Original video: • LEPROUS - The Sky Is R...
Original Drummer is Baard Kolstad.
Song and video credit to Leprous not me!
IIRC, Baard said the placement of the China is so that he isn't tempted to play it too much / overplay it.
Gottcha well since two of you have pointed this fact out Im going with you must be correct. I actually removed my china cuz of similar reasons lol.
Not surprised you were distracted by the vocals in equal part to the drums, lol. Generally considered to be one of the best duos in prog today 👌
Yeah both are very powerful!
One of the most majestic compositions of all time!!!! The whole thing: drums, song, guitars, you name it... A masterpiece.
Man, you mention Haken, but you didn't already know about Leprous?!
The two bands are basically twinned in my mind, they tour together all the time and are good friends.
Other Leprous tracks I love are The Valley, Illuminate, Rewind.
The drummer is called Baard, he started off on drum kit afaik, and spent a lot of his teens busking on the streets of Norway with his drums.
I agree with you on the "what prog needs to be". I can definitely appreciate AAL and other technical bands like that, but I just need some more groove and emotion in music personally. Leprous does that perfectly for me.
Einar also sings on Haken's "The Architect" from the Affinity album.
Mmm thatd be cool to checkout...Thanks for telling!
To be Honest ive onl heard "the Mountain" album Im a little behind the times.
Leprous became my favourite band past year, but I think AAL has some really good songs, which make me emotional. Also Im more and more into DT and DT.
Just my fave band ever. This track is *insane* live.... I'd try any of their back-catalog as it's all good stuff and there's plenty of variety in there as well. Check out some of Baard's other drum playthroughs as they're all great (Bonneville is pretty awesome).
Wow watched it just now cuz of your comment and its like a master class in hihat dynamics super unique touch hes got!
"4/4"
It's a 4/4 slash 11/8 polymeter. 4/4 on the hands, 11/8 on the bass drum.
This is easily my favorite reaction to this song. Very down to earth and genuine while still being knowledgeable about what's going on (and a great sense of humor too). I also like the commentary on prog overall at the end, which I feel similarly about (I have a rough time getting into Animals as Leaders because they can get so abstract). Based on this and a few of your other videos I've watched too I'm subbing.
Also completely agree about that last third of the song, when I first heard it it felt like my coolest nightmares were replaying in my mind as I was listening. So apocalyptic and awesome.
Awesome comment thanks! Yeah im trying to be down to Earth. Im sure you know the Aristocrats? Thats basically one of the instrumental only bands that Ive been able to get fully into. New video up for Castaway Angels today. Check it out when you can.
@@ryandietzenbach233 I actually haven’t heard the Aristocrats, I may give them a look! And I absolutely will
That sound in the end is a cello!
brb learning cello!
sometimes they play it with synth when Raphael is not available, but it's not the same because it lacks that precise intonation to quarter(?) tones
I always thought it was a clown honking its nose
This is probably one of my favourite songs of all time. That outro makes me feel like i'm floating alone through space. Some interstellar shit
Their drummer Baard Kolstad started out as a street performer, tons of videos of him on UA-cam. He plays for another more traditional prog band called Rendezvous Point. Definitely worth a listen another great vocalist.
"okay, we all appreciate a good quiet time... especially when its .. filled with the same complexity .." lmao that got me pretty good!
Niceee! thanks. Be sure and checkout my new Haken video!
yeah a new video!!! thanks for this dude!!!
More to come!
this is the burst of positivity i needed today 🙏🏼🥁🎼🎆🤔😳😱😏🤘🏼🔥
Thanks! Hope it helps!
If I recall, his background is actually as a prog-kid (Dream Theater fan) street-drummer who had a street-drumming video go viral for a bit.
Small world! thats cool. Any chance you know where to find said viral video? it would make for a good reaction video.
@@ryandietzenbach233 ua-cam.com/video/ZuOiqbungqI/v-deo.html 😊
Got to have a one to one lesson with baard in London. Incredible drummer and really sound dude.
Enjoyed your take! Great job!
I think that China is so far back so he could work out his other muscle groups or something LOL
It's an amazing band, easily my favorite these days, especially among prog. Their vocalist is indeed incredible, their latest single "Castaway Angels" could give you idea just how much
Thanks for the vid mate
You're welcome! Since making this video ive listened to several more of their songs and yea castaway angels be totally awesome. Do you agree with my distaste of the Astonishing by Dream Theater ? I was super not into the story of it.
the classical link is the mother of Einar (vocals) ^^ btw Einar is the first composer - and baard shine very much on his songs s2
But dos Baard have a classical link himself? like in school perhaps?
Thanks to you I've been hearing the drums in songs way more now
Niceeeeeeee they the most important,,,...........!!!!!
You can totally play a drinking game to how many sticks he uses in that playthrough haha
YES lol
it is nice to see you on video again
the song is 11/8 fyi.
I really love watching reaction videos of Baard. He's insanely skilled and talented. My favorite thing about him is how loose he is when playing. I've seen some people complain about the way he pops out the pinky sometimes but who even cares when he can do THIS. If it works, it works. I place this dude super high up on my list of the greatest drummers of all time. Anyway, I really enjoyed your commentary! Earned yourself a new subscriber! I was genuinely interested in what you had to say!
Thanks a ton more videos on the way! and yeah all that matters at the end of the day is what you can play with your technique and not how it looks or if its politically correct.
I think learning this one would be well worth your time, even if it doesn't lead to a drum cover video. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do!
Porcupine tree will always be one of my favorite bands! Look forward to seeing your cover
PT the best band.
Great reaction Ryan!! Baard is a great drummer, if you wanna do another Leprous song, do Slave (Live at rockerfeller plaza). BTW, totally agree with you about Dream Theaters Astonishing! First listen to CD1 was the only one.... CD2 I never listened to since the album came out!! Also you MUST check out the band Dirty Loops!! Start with the song "Work Shit out" You won't be disapointed! Greetings from Sweden!
MAKING A VIDEO ON THAT THIS WEEK BECAUSE OF YOUR COMMENT!
Is the china not a sound thing. So it's lower volume in the mix by being away from the mike?
Solid idea actually yeah could be that.
He places it back there to not get tempted to hit it all the time, he has said so in interviews lol.
"Dude, when he's going to be 60, he's not going to be throwing baseball with his grandkids"
"I like having nightmares"
Are you okay?
Of course not, we are appreciating Leprous, we are all depressed
Do a cover of it!
Just found your channel, great content man 🤘🤘 I’m a fellow prog fan and drummer, so excited for more
Thanks a ton! Im just starting my channel but comments like this will really help me to keep my momentum so thanks! What are your favorite prog bands right now? (maybe ill put them in a video)
@@ryandietzenbach233 For sure! It's unique to both have covers and reactions, especially all with a busier editing style/humor. Keep it up!
BTBAM, Opeth, The Dear Hunter, and Haken are some favorites of mine!
do you take reaction requests?
I certainly read them and consider yes lol
@@ryandietzenbach233 Are you able to react to The River by Austin Mo? 🤔
Us norwegians don't throw baseballs anyhow, so no worries there :D
LOL niceeeeeee
lmao, "you're gonna leave me here- make me think about what I've done"
China is far back to make space for the overdub guy
The song is also in 11/8
The song's in 11/8 or 11/4, yeah. Although he's said that the china is far back so he isn't tempted to play it during fills.
Seems likley
Seems even more likely...I remove toms and splashes monthly for the same reason. In myyyyyyy opinion 4/4 , 4/4 , 3/4 I think is what I would think in...jk only trying to be a pain 11/8 probably best given the fast ish tempo
Jumping into the comments to help bully you into covering this (or checking out some other Leprous track you might want to eventually cover)!
Nice I always need a bullying! What is the most challenging Leprous song to cover in your opinion on drums? I'll consider that one I suppose.
@@ryandietzenbach233 his playthrough of "moon" is rather impressive. Also give "illuminate" a go
I could be wrong but I think this isn't in 4 so much as it's in 11.
My god. You're so right about a movie like Mission Impossible. Ahahah
Lol Yeah...btw mission impossible 7 may 2022
8:22 You missed the miss.
Yeah he like missed and only proved my point further about the placement lol.
11/4
Indeed.
Leprous is such a good & diverse prog band. Check out- Cast Away angels for a very pretty song OR the Price for more of a straight ahead riffy song.
It is not a big deal, so I don't want to come off as correcting you but it is pronounced "lep-russ" like the disease.
Ill do a reaction to one of those soon thanks for mentioning!
Yeah the lady that I inserted there said it correct for me correct?
I agree with you about current state of prog, but I think that's viable to mainly DT, Periphery and Animals as Leaders. They're showing off their abilities on the instruments and music takes a back seat. Leprous is not like that, so enjoy.
Yeah ive checkout out other songs and it seems they continue not to be too much about acrobatics. Also I should have brought up the Aristocrats in this video its a perfect example of a music first but chops happen to come out super not on purpose. Would you agree?
I don’t agree that the music “takes a back seat” with Periphery or AAL. Especially not periphery since they are way more thematically oriented with many of their projects, and definitely with P4. For AAL, the music can be very acrobatic, but their melodies and harmonies definitely make a lot people connect emotionally to their sound. In fact I would argue that a lot of fans of AAL really enjoy not only the technical aspect but the musical choices made. I particularly love weightless because of how it makes me feel not because of the techniques applied. That’s just my opinion anyway.
Pleas react to scardust- addicted or gone
Also for really crazy drums try arch echo- immediate results!
Ill check them out and get to it at somepoint!
Baard is phenomenal. As is Einar (the vocalist) and the entire band. They toured with Haken, by the way. There’s an awesome 12 year old who covered this song, that’s worth a watch on your own time.
ua-cam.com/video/e6xy0oz_-b8/v-deo.html
idk what that "sound" is but it reminds me of playing a guitar with violin bow
2:01 He's already synced with baards mind
Yeah Lol wild. its like watching Tenet.
@@ryandietzenbach233 Wait, this wasn't Tenet?
@@tennenyt5311 niccceee
I really felt your reaction missed some key moments in this playthrough, mainly because you were so eager to comment staring at the camera.
Soon after you pointed out the weird placement of the China, Baard literally missed one hit and you missed it because you were speaking.
Nice reaction, though.
Bro. React to some Opeth.
Speaking of prog today try those bands
Between the buried and me
Soen
Caligula's horse
Ne obliviscaris
Subterranean masquerade
Vola
Rivers of nihil
Tesseract
Ex libris
Oceans of slumber
Vektor
Cheetos magazine
Artificial silence
Unmpfel
I checked out Cheetos magazine first from your list here cuz....obviously that name demands my attention first... anways the music video for the song A.W.K.W.A.R.D was SOOOOO Funny I will include it in future videos! Ill checkout the others too!
Sugested Travis Orbin bugs and dyed in grey new absolet
We're at 69 likes folks.
Shame but some more people came along and ruined it :/
@@ryandietzenbach233 sadge (︶︹︺)
prog was gentle giant, king crimson stuff, Rush was the most rocky band of all them. Just saying lol. And at that time, the structure was really complex, but i think the drumming not at this whole level. But at composition level, of course.
you got me when u said PT was the best band ever. agreed good sir
Yep...What do you think Inabsentia or Stupid Dream better?
@@ryandietzenbach233 ahhhh see thats a loaded question. I have my choices from both albums so I cant pick a favorite. However as much as I love everything all the way up to The Incident, I have to say im pulled more toward the earlier psychedelic stuff. their early sound was just so unmatched its incredible. (their sound in general is unmatched but those years were anazing) that Delerium Years box set they just released is pretty epic
Please please do your self a favor and watch the live version...holy crap!!!!
Prog should be the spice in the music. To some it is the main ingredience. It is PROG. Then I am off.
Not very observant for a reactionist, are you?
Im actually blind.
I recommend you focusing on drumming on these videos more than blabbering about irrelevant things. You missed some great rim work because of it for example.
Noted!
