Fun fact: The cryptogram at the end of the episode translates as *'HAPPY NOW, ARIEL?'* Alex Hirsch's twin sister Ariel badgered him into making an episode about a supernatural boy band. Alex compounded the joke by having Sev'Ral Times being voiced by Lance Bass of N-SYNC, who was one of Ariel's favourite boy bands growing up. Bonus: Ariel actually makes a cameo in the episode as the girl who says "He was talking to ME!"
Alex Hirsch said that he wanted it to be clear that Robbie was completely unaware of the hidden mind-controlling message. To showcase that Dipper was wrong to go out of his way to make Wendy single again because his jealousy clouded his judgment.
I also heard somewhere that the hidden mind-controlling message is also, well, not really a thing. Like it doesn't actually work, even in the context of the show! Which kinda make senses since this is the first and only time this season that Stan believes Dipper! :p
Makes sense. He was more freaked out than angry when he found out. Probably was told like. "Hey this song will help you keep your girlfriend" and bought into it without further question. Robbie is an ass 90% of the time but he ain't no mastermind of evil.
The second half of that is stupid. Nothing in the actual show suggests that jealousy’s behind anything. If that was really the message, they should’ve just made Robbie an pure, sweet guy.
a few spoiler-free things, Alex Hirsch's twin sister Ariel begged him to make an episode about a supernatural boy band, so he made this episode for her. The cipher at the end says, "happy now, Ariel?" This whole episode was a gift to his sister. He also got Lance Bass to do the voices of some of sev'ral times since Ariel really likes Lance Bass Ariel actually voiced the line right here: 5:20
I read, that, when he intended to do such an episode (with a supernatural boy band), Ariel suggested that Lance Bass should be one of the voices, since she was obsessed with him at Mabel's age. It was also a surprise for her from her brother, to voice this scene together with Lance Bass.
"Finally, a good reason to punch a teenager in the face!" Not only one of my favorite Stan quotes, but let's be honest, most of us wanted an excuse too.
The older I get, the less patience I have for teenagers. Feeling the increasing disconnect between young people is actually probably my least favorite part about getting old 😕 I know, objectively, that being a teenager is hard, but I just don't get them anymore. So yeah, totally get Grunkle Stan's enthusiasm XD
Fun fact: Alex actually said that Wendy is bisexual so she has dated girls not only boys. Is just that mabel only asked about boys that she dated back in the Gideon episode.
“So you’re telling me you’ve been cloning countless blonde guys that all look very similar to each other and who at any moment could be replaced by another clone? Wow, that sounds like a great thought process!” -Philip after watching this episode and deciding to start making grimwalkers
i think alex hirsch said at one point that he wanted to communicate that robbie actually had no intention of hypnotizing wendy and that the “hidden message” actually didn’t work, but it didn’t come across too well in the actual episode. he did lie to her and claim that he wrote it himself when he actually stole it from another band, so i’d say that’s reason enough
[SPOILERS -- LOOK AWAY!!] We defend Stan with the benefit of knowing what happens in future episodes. But just because we longtime fans of Gravity Falls love Stan doesn't mean we should push that opinion on Elijah. Distrusting Stan is COMPLETELY valid. He's a great character, but he's also a creepy, sketchy, dishonest, violent old man with a mile-long rap sheet. None of what we learn about him later on changes that. And I think it would be nice, JUST ONCE, to watch someone react to this show who's still appropriately suspicious of him by "Not What He Seems."
All the boy band members are really identical. He's been cloning them and their possible replacements. This really reminds me of Belos and him making multiple grimwalkers. I still can't get over that episode from The Owl House.
If I remember correctly, Alex Hirsch has said in the past that there wasn't actually a mind control message on the CD, Wendy really did just like the song.

And Elijah, fun fact, I don’t know if you remember but in that episode it was basically like a gravity falls crossover, which is ironic since I think Matt Braly was one of the writers or animators of the show I don’t remember.
Alex got so many notes from the editors on what to remove. Most of it got kept because he questioned their intelligence regarding its removal. So weird tree kissing? In there because of that!
13:00 You should hear about all the stuff Disney cut out of the show. Alex Hirsch goes into how hard it was to even make Gravity Falls because of all the random and weird stuff Disney wanted to cut and remove and censor. Gravity Falls had lots of issues like that because it was primarily adult-themed with the episodes, plots, and characters.
"switch to girls" I don't know if anyone's told you, but the show's creator Alex Hirsch pretty much confirmed Wendy is bisexual on social media a while back (unfortunately not something Disney would have let him say in the show- he's also been quite vocal in his complaints about Disney censorship).
Fun fact to explain the weird bits in this show that Disney allows, in an interview, the creator said they would specifically right jokes and bits they knew wouldnt be allowed, so that they wouldnt cut the ones they wanted, either way tho, I'll never understand Disney's choices
Fun fact, the secret message at the end reads ‘Happy now Ariel?’ It says that because the creators sister Ariel, who was the inspiration for Mabel, was a huge n sync fan back in the day and he got one of them to voice the sevral timez band. She stated she was happy with the episode, that and she got to meet the guy

But he insisted on most of them to keep them in, arguing with Disney about it until he got what he wanted. This should explain some of the things that were in this show that Disney let him keep in
"Switch to girls" -- so fun fact, the creator of the show confirmed on Twitter that Wendy is bi. But this was before Owl House, so there was no way they could get away with a same-sex relationship on Disney Channel at the time.
if given the choice between having to watch the lumity kiss 100 times or having to watch that end credit scene of the boy band guy kissing the tree 10 times, i’d choose the lumity kiss. that end credit scene is just uncomfy lmao
I'm pretty sure one of Wendy's exes is a girl. Can't remember which one. So she is at least bi-curious. Alex Hirsch lamented that he didn't give Wendy enough focus, but we will *definitely* get more of her.
When you're finished with the series, there's a video of Alex Hirsch reading off some of the exchanges between himself and Disney regarding things they wanted him to cut. It is full of silliness.

OMG YOURE SO RIGHT. wendy should date girls. she's every wlw's dream she's a total badass
Well, Alex Hirsch has implied that Wendy could be bi.
You can really see the influence of Homestar Runner co-creator Matt Chapman in this episode. 🙂
“That’s funny, making fun of how boy bands all look the same.”
H m m
Also, I swear I saw a clone or twin of Stan in that one episode. The guy that peeked out of his winter cabin
Seeing how they were time traveling, it probably was just Stan from the past.
Only two more episodes until you know who appears!
2:28 - *“Yes…”* - _"Maybe I should see other people."_ - *“YES!”*
Notice how she said "Maybe *_I_* should see other people," not "we". After all, it's not as if _Robbie_ could find someone else to tolerate him without supernatural help.
Robbie being an utter sleazebag this episode is retroactively made even sleazier by the fact that he is voiced by T.J.Miller. I guess the casting was really on-point there…
Wendy is supposed to be bisexual, so girls are an option. Disney just wouldn't let it be included in the show at the time. The boy making out with a tree was fine though.
Fun fact: Lance Bass of N*SYNC voiced the members of Sev'ral Tymes.
Several timez will return briefly to do probably the best joke in animated history.
