Maybe you can talk about why you started your painting the way you did in this video? I know each surface is different but I myself have not painted on wood canvas/panels before. It'd be cool and helpful to know. Also, I wanted to say I'm so excited for this new painting!! I can't say it enough but you truly continue to be such an inspiration. It made me so happy seeing your process in starting this painting. I loved when you revealed that you'd be doing a self portrait. I'm not on your level but I actually bought my first big canvases maybe a month ago & I plan to do a self portait on one of them. So I love that you as one of my fave artist is doing one too. So sorry for this long paragraph but the drawing is beautiful for the painting. I truly can't wait to see how this painting turns out!

i am so stunned to see the sketch....can you please explain how you make portraits which exactly resembles like their reference...... and i wanted to say that i love your videos in which you talk with us , create a basic sketch thinking what to do , like you did in your last video (creating my sktchbook cover ). that makes us feel like we are sitting next to u and watching your complete process.
i wanted to add, that i am so impressed how you are able to run patreon, do all the extra stuff for that. run UA-cam, film your process for every part of your life, and sketch all the time, and paint and do those prints. Your time management and accountability is insane and something i wish i knew how to do.

Jess, your video is great. Matilda reminds me of my beloved cat Annabelle, who was by my side for 19 years. She traveled with me across the country by plane many times from Rochester NY to Malibu CA and to Charlotte NC… always under the seat in front of us… she had such a calming demeanor as well as extra toes. Her fur was a shade or two darker than Matilda’s. She always was around me no matter what I was doing… your videos with her always bring a big smile to my face. It’s so remarkable how cats can affect people the way they do.

I LOVE you Jess. Tulips means perfect or Deep love. Thank you to your mum for the tulips. And your giving of LOVE to your Princess. Tulips are one of my favourite flowers after roses, and chrysanthemum, lilies, carnations, forget me not and Daisies . As Roses was the first my mum and dad gifted us, me my brother, and little sister. in plates individually . Chrysanthemum was gifted to me by a friend at the Uni. They were huge bouquet flowers I love them so much.

This by far is my FAVORITE Jess Karp video to date. The last segment was emotional for me. I will be teaching art this next year to K-8 and I'm about as nervous as you were beginning a self-portrait. I think you mentioned this piece becoming an oil painting. Since I'm new to oil painting, I would love to see how you clean up afterwards such as safe cleaning and disposal of oily paper towels, rags and dirty containers, plus cleaning the palette and brushes. Thanks!

Have you done a video about how you are able to paint in your sketchbooks? or how you keep smearing from happening for other mediums? i would be very interested in that. This video is lovely. i love watching you do what you do best.
No, but I basically put tracing paper to protect sketchbook paintings in between each page! And if it’s a medium that does longer I leave it to fully dry before closing but usually don’t use oil in sketchbooks. Just acrylic, gouache and watercolor that dries to touch very quickly.
