Awesome Firefly Firefight

- I do not own Firefly, it is the property of FOX and Joss Whedon. If I did own it, I would be eating popcorn and enjoying a sixth or seventh season of Firefly.
This is one of my favorite parts of the Firefly series, so I captured it and made it easy to find on UA-cam. Before anyone asks, this is from the tenth episode and can be watched on Hulu.com in America, and here if you can't use Hulu: www.surfthechannel.com/show/76...

The subversion of the silly "He has to fight this battle alone" trope is just great: "No, no it's not!"

Honestly it feels a little hamfisted. Added just for comedy. I mean it's still funny. But they could have done it better x)

He was hurt bad enough that even if he wanted to do it for himself, he probably couldn't.
I really laughed out loud at that part!
Afterwards...
Mal: I know you all took up arms in that piece of action back there. How you faring with that, Doctor?
Simon: I don’t know. I never shot anyone before.
Book: I was there, son. I’m fair sure you haven’t shot anyone yet.
Book was by far my favorite. The most dangerous and complex man on the crew, next to Mal.

While the Bible is quite specific about murder, with malice, without cause, etc, it is quite clear on the expectation of self defense and the possible inevitable outcomes. There is a passage about encountering a theif in your home and dealing a deadly blow in the night vs in the day. One can simply read this as killing a at night good, killing during day bad. But you have to remember the bible is all about metaphor(as the teachings of pandimentional meta-beings tend to be). 'Dark' and 'light' sway towards knowledge and ignorance. If I KNOW you have a weapon and intend to do me or mine harm I am justified in my defense of your aggression. If I KNOW you are unarmed, looking for some food so your belly stops hurting, not so much. If I DO NOT KNOW why you are skulking around my living room after forcing open my door, well... That's going to be an interesting conversation, and i suggest no sudden movements. Everything is clear in hindsight. But hindsight by its very nature is after the event occurs. And let's not forget the Bible was written by warmongers during times of intense tribalism. Do not kill yours, but those other jerks? Ice 'em. [Seriously, there's some effed up stuff done by the supposed heros of scripture, but because it was done to the not us groups its all ok....right?]
This encounter is clear. Niska's guards have taken Mal and Wash, obviously intent on doing harm. For the protection of the flock the wolves will spill their blood.
Disclaimer: Not a theologian/follower/theist/etc, but have spent some time and effort disecting their arguments. Im just some jerk on the Internet. Ultimately the vast majority of religions, when boiled down to their base message, convey one simple idea I feel we can all get behind: DONT BE A DICK, or god help you for I wont. ;)
@@zombieregime Oh no, I completely agree with that statement. I'm just saying he's got a way of saying one thing and doing something completely the opposite.
The Bible prohibits murder, not killing. If you're a soldier defending a point, there's the expectation of potential combat, and with that, death.
It really is criminal we never got more seasons
Agreed
I second that
Yep, I agree. Same thing is with FOX's other shows from the 1980s-2010s like Alien Nation (1989), Harsh Realm, Greed with Chuck Woolery, Fastlane (2002), Wonderfalls, Point Pleasant (2005), Drive (2007), Lone Star (2010), Terra Nova and The Chicago Code. All these shows had one season as well because FOX never gave them a chance.
Sad part is that all of those shows that had one season are good shows too.
The movie tried to tie up some of the loose ends but just ended up creating more questions with a solidly hollow taste at the end.
@@movietv20249 terra nova really hits home, that show had a great cast great writing it would still be running today if the @#$€¢©%™ numbskulls hadn't have cut it
"No power in the verse can stop me." That line scared the crap out of me as I finally realized what the united worlds were doing.
Scared the crap out of Kaylee, too!
I live for every moment we get a glimpse into Shepard Book's past, especially the short and understated ones. Calmly demonstrating that he's at least as good a soldier as Zoe, Mal and Jayne, and has clearly shot so many people in his life that it does not even register anymore. After all the dark shit he did and witnessed in the name of the Alliance, this is just an average day on the job for him, and Zoe looks at him and knows. No dialogue, just body language. Book's moments are so good.
There are a few firefly comics, one is about Shepard's past, all very nice.
I love how with all of the pew-pew future guns, Zoey's just waltzing around with a fuckin' lever-action repeater XD
Hard to argue with an ounce of high speed lead.
Sadly this was one of the reasons some moronic higher-ups didn't liked this show, too low tech, no lasguns, no Rubber forhead aliens and so on.

My favorite line in that clip,,:Do you want to meet the real me now?" One of the better episodes in show full of great episodes, though far too few.
I came back to this episode after reading the Serneity official novelization. And when he said this with that tone of voice, all I could think of was the Operative's thoughts on how if Mal had been found by the Alliance as a child and molded properly, his natural talents and drive would have made him a terrifyingly effective Operative.

The part that always bugs me about the shootout is that Jayne has Vera out, dressed for a party... never let her dance. So sad.
Plus that's a DSM type rifle, he'd be better off taking pot-shots down the hallway.
Honestly I wish they had not made Vera so obvious that its a Nerf gun. I mean at least paint over teh fake bullets and use some real shell casings in the back stock LOL
He uses Vera to kill the guard at 0:42 but that was it.
@@beamerstrumpet Vera isn't a Nerf gun, it's a Saiga-12 shotgun with sci-fi modifications, and is a reused prop from the movie Show Time. All of the guns in Firefly are real guns. Jayne's revolver is even a real LeMat black powder revolver; there's a couple scenes where you can see it's still a cap-and-ball gun, not a cartridge conversion, where it's backlit and you can see light through the holes in the percussion cap nipples shining through the chambers, which shows the gun is actually unloaded.
@@Swindle1984 Maybe so man, I have the firefly encyclopedia, and the "mag" certainly looks Nerf. im gonna check the book tonight for sure.
No power in the 'verse can stop me. Kaylee was genuinely scared of river after this scene.god I wished we had more than one season to explore these characters
3:35 “No power in the ‘verse can stop me.” 😵
Considering she psychically aimed, that was aimbot right there.
She is one of the only characters who can say that and not have it come off as arrogant.
3:22 - One of the most awesome, and yet most horrifying, moments in the series, that moment when we get a glimpse of just _what_ the Alliance was turning River into:
The ultimate weapon.
Just her Bad Ass ending scene in the Movie tells it all. One girl slaughters a dozen reavers, then is twitching to let loose on the Alliance troops.
True, she wasn't the first, either, according to the books. Plus, they weren't finished with her when Simon broke her out. Guess nobody cared enough to risk everything to get her predecessors out.
@@Creasy5678 He also sacrificed EVERYTHING he had, and was to save her. His fortune, his career, his reputation, his future.
@@MrShadowpanther3 Or perhaps her predecessors were unable to get the word out to someone who was smart enough and wealthy enough to figure out the code, find where they were, get the resources together and do the rescue!!!
The look on Kaylee's face when she gets the first inkling of just what River is capable of.
I love how character focused this story is, with Kaylee demonstrating a believably low level of heroism, and how consequences for decisions made in 'The Train Job' play out in this episode. Then consequences from this episode play out in following episodes - this was pretty much the end of Kaylee and River's relationship, as they weren't nearly so close as they'd been previously.
The whole show was so character focused. That's why it was so good!
Great observation about Kaylee and River. I never thought about that.
But Kaylee Fry's gentle spirit was one of the Keys to River Tam returning to " Sanity " , back to the real world .
To be fair, maybe it was Kaylee's first firefight. In the book Black Hawk Down, a veteran US special forces operator, says that basically, in your first firefight, you spend the first ten minutes scared shitless, and that after about the ten minute mark, is when there's a change, that internally the mind starts saying things like 'how dare they shoot at me,' etc and that's when you start to fight back.
It's like how my Kali instructor talks about how being punched in the nose is also kinda a wake-up call in a fight as well.
Also, with Kaylee & River, River shoots three guys with her eyes closed and says 'No power in the 'verse can stop me,' that's gotta be a little creepy.
@The Program Right. Its clear she wants to be brave, she just doesn't know how to act on it, and we're all deeply sympathetic. She has lots of heart, just not that kind. She's not a craven coward, she's just a gentle person.
Zoe's "Okay then" after Book just half mindedly casuals a dude's kneecap one handed at a glance. I'm right there with you girl!
Which itself was a _quite_ _literal_ payoff for the conversation they had while everyone was loading up for this.
Zoe: "Don't the Bible have specific things to say about killing?"
Book: "Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzy on the subject of kneecaps."
Then he proceeded to kneecap every one of his targets in the actual fight. Effortlessly. Which means he had some sort of (at this point) unexpected and unexplained marksmanship training. Unfortunately, that only ever gets revealed in "A Shepherd's Tale" instesd of the intended slow burn for the life of the series.
Man, the writing in this series is amazing
"...the real me." I've never seen a work with Nathan Fillion playing the villain. This moment in the episode made me realize he'd make a really great one.

Literally, if they sent River in to rescue Mal, she could have done it, leaving a pile of bodies in her wake without wasting any bullets.
They didn't know that at the time
River's really not right in the head. "Sending her in" implies she could connect the part of her mind that knows someone needs rescuing with the part that know how to do that. There are only a few points in the series where she comes close to that connection, and none of them involve planning ahead.
@@sarahmesser3359 I think your entirely missing the real river. She appears to be crazy on first glance, but as you continue to watch you realize she's alot more there than people give her credit for.
There isn't a line that comes out of her mouth that doesn't carry meaning with it, it's just that the people around her lack the necessary knowledge to understand it. Example: "Two by two, hands of blue"
It is also important to keep in mind that river is a telepath, she is literally always in the minds of the people around her. She is more aware of the situation than anyone, because everything they know, she knows.
Don't get me wrong, the training at an early age and the knowledge in her head has left her cracked to say the least, but not full blown.
Except, at this point her combat skills are more of a reflex reaction - it's not something she can control until later after Miranda. Which, unfortunately, we'll never get to see now except for that one awesome fight with the Reavers.

That seems to be the opinion and might even be cannon. If it is then whatever solar system they're inhabiting must be many dozens (hundreds) of times larger than our solar system.
Between the TV series and the TV movie Serenity the crew must have visited dozens of planets capable of supporting human life without the need for space suits. All the travel times between planets was done within weeks if not days or less. It must be a very interesting solar system to say the least.

IMHO the only part of the entire episode was Zoe's forward-roll. She wasn't wearing the body armor she had on in other episodes (I can forgive her taking fire if she was nearly bullet-proof) but that stunt should have been done differently. Still, if that's the biggest gripe about this series (other than Fox canceling it grrr) then the whole series was a bright gem in the rough.
Jayne not using Vera more was my gripe. Far as I can tell the only time he fired Vera was to take the guards in the security booth. Maybe he was worried about overpentration?
...and strong female leads is a new thing... 😎
These are done Right, not Right in yo face
It's almost like allowing your characters to have flaws and strengths makes them well rounded
Though Firefly did have that massively cringey plot with the brothel. It got so over the top, with the town public bj, lol. Too bad because even that episode had it's good moments.
I know it’s about the firefight and all but how about Wash putting Serenity right on the money at the dock?
Unpowered, from how many hundreds of thousands of miles out too!
The action is a bit stiff... but all around entertaining.
I read online the reason the guns sound so strange is because of "chemical propulsion." is it possible for modern guns and is it like a substitute for gunpowder?
Gunpowder is nothing more than chemical propulsion. There are probably any number of other chemicals you could use to create rapid high pressure, to propel a projectile.
A fuel, and a built in Oxidizer is really all you need. Although it is said in the episode where Jane has to fire Vera in a vacuum that Vera needs "air around her to fire"... which typically is not the case for propellants. They come with the oxidizer built into the chemical. Thus can fire underwater, vacuum of space, wherever.
I have seen people shave a bunch of Strike Anywhere match heads to get the Phosphorus Sulfide(fuel)/Potassium Chlorate (oxidizer) to pack in a reloaded shell casing. Does not provide the velocity of modern powder, but still quite effective... if inefficient.
So absolutely plausible the weapons could be operating with some other propellant mixture.
That fight scene is somehow a mix of cringy and campy and still manages to be awesome...
Hold up... isnt that they guy from Serenity???
