- Our Wii U started making a loud grinding noise and then stopped reading discs. The console still worked but could not play anything from the disc drive. Took it all apart and fixed it for free! Easy to do at home.

Thank you so much for the detailed of how to take it apart. My 2 year old stuck a disc with stickers and googly eyes on it, causing the eject button to not work.
Other than completely stripping those 2 triscrews on the front and having to drill them out... works like a charm!

@@johnmarcusengreso8273if only I read this advice few days ago... my 2 year old stuffed something inside the disc drive now it wont let me insert any discs its jammed. Will try to do this step by step hopefully I can revive my system now...dammit
This video helped me a lot. I got a used Wii U from someone with rough kids. I bought the lost cords and controllers on Ebay. It worked well when I got it. I had it in my home, playing it in the living room. I decided to move it to a different room with Mario Kart 8 still inside the console. I hooked it up in the bedroom and Mario wouldn't Eject. Nothing worked, so i pulled the disc out with tweezers. I couldn't insert discs anymore. I couldn't even force one in. I used this video to take apart my Wii U step-by-step. There was a tiny, fat twig inside, probably from kids. The disc drive was repaired. Upon taking off the front face piece with the eject and power buttons, the first ribbon wire immediately detached from the face, not the console. I was having a hard time re-inserting it. It worked momentarily, then the ribbon fell back out. Everything worked with the disc drive, but the eject and power were flickering, you could say. I was having a hard time. I used tweezers to carefully re-insert the ribbon and firmly, but gently, wedge it into place. It was a nightmare, but it worked. I put the outer shell of the console back together. Two screws from the inside were overlooked during re-assembly. Still works. I'm gonna keep the screws in a box and keep playing wii u without them. Thumbs up on the video. It helped a lot.
Thank you so much for this video! My Wii U didn’t read any of my disks (wii u or wii) and apparently there was a penny in the console! Haha so now it’s all put back together and I can play super smash brothers :)

Thanks for this video. I had an invalid disk error for a while; mine was a different cause (spec of crud on the laser) but the disassembly of the drive etc was very helpful! Got some happy boys now!

When your cd is not recognized, first, check you're not a dumb ass like me and you tried to start a Wii U cd from the Wii menu

AMAZING TROUBLESHOOTING! This was so great, i tried getting in to replace the laser, but I couldn't figure out how to get the old laser out. When I put it back together it made this noise. I'll see If I can fix it now. Have you ever replaced it's laser?
So, back around 2014-15, my brothers tried to clean the game disc (they were 5 - 7 years old) and they used kool-aid to clean it?? (Idk why) and the disc drive never worked since. I've tried clean it by blowing it/using a can of air (is that what you call it?) And nothing worked. I'm scared of opening it up and breaking it. Do I need to clean the lens or replace the whole drive? (If I ever open it...)
I know this video is old as hell, but any advice on fixing a disc reader that broke because two disc were put in the console? My little sisters have made it impossible to play any games that I have because I only have disc games.
For mine, the "yolk arm bearing type thing" at 7:20 doesn't go down when I put the disk in, is there a way to fic that?
I have a Wii U and I'm getting a 160-1400 error, take everything apart trying to fix it and i'm still getting the error, although it has gone from being immediate to at least starting to load the OS and into the menu screen then poof error again. it has been literally 100 times and the only way out is to pull the plug.

Hello as I was taking apart my Wii U my blue ribbon cable that was connecting the power button and the console broke and I was wondering if there is a way to fix it I am super sad because I was trying to fix this console for my mom but I ended up making it worse so if there’s anyway I can get in contact with you to help get this fix it would be wonderful. 2:25 what if the cable is broken? I tried to fix my Wii U when I was 11 and I accidentally broke it. Can I buy a new one and attach it? Or would that not work?
Great video! Followed the instuctions and found that my son had pushed a credit card and a toy into the disk drive. Worked fine after I removed them.

Also for any of you wondering I just called Nintendo and they discounted the Wii U for hardware repairs. Obviously this was a hardware error and they know they messed up. It’s sad they can’t take the responsibility and refund people. Seriously I’ve seen small companies do better than this but what do you expect when you run into a hotel on a monopoly board.

Great job! I disassembled my sons and cleaned and checked everything. It still wont play though. I didnt see that piece that you adjusted last though.. looks like I'll be opening the wiiu up again and trying it your way this time! Thanks for posting this online, good info!

Mine had a small plastic inside but when I insert the disc it does not engage meaning that the motor does not go lower to make to spin the disc, any idea? Thanks

My Wii U makes spinning sounds when I have disc inside...Playing black ops 2, on menu no sound by when I am in a game, full of spinning sound of the disc. Is this normal?

Is it safe to have the Wii U internals exposed while you have the power cable plugged in? I get really scared of some sort of electrocution stuff or frying something in the console.

did you figure it out mine dose the same thing only with smash bros and Bayonetta it will let me play for a min then it will say error and thats when it says its invalid

The Wii U it's very strange... This video helped me a lot while I was opening it, I've cleaned the lens with isopropyl alcool, removed the dust inside and outside the drive and it keeps throwing the same error (your disc is probably dirty, try cleaning it).

All of my games work but botw, smash and lego city won't. To be fair botw works just sometimes, depending on the position you insert the disc.

Can this really work on scratched Wii U Disces?
Mine now won’t play Wii discs. Wii U discs are fine. Seems the Wii discs makes a little grinding sound. Gotta see if I can do the same. Blah.
It's too hard. Nintendo over tightened the screws that hold the front of the plate for the disk drive. There is no way to remove them
can someone please help me? My wii u wont accept the disc at all, it goes in a little bit and then it gets stuck and then it spits it back out

My Wii U just started having an error 150-1031. It looks like it read the game, but when I go to play it, the error pops up. My other games work, its just happening to Monster Hunter 3U and DuckTales. Both discs are in pretty mint condition. Could it possibly be the disc drive? Or maybe the laser?
The laser. Probably just best to replace the disc drive altogether they're not too expensive

The top of mine doesn’t want to come off and I unscrewed everything on the top and side
if you're just trying to fix your disc ( I haven't put it in my wii u yet ), but this video works; ua-cam.com/video/ccZTcqYOADA/v-deo.html I realized halfway through the video that it was for xbox's /ps's & pc's, but my discs doesn't have any scratches anymore, so I'd say that video will help rather than going to the extreme extent. lol.

Elizabeth Diddle there’s probably something stuck in it. My Wii U didn’t make too much noise (not as loud as the video) but my disks were not being read and the Wii U kept saying invalid.

I am literally fletching hearing it grind the disc 😰 the reason I look at this video was because my Wii U randomly was unable to read my captain toad, treasure tracker disc even know it’s been able to read it before and the disc isn’t even dirty or scratched, and it wasn’t able to read it
My wii u reads my wii discs but not my wii u discs. (I bought a super mario maker disc off of ebay its coming today ill update if it worked) I have 2 nintendo land discs (one i bought recently from gamestop) they both didnt work it might be a coincedence and i have a super mario maker disc (I was scratched alot so it wouldnt have worked either way) If these dont work then i might need to buy another disc drive or lens
