    The Emperor set up the battle. The Atriedies were becoming too popular, and the Harkonnens were too rich. The battle wiped out the Atriedes while using most of the Harkonens money

      Currently reading the book, and it was said the entire battle for Arrakis , not just Arrakeen, was equivalent to around 50 years of spice harvesting.
      Was a huge investment.

      The Atreides military, as trained by Duncan and Gurney, was also as good if not better than the Sardaukar, so the emperor had a legitimate reason to think that they might overthrow him.

    You got this movie better than a lot of native English speakers! And you're exactly right about the spice--it's a drug, and when taken in large amounts it gives some people prescience, or the ability to see future outcomes. The space navigators use it to foresee routes for faster-than-light travel through "folded" space that avoid potential collisions. Safe space travel wouldn't be possible without it. Paul is particularly sensitive to the spice because of his heritage (the Bene Gesserit sisterhood's breeding program) and his training, so he is able to see many possible futures. That's why he ended up having to kill Jamis even though he foresaw a possible friendship with him. If Jamis had made a different choice, they would have been friends. And from a metaphorical angle, Jamis did "teach him the ways of the desert".
    In the tent when he sees the vision of the war, he's horrified, not because he doesn't want to be special, but because he foresees a holy war based on people worshiping him as a messiah. So essentially, if he becomes this messiah figure, he might be responsible for the deaths of billions of people. Whether he can avoid that fate, you'll have to see in part 2! It's so good, and moves MUCH faster than part 1. This film is pretty much all set up.

    Movies usually don't explain it correctly. Spice is NOT the fuel for interstellar travel. Dune universe got rid of supercomputers and AI thousands of years before the story and you can't calculate a trajectory without computers. So they use Spice to enhance their mental abilities enough to foresee the safe trajectories instead of calculating them. And so, unless they make new computers, Spice is the only way to make interstellar travel safe, thus the Imperium NEEDS Spice (not just for the elite's own needs)

  • @robovike

    If I’m not mistaken, the Guild Navigators (which we’ve barely seen yet) who calculate the interstellar paths needs huge amounts of the spice to fold space, tripping major balls to plot a course. And the pillaging of Arrakis is allegorical to the treatment of the Middle East and its oil. I hope you enjoyed this, I saw part 2 and it was SO intense!

    The suit recycles all bodily waste products that contain humidity. So they don't drink just reclycled sweat. I will leave the rest to your imagination...
    Arrakis is a harsh planet and the Fremen culture is built around the need to conserve water in order to survive (and in order to fulfill a long term project I will not elaborate on in order to avoid spoilers). That's why Stilgar's act of spitting on the table was not an insult but actually a sign of respect: he was donating his most precious possession to people he was building an alliance with.
    About Paul being shocked and scared by his visions, it's not clear from the movie, but in the books it's stated that the religious crusade his followers will embark on will result in a war that will kill tens of billions of human beings across the whole galaxy. That's why in that scene he is freaking out: he is glimpsing into a future where he is responsible of causing unimaginable destruction and death.

    • @heiniknallkopp9688
      @heiniknallkopp9688 2 місяці тому +2

      Its one of the things that make Dune so great. Paul can take a glimpse into what might become the future but he is unable to actually influence these events, its out of his control. His actions cause a djihad all across the known universe but there is nothing he can do to prevent it.

    The original novels are a bunch of books and side encyclopedias that are between 450 to 600 pages each, it's no easy task to understand the subtile things, the "plans within plans". But what is the hardest thing is to know and be aware of the real world things that are the base on which Frank Herbert developed this future world. Multiple references to genetic memories, mutation, yoga, martial arts, religion... I can talk hours just about how the voice works in real life neurolinguistic programming and such things but I must say that Villeneuve did a great job being faithful to the novel and yet make a movie that anyone can watch without the benefit of reading the novel. It's always a pleasure to watch movies with you, you're lucky we are not neighbors 😂 Love you guys

    Its funny you both mention Star Wars and Game of Thrones, the original novel of Dune (from 1965) was a MASSIVE inspiration to those stories!
    Leto Atreides = Ned Stark - both super honourable and die early. Their stories are VERY similar when you look at them both..
    Paul Atreides = Luke Skywalk - born on desert planet and heirs to great power
    The Voice = The Force - the ability to control people with speaking
    Emperor controlling everything in both Star Wars and Dune. SW took the sandworms from Dune.
    These are just the more obvious inspirations but there's so more nuanced ones too.
    The Dune novel is considered the most influential sci-fi novel for the amount of stories its inspired since it was written. Also, even for english native speakers some of this movie is hard to hear at times! Definitely good to have subs
    Part 2 is AMAZING!! It's such a step up from an already great film. I've seen it twice at the cinemas already. Not sure when itll come out to watch at home but I hope you watch it as soon as its available!!

    1:40 , Dune written by author Frank Herbert is set over 20,000 years into the future. An earlier story series called Foundation from a different writer Isaac Asimov is over 50,000 years into the future.
    These two series from the 1950’s and 1960’s have greatly influenced many well known sci-fi franchises over the last 60 or so years. Star Trek and especially Star Wars were immensely influenced by Dune and Foundation.

    How can the spice grow? An excellent question.
    The biology of Arrakis was altered long ago ( perhaps by the ancestors of the Tleilaxu, biological engineers of the planet Bene Tleilax ), to make a designed living creature the primary predator. This ( 'Shai Hulud' or 'Old man' ), the smaller worms called 'little makers' which live deeper, eat and convert an biological matter they find.
    The worms are chemical factories, which create several products: the 'spice melange', which in humans creates precognition, the ability to see the future, enabling navigators to avoid hazards in space flight.
    It also extends life, and in large quantities causes physical mutations. The Third Stage Guild Navigators do not look remotely human any more.
    The smaller worms can be drowned in water, which causes the bile of the sandworm to become 'the water of life', which enables the survivors ( it a deadly poison to drink ) to recall all of their earlier lives.
    The third product is sand.
    Arrakis was once green, and if Paul had not upset the plans, would have been green again one day. That's what the Kynes family were there fore, why the palm tree waterer mentioned an 'old dream', and why Chani's ( Kyne's daughter ) name is about a new spring.

    Complains about having to learn all these new weird names at the start of the film, but halfway through you’re using all the names perfectly 😂 Better than most reactors even.
    I will not say anything in regards to the plot, at risk of “spoilers,” but one thing I do not think is a spoiler but continues the world building is that everyone in the Dune universe is a descendant from our current world-It’s our extremely distant future. Atreides is meant to be pronounced like Pleiades, as that family are meant to be descended from our Mediterranean cultures, specifically the Greeks. The one thing that disappointed me was the removal of the obviously Arabic words, (ie. “jihad” gets replaced with “holy war”.)
    The spice is often referred to as “the spice mélange,” and the cultures within the Dune universe are meant to be a mélange of our own cultures here on 20th century (now 21st) Earth. Often, that is represented in the diversity of language & the languages (I mean, it is a book after all.)
    As an American, I can tell you that knowing more than one language is very much not common in many places, but the one place where people do have the time and resources to learn multiple languages, since as far back as history can recall, is in the homes of the wealthy and powerful families.
    Only other thing to point out, there is no magic in the Dune universe and there are no aliens. Rather, a mastery of the human mind & body over dizzying amounts of time.

    The novel, Dune, is often seen as un-filmable due to the amount of inner dialog for Paul Atreides and all that is going on in the story. There's some parallels to the addiction we have to petroleum (with the Spice as the stand-in) and its importance to the economy of the world, the religious aspects (the Zen-Sunni religion of the book, the desert peoples who become the Mujahedeen in Paul Atreides' violent revolution against the Imperial system, with the parallels to more radical elements of Sunni Islam), just so much stuff. You have the Atreides, drawing their lineage to Greek heroes from the Trojan War.
    And then you have the Bene Gesserit, the Messiah/Lisan al-Ghaib/the Mahdi... what is fictional and made-up? Is Paul the Messiah... the Mahdi? Or is he only going to use this story as a means to an end?
    It is a fantastic world for storytelling, and I think they did an okay job here. Not perfect, but still a neat spectacle.

  • @zmani4379
    @zmani4379 2 місяці тому

    Great reaction - the Bene Gesserit have breeding programs for humans, and they've spent centuries breeding towards a new level of superior human, the One, who can bridge space and time, and they've been spreading the legend of him as a messiah - they're very close to their goal, and Jessica was supposed to have a girl as another step, but instead she had a son, who has much of this potential; plus, she taught him the special skills only the Bene Gesserit know; plus, the spice has a special effect on Paul, unlocking more of his abilities
    - the story looks at the political role of religions, and it keeps an interesting balance between the idea of this messiah as a fiction, used to manipulate populations, vs the prospect that Paul might really be a genuine messiah
    - this is based on a 60s novel by Frank Herbert; he's very interested in human potential - in this civilization, computers are forbidden (because AI had grown too powerful and threatened humanity)
    - the major powers include the Lansraad, made up of various different houses like the Atriedes and Harkonnen; the Bene Gesserit, a Sisterhood who manipulate from behind the scenes and work to manage humanity's future direction; the Spacing Guild, who manage interstellar transportation, using the Spice; and the Imperium, dominated by the Emperor
    - Herbert himself wrote 6 novels, which fans view as canon; Herbert's son continued his father's series of novels, but those later novels are not as highly regarded - Frank Herbert's first 3 novels were adapted into a sci fi miniseries around 2000; the first book was also adapted in 1984 by David Lynch, in an ambitious movie that flopped, but now has a cult following;
    there had been plans from the 1970s to adapt Dune, by the cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, and there's also a documentary about that project, which never materialized, but which nevertheless inspired many other projects, including Alien

    It's a book from 1965. Really mind-blowing, even now. Five more books after it, all of them the best kind of crazy, but the first is self-contained. If you get into the books, avoid the franchise stuff by different authors, it's all terrible.

    I have a harsh rule for Dune reaction channels. If you edit out the “who will our next oppressors be” followed by the Dune shot…then you think it’s more about you then the movie.
