  • From a 1988 concert, in which Larry performs some of his famous guitar solos. You'll hear those from:
    The theme to the television series "Hill Street Blues"
    Kid Charlemagne (Steely Dan composition)
    Don't Take Me Alive (another Steely Dan composition)
    Put It Where You Want It (The Crusaders).

    There's a good reason why Fagen and Becker used Larry on so many recordings. He is simply the best there is at coming up with incredible solos.

      Wow! A really old post! But you are right Vic. There is a reason that SD went through a baker's dozen of side men in the studio. You can beat your head against the wall trying to explain what you want to hear, or start bringing in lead men one at a time to hear if they have the refreshing and surprising first take on your mix. I think chances are, you will finish and find your sound better and faster with the interview.

    What I love about LC is that he's a really a composer who's also a great guitarist. It's not about shredding or showing off with a ten minute solo, it's about adding something special to the tracks he plays on - it could just be a couple of phrases, but they're always memorable.

    What kills you is Larry said he improvised the solo on Kid Charlemagne. Can you imagine being able to just casually improvise a solo that ends up being on most peoples' "greatest solos of all times" short list?

    • @patrickwhitehead9931
      @patrickwhitehead9931 2 роки тому +1

      Most of Steely Dan guitar solos are improvised, if you look around on you tube you can find alternate takes of the guitar solos . Its fun trying to reconsile those alternates with the songs that we know and love.

    • @nulife022
      @nulife022 2 роки тому

      @@patrickwhitehead9931 I think completely improvised may not really apply here. The chord progression behind the solo obviously is arranged. It would be interesting to know if Fagen and or Becker arranged it or Carlton. I'm guessing Carlton because it sounds like his solo work. Great players and writers all.

    remember back in the day, when all hit TV shows had their own killer, instantly-identifiable theme songs? Magnum PI/Simon & Simon/Hill Street Blues/et. al. I'm pretty sure Larry Carlton played on most of them.
    This was back when real musicians composed, performed and recorded these iconic tunes in very short time periods and did it like it was nothing. the late 70s -+ mid 80s was the golden era of the LA Session musician and so many great players and tunes came from that era.

      I agree about "Don't take me alive", but "Kid Charlemagne" is just a fantastic solo too. Besides, I must say that I just discovered that the "Bad sneakers" solo (in Steely Dan's "Katy lied"), maybe the most emotional guitar solo ever recorded, is played by Walter Becker ! Look up The Daggers of Megiddo. This is where the Steely knives reference comes from. Only these 7 consecrated knives can kill the anti-christ. Knives of mere steel cannot do it. The entire Eagles song is about the first church of satan, formerly the "Hotel California". Also, Steely Dan is a marital aid from a porno I believe.

    I may have been at this show. I saw him about this time in Los Angeles playing that black strat. Damn is he excellent. He's got it all down. Style, feel, tone, everything. He's so in tune to the band, to the music. The joy of his playing is contagious. I still can't play that "Kid Charlemagne" solo right after all these years. There's just so much nuance in his style. Amazing.

    I went to a LC concert in Newport Beach, CA the same year he performed this concert, though there weren't any Steely Dan songs in the repertoire... an unforgettable show to be sure!

    Incredibly challenging and sophisticated musicianship, made to look as easy as making a sandwich. That's what sets apart Larry and the other studio greats that came up when he did, from the rest of the pack.
