- This is not our traditional retro restoration video, however, I felt this information needed to be share. In this video, we disassemble the Wii U disc drive, how to swap the daughterboard which is paired to the main Wii U motherboard to a brand new drive.

Duuuude ! You just saved my wiiU !! Thanks a LOT. I've bought a replacement drive on aliexpress, thinking it would work right out of the box. Without your video I probably would have given up. It's really hard to find good quality repair tuto on the wiiU...
Thank you for the video, I was suck because of the 3 smalls screws...
I'm glad to have started with the old drive, since I've messed up wit the 3 screws of the top plate.
Anyway thanks and I'm in for swapping ...
WORKED! 1st try.
I followed another video that directed me to remove those three screws that you directed not do touch, and I followed the steps also included in this video to swap the daughterboard onto the new drive, and I got a red flashing light when I tried turning it on. With the old drive, the system was running fine, all but working with games.
If your getting a flashing red light, try cleaning the ribbon cables that connect to the daughterboard and check that all ribbon cables are connected properly. Hope this help.
Where i can Buy the disc drive?
I see someones in AliExpress, do those work? Or it's better somewhere else?
I bought a new (refurbished) drive, changed the board and now it says invalid disc for all my disks. So it’s worse than before where the disc may read but then go off. What can I do? I’m frustrated.
whats the ports that connects the device to the wii u called
Hey so I the three small screws you first unscrew are REALLY tight and hard to unscrew and I’m scared I’ll strip them. Any tips?
I would suggest applying a small amount of WD-40 on the screws and wait about 5 mins.
My optical drive board is different then what you have. My circuit board is angled and not square like in this video. It’s a Wii U USA model.
You could actually remarry the drive in theory by writing to the SEEPROM.
That connector should be just SATA over a ribbon, people are working on putting an SSD there instead of the disc drive.
Hmm..
I wonder what exactly is checked.
If I followed this guide and replaced the disc drive, do you think the error code 160-1400 would stop showing up. I've had my wii for over 10 years and it's worked perfectly fine until I tried to start it up a few months ago. So should I go through with this and replace it or buy a new one?
Update: I've ordered a new disc drive (I opened up my console and found the disc drive to get the right type) and it should be arriving tomorrow
I'll update what happens when I get it set up
Sorry for long waited reply, unfortunately it's been a busy couple of weeks, regarding your Wii U a disc drive replacement may work, however, if this does not fix the issue, then please check out this post on GBA-temp which covers the same error code you are having: gbatemp.net/threads/absolute-fix-to-160-1400-error.572879/
Hope this helps.
@@theretropal thank you, I'm currently changing it out but I'm waiting on a very small screwdriver to come in so I can take out a nail and I'm going to comment if it worked
Did it work?
@@sivartwad I'm currently at a stand still trying to get ahold of a good screwdriver for an extremely tiny screw on the inside of the og disc drive
Once i get that I'm going to change it all out and I'll update this when I do finish
My WiiU decided to kick the bucket. Put in a new disc drive and now it has the same error message. Give me a F in the chat

@GalaxyStandard77 bro same, I'm so sad about that my Wii U got Fu-#$ 😢 looks like I'll have to put it up...
My drive stopped reading some Wii U games a couple years ago so I opened it and cleaned the lens and nothing happened so I am here
