enthusiast point of view, these are the competition.
Great review, Eve, thank you 😊👍. Glad lug holes won't be drilled through (at least that's what I think you said). Watch is great looking, just don't think it suits my personality.
Thanks Scott! I think the hole disrupts the lugs especially with the chamfered edges. I think it's a good thing to remove it. 😁 Thanks for checking out the review!
The watch itself is quite nice but the J&G logo really doesn't do it for me.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching 😄
Is there a link for the actual kickstarter?
They haven't launched it yet as of now. :)
Huh, I think you nailed the steampunk aesthetic of the face of the watch Eve. The price is definitely reasonable given the original design and the leather strap (nice explanation on what full grain means btw). Did the reflections on the crystal feel a bit annoying in person too or is just from the filming?
I think maybe from the filming, because when I was wearing it, it didn't show me my own reflection like how it was with the Baltany W10 (sapphire crystal with black dial). I didn't have problems with seeing the time when I was wearing it. Perhaps with the filming, I really wanted to highlight the reflection/shine on the hour markers and hands, so most of my footage were taken from angles with most light. 😅
@@AliasEveWatches Thanks for the update Eve. I am a sucker for crystals that basically vanish no matter the lighting conditions. How reflective the crystal is is one of the first things I tend to notice on a watch.
It honestly rubs me the wrong way that they had you pay for shipping on a review piece. You gave a thoughtful review that was generally quite positive. Sure good on them for making a seemingly great value watch with original design, but I’d say you did a good job getting viewers to be interested in it and is basically free marketing for them. Granted they’re not some huge corporation, you’re in the business of reviewing watches, and it seems fair if they let you keep the watch (or at the very least get a production model of your choice). I’m sure I’m overreacting here, but just kinda struck a sour note for me. Great review as always!
Oh no, there's a misunderstanding. I volunteered to pay for the shipping! I wanted to use this forwarder service to facilitate the import to the Philippines. That way, I would get it faster and I didn't have to worry about customs holding my package. The other reviewers had theirs covered by Gary. I got mine 2-3 weeks earlier than the rest so I was able to publish my review earlier than everyone else. 😆 Regular deliveries to the Philippines might take months and I'd have to pay much more for customs to release the package. That's why I volunteered to pay for it, so less risk and less fees for me.
Thank you so much for the concern and for your kind words!
I should have explained it in the video. Initially, I was going to add the reason but I cut it out thinking it was unnecessary for the viewer.
@@AliasEveWatches Hey thanks for clarifying the situation, that makes sense! I was sure I was missing something here as I like Gary's channel too and he seems like a stand-up guy. I doubt others needed the clarification like me :-)
@@entropicallydriven Gary and James are both great people, for sure! And I'm really grateful for the opportunity to review the Academic. 😄
You live in the Philippines? 😮 I lived in Cebu City for 4 years ❤
Oh wow, 4 years! What brought you to Cebu? 😁
@@AliasEveWatches My mum is Filipino 😊
@@walkaroundwatches 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Personally i don't care for it & believe it's a hard sell.
But wish them the best of luck .
I agree, it'll be tougher than the Exciton II. I think the Exciton was on another level.
It took them a year to design that? Lol
You have to understand, this went through a lot of iterations. Plus, the designer is an engineer by profession - for sure a very busy person.
Hate to burst your bubble - but this is a dressed-up field watch 'style' and therefore borrows from a "military-esk" vibe. The twin lug spacing is key to this style. Is it 'dressy'? Yes. But is it a DRESS WATCH? Ahhh...m;aybe... I suppose that is personal perspective.
I guess it could be a dressy, field watch somehow! 😄 Thanks for watching! I'm glad you stumbled on to this channel.
@@AliasEveWatches Please review some chronograph watches. NOT chrono 'STYLE' watches - but the REAL thing PLEASE!! Especially if they are small enough to be a WOMAN's watch. I have had a true love for them all of my life but they are usually too BIG for a woman's wrist.
@@BarbaraA.MertzRN-CCRN For chronograph watches, there's 2 movements in the affordable world: the Seiko Mecaquartz and the Seagull ST19 movement. 😄 I've reviewed 2 affordable chronographs: the Furlan Marri in 38mm and the Seagull 1963 in 38mm. I think 38mm is a great size for women's wrists! I'll add the links to these in the subsequent comments in a while...
@@BarbaraA.MertzRN-CCRN Furlan Marri Mecaquartz: ua-cam.com/video/63SjoDXJGZg/v-deo.html (right now, maybe not so affordable anymore since prices have gone up)
Seagull 1963 in ST19 (one of my earlier non-speaking videos): ua-cam.com/video/1itvAVaEL6k/v-deo.html
@@BarbaraA.MertzRN-CCRN If these designs aren't to your liking, there are plenty of other options with the mecaquartz or the ST19, you'll eventually find something that you'll like.
Well, three different fonts on the dial, also I can't stand roman numerals, they always look assymetrical, the movement is plain ugly and the window adds to the thickness. The Exciticon was very well recieved despite having a name sounding like a marital aid but this isn't that.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Hopefully, the James & Gary will see this and take your feedback into account.
The review is good as always. But the watch itself has pretty awful design. And that at close to 400$?
Thanks Cyrus! I hope you're doing well now. Is your home town in a much better situation?
@@AliasEveWatches Hello! I'm surprised you remember haha No, unfortunately it's still occupied by Russia, but I hope this year it will be won back again. P.S. about the watch, I didn't know it has Miyota 9k+ series inside, so that might justify the price a bit better, but I don't think the design is an every-man's choice still. Also, the loud rotor is a "feature not a bug" of most series 8k and 9k movements. I think it's cool, but some people hate it
@@rumatadestora Of course, I remember! 🤣 But so far, you and your family are safe? Like, no threat to physical safety?
@@AliasEveWatches yes, we are safe in another city in Ukraine. Thank you!🙂
Best video UA-cam video ever! Amazingly everything is perfect nice and pleasant just wow
Thank you so much for your kind words!!! It makes me really happy. 😄
