Cockney River

- One of my favorite scenes from the Sci-Fi series Firefly. River's voice always made me sleepy.
For those of you not familiar with the show, I would explain the context in the clip, but it hardly makes sense even in context.
Enjoy! - Розваги
The crew doesn't realize that River is not just copying his accent, she's pulling the accent and attitude FROM HIS MIND!!!
His entire personal history, really.
@@augustwinterman6952 you can bs other people, but you cannot bs yourself lol
That right there? Exactly the kinda' distraction we coulda' used.
To his credit, Badger's not furious. A man who can accept himself is ahead of the game.
The interesting part here is that River is directly reading from her brother's intentions- He wants to get these men to essentially ignore her.
Attacking or playing her up will escalate everything so she instead pulls from their boss's mind the sort of person he would respect enough to ignore- leading to a direct diffusion of the tension.
She then swiftly exits deeper into the ship with a glance at her brother for confirmation of goal achieved (further from serenity's exits- and therefore no longer needing to be 'watched').
This alone shows the sort of work that was being put into these children, a controllable asassin of many faces that could be released into a world, fed orders through advertisments and billboards in plain sight, working on goals that even they didn't fully understand.
i love this analysis so much thank you for commenting it
Thats shown in the interviews of River Tam as well. The business drum up that was released. We also see it when Cap tells River not to touch guns.
Great comment, I was thinking the same as I watched this scene again. This is one of our first real glimpses of what she can do.
LOL!
It's like the advice my dad always gave me for writing papers. "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit."
one of the most interesting firefly moments. Fantastically written and acted. That "I like her" at the end was the cherry on top.
Its bloody offensive.
@@cgavin1 what is
Brilliant scene. It shows how talented Summer Glau is.
I know Badger was saying to himself, "No THAT'S a girl I could take home to meet my mum"
Meet "ME" mum.
If he hadn't sold her off already. :|
and his mum would be like, "I always hoped you'd find a nice girl like her and not another one of those cheap Camden floozies."
"Well, it's bloody high time you brought a decent girl home! You pa and I were practically babies ourselves, and you finally found the one now you're halfway to the grave? He gets his sense of timing from his dear old pa, deary."
One of my favorite scenes as well. She put Badger in his place and made him like it.
Jaynes face at 00:40 was one of my favorite parts of this scene, right after “not really”. That look, impressed with a hint of respect. Totally changed my perspective on the Jayne and River ‘relationship’
I ship it. (Years in the future, obvs)
Can't say I ship River and Jayne, but I like to think she gained his respect. Personally I think River and Mal work better, they both understand things that no one on board can other than Zoë, they survived the Alliance.
@@thitsugaya1224 Wasn't River a minor in the show/movie?
To be fair, she could kill him with her brain.
@@DarthKay093 Yeah lol, I think Mals like 10-15 years too old for River. The totally not a hooker character was a much better fit for Mal.
"Sad little King on a sad little hill."
For those who, like me, have trouble understanding what exactly she's saying:
Sure, I got a secret. More than one. Don't seem
likely I'd tell 'em to you now, do it? Anyone off
Dyton Colony knows better than to talk to strangers.
You're talking loud enough for the both of us though,
ain'tcha? I've known a dozen like you. Skipped off
home early, running graft jobs here and there. Spent
some time in the lock down, but less than you claim.
And you're what? Petty thief with delusions of standing?
Sad, little king of a sad, little hill.
THANK YOU!! but why did she use that accent?
kristo jeksan because it’s his accent.
I got the majority of it, but there were a few parts no matter how many times i rewinded couldn't quite grasp. Like, "don't seem likely I'd tell 'em to you" and "you're talking loud enough..." So thank you, thank you for writing it all down! :D
And it makes perfect sense in context. She's telling who he is to his face, but he can't really acknowledge it, without showing his men that part of his facade is a fraud. He deflects and moves on, leaving River alone, which is what Simon wanted.
That response, though! "I like her". I love this scene!
If this man is in firefly then I’m definitely going to watch the show all the way through.
It's worth noting, for anyone wanting to watch it, that the order in which it aired was not the order in which the writers intended it to be viewed (Fox decision to rearrange it to open with an action scene). It makes more sense viewed in the author's intended order so you can see everything building.
Wont take you long unfortunately
sad li'le king ofa sad li'le hilw
River's fake Cockney accent is truly brillant, nice job!
That really is my favorite scene of the series! Bloody excellent.
too bad can hardly understand the whole dialogue
well it's not really *fake* in the context of the episode. Badger figured she was from "the old homestead" because it was so perfect to him. Of course it was, she took that accent from his mind.
Damn Crowley, you got owned. XD
SamND1967 he was Badger LONG before he was Crowley

For those of you not familiar with the show, WHY NOT?! Go watch it. You're really missing out.
River is a fun character. And Mark Sheppard was terrific at playing a complete bastard in Firefly and Leverage. Awesome actor.
Good in Burn Notice too.
I tried to but Netflix took it off before I could finish watching all the episodes! At least I’ve got a Serenity-travel poster to make up for it!
@@elisabethschmerzler963 Since you've seen part of it, you have enough information to find out if it's worth buying the box set. I recommend it, but that's just my opinion. Well, and the opinion of thousands of other people, but yours might differ.
Currently less than $20 on Amazon.
More proof of Joss Wheddon's skills in both writing and casting.
The casting was almost accidental, 'cause Whedon wanted the part for himself. :)
well what the hell happened to him mate 🤦
@@chrisdiaz3043 I guess he started believing his own press releases. 😁
If only he hadn't gone 'woke'.
River is the perfect example of a strong woman.
So is Zoe and Kaylee
And OMG Inaria!!!
All this without forcing the woke agenda down our throats.
We LOVED these women! And still do.
Josh, get your head out of your a$$ and write like this again!
Something major just have happened to him to go from someone who created this to the debacle that was Josstice league.
Pe'y li'le thief...the Bri'ish is strong wi' this one.
Sad little king of a sad little hill. What a powerful sentence.
NEVER.GETS.OLD.
Oh My God, I Love Summer Glau for this. 😂
I got the urge to watch this clip earlier today, so thanks for the upload :)
I never noticed that her voice gets much more posh when she's telling Simon to call her if anyone interesting shows up
Ahhh it’s CROWLEY
He never knew how much money he was talking to.
I love this scene.
Such a beautiful talented woman ❤️
River has a way of chamelon-ing in situations like these. Could be part of her abilities, but she wasn't just putting on an accent. She chameloned AS BADGER. She BECAME BADGER to get him to shut up
I loved that show
I'd love to see Summer Glau do a British Accent again in another Role.
When she was on Angel she had a Russian accent.
Now that there is the kind of distraction we needed.

@@almishti Not me. River Tam.
@@danielwilliamson6180 I know, I was trying to continue on your analogy. I didn't mean you, I was thinking of Badger! :)
Is it just me, or did River just verbally castrate Badger?
River just ruined this man's whole career.
She went a-badger culling
@@swigzby And Badger liked it! That was the best part. xD
I'd like to imagine this is actually Crowley from an alternate world in Supernatural.
Soooo in a way, Supernatural/Firefly crossover. Lol
You say this is Crowley. When I see Supernatural, I say HEY IT'S BADGER!
@@Elthenar or Canton Delaware from Dr who
Well, he eventually became King of Hell. :)
Not an easy accent to imitate.
Or understand! I'm from the US and have been in England for 19years....still can't understand some accents!
The cockney accent is amazing. Alan Ford has the best.
Dude plays in an American sci-fi show where someone has a fake British accent. Then goes on to be in a British sci-fi show where he has a fake American accent.
I didn't forget it. This clip is for River's speech and the context of it. Jane's comment adds nothing to what River said.
I'm aware of Bring Back Firefly. It's not gonna happen.
Am I just bad with accents? I thought Badger was Irish.
As someone from London, she sounds irish
whiskey-soaked Irish with a severely IQ malnourished speech impediment at that... she must be from Donegal.
Crowley!!!! #SPN ❤
WILL DM
The lip smacks are eeeeeeegh
that accent is appalling
Omg is nobody else going to say it? This is an unbelievably bad accent, I love her but just the worst coaching here...
I want to say that on the DVD extras, Summer talked about how she 'learned' this accent, whatever its quality, during lunch while filming and did the best she could. It's not great, but faking almost any kind of British accent from anywhere on the isle is not easy.
You must be on drugs or lying to think this accent is spot-anything.
I think you are thinking with your little cockney here, you have to objectively separate your feelings for how hot you think she is from the fact that this accent sucks. Try.
As if natural cockney accent is any beautiful
keep in mind though that it's not a straight from England accent, it's a Cockney accent filtered through however many years Badger and/or his ancestors have been living in Persephone or wherever in space with their dialects and accents mingling and changing in ways we earth-bound humans are unaware of.
