That was a sad part. He is still recovering and clearly is not running at 100%. I don’t recall him ever interrupting this much. He described elsewhere how hard it is for him right now to “get back”. To see him this vulnerable is painful, but also inspiring. Despite all of his difficulties, he strives to lift up others. What a man!

I do not want to disprove or argue with you eventhough it might be considered as such but I believe the following insight might be in your self interest.
So that's why I choose to react on your otherwise innocent post.
Since you hardly know the man:
I think you actually would love a man that sees the mental aspect of your being, who is (verbally) powerful and capable while still being able to constrain his power in the face of threat and benevolence, he also seems to be a loving, caring and emotionally connected person.
But I would love those aspects in any person.
So what I am trying to say is, don't misrepresent the aspects of identity with identity itself.
I.e.
I might love names that start with an H but that is not the same as loving someone because it starts with an H.

The reaction is proper, but it was proper enough to make me feel like I should communicate the thing I said the way I said them. I am black n I don’t feel/see/sense that life is harder for me than for anyone else. It’s kind of obvious like we all have the same shadow work to do, everyone falls somewhere on the spectrum of doing their best (or their worst) towards others. It’s deeper than that but I’m not gonna explain it all. It’s deep but also a “no shit” once you see that humans experiences suffering differently so to compare suffering is also odd. What worse lose an arm or leg? Everyone has a different answer. Life is made up of nuance and to say that someone’s life is harder than someone else is a hard call to make especially since it’s different experiences in life as well as different desires in life.

Yep. Exactly. It is when we try to promote our particular thing to the top of a hierarchy of struggles that we lose the reality that all suffer, some more visibly than others. Skin is just skin. Everyone is a minority somewhere in the world. It’s who we choose to be where we are that matters.
There’s a saying among the rich maybe even powerful in China: No one has it easy. Anyone thinks the Kennedys have it easier? I’m a first generation colored immigrant and crushed by own biracial kids: but I made my own choice and shall live with it.
As a woman, I've been harassed, bullied and treated very poorly by certain people because of it (e.g. sexist teachers and managers). I never let it get me down because I know that life isn't easy but it is what you make of it. I'm happy to report that despite the challenges I've had in my life I'm fulfilled and happy...and I feel better off because of the challenges that I've faced. It all goes into the basket of experience.

The last part of this interview hit me like a brick. You said that you are ashamed and unworthy of .... I wish I could jump in say that you don't have to be perfect. The world doesn't need a perfect person. The world needs you with all of your imperfections.
May be that's a rule that's missing in both the books, and we add to list. I wish you the best of all possible goods and I really wish you could see this comment. Just Because you wrote two books on life and at the moment your life is throwing challenges on you and it is not like a castle that it should be doesn't make you unworthy by any stretch of the imagination.

His sincerity and capacity to synthesize the true makes him think he is controversial.....but in my mind he is controversial only to the unworthy. I'm an older person and still I'm like eating every word he is speaking! His genius will last for generations from now.
Jordan’s sincerity is staggering to me. I am afraid that his bottomless empathy for humanity has the side effect of opening him up to absorb the negative emotional affect as well. I imagine it is psychologically exhausting.

He's mentioned before that exceptional confrontations with journalists have left him 'rattled' for a few days. I don't know about you, but I feel that self-doubt is a stronger foundation of character than brute force of arrogance, or of confidence. Vulnerable introspection is what attracts me to points of view that I haven't yet considered. Humility is in short supply in an era full of internet echo chambers.
This is not so. One who realizes truth cannot absorb that which one has overcome. I liken it to seeing your parents stuffing you're stocking on Christmas Eve. Once you have seen reality, can you go back to believing a falsehood? Empathy can be a positive quality, but empaths are indeed susceptible untill they protect themselves with knowledge.

I think it's crucial that we “do care” about the people that don't like or don't understand the message Jordan Peterson is bringing. It is only through the unification of of order and chaos that we can achieve transcendency. It is the job of the majority center to bring in the polarizing ideologically driven fringe. This has been very difficult because of the relative great silence of the majority center. Much of this is due to technology driven, hyperpolarization of all sorts of media. Information tools have been exploited by by market systems, ideologues, political parties, nation states, and individuals for narrow self-serving goals at the expense of truth. Jordan Peterson is that rare individual that brings his extraordinary breadth of information, analysis and wisdom to put the human psyche under a microscope so that we may see and understand interconnectedness that drives us forwards as individuals and a collective consciousness.

I think this is one of my favorite interviews with Jordan Peterson ever. Tom does such a wonderful job of ebb and flow and getting Dr. Peterson to talk about a whole host of ideas,. Awesome! Thanks
There are people who have had a foot deliberately placed on their necks politically and economically among other things. That is undeniably an unfair disadvantage to those. I, a 37 yr old black man in America, understands completely that having a poverty mindset is 100% optional(although I grew up in poverty/the ghetto). 80% of the people I grew up with don’t understand that perspective due to what has been ingrained in their minds by their parents, who did have a slight “foot on their neck” and our grandparents who practically did directly. I see the limiting mindset in my parents and there is little that I can do to show them that there is a bigger perspective of things we can accomplish as human beings.
Most people I grew up with aren’t even open to the thought but one thing for sure... Their kids will have better options and will be less likely to live with limiting beliefs as our communities improve. My children are at an advantage(compared to me) bcz I took the time to study business, psychology, neurology and true history in which I instilled in their subconscious and conscious mind. Overall human consciousness is improving... Can’t deny that and I’m glad for that.
We are all the product of our thoughts and beliefs... many of those handed down at an early age though.

Those that love Dr. Peterson grasp his way of being. He's a college professor who has the world as his classroom. When he speaks, no matter if it's a journalist or an interview in a 'safe space to be' he is open, honest and vulnerable. This is the ultimate value of him. He has a lot of knowledge, yes. But a lot of people have that same knowledge. It is in his self-awareness, his humility and his vulnerability that we know it's not a bunch crap. It's delivered to engage the mind to look within your own life and see expansion. Those that don't like him, don't like that he doesn't say what they believe someone of his caliber should be saying. The wretched interview with the female journalist that consistent turned his words around. "So what you're saying is..." She wanted to destroy the knowledge that he shares because it doesn't fit her ideology. It should be okay that two people's ideologies aren't the same. How boring life would be if we were all the same!
I really appreciated this interview a lot. He is accurate that there are things in this world that suck. They happen to us. Do you sit and wallow in it? That does not serve your life.
I don't want a perfect person teaching me... I can't live up to that ridiculous notion that a perfect person exists. Nobody can. I do like his humility. The Hitler analogy is so true. That just reminded me of "to whom much is given, much is required." How much better would our governments be if our world leaders held the responsibility placed on them as something to not take for granted so easily? How much better would every aspect of our nation be when we realize that anyone we have influence over - it is a responsibility.

I’m not sure vulnerability is the right word. It’s not what creates the powerful force. Being vulnerable isn’t necessarily praiseworthy or trustworthy. Small dogs are vulnerable, but that doesn’t make them powerful or trustworthy or praiseworthy.
@@Originalman144 It's not the fact of vulnerability, but the attitude. A small dog is "vulnerable" as a human being is, but a human being can choose to reveal their vulnerability or not.
Choosing to reveal it opens you up to the potential for very specific attacks on your ego and severe emotional trauma; but it also disarms others and creates the potential to have a profound healing influence on those who encounter it.
The risk is immense, so it requires a lot of courage, but the payoff can be just as powerful and then some.

I see your point but I would call that Peterson’s humility not vulnerability - real humility is seen as authentic when it is based on deep scars or wisdom or lived experiences. The same for the small dog, but its’ humility in emotional interaction is based off of instinct and the desire for food/survival/safety/affection.

I think there’s been an over use of encouraging “vulnerability” in recent years. No one is respected just because they are vulnerable- oftentimes being vulnerable is a weakness and lack of strength in many ancient communities and a shunning characteristic for sexual reproduction. Not to be confused with kindness or respectfulness.

An identity can't be just "you" because you affect the "world" and the world Reacts back at you as well, then in turn "you" of tomorrow looks at how the "you" of yesterday acted then, how the "world" Reacted, and then finally "you" have to decide what to do from that information next.
Best interview I’ve watched in a while. He’s vulnerability towards the end got me emotional. And so well handled Tom. You gave back to him as well with your kind words. Even the best of us struggle - life’s a tough place. God help us all.
He always has to be so guarded in interviews because you never know when an unexpected attack is coming. You could tell by his body language with Tom that he came to really trust him in their time talking. Tom was open, curious, and his admiration for Dr.Peterson allowed Jordan to return with that earnest vulnerability that touched you and me
both. I mean I've watched a lot of videos of Dr.Peterson. I love this man and I'm very familiar with his content... I have NEVER seen him make such a blunt statement about how he was feeling and viewed himself. I feel like I can relate to him that much more... he's incredible.

As much as it hurts to see Mr. Peterson say he feels broken and unworthy of the attention, I have to say that he keeps looking more vibrant and strong with each new interview. And I'm so grateful for that. I also feel it makes him feel even more inspirational to me. I just have a hard time taking guidance from people who haven't suffered or lived much (ie young self help gurus). I know we can learn something from everybody, but there is simply more to be learned from experience and those who have had experiences give us the opportunity for a life shortcut. Jordan's recent problems with drug addiction were, sadly, predictable. You cannot listen any of his daughter's videos to not see that she, and Jordan's wife, have NO understanding of what the hell Jordan is talking about.

Though the way I see it is that it's in the present tense is because the past tense would imply that one becomes aware of the fact after they were done with it, i.e. Life. But the thing with us is we can premeditate on our mortality. Even if we often try to escape the bitter truth, we still know that it's gonna end one day. Yet we still live it. This reminds me of the stoic "memento mori", meaning remember your death / remember that you will die. And this is not a reason for us to be afraid of it, not something that should make us constantly look over our shoulder and live inside a bubble to avoid death, because it's inevitable. It should instead be a reminder to live fully as long as we still can.
