I find it particularly interesting that every character these people create, or characters created to pander to them, are just pure narcissistic and entitled villains screaming at people that they're the hero and you're supposed to love them. This could be an interesting plot device in a competent story, but they're written completely straight and everyone is just supposed to believe they're the hero because you've been told they're the hero.

First page. Tombstone with Tony Stark's name on it. Dried out flower bouquets to show it's been some time since he died. Riri touches down in Iron Man costume. Face plate slides back to show her tear-streaked face.
Page 2-3 with Riri in the foreground kneeling by the tombstone we see pivotal scenes from Tony/Ironman's past in the background. One line of dialog. "How did you make it look so easy?"
Set the era, post Tony Stark. Sets the character as still learning but she's somehow failed and is looking for guidance. A person not a Mary Sue.

Many modern characters should take lessons from Jenny Wakeman(XJ-9): The Teenage Robot on where she succeeds in being a heroic teenager that conveys humanity and virtue, as well being adaptable and flexible in almost any genre, she’s the character where you could relate to HER struggles despite being a robot.
Someone like Riri Williams would crumble in comparison cause she’s “relatable” cause of her skin color and a superficial understanding of what a teen is supposed to act, she doesn’t convey humanity with her lack of virtue, she’s hallow.

When Y'Boi Zack (Diversity & Comics) started reviewing the Riri comics, he had an idea that Riri would make a better villain than hero. She gets her teacher to tell her that she can't do something so she'll be motivated to do it--out of spite. So her teacher says, "You can't be Tony Stark." Riri steals the equipment to build her Ironman suit when she's going to MIT. And she kinda had the personality of a sociopath rather than a hero. It felt more like she was set up to be a villain--that she had an obsession to replace Tony Stark. She wasn't called Ironheart until a bit later--since Marvel initially wanted to replace Tony Stark with Riri. Eve Ewing (who was hired mainly because she looked like Riri) rewrote Riri's origin so that seeing her friend killed actually inspired her to be a hero.

That's what kills me about Riri. It sounds like she was trying to be super meta and it flopped. You'd have to be kind of off to tell someone "Tell me I suck so I'll be motivated to not suck". That doesn't sound like a person, that sounds like an actor.

@@andrewowens4421 I've known somebody who was like that, but that was because they also knew that their minority status meant they would routinely have smoke blown up their rear--and it's kind of hard to get the motivation to improve if you know your work will be praised no matter what you do. The problem is, that would probably not have flown with Marvel's editorial department, because it's one of those well-meaning (but incredibly harmful!) moves that are done in the name of Diversity, because it's somehow believed to be encouraging & building self-esteem instead of just amazingly, tremendously damaging. People are actually incredibly good at recognizing when somebody is trying to tell them that their poo don't stink---and also consistently will really, REALLY hate that. (It's also one of the best ways to permanently destroy somebody's self-esteem because it ruins their ability to trust any sort of praise.)

That’s a very good point that made me think that this is writing that expects to be marketed. It fully assumes that Marvel’s marketing team & Twitter will carry the water & do the book’s job of introducing Riri for it. The writing’s job is to make me care about the new character. But with Twitter & “journo” coverage, the audience will already care before the book comes out… right?

And Doom is smart enough to make Iron Man on his own. Personally, I would've made Riri's character introduction a little longer, maybe starting out with her trying to fix a piece of tech, getting frustrated with it, and tossing it aside with a curse. Then, because she realizes she really doesn't want to damage machinery she's worked so hard on, she drops to her knees, picks it up, wipes it off, and babbles something like "shit! Sorry, baby, mommy didn't mean it." She carefully sets it down on her work table and considers what to do next. Not only would this set her up as being "quirky" (surely I can't be the only person who talks to inanimate objects like that), it would also establish that she is an inventor and although she is reckless, she is passionate about what she does. Then, Riri goes on to muse that if HE were here, HE would know how to fix it, and HE had faith in her, even though HE barely knew her. She keens the loss of a potential mentor, one she sorely needed when no one else really understood her passion. After all this build-up, it's revealed that HE is Tony Stark. Mike drop. Scene change. We get the sense that his absence means something to her, and so the reader views him as important even before the name drop. After we learn his identity, Riri is now the one whose status is elevated by their relationship because she is the protege of a superhero.
Anyway, that's just my take on it.

The problem with American Comic books is that they reboot the characters every 10 years or so. There's no aging, no mentoring, no retirement, or permanent death. Had Tony Stark aka Iron Man grown too old to put on the suit. Instead sees a promising candidate to sponsor and mentor. Someone that would takeover the mantle and build upon previous works. There's loads of stories to be told.

It wouldn't be so bad if not for the fact that they try to have it both ways. The world ages but they don't, and yet things change and occasionally reboot based on what the writer wants to do rather than how the story is progressing. That's one of my issues with Wolverine. The next writer wants to tell the same story, of Logan going feral and becoming a happier person in the end, to the point that a character was created for the express purpose of ruining Logan's happy relationship and resetting him into angry revenge mode.

Then one day Tony announces he’s going out on a mission, she wishes him well and he flies off. Then while he’s gone someone attacks Stark Enterprises, Riri calls Tony to come back and deal with the problem and to her shock finds the line has been disconnected. Showing us why she doesn't like it would have endeared her character. Maybe she was a cyber fly on the wall and saw things she shoundnt had. Maybe she didnt get the full story of something and it colored her visual on the organization. Hell maybe just doesnt like 1 organization with so much reach. Since she was brought in right before hydra cap there could be vindication. Years before she would be maybe 13 when 50 state initiative then secret invasion and dark reign happened. All happened due to major shield involvement trying to wrangle in a superhero community that A. largely didnt need it and b. When it was being handled it was handled in the most terrible way. There are building blocks here for something great. Maybe she doesn't like wakandas culture or history of isolationism. Maybe she grew up around a wakandan spy and something bad happened. •Ditch the name Ms.Marvel and give her OWN name with her OWN identity related to her.
•Not letting her Muslim Identity and Hobby be her only defining character traits.
•Giving her a heroic virtue, or a hint of one.

As for America Chavez, she needs to be scraped, her entire creation is so incredibly superficial not just because of her race and ethnicity, but her powers and place in the universe, she sounds like the most scrapped idea ever. @@LegacyComics100 no I think kamala khan should have been pushed deeper into her own story. In one moment she is a human the next she is an inhuman. She fights hand in hand with a literal God. Shouldn't that affect her beliefs. Shouldn't waking up one day and finding out you have a king and a queen and a connection to space aliens change her daily lives. Inhumans didn't have discrimination before the terrigin mists were unloaded on earth. They tried to do give them discrimination but it's hard to take it seriously when you have thousands of humans in the marvel landscape lining up in camps to recieve powers. So ditch that angle. Delve into the fact that she is now a part of a race with higher then she could ever have technology at her fingertips. From training to learning about what she is apart of could have expanded the inhuman brand a great deal. Could have explained or expanded on what plan blackbolt did when he unleashed the mist on earth. Then you have the fan girl angle to her character. The writers shafted her bad on this. She was made right before deku and she could have had that be her fan girling taken to the proper extremes but they lost it. Hell the ms marvel part even has connections to the kree Carol and a connection to the inhumans. Kamala should be the glue to it all. There are paths here and they are being ignored to keep her a street level hero. It's sad because Sam Alexander was done very well. All his connection is is that he's a nova. Dream on what it could be if we had someone who wasn't so tepid with her character wrote her. Plus her powers don't need changing she just needs to think of clever powerstunts. Second, Rhodey (AKA War Machine) is her uncle, and helps her get her foot in the door to get her hands on some Stark tech (With some supervision, of course. No one would freely give out Stark Industries technology without someone keeping an eye on the person using it.) I don’t recall any specifics beyond that, however.

Also, if you want your broken sentence, I would actually suggest
    "Tony Stark... Iron Man... is...!"
Partly because it says something like what LD proposed, but
    1) It leaves the possibility that something happened to Iron Man but Riri knows more about it than anyone else, or suggests that something happened to Iron Man more than just a simple disappearance
    2) It sort of plays on the now iconic "I am Iron Man" sentence because from Riri's perspective, that sentence is "Tony Stark is Iron Man."
Sure, it says less, but I'd rather gamble the less is more for this one.

She could have a really cool backstory in the MCU as well: a prodigy of Claw. She could have some real hatred for wakonda and gotten rich/gained the attention of tony stark by doing business with and inventing for claw and his weapons contracts. She could look up to and immensely respect Tony for his work as an arms dealer and after his transformation to iron man, she could look up to him for helping others, but still distastefully continue to make/distribute weapons with claw. Tony could recommend she get out of the business while she can, she makes an enemy of claw and becomes an American educated genius mentored by iron man, meets T'challa and shows an ingrained hatred of wakondans and their king. That same hatred could be used in the black panther movies as a huge building tension for them as characters, hold up a mirror to wakonda and the USA and Tony stark to see this character grow. It would be cool too to see her team up with Peter Parker and they have a moment to reflect on the man who changed their lives and was a mentor to them. So much potential, so much squandered.
Initially I wouldn't like her character as she would follow the Mary Sue supplanting male characters as the M-She-U has the established pattern. But as she develops and shows a real person behind the armor, I could really identify with that.

We all know why these "writers" will always opt to Tell rather than Show and it's because the audience they're trying to pander to doesn't understand nuance and can't formulate their own thoughts based upon inferred information or subtle visual clues. This is one of the reasons why they obsess over fantasy heroes looking, sounding, and acting exactly like they do; they can't understand anything that they haven't specifically experienced. It's so bad that they can't even understand how a similar situation could apply to them unless that situation is quite literally precisely tailored to their exact situation and viewpoint.
So these characters insist on telling everyone exactly what they're doing, how they're feeling, and why they're amazing because the audience being pandered to is incapable of understanding it unless it's expressly spelled out for them.

Oh, and she didn’t take the spotlight away from the title character. I would've liked her a lot more (both in Wakanda Forever & in the comics) if she was sociopathic and an outcast/shut-in, to contrast her genius. And due to this she'd be an anti-hero, the name "Ironheart" giving more "cruelly unhinged" instead of "hopeful & inspiring" vibes.
How about rather than constantly going to detention bc she's bored, she constantly tries to hurt other people or commit arson bc she's bored? The principle saying that to her parents would've come off as much creepier, thus pulling the reader in.
Maybe she uses her suit to carry out deeds from various villains who'll pay her, or maybe she goes after people who bigger superheroes don't pay attention to bc they don't care about the smaller neighbourhoods. Maybe she's in a predicament where she makes parts for underworld criminals (either bc one of her parents are dying & she needs the money or the criminal threatened to kill said parent as blackmail), until she decides to murder whoever she worked for, causing everyone who worked under him to now hunt her down. She needs to be different enough from Tony; I think a version of him who's not so well-off with looser morals would be interesting.
As a black girl, I love morally grey anti-heroes with internal conflict, and the fact that most of them aren't minorities is a bummer. We have enough wholesome black girls, give us something dark.
Edit: I also realised it would be way more interesting if the whole story took place somewhere in Africa, so the poverty, high crime rates & feeling distant from the concept of superheroes would hit harder. Parts of Stark's armor could've fallen or been left behind in the fields after a battle, and Riri could've found & reverse-engineered them from there.

She sounds like a quirky teenager and nothing more. Which would be fine for many genres, but for a superhero? A replacement for a tech hero? A quirky teenage tech inventor would have been better.
And while I'm at it, we have seen so many examples in comics how to do this better. The 'Death of Superman' was followed by 'A world without Superman', showing us the need for Superman and building up the reasons why the people are ready to accept a replacement Superman. In this case? Why not let the replacement see how other heroes struggle to keep up with some of Iron Man's traditional heroes, maybe even fail while she struggles with the decision to take up the mantle, creating/improving her own armor ending the issue with her in the armor. Next issue could see her struggle with being a superhero, the stress of supercombat and asking a seasoned hero for advice. A third issue could have her getting more methodical, using a database to know her opponent, her on-board AI keeping an eye on innocent bystanders and so on. Meanwhile she has some struggles in her family and personal life, something a more seasoned hero can give her some advice on as well? She still has to solve the problems herself. But wasn't that a part for the reason for the Avengers (and the JLA)? Taking on problems too big for any single hero?
True, this is a traditional way to tell the story, but it usually works.
Besides, does anyone remember what Tony did during 'Heroes' Return'? He didn't fight to get his company back. That would have been a waste of his time. He simply founded a new one. Riri is suppose to be smarter than Tony Stark and can't come up with some inventions to market so she is at least financially independent? Can build her own workshop at a more secure location than her family's home (not reading the comic that was what I got)?
Does anyone remember that one panel where they explained how smart Mr. Fantastic and Doctor Doom are? How the University Professors had trouble following their discussions and that when the University's computers weren't good enough for them, they build their own? I have noticed that many writers these days struggle with the problem of depicting super-genius level characters. But we have examples from the past how it can be done.

I think the main problem with Riri's introduction is Bendis completely half-assing it. He doesn't make even the flimsiest attempt to pull in Ironman fans or get them interested in Riri he just want to get to the racebent mantle-swap as soon as possible, with the only draw being that Tony Stark has now been replaced with Young Black Female Supergenius.

Ok a quirky main character, Instead of the lol-so-random run of the mill "quirky" character let's create an original one. How about Riri never talks, every conversation her side of the conversation is always in thinking bubbles. No one in the story continues the conversations the way she is thinking they are, and you treat every other character as if they're talking to a brick wall and they get annoyed at it. Except when she starts working for Tony at an internship, in which case he fills in her thought bubbles and talks as if he's thinking the same way as she is. You build a relationship with a character, give her a goal and reason to give a shit when Tony disappears, and you have inherit conflict in the fact that she never has conversations with 99% of the cast.
Plus since you gave her a massive negative character-wise readers will be far more forgiving if she's such a damn prodigy mechanic/programmer she can slam out Iron Man suits like they're candy.

Which is a godawful way to write, like _writin' the dang ol' accent_ on a character who has that accent. It's fucking grating and gets old really fast, especially when it's the main character.
Just... Write normal fucking dialogue... People will figure out how quirky and "teenager" is the character without the pointless repetition or the awkward phrasing because most readers aren't absolutely braindead (no guarantee they will remain that way after reading something like this) and comic books are not film or television. There is no "line delivery". There is no "acting". There is only text and drawings, and if you don't make each as clear as possible, then the comic book fails on a fundamental level. You cannot be literal in dialogue, _because there is no one speaking!_ It's a balloon with text, and you're not a court typist trying to transcribe all the "uhm"s and "ehh"s and pauses and sighs found in human speech! Write clearly dammit!!

As far as most people know, it's Storm, Misty Knight, the female supporting cast of Black Panther, and that's it. SO Bendis made up Riri Williams to appeal to his kids, which is pretty sweet and I can't get mad at that. However, the execution was flawed. Had Bendis introduced Williams earlier, and had her hang out with Stark for long enough to establish a bond, strong enough for her to take up his armor, that would have made more sense.

Parker should have been Iron Man's successor instead of someone like Riri. Riri Williams is just a cheap knockoff and poorly written Marry Sue who should never exist and should never have given the torch in the first place because she never earned it, and it was cheap lazy writing for someone who showed up out of nowhere and claimed to be the next Iron Man when someone else has a much better shot to be his successor in the MCU, especially in the comics when you can have anyone who is the closest to Tony Stark should have been his successor instead of someone like Riri Williams.
