I really liked your intro and how you explored other artists self portraits and what that even means. And the transition to your eyes was really cool 😎
Your narration is very smooth and your language is thoughtful and poetic.
The painting is looking really nice, looking forward to seeing how it develops and how you further experiment.
I like the way you capture specific moments and convey the emotion through your storytelling and filmmaking. Thanks for sharing ☺️

I was going through one of the toughest days, a cousin who I consider a little brother just passed from a motorcycle accident, my mom had a heart attack from receiving the news and though she’s stabilized at the hospital it’s been really difficult finding a peace of mind… this brought so much calmness and peace it’s gorgeous and the way you record the angles catching the sunset it’s the cherry on top. Thank you for all you do because it truly got me through such a rough night

Fascinating to see the work progress through changes in ambient light. This is a good training exercise for any painter, because studio light (or wherever the painting site may be) is not always under the full control of the artist.

Even just the way it looked then was gorgeous. The finished artwork is absolutely incredible, inspiring, stunning and truly beautiful, Jess. You’re so talented that even your sketchbooks are masterpieces and unique little works of art.
You’re so talented however, it goes beyond that. The raw passion, love you have for art, the process, the way you think, feel, the way you gaze upon your canvas feeling so much emotion that it actually resonates through your videos, it all is indescribable.
Watching your process, watching you get lost in the moment, your confident brush strokes, your energy, the way you look upon your canvas with such adoring, motivated, freeing, loving, passionate and happy eyes is very special to witness.

For my final work for my BA I did 5 gestural self-portraits. I studied a bit about Frida Kahlo while doing this, and I came across this quote if hers:
I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.”

You can tell the final painting will be really amazing, but it's great you are sharing the beginning stage with us. The choice to use the large brush and loose washes of white and sepia is really inspired and is a great foundation and the fact you are working on such a large scale too as it allows for the painting process to become really immersive. I have been invited to create a self portait for an exhibition later this year and originally was creating it digitally, but when you posted the first video of you drawing your self portrait on the panel,It inspired me to make a change. So I am also now painting my self portait on a large panel, big enough for he painting to be lifesized. I've never painted a self portrait before, but your origianal video really inspired me to try it .I had to have my entire left arm amputated to the shoulder this year due to health complications,so I am having to get used to a new physicality, and the invitation for the exhibition came not long after this happened. So creating the self portrait is a way for me to come to terms with this and it's really working. I'm also using a tonal underpainting, but after reading about Rembrant's portraits I am using greens as my under painting, to hopefuly give more luminance to the skin tones when I move onto the next stage of the self portrait. The self portait you created in High School is stunning,to portray your self as a human ying annd yang was really inspired. I love that you are using a tecnique from history for the underpainting, but using it in a contemporary way. A self portrait is a way to re-coconnect to ourselves,re-engage with ourselves and we can learn things about ourselves as we are creating them,it's like holding up a mirror to ourselves through our creativity.. I have a few books on Self portaits and I have been looking through these as I'm working on my self portrait. If you want to read more about this genre of art, here are six that I really reccommend that I think will inspire you as well (as they have inspired me)
500 Self Portaits by Julian Bell published by Phaidon Press
Self Portraits by Ernst Rebel published by Taschen
The Self Portrait-A Cultural History by James Hall published by Thames & Hudson
The Self Portrait by Natalie Rudd published by Thames & Hudson
The Self Portrait-From Schiele To Beckman by Tobias Matter published by Prestel
Seeing Ourselves-Women's Self Portraits by Frances Borzello published by Thames & Hudson..
Can't wait to see the next video as you carry on painting this self portrait, thank you for inspiring me and for sharing this exciting creative journey with us. (matt)

Hey Jess firstly I'd love to say that you are an inspiration to me because you taught me to paint from real and I have learnt alot from you, like paint from real, trust the process, 100 heads etc..... Not countable and i can say that even I'm an artist i do create art and i love it i love to see my art grow day by day and i promise you helped alot in it. And the question.. what make a you feel free while creating?
My answer to it would be that, I think art is a gift by God, and when God gifts you something so trust it and just go for it, and he won't let anything wrong happen, and if something wrong happens it's a lesson for future. Second one do you have fun while creating? Yes! Definately because art is a part of me and when I express a part of me I feel happy to see it alive outside me....

WOW!!! your "equilibrium" self portrait is beautiful and amazingly well done.
and the one you're working on now, is looking great, too. I agree, a really good start. =)
Abstracts, and splatters help me "loosen up" and be more "Free"... also, if I am using less expensive supplies, I don't worry so much about "wasting" stuff....
When painting, I often find myself "lost in the story that's being told"... and I often will sing along to my favourite songs - which help me have fun during the process.

Hey Jess, really love the paint dripping, it looked amazing on the collab, and fits perfectly with the sepia tones in this piece.
I'm also really positively confused and in awe of all the layers you purposely use. When I paint with colours i tend to strive for the minimum.
I'm really stoked, as to how the painting will look in the next video.
What makes me feel free while creating...
I am a professional car painter, while repairing a car to it's original state, there is not much freedom. Whether its fixing dents, or spraying on paint, there is a fixed process, and I can't just apply any colour I wish. That never made me feel restriced though, but either eager to learn, or proud if my ideas works out. For me it is the confidence I've built, after years of practice, being able to solve the riddle that whatever I work on poses.
So I guess, it's being able to use all the knowledge I've gathered, leaves you with simply enjoying the ride. And while you enjoy yourself, you are the most free.
Am I having fun while painting ?
There are few things in life, that are more enjoyable then painting and music combined.
