    "Mama stronger than I think..."
The movie really undersells Jessica. The scene near the end where Stilgar says "Why didn't you say you were a Weirding woman?!" is the only mention of the weirding way, which is one of the coolest parts of the Bene Gesserit.
It's basically super-fast motion by thinking about where you want to be and, through a combination of Prana-Bindu physical conditioning and a very mild time dilation from spice use, to move there faster than others can track. When two Bene Gesserit fight without shields, it's basically a mind battle to see who can outmaneuver the other.

@@MrHartApart Possibly. But being bound would prevent its use if he doesn't know how to free himself. And Paul's spice exposure isn't really super high at this point in the story. The weirding way could have been a big part of Part 2 but is almost completely forgotten.

@@LordVolkov tbh I did not like the second movie. show a scene, start to show substance, jump cut to a new scene with new people. OVER AND OVER. I was told it's kind of like that in the books so I'm planning on doing a double dune Saturday when the new one's available on prime.

    • @davepeesthepool
      @davepeesthepool Місяць тому +4

I think it was in its sheath the whole time. I think he took the knife (sheath and all) off his belt when they tried to take it from him and he was just tucking it back into the belt once they stopped trying to take it from him. It's fremen tradition that you don't sheath a crysknife unless it has tasted blood (the scene where they all cut themselves under the gloves before putting their knives away before Jamis invokes the right of tahaddi nods to this). Stilgar didn't do that in the scene where he meets the Atreides the first time.

Just for some context on how important the Spice fields are; space travel is so expensive and valuable, only the Spacing Guild can do it; all the Great Houses and even The Emperor himself can only _borrow_ space travel. The Atreides ships park inside the Guild super-ships to leave their star system.
In the book just to put it in perspective, it's explained: Even if the Harkonnens were parked right next to the Atreides ship on their way across the galaxy, the Harkonnens wouldn't dare attack them, not in a million years; because doing so would mean getting permanently banned from your Spacing Guild privileges, which is the same thing as being banned from _all_ space travel, period.
The Harkonnens may be making all the spice but only the Guild can use it to make all this space travel possible. And the Guild has the Emperor by the balls to make sure no one holds all that spice hostage.
The Harkonnens have no beef with the Guild, they just want to make themselves Emperor; this means they're predictable and easy-to-control bodyguards over all that spice.
Atreides, on the other hand, are too popular and close to unifying the Houses against the Emperor, so the Emperor figures "Put them in charge of Dune; Leto is a nice guy but too weak to actually do anything; the Harkonnens will predictably get salty and easily kill off the Duke. . . . Harkonnens remember I'm the boss who can take their toy away whenever I want; the Great Houses see Leto die and nope out of doing anything revolutionary for a while. Win-win."
What no one counted on is that Paul is crazier than the Harkonnens.

4:46 - Thufir Hawat is a Mentat: a human that has been trained to act as a living computer. Humans don't trust machines since the Butlarian Jihad (the Dune series' robot apocalypse). That's why the Spice is so important: only the precognition granted by the Spice allows human navigators the foresight to replace computers with the complexity of FTL travel.
9:13 - Funny you should phrase it that way.
9:40 - Well, she IS the LEADER of the Bene Gesserit...
9:46 - That would rather defeat the purpose of the test.
9:59 - Mama stronger than the movie shows. Even cut in two, this story is too dense to be fully told, and unfortunately one of the things that was short-changed was the Lady Jessica's character building.
11:12 - You put that together pretty well. The Bene Gesserit have spent generations developing their mastery over the human mind and body (with the aid of the Spice, of course). The Voice, their combat style The Weirding Way, and the ability to control their bodies so finely that they can choose the gender of their children are just a few of the skills they've mastered. However, there is a portion of the human subconscious that they cannot explore: a dark place that strikes them with such a deep and visceral fear and revulsion that they any attempt to explore it is driven back. (It's subtly suggested that this is the masculine portion of the human group psyche). The Bene Gesserit believe that if they can breed a male capable of learning their techniques, he would be able to explore this dark place, and so they call him the Kwizacth Hadderach, He Who Can Be All Places. Their breeding program is in it's final stages, and the Bene Gesserit had planned to breed an Atreides daughter with the heir to the Harkonnen and produce the Kwizatch Hadderach, but it hit a snag when Jessica fell so in love with Duke Leto that she gave him a son instead of a daughter. The Gom Jibar test was to ensure that their powers hadn't fallen into the hands of a human based enough to use the powers for their own gain.
13:38 - Nah, the burnt hand earlier was just what Paul THOUGHT was happening to his hand in that box. He was expecting to pull a blackened stump from the box, but like the Reverend Mother said, all that was in the box was _pain._
14:46 - They were originally planted as a symbol of the dream people once had to make Arakkis green again, but under the Harkonnen it was just a sign of extravagance.
15:21 - Hunter-seekers like this one only have limited room for sensory equipment, so they operate based mainly on movement. It was only Paul's Bene Gesserit training that allowed him to stay still enough that the device didn't strike him down. Only the momentary distraction of the Shadout Mapes gave him the freedom to act, and only the BG training made him fast enough to catch it.
17:28 - As has been said in some versions, remember how precious water is here. What more sign of respect could their be than to sacrifice some of your own water?
18:50 - Just a small note: in the novel, Liet Kynes is a man. In the '84 version of Dune he was played by Max Von Sydow. There was some small drama when it was announced that a woman would be playing the part, but like someone once said, if the role doesn't depend on being a certain gender, casting doesn't matter either.
27:10 - The Baron is a man of his word. He sent Yueh to join his wife.
27:52 - The shield slowed the poison enough for the Baron to float out of range. He only received a fraction of a lethal dose, though he would have died still if no one had come to save him.
29:11 - The filters in the tent are fine enough that any 'organic' flavor the water had would be removed, but the water would still be flat and warm, so it wouldn't be pleasant.
29:17 - Muad-dib, the teacher of children, knower of the ways of the desert.
32:49- Liet Kynes IS killed by the Saudaukar in the book, but it happens off-screen. In the movie, she gets this epic final moment.
38:14 - Well, he WAS, it's just that his trip came true.
39:32 - That's the meaning of Paul's earlier visions of Zamis killing him: killing makes someone a different person. It's as if the old person had died and a new one takes their place. Zamis 'killed' Paul Atreides so that Usul could rise.

When Paul was suddenly behind Jamis and killed him from there, that was the Weirding Way.
Jamis in Paul's visions was going to show him the way of the desert. And by challenging him to a fight to the death, that's what he ended up doing. In the book, Paul, having killed Jamis, had to take responsibility for Jamis' wife and family. And he says in Jamis' memorial that Jamis was his friend. That is the Fremen way. One of the many things that the books go much further into than would be possible on film without a 24 hour movie heavy with exposition. The films are not perfect. But they do a far better job than either the 1984 film or the SciFi Channel miniseries. This story is massive. This film is only the first half of the first of six books.

The fact that our boy wears the bulls head hat actually ties into the book, because it makes reference to the bull statue, or rather the bulls head on the wall. I forget exactly why in the book, but it’s specifically shot in the movie for a couple seconds I think before the bene gesserit training and they also make another specific shot of it getting boxed up. It’s a reference to House Atreides and the father, but someone here will correct me, I’m sure.

Also speaking of movies back in theaters. Regal theaters are playing the Sony Spider-Man live action movies every Monday. The first one with Toby Maguire was yesterday. Go see the others every Monday for the next few weeks ending with No Way Home in a couple months.

Paul's visions are misleading at furst and are just potential futures and often have double meanings. So the guys speaking to him and showing him the way kind of did show him the way of the desert. Through having to kill him. But in an alternate future they could have been friends.

Maaaaaaannnn... You should TOTALLY do Part 2, then for bonus material; do a screening of the 2000 SciFi mini-series, it is a total made-for-tv version, but it's probably the closest adaptation to the book yet. It elaborates on a LOT of things this version (as amazing as it is!!!) had to present much faster or just skip altogether. SciFi also did Children of DUNE a couple years later too! [It should be available on here for free most times!]

when you said “Pauls first kill…. and it was a black guy” caught me so off guard during that emotional scene I couldn’t help but laugh lmao. But I’m glad you were able to understand pretty much the whole plot of the movie.

Mr. Video... When Paul is exposed to Spice, he can only see possible futures. So he can see a futures where he starts a Holy War, where Jamis became his Friend and Mentor, Where Chani (Zendaya) kills him... You gotta buckle up for Dune Part 2. IT IS A BANGER!!!!!!

They did an excellent job of showing how deadly the sardaukar are. The atreides were easily killing the harkonnen, showing clear superiority over the harkonnen soldiers. However the moment the sardaukar joined the fight, they wiped out the atreides with relative ease, demonstrating their superiority over the atreides.

Great reaction. You picked up on a lot more than those annoying, bobbleheaded social media muppets who do half the reactions, always with the exact same backdrops, same lame collectible toys behind them, dumb-cow expressions on their faces. Always glad to see someone real.

Paul hesitated to kill him because he knows he was going to teach him the ways in a possible future. Now that he's dead someone else is going to have to teach him the ways. 👀. I wonder who that'll be.

I know you don’t really react to any documentaries but I would recommend Jodorowsky’s Dune considering how influential it was in today’s culture despite that version of Dune never being made for being too ambitious at the time
