Making A Purple Sheath (Serenity Pt.9)

  • In this video, you'll learn how I make a dagger sheath from leather. The process begins with laying out and cutting the leather pieces using a cardboard template. Accuracy is essential to ensure a proper fit. Sharkskin is then used for the throat and tip areas of the sheath. Contact cement is applied to the pieces, allowing them to be securely bonded together. The throat and tip areas are marked out, and a diamond-shaped grid is used as a guide for tooling the leather. With the grid pattern marked, the leather is wetted and stamped to create the desired design. Follow along to create a beautifully crafted dagger sheath.

Createx sells a product called uvls clear. It's an amazing product. You can paint bare aluminum with it and then even acrylic paint will bond. There is literally nothing this stuff doesn't bond to. It chemically bonds to the surface of almost anything and then you paint on top of it. The paint bonds to the uvls which bonds to the surface. It's a chemical bond you can't scratch it off you can even paint cheap toy plastic with it and it bonds. You spray it out of an airbrush. I'm a painter and this stuff is a God send. Instead of going through all the old steps to prep a surface, alcohol wash, flame treat etc you skip all that and just spray this on. You wouldn't have had to make a second sheath. Yes dyes work as well I originally bought it specifically for dyes. It really helps those candies pop and keeps them from bleeding without 20 layers of balancing clear.

@@jonny555ive I thought of this possibility also, but the silver lining would contrast better with the purple and black sheath, I don't especially like gold as I think it is very cocky, silver would maybe fit better for the moonlight appeasing sense of the serenity dagger.

Kyle - I know precious little about making knives. I have maybe made 20 in my life. However, I have been doing sheaths for about 12 years. If I may give a few things to consider, sir, if I may be so brazen. First - I am shocked by the resist the dye gave to you. I use acetone in the shop at times and have never seen it resist dye like yours. I am going to test it in my shop and see if I can recreate your experience. Here are my thoughts. 1) Consider using a swivel knife to cut the lines for your grid pattern. It gives a very crisp edge when beveled. 2) You welt shold be about 70% thickness of the blade. That gives a very good fit. 3) Consider buying Masters Contact cement thinner. It will help you with control of the glue. I run mine pretty thin. It will penetrate the fibers better and allow for better adhesion - although it will take another coat. 4) When punching the holes for stitches - consider using a needle slightly larger than the one you use for stitching. It will leave holes that will self heal better and conform to your stitches. 5) May I suggest building a simple stitching pony to assist your stitching. 6) Given that iron dust will turn leather black when it is wet be careful using a used belt. The process is the tannins in the lather reacting with the iron dust causing a chemical reaction and making it black. 7) May I suggest tokenole for the edges. It is so much better than Gum Tragacanth.
Please accept my comments as they are inteded. Something to be given with utmost respect. Your work is amazing and your sheath work is very nice. These are just humble suggestions, sir. AMAZING blade, as always. Thank you for your videos.
