Hey everyone! Pretty overwhelmed with all the positive comments this video has received over the last 5 years. If you enjoy my playing here, feel free to check out my other videos on my channel! ua-cam.com/users/colmlindsayvideos
Outstanding Colm!! “Don’t take me alive” was spot on man. It’s nice to see a younger player going back and playing some great classics too, and Steely Dan isn’t the easiest band to emulate either. Great playing and thanks for the video! I’ll be watching this a few more times I’m sure.
@Eric Frost Exactly - if I have had a bad day I check this out - SD is my favorite band of all time and Colm KILLS these solos. Love it - keep'em coming Mr. Lindsay!
These are NOT easy solos to play! These are very, very cleanly played renditions which were originally played by some of the top session players in the world. Early members of Steely Dan such as Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter were certainly no slouches either. Very, very well done!
Casparus Kruger hi CASPARUS ... i play guitar & i've always known how good skunk was , but it wasn't until recently that i've come to appreciate just how damn good denny dias was ... excellent melodic solos.
Casparus Kruger I agree. I must admit that I still have great respect for Elliot Randall. Can you imagine Reelin' in the years without his full fingerboard coverage on that track. Magic playing.
I am astonished that 75 people disliked this. I have played thirty plus years. I teach guitar at a university. This is great. Your tone sounds amazing as well. I am firm believer that we should give a compliment where a compliment is due. Excellent job
I'm absolutely shocked by the level of precise coordination you excercise when playing! I can't imagine playing all those solos consecutively. That must've taken a lot of practice and determination. Big props to you Mr. Lindsay.
Thanks Tony, at the time I did these tunes with an SD tribute band so I felt like throwing this video together, it's extremely difficult music for sure
Shocked at not only the note for note but the tone for tone… the Steely Dan catalog represents a generation of the greatest guitarist's to string it up! You lay it down perfectly just awesome man!!
Been playing over 50 yrs and this kid has it really going on. Check out those great long fingers just made for guitar or piano..and he obviously has the passion and ear to match his manual dexterity...plus great taste in music..I am so envious
I've been playing since '65 and I echo Jim Wilson. You have got really superb chops there, Colm. Take it from somebody who's been trying to polish the intro to "Take Me Alive" for about the last 2 months now!
cat strollers: don't get down on the fat fingers! Check out Redd Volkaert - biggest, fattest fingers in the biz, and he has no trouble! Let him inspire you!
coffeecoffe25 Mate it's just like everything in life - there'll always be people further along the road than you and others that haven't got to where you're currently at. The thing is to learn and be inspired from/by the former and to pass on your knowledge and inspire the latter. Music's not a contest it's an all in, free for all funfest !!
You have enough guys stroking your ego, Mr. Lindsay - and rightly so. You are one amazing technician. I've been playing professionally for 30+ years and I can't do a single one of those to that perfection. The only little tiny suggestion I will very humbly make is: also work on developing your own style. You sound like 8 of the best session players in recording history, and that's freaking AWESOME. But make sure you carve out some Colm Linsday, too.
Ah kid just keep jamming steely Dan. Find enough other steely Dan fans to make a great cover. Band. They are all.old and eventually will pass on and those hungering for their lost heroes will paymad cash to have you help them relive the past
SO you didn't even check out anything else he does? You watch this one video and think you have wisdom to depart? Pretty presumptuous! So nice to make about you :-(
I am warming hands in the bonfire I just made from my pile of guitars I am currently burning. Kudos, hats off, killer chops, awesome intonation, great ear totally wonderfully pro level. Thanks for sharing.
Steely Dan always had some of the best musicians in the business on their records.. to move from one solo to the next is extremely difficult this guy is very good!
The late comedian George Carlin once observed his dog doing what dogs do, then mused that if he could do that, he'd never leave the house. You must have spent a lot of hours in that room, man. Must be quite gratifying to make that Strat talk like that. I'm glad you find time to gig because you need to be heard. Amazing.
Some people can play the notes, but the feel isn't there. For me, this was a great example of when someone has both... What a pleasure to hear. Beautiful. :)
Every time I get into an SD mood, which usually lasts a couple of months or so, I have to come back to this video, so I can see how it's executed - with perfection.
Always find myself coming back to this video. Each solo is incredible, and what makes it even more impressive is that you know them all so well that you can play em back to back.
What an incredible feat.. not only have you captured the leads note for note with perfect timing but you've nailed the tone of so many different guitarists using only one guitar.... incredible. What a treat. Thank you for posting.
Learning these parts perfectly makes you not only feel one with each of these iconic songs but also puts you in Fagen and Becker's mind set. It's truly remarkable how good this stuff is.
Carlo Volpe OK, I'm curious. What don't you like about this? Do you not like the the original riffs, or Colm's work. Many guitarists would eat a bag of roaches every day to play this well. Why all the hating, professor? In your mind... who's good?
Carlo Volpe I might not be the best, but I too play guitar, since '74. And I know when I like something. Was in a couple cover bands in the 80's in my area. We had alot of fun, & nobody gave us any flack like you are giving this person that knows what he's doing. Instant Kharma!
One of my all time faves... used to play the "tapes" in my car on cross country trips - for days! Oh to be the young wild and crazy kiddie hippy again... such fond memories,,,,
Amazing! You absolutely nailed every one of those solos! I've been listening to Steely Dan my whole life and I've seen them live 6 times, you're about as close to the real thing as I've heard a guitarist come!
Hey Colm, you have mad chops. Love the little takes you made to the solos. If I am ever in Ireland, I'm coming to watch your band. I'm a huge SD fan and have seen them a half dozen times. But I woke up this morning looking for a new challenge in my life. I decide to learn all the guitar solos from my Steely Dan Guitar Solo Book. True story. Looked on UA-cam just for kicks and found out that you are the cover master for these solos. Watching you has inspired me to go upstairs and get to work. Thanks for posting. I'm all smiles after watching this.
So grateful when I bump on videos of a TRUE musician. Thanks Colm for posting these - what a great sound you have, the Steely Dan fans we are a SO grateful. Thanks !!
#ColmLindsay, you are a serious talent. Getting the notes to sing is one thing. Getting the tone of these world-class guitarists. The phrasing. The effortless flow from one style to the next. Magic, man.
Wow, unbelievably accurate recreations of those solos, and that covers a lot of brilliant session musicians. My personal favorite was the Larry Carlton Kid Charlemagne solo.
Just came back to this. 6 years later it still blows my mind. Colm, if you are still getting these comments, please tell us about your signal chain. I can't believe the meaty overdrive tone you get out of your strat especially on the opening couple. Drew Zingg's solos are my favourite.
You look like a young Rory Gallagher(With shorter hair!) and the best compliment I can give you is that you can play that guitar nearly as good as him. I can't give anybody higher praise than that because he was the greatest. I really enjoyed this video and especially the intro to Don't take me alive which happens to be probably my favourite intro to any song.
I love Rory’s playing, but to me he was more about passion & playing freely, whereas Colm plays those mind-bogglingly note-perfect covers of some of the greatest electric guitar solis ever recorded with a positively berserk level of precision and rhythmic exactness, rhythmic flair more typical of a bebop pianist or drummer- stunning, stunning playing! Just brilliant!
Colm this is just great man. I remember breaking down kid C years and half as good as you. The best I've heard on youtube. I assumed you were probably American. Was glad to see your a Wex man as I'm a Dub. Kudos Man
Hillary Chapman yup and I’ve noticed a few other expert players doing it as a slide also, even though Graydon couldn’t make it any more clear that it’s a bend
It’s funny, I put this video up 6 years ago (having learned everything by ear) but when the video of Jay demonstrating was uploaded a year or two ago, I got an influx of comments telling me I was playing it wrong.
Amazing job, these are some of my favorite solos and you absolutely killed it. Could you possibly share your pedal board and amp setup? You got quite close to the original tones.
Style, tone, feel,,,this is what excellence is all about!!! Set a very high standard here...covering SD songs probably the most difficult unless you are 100% invested into detail!!! Great ears...covering some of the best guitar sols ever recorded...and the most scrutinized in studio.
Very Nice! Only thing is there is already a Larry Carlton. You have such an amazing gift.Do your own stuff.Very polished and great tone. What I have noticed is with the exception of a few bands the tribute bands fade.YOU CAN DO YOUR OWN MATERIAL! The bar crowds love the songs they know and a good way to make some quick cash but in the long run its a deal with the devil.
Uh, it's a Steely Dan solo video. Which he absolutely & thoroughly nails. The title of the video is "Medley of Steely Dan Guitar Solos". Pretty sure this videos purpose is to accurately showcase Steely Dan solos. Which, again, he absolutely blisters. Also pretty sure he realizes there's already a Larry Carlton. Why do I have this weird feeling that, if he did indeed post a video of his "OWN MATERIAL" as you referenced above, you would comment "YOU CAN DO STEELY DAN SOLOS!". Geez......................
Hey everyone! Pretty overwhelmed with all the positive comments this video has received over the last 5 years. If you enjoy my playing here, feel free to check out my other videos on my channel! ua-cam.com/users/colmlindsayvideos

Dude, sick. Can you tell me where you got the tracks? To dub over?
Thanks Jonathan. To be honest I got them all from different sources, UA-cam etc and spliced them together how I wanted the medley to go!
you are a guitar god - wish I had the mind if not the fingers for all that!
@Eric Frost Exactly - if I have had a bad day I check this out - SD is my favorite band of all time and Colm KILLS these solos. Love it - keep'em coming Mr. Lindsay!
Who are the 48 Philistines who don't like this? Jesus, I wish I could play like you. Bravo!
Me too bro awesome skill.
Dude, if I had a penny for the number of times I've come back to listen to this, I would have at least a dime.
Back again
Best eight minutes I've spent on UA-cam in a long time.
This.
Fact is, anyone who knows anything about playing the guitar can see just how fantastic this guy is.
Makes you realise what a special talent Walter Becker was. Credit to the master and his apprentice.
Stunning performance! Bravo!!
As I said before. Great player but should play his own music.. just my advice…
These are NOT easy solos to play! These are very, very cleanly played renditions which were originally played by some of the top session players in the world. Early members of Steely Dan such as Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter were certainly no slouches either. Very, very well done!
Casparus Kruger Thanks a million for that comment, really appreciate it!
Casparus Kruger hi CASPARUS ... i play guitar & i've always known how good skunk was , but it wasn't until recently that i've come to appreciate just how damn good denny dias was ... excellent melodic solos.
with your feel and style-- you should be playing a free flowing guitar that doesn't restrict you like a high end ibanez or jackson soloist
Casparus Kruger I agree. I must admit that I still have great respect for Elliot Randall. Can you imagine Reelin' in the years without his full fingerboard coverage on that track. Magic playing.
None but the best for Steely Dan and Allman Brothers
I am astonished that 75 people disliked this. I have played thirty plus years. I teach guitar at a university. This is great. Your tone sounds amazing as well. I am firm believer that we should give a compliment where a compliment is due. Excellent job
Thank you Bobby. Don’t mind the dislikes, this is the internet after all! Appreciate the message 👍🏼
Prob just extremely jealous.
I'm absolutely shocked by the level of precise coordination you excercise when playing! I can't imagine playing all those solos consecutively. That must've taken a lot of practice and determination. Big props to you Mr. Lindsay.

Shocked at not only the note for note but the tone for tone… the Steely Dan catalog represents a generation of the greatest guitarist's to string it up! You lay it down perfectly just awesome man!!
What must you be like now, 4 years later. Fantastic.
Been playing over 50 yrs and this kid has it really going on. Check out those great long fingers just made for guitar or piano..and he obviously has the passion and ear to match his manual dexterity...plus great taste in music..I am so envious
jim wilson Thank you very much Jim!
Colm Lindsay
you are quite welcome..you look young but you play like an experienced older player
I've been playing since '65 and I echo Jim Wilson. You have got really superb chops there, Colm. Take it from somebody who's been trying to polish the intro to "Take Me Alive" for about the last 2 months now!
Yeah good call, he seems really "held back"!
cat strollers: don't get down on the fat fingers! Check out Redd Volkaert - biggest, fattest fingers in the biz, and he has no trouble! Let him inspire you!
unfuckingbelievable. thanks for depressing the hell out of me. I was going to play guitar, now I'm going back to bed and pull the covers over my head.
Cmon brother you can do this go upstairs and play!!:) it's ok be you!
coffeecoffee25 Don't be like that :'(
coffeecoffe25 Mate it's just like everything in life - there'll always be people further along the road than you and others that haven't got to where you're currently at. Epi Phone - giving you two thumbs up for your comment
Thanks mate, I'd love to return the sentiment, but it'd just make me look really self centered though eh, he he.
Who in there right mind could possibly give this guy a thumbs down.
You are spot on!
justin bieber fans
He is very sloppy, e.g. on the Peg solo.
Only those who are jealous, because they want to play this good.
Sloppy huh,... Let's hear you play it then
What a monster guitarist with a great ear. I have been playing guitar since 1970 and I can tell you that this guy is legit.
so great to see someone under 40 finding these great tunes
And closing it out with the solo from 'Bodhisattva'....man, that was sick!! Exceptional!
You sir, are a genius. I have never heard such a stunning tribute to all the great guitar work in Steely Dan's music, in one piece. Thankyou.
You are good enough to be in Steely Dan. Very inspiring!
You have enough guys stroking your ego, Mr. Lindsay - and rightly so. You are one amazing technician. I've been playing professionally for 30+ years and I can't do a single one of those to that perfection. The only little tiny suggestion I will very humbly make is: also work on developing your own style. You sound like 8 of the best session players in recording history, and that's freaking AWESOME. as said by jakesnake66 while acceptng his 12th grammy.
dumbass
Colm Lindsay you've passed the audition. Outstanding!
Cold absolutley awesome you have the magic that Larry and all the great players had with the Dan ....

Best Steely Dan guitar covers ever! Very excellent!
Great Performance! You really nailed the phrasing and the bends through every solo.
Is there, in fact, gas in the car?
Nice playing!
Thank you Andrew! There's still some gas left!
Yes, there’s gas in the caaaaar.
yes there's gas in the car
Don’t forget the test tubes and the scale...
ask the neighbours?
Some people can play the notes, but the feel isn't there. For me, this was a great example of when someone has both... What a pleasure to hear. Beautiful. :)

Yeah...such a great Player. Thanks so much Colm for having played on my songs: UNDER SHABBY BRIDGE ....Cheers Mr.Gregg
Always find myself coming back to this video. Each solo is incredible, and what makes it even more impressive is that you know them all so well that you can play em back to back.
love the Skunk Baxter & Larry Carlton solos; such feel & rhythm.
world class playing, mate
Appreciate the kind words Patrick!

The music will live on. Awesome talent Colm.
The extra notes in Kid Charlemagne are so good! You are one amazing Guitarist.
Damn. How did I miss this for 5 years?
Unbelievable how incredibly you play these solos from all the different musicians that Steely Dan hired.
Absolutely brilliant. I am awestruck!!!😮
I think only fellow guitar players can know what a terrific accomplishment this medley is. Just killer!
Man, you play those songs like you were the one that wrote them. Sounds awesome!
Lead Scorcher you deaf boy? this sounds like horse shit
Horse shit doesn't make as much noise as you do.
Lead Scorcher smell my shit. I am a guitar teacher. someone should clean the internet up, start by taking this crap down!
Carlo Volpe OK, I'm curious. What don't you like about this? Do you not like the the original riffs, or Colm's work. Many guitarists would eat a bag of roaches every day to play this well. Why all the hating, professor?

Wow, great solo's. Especially the Jay Graydon version of PEG.. Wonderful
One of my all time faves... used to play the "tapes" in my car on cross country trips - for days! Oh to be the young wild and crazy kiddie hippy again... such fond memories,,,,
yep :)
I am now 66 yrs old. I remember when i put the needle of the turntable exactly to my favorite song of the Album. Perfect...
Amazing! You absolutely nailed every one of those solos! I've been listening to Steely Dan my whole life and I've seen them live 6 times, you're about as close to the real thing as I've heard a guitarist come!
That was a real pleasure to see and hear. Thanks for the effort. Dan for life!
Excellent Colm! What a great ear you have….glad I came across this video. Thanks for posting!
Hey Colm, you have mad chops. Love the little takes you made to the solos. If I am ever in Ireland, I'm coming to watch your band. I'm a huge SD fan and have seen them a half dozen times. revinfool Nice one man!! Get that up on UA-cam when you have them learned! Thanks for the comment and all the best! Colm
Took me back in time just now..steely dan part of my life back in those days..still sounds good
Jon Herington would be proud, well done Colm, absolutely fantastic Bro.
Thank you Dennis. Jon is a beast
Some of the best guitar work in modern recorded music. and you did a great job too!
dang... one of my favorite bands of all time. you nailed everyone of those solos.
Maximum respect Colm, I can see the work in this and you nailed most of them!
So grateful when I bump on videos of a TRUE musician. Thanks Colm for posting these - what a great sound you have, the Steely Dan fans we are a SO grateful. Thanks !!
Truly appreciate you putting this together. And I also appreciate your love for Steely Dan. Greatest band of all time!
WOW
WOW
WOW
WOW
I don't know what to say?
Amazing 👌
I really loved listening to you.
Brilliant playing 👌
Colin should change his name to Steely Damn.
+Brian King hahaha! Excellent
Yes indeed.
Steely Da(r)n Good
😎🎸.
Or Jon Herington
That’s great.
WONDERFUL, Mr. Colm Lindsay! For me, they were or are The Band, although they never were a band, haha... I love how you feel the thing. Lovely!!!
This is mesmerising for any Dan fan. Fantastic job Colm. Truly awesome axe playing. Thank you for posting.
Amazing! You've got the technique and the FEEL. Congrats!
Wow. You have a great touch on the guitar and feel for the pocket. Inspiring to see and hear. Thanks for keeping this music alive.
Just discovered you...you are FANTASTIC! You go, Colm...you have everything ahead of you!
Thank you Stevie 👍🏼
#ColmLindsay, you are a serious talent.
Getting the notes to sing is one thing.
Getting the tone of these world-class guitarists.
The phrasing.
The effortless flow from one style to the next.
Magic, man.
Thank you Colm Walter Lindsay . that was a classic, i cant wait for Dublin show . WhooooHoooooo !
This is beyond awesome. Bravo!!!!!!!!!
YOU ARE AMAZING!!!! Very hard solos to play!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, unbelievably accurate recreations of those solos, and that covers a lot of brilliant session musicians. My personal favorite was the Larry Carlton Kid Charlemagne solo.
Colm, you are a master of your instrument. Big up to you. Cheers!
Just came back to this. 6 years later it still blows my mind. Colm, if you are still getting these comments, please tell us about your signal chain. I can't believe the meaty overdrive tone you get out of your strat especially on the opening couple. Drew Zingg's solos are my favourite.
Amazing, Been listening to the Dan for over 40 years and this is incredible. Thanks.
These are NOT easy to play. Well done as a musician myself this is impressive 💪🏼
BEYOND amazing....YOU are incredible,,,, I cannot speak....
WhiteWingedDoveBand Thank you! Your band are a great tribute!
I'm a HUGE Dan freak, so I'm wary of poseurs. I know these riffs like I know the Pledge of Allegiance, and you freaking nailed them! Awesome effort!
Still coming back after all these years. Definitely one of the best covers of Steely Dan I have ever heard. Keep on rockin’!
Pro
You have sick chops, bro. That's California for "You are a badass."
Appreciate that man! Thank you!
Colm this is just great man. I remember breaking down kid C years and half as good as you. The best I've heard on youtube.
I assumed you were probably American.
Was glad to see your a Wex man as I'm a Dub. Kudos Man
I feel like I'm listening to a Steely Dan jam sesh!! LOVE IT!!!
Colm, absolutely brilliant work. I've been a Dan fan for 40+ years. Becker, Baxter and Dias are all proud of this!
Wow. Excellent. And I really dig your tone.
Mouth agape! #headexplosion Amazing Colm! Love it!
Cheers Darrell!
Dude your tone and timing is insanely good.
dear Colm just had to see you play you blow me away every time
OUT--FREAKING--RAGEOUS PLAYING!
Awesome - They should invite you to play their next live performance, you have earned a spot on the roster!
Brad Campbell That's the dream!
Man, if the lead singer your band is half as good at sounding like Donald Fagen as you are at playing those solos it must be a killer show to see.
Yep! Respect! Lot of work gone into that and you make it sound effortless. Good job!
Damn! I didn't think anyone could do all those solos. I'm shocked and beyond impressed.
If steely ever wants another dan.....call the MAN!!!! Well done Indeed mate! !!!
+Jim Morse that’d be the dream call Jim. Thanks a mil 👍🏼
Fantastic -- check out jay Graden playing his Peg solo--the first bit, believe it or it is a bend
Colm Lindsay Dude, from what little I’ve seen you don’t play anything ‘wrong’. Nice work!
Just when I said "Okay, now do Bodhisattva" ... the dude nails Bodhisattva.
Amazing job, these are some of my favorite solos and you absolutely killed it. Could you possibly share your pedal board and amp setup? You got quite close to the original tones.
Unbefrigginlieveable. I can't play a note but can sing every one of these in my head. Such a pleasure!
Style, tone, feel,,,this is what excellence is all about!!! Set a very high standard here...covering SD songs probably the most difficult unless you are 100% invested into detail!!! Great ears...covering some of the best guitar sols ever recorded...and the most scrutinized in studio.

Awesome!
at last, someone using the word awesome in the right place
Very Nice! The bar crowds love the songs they know and a good way to make some quick cash but in the long run its a deal with the devil.
wow. what a jerk.
'Original' music is not the be-all end-all of existence. Most of us still have a lot to learn from the masters.
Check out my original music on my channel Tom! Thanks man!
DUDE!!!!! Rediculously good playing on these complex leads crafted by geniuses!!!
Colm...Wow, well done my friend...great idea for a medley of the greatest band EVER! Thank you, will listen to you a million times..Rising Star
