It’s sad that Chris Farley died because it seemed like Shrek was made for him. But if it wasn’t for Mike Meyers saving the day, we wouldn’t have got one of the greatest animated movies of all time. RIP Chris Farley & Thank you Mike for saving Dreamworks.
Yeah Shrek really needed a more realistic human look to the face for the kind of movie it was supposed to be, the feel good render is too cartoony, I don't think it would have captured the more serious moments of the franchise
He looks a lot more natural here. Looking at the old test, and some storyboards, I can tell they wanted to go for a really cartoony exaggerated feel, but because of the technology at the time I presume, it just looks really unnatural and ugly
One thing I think makes it really hard for people to comprehend the Chris Farley version, is that they’re not able to SEE how the character of Shrek changes with Chris Farleys voice. His animations and body language here are entirely different than his stiff, blunt, “pissed off all the fucking time” behavior in the Mike Meyers version. And honestly I think it works very smoothly. Obviously it must’ve worked pretty damn well, if they nearly finished his lines for the film. Now obviously this is just test footage, but they clearly didn’t just dub over Mike Meyes voice in the film. They had to change Shreks animations entirely to fit Mikes voice, and his usage of tone.
