- I made a stone handle for my dagger we are calling Serenity! This is one of the most exciting and nerve-wracking things I have done. I am afraid the handle could break at any second while I tile saw it. Figuring out how to get it polished was tricky, but the end result is priceless!

Geologist specialising in alkaline rocks (like charoite) here. The black is aegirine, the honey coloured mineral is tinaksite. A lot of these are more sensitive to acid than typical stones, so some type of sealant might be helpful if it doesnt ruin the polish, if the piece is expected to be handled a lot
he can use a impregnation for stones. advice from a stone worker ;)
Looks incredible!
they’re minerals marie
@GAMMA82 you mean 'an' impregnation for stones...... from an English PhD holder 😄
@meddylad glad someone said it.
Great job! As a stone worker, I will say you did AWESOME on your 1st go! Charoite is fairly easy to work on but it can go sideways sometimes right about when you’re almost finished! But you ‘handled’ it VERY well and the results look Fantastic!! Way to go! Agate is a little harder but there are some truly wonderful patterns and colors. And jade, well you are gonna Love working with jade! 💎
Well done! I'm a rock hounder as well. You have probably just joined the dark-side (a simple play on rock dust. Make sure you use a mask that dust can be nasty on your lungs. The finer the grit the hotter the surface can get. Rock is not forgiving, Welcome to the madness.
Stoned worker? They should fire you bro
@@j-fb4596 why? i now nothing about rocks but whats wrong with his statement?
@@kaidenlangford2375 I think it's a joke. "Stoned" is a word used to describe people high drugs.
@@Thomas.Wright I do my best work high !!
I Love the way he’s always surprised when it’s perfect. No one else is surprised. He’s so darn humble lol.
I have to admit I thoroughly admire your artistry. You are without question a true Grand Master Smith. God bless you and all yours Sir.
Just by the thumbnail alone I can tell that's going to be epic.
Violet Stone Burl. Beautiful!
"Etch a sketching" is a perfect description of that technique you were using on the lathe, lol. I love it !
Using water on a stone/tile bit is not only for lubrication, it's also for cooling. Creating the pool might work but the water will warm up and your bit won't stay sharp very long. Best to have a setup or at a minimum a semi continuous spray/flow of cool water.
This dagger is worthy of royalty 👑
The grain pattern of the stone is simply mesmerising. Looks like a nebula full of glowing gas.
Love watching you create these magical pieces. Amazing that your entire family is dedicated to sharing the craft. Thanks for allowing us a view into your world.
That handle pops. Great work Kyle. Shout out to Josh. Without your camera skills and lighting, we wouldn't have been able to see the color blasting from the stone.
Go Team Royer!
I look forward to seeing you carve flowers and swirls into the next stone handle
One of the marks of a master is being able to visualise things beyond your current skillset. Executing them is impressive after several failures but to nail it the first time round. Hats off to you sir.
That Charoite is stunning, and the dendrite inclusions really give some character to it. When you start using stone for handle then you really get my interest going because I am a serious rock hound and can think of a thousand different stones that would be awesome as handle material you might also want to try giving Porcelain a try as well, but for that you'll have to learn pottery or have someone who IS a potter making your handles for you because pottery take a long time to master.
that handle is absolutely majestic brother, well done
Dude that handle is unbelievably gorgeous!
God tier craftsmanship
Shaping and forming stones and gems is so much fun. Very addictive.
Your Craftsmanship is just on a unbelievable level
please be careful while using files near the spinning lathe chuck. it can go ver bad very quick. just make sure you have a tight grip and keep in mind where BOTH ends of the files are in relation to the danger! 4:22 great work!
Kyle,
I have a question. I know you predominantly do blades of all styles shapes and sizes. In this respect you are a Grand Master Smith (in my humble opinion you are unmatched).
Have you ever considered creating a suit of armor? It would be incredible to watch you build your own fully functional battle armor. Something epic in nature. I just wanted to plant this seed because I can only imagine it would provide for a few hundred amazing videos through to completion. What a spectacular documentary it would be.
Again, God bless you Sir.
True craftsman, dreaming of making new things with new techniques, absolutely a pleasure to watch!
This pairs so beautifully with the blade, what a fantastic stone handle. Bravo Kyle
I can't stop looking at the polished handle. It looks SO GOOD 😍😍😍
JAW JUST HIT THE FLOOR!!! 🤘🤘
Wow... I mean, wow, wow, wow... The blade has reached the point where I'm speechless, and you're making it better... 🤯
Wow, that’s sick! Gorgeous colors and shape.
This dagger is becoming legend amigo.
Josh, IMHO you're doing great work on the videography!
There is so much depth to that stone. It is almost opalescent. Very beautiful.
"may the forge be with you" - good one :D incredible work
That is a stunning handle you crafted! can't wait for the next episode (still watching this one, but had to see the end result because I couldn't wait)
Absolutely gorgeous! SQUARE ⬛️
I can only imagine how comfortable holding the knife in my hand
It's looking amazing Kyle. I love how you keep trying new things and still make it look like you've been doing it for years.
I like the moat idea. Slow and light fingertip pressure with water. I've put a piece of marble in a shallow pan and used a hole saw for tile. Perfect for the faucet set. The bugger in this is this is a very well made 20 minute video and you made it look easy. Time and patience are the biggest ingredient once the materials and tools are obtained. Much of which you can construct yourself if you collect electric motors to mount on a bench to make a buffer or grinder. Beautiful job.
This was absolutely stunning. 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
The look of that stone is unreal, what an awesome material
That handle is just superb. Very well done sir.
Ohhh that handle is a beauty!!
Your craftsmanship never ceases to amaze me.
If I only had the funds to commission you. 😒😔
Absolutely stunning again!
Couple of comments from a faceting instructor: Yeah, I teach people how to make gemstones.
To prevent grit cross-contamination, always wash your hands and the material you are working on when you step up from a lower-numbered grit to a higher one. Liquid dish-washing soap works fine. If you are using disposable toweling to wipe things away while you are working the stone, throw those away when you step up to the next grit and start with fresh toweling.
600 grit to 14,000 grit is a large step; you might consider using a 2,400 or a 3,000 grit in between them. It's a lot easier to remove 600 grit scratches with 2,400 grit than it is with 14,000
For safety's sake, always wash your hands when you're done; that 14,000 grit might seem like it's gone, but you don't want it anywhere in or on your body. I've gotten into the habit of washing my hands both before and after I use the toilet.
Polishing at 14,000 with your leather belt, you should be wearing protection so that you don't breathe any of it, or get it in your eyes. Actually, this is true for every grit you use.
Your leather belt is overkill for polishing (it has way too much surface area, so you're wasting grit and the extender). Use a leather disk instead, something about 6 or 8 inches. You can mount a padded leather disk on an angle grinder and hold it a vise. There may be a polishing or buffing disk that fits the Covington. Suede will hold the polish and the extender well. When we get up to 50,000 grit, we use a polymer wheel instead of leather.
If you are going to stick with using leather belts, use indelible ink and write the grit number on the inside of each belt - might be a good idea to write the date that you first put it to use as well. Writing the grit number on the belt will help you avoid cross-contamination.
Polishing wheels and belts get dusty when they sit - even if they are stored well. rinse the wheels and belts each time before you use them, and make sure the surface doesn't feel contaminated or lumpy.
As for the "extender", we use baby oil, straight from the local drugstore.
I've seen people get amazing results with automotive buffing compounds (but those results might vary, depending on the material they were used on).
I'd be wary of using stone for a handle. I'd be afraid of mechanical impact causing chips and fractures. Is it possible that you could implement some sort of a hard rubber shock absorber into the design? Of course, if the knife never gets vigorous use, that won't be an issue.
Working on a practice piece, so that you could learn what works and what doesn't was a smart move. Not all polishes work on all materials.
His mastery of all processes to create the final result is something to see!
That stone came out beautiful! Great work Kyle!
Wow. I follow many talented knife makers/artists on UA-cam, and yours are by far the most refined and beautiful I've seen. I'm impressed
Absolutely love seeing your excitement and enthusiasm on trying something new. Also the larger bevels on the handle look really really good. Beautiful work as always.
awesome job, as always
This quote popped into my head while watching this - "Pivot! Pivot! Pivot!".
Honestly cannot wait to see the rest of this & see it completed! I've really enjoyed this one, not that I dont enjoy the others you've done. I think it's just because I can feel you excitement and happiness of doing the stone handle, which looks beautiful too btw Kyle. You're so amazing n your attention to detail is way beyond others I've watched
A true Grand Master Smith
Incredible build! I love how infectious your excitement is!
Love it. Following this all the way. Can't wait to see the finished dagger.
Absolutely beautiful work Kyle.
Amazing job on this dagger so far. Love the color of that stone, very regal looking. Can't wait to see the finished product.
That drill core gives me fountain pen ideas ❤
Josh is an unsung hero of this channel. He does as much passion producing these videos as Kyle does making knives. Good job Josh.
Copy that. Josh is crushing it. Flame on.
Dad
Lately I've gotten hooked on videos of things like knife/sword making, woodworking, metal working, glass blowing, etc. And as much as I love seeing absolute masters of their craft making amazing things, what I really love to see is things like this, where people with the know how decide to experiment and try new things. This was so satisfying.
Hey thanks. Glad you are here.
Dad
Love your enthusiasm!

That handle up close resembles Van Gogh's Starry Night. Beautiful.
Love the videos from the entire Royer team! Just binged parts 1-7 like a netflix show, incredible art and skill!
I really appreciate you sharing your new techniques. I love that about the bladesmithing community.
WTF... this is amazing design, so beautiful.
Artistry and excellence. Truly a joy to watch a master at work.
Beautiful handle, great work as always
That handle looks so beautiful! Smooth shape too!
Ok ..... now that's the best handle I've ever seen! Badass work bro
this is absolutely beautyful!
Absolutely stunning… one question. Couldn’t you have done some polishing with it setup in the lathe?
🤯 Amazing incredible stone handle ! Good job sir
Been looking forward to this video all day!
I love that stone handle and I love even more how enthusiastic you are about it. I am anxiously waiting for the damascening video tough. I want to learn that
This looks absolutely phenomenal! Incredible work Kyle!
Love the purple color! Did I seriously just now notice that you turned your air compressor into a Minion!!! AWESOME!!! I have been so focused on your blades, I only saw the Star Wars posters. I am only half way through the video and if you do it later in the video .. my bad. But the purple stone "core" that you got from drilling the handle could be chopped up into small disks to inlay on other handles and such (like a guitar neck using pearl). That purple is soooo eye catching!
This is so cool! It is amazing to see knifemakers using gemstones in their work. The black inclusions are actually aegirine which occur in almost all charoite specimens. Also I love how far you dove into the world of lapidary work for this one video, it really shows your dedication to the craft.
I don't think words can express the mastery that someone can observe when they see your videos. You have mastered a craft that makes fantasies come to life and it's safe to say that you have inspired me to start working on knives myself. I am starting from zero and have only done a few light decorations on some pocket knife wooden handles. If you see this comment and have time to respond, I would dearly appreciate if you could share some insight on how to start making and working with knives
Hey thanks Helix
wow well done sir ! love the purple stone ,i have never seen that kind before.
I had a blacksmith teach me a great method for squaring those pommel threads. He used his bench vice and a thick rubber spacer washer, with a steel washer on top, so his threading tool sat nice and flush on top of the tang, and could also compress the rubber as he went lower. Helped make sure the first couple threads were perfect so the rest fell into place.
Gorgeous work! That turned out so beautiful it doesn’t seem possible! Amazing work Kyle!
@KyleRoyerKnives When working with stone, when we polish, we use Polishing pads, it’s more like sanding but it’s referred to as polishing and cutting. To cut you use a 50grit pad, then it goes all the way up to 4000grit which gets you super shiny. You should try it with stones. You should try crushing some rocks and mixing them in epoxy to get multi colours and then shaping it.
Thank you for sharing!
Stunning!
fabulous work on beautiful handle ! can't wait to see the final touch
Simply perfect! This knife is a work of art!
Amazing work, Kyle
Beautiful work as always, i think your dagger has named itself, the handle reminds me of VanGough's Starry Night painting.
Beautiful, looks amazing, such beautiful colours. Regards from Down Under.
It has become habit now. OHHH YEAH!! It’s Friday! Getting excited you uploaded a video.
