I traded my PPQ for a PDP last year. I wish I held on to it, paid full price for the PDP and kept both. Walther retooled the PPQ Lower for their new 22 magnum WMP.
The thing about a lot of these pistols is that they can still easily be used for the same purposes as the current production pistols, and if you find a used one and it's all you can afford, you still have a great pistol
P99 trigger is awesome. Unbelievably short reset, which allows me to shoot it faster than any other pistol. Super crisp break. I would disassemble the P99 trigger bar and sear housing then put it in the PDP grip frame. P99 trigger is different but i would not say it is in any way inferior to the PPQ/PDP. I wish Walther kept with the stock P99/PPQ sights over the new design for Glock compatibility. I find the stock sights on the P99/ standard PPQ to be dead nuts accurate. Walther PPQ SC has PPS sights, so I installed XS F8 sights on my PPQ SC without any issues whatsoever. When I went to install Glock Ameriglo i-dot pros on my PDP, it was a NIGHTMARE.
I own a current Gen P99. Though I do enjoy the PPQ, if I had my choice between 1 P99 and 15 PPQ’s and PDP’s, I’m taking the P 99 Edit: actually the Walther P 99 is still in production by Walter, it’s just not in regular import. I actually asked them about this when I called about the warranty.
I own two Walther PDP models, C 4" and FS 5", a PPQ M2 45, and a Canik TP9 DA, which to me is an improved P99. I am very pleased with all of them, being the PDP platform my favorite.
@@v.german11b "perfection" as in Glock took the industry by storm so Walther responded with their own sorta similar thing and are now replacing it with something more Glock-like. Oh wait....
Great video Sootch! I liked the P99 from the Bond franchise, but I fell in love with it when I got the opportunity to handle a used model at my local shop. I ended up picking up a P99AS model in 9mm and it's my go to pistol. I love the AS trigger system; it makes follow up shots very accurate with the short reset while being safe to carry when decocked. I actually like the less aggressive texturing as it makes the pistol much more pleasant to shoot with my off-hand (whereas when I shoot my Gen 5 Glock with my off-hand it about as pleasant as getting smacked with a meat tenderizer). I definitely think the P99AS is still a worthy competitor to Walther's more contemporary pistols.
My first pistol was a Walther PPQ from my local gun store 7 years ago and I never looked back. Upgraded the sights to Trijicon’s, added a Streamlight TLR-7a, slapped it in a Tier1 slim holster and it’s my go to conceal carry rig. Got the SC version and was really disappointed by the aftermarket support and Walther’s blunder on a couple key mistakes. I still love it and work it into my rotation my the PPQ was a home run that more people should have been introduced to.
I have a PPQ M1 (paddle) and a Q4 Tac M2 (button) and the M1 just feels better. the button has that long ridge to protect it and that just digs into my finger. The M1 just sits a lot more comfortably.
I agree about the P99 being a flat-shooting gun. Even in .40, the P99 just felt really easy to shoot. Easier to shoot than a Glock 22 or Glock 23. I couldn’t explain it, but glad to know it wasn’t just me who noticed it. I love ole Sootch00. Wish I had a friend like him.
The P99 was my favourite gun for the last 20 years and it’s always been very dependable. Great features like the paddle mag release and the easily accessible decocker. But this week I sold it and bought a PDP 4.5, just because I wanted a change in the ‘rotation’. A couple of things that I find better on the PDP are that my trigger finger doesn’t ride along the bottom of the trigger guard and the mega slide serrations are much more comfortable to grip. But I do miss some of the P99’s charm.
The PPQ is very the same like the P99Q, which a lot of European police forces use. They keep producing it till contracts run out, which will be at least 10 years
As I recall, the major complaints about the P99 was the kitschy traditional DA/SA & AS trigger w/decocker...as well as the Euro mag release. In the 2nd variants, the mag release has been "improved" ( lengthened )... also the "hump" inside of the trigger guard has be eliminated. The "AS", Anti-Stress trigger is now being appreciated much more for its adaptability to the shooter's desires...the great success of the CANIK TP9 demonstrated this by how it has set sales records and gained wide acceptance for a newly-introduced model from a Turkish manufacturer. Sometimes change can be difficult to accept.
I love my gen 1 p99 I’m glad I picked this up when the opportunity came along !! I plan on passing this down to my son once he’s older , great family air lume I say
The P99 trigger is a completely different system and I think it's the best. I like the gun as it requires double action on the first shot. . The reason is that when I use a gun, I really intend to use it.
I bet a lot of accidental police shootings would be avoided if cops in the U.S. carried P99's instead of Glocks. There have been so many unintentional first shots by cops that end up killing people they didn't mean to shoot.
This is the last year for the P99. I just picked one up. If you want that AS trigger for less money, get the Canik TP9DA. I have both. One advantage of the TP9DA is that it takes 18 and 20 round magazines. Everything else is fairly the same.
May as well throw the Canik TP9 and Mete series in there as well. All these guns are variants of the P99. You can use a Canik TP9 slide on a PPQ, and vice-versa.
Great review! My EDC is a PDP compact. The first time I shot it, was at a training class- and I brought my S&W M&P 2.0 Compact... and my Canik TP9SF Elite SC. The PDP, was my instructor's. He also owns a range and a great gun store. I shot it better than my other two guns. I told him to order me one right there. I'm lefty.. I carry it IWB in a Blackhawk leather belt loop holster. I love it.
Great and timely video! I own a PPQ, great gun, but for my next might get a gen 2 P99. My buddy had a p22 and it was the most comfortable gun I had ever held.
I recently purchased the Walther PPQ, love this firearm and now a huge fan of the Walther firearms. I really enjoy all of your reviews and content including the bloopers and outtakes too. Interested in the new Walther WMP .22 WMR and waiting to see if you do a review, thank you in advance!
The Walther P-88 was legendary as the most factory-accurate 9mm production pistol, typically shooting 0.85" groups from Ransom Machine Rest at 25 yards using the M825 Ball ammunition then manufactured by Federal Cartridge Company (the most accurate factory ammunition in the world at that time). I was always curious if the P-99 retained the accurizing engineering design of the P-88? At 19:07 Hootch shows these three (P-99, PPQ, PDP) slides from the inside side-by-side-by-side, and the reason the P-99 shoots "flatter" is obvious! There is *more metal* up-front in the P-99 slide! Just as adding the mass of a red-dot sight to the PDP causes more muzzle-flip than the PPQ, having *more forward mass* causes the P-99 to *return to rest* faster!
@Kevin Allies I stuck a Glock striker spring in mine and the SA pull was like 3 lbs and DA maybe 6. When I started carrying it I put the old spring back as I was concerned about light strikes, but it's still a great trigger.
20 years ago I had a P99 in 40 S&W. It was the most instinctive shooting gun that I ever had. I didn't need to use the sights to tell you where the hole would appear. However it was unreliable in feeding and I didn't end up keeping it. I got a PPQ a few years ago to replace it. While it had a better trigger, I didn't shoot it nearly as well. Back in January of 2020 I was eyeing a few NIB P99s on a auction site that weren't even being bid on. Problem was that within a few months you couldn't seem to buy them anymore at the $500. Don't know why.
The P99 he purchased for this video is the original model, the one that James Bond uses. The newer models have more slide seriations and are also about $400-$500 cheaper.
@@Matt-to1bi I hear people saying that they are around $1200. That's what I keep seeing them listed for on gunbroker. However, someone listed one for $400 a few months ago and I snatched it up immediately.
try to get ahold of the PDP F series. I got the 3.5 " for my wife and she loves it. I bet Sarah Mac would love it as they were designed for a woman's hand. Work well for any smaller hand really. Sweet feeling gun.
I have the P99 QA and absolutely lover from the first time picking it up to shooting it now. Haven’t had to adjust the sights since it shoots exactly like the target it came with from the factory and like you did it shoots really well rapid fire because it stays on target pretty easily. Great review 👍
The P99 was my first love, currently a PPQ M1 is my OWB winter carry. I may have to pick up a PDP to put an optic on (don’t see it as cost effective to custom mill my PPQ slide).
I really like my P 99 AS. A little practice with the unusual trigger pull and you will be surprised how well you will shoot it. Reset is fantastic and you will find that it shoots very flat and you won't pull shots left and low (for right handers) in rapid fire. Try that with your Glock and it's standard trigger. The Walther P 99 AS makes for a great carry firearm if you are carrying a Glock 19 size firearm. The paddle magazine release rocks for me, no repositioning my grip with my medium size hands. I also have a PPQ and its a has a great trigger, so I'm a fan. Pick up the boxy Glock and try to make it fit your hand. Then pickup one of these Walther's, unless you have very large hands they fit like a glove. In my opinion only, the lowly Taurus TX 22 feels better in hand. Great firearms, thank you for the review.
I hope on day Walther will bring back the P99 AS but updated while keeping most of the same aesthetics and geometry. Maybe better grip texture, a real pic rail (maybe as a steel component separate from the frame like the Zev Tech OZ9), improved magazines that can hold more rounds in the same size, fully ambidextrous controls (which some rare gen 2 P99s have already), give it tritium sights, an even better trigger, and maybe partner up with Jarvis Custom for some hand-fitted barrels with a premium PVD finish. Oh, and of course, have the gun rated for +P+.
Man I love the Walther P99 and all the pistols that Walther has released since then (as well as what Canik has been able to do). When I was a kid, I remember watching Underworld and loving how the Walther P99 shot in full auto (and I had a crush on Kate Beckinsale). I remember seeing it in the Bond movies as loving it as well. When my uncle bought home a P99, I thought it was the coolest pistol ever and by extension thought my uncle was the coolest person ever. He let me shoot his P99 and I fell in love. Up to that point I only ever shot my mom's Beretta 84 Cheetah and shooting 9mm kicked my ass. I couldn't get over how cool it felt to shoot the P99 and I also loved the trigger. The design of the P99 looked like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie and the button decocker blew my mind. Even now with all the new Walther pistols and all the modern/new pistols we have now, I could never replicate the feeling I got when I first saw and shot the P99. Also 2:28 - 2:40 was such a cool transition between all 3 pistols.
Thanks a million for this vid. Been trying to find a P99 recently and this has me seriously considering a PDP. Much appreciated for the in-depth discussion!
I just picked up a new-manufacture P99AS a couple months ago, dated 2023 production. They're calling it the final edition, but they've been trying to kill it since 2011.
One the first pistol I learned to shoot was a H&K So the paddle release has never been a problem for me in fact I ordered my PPQ with the paddle release.
*The PPQ M1 is the best semi-auto pistol in the world, and Walther hasn't come up with anything equaling, or surpassing it in ergonomics, or function.* *The HK VP9, and the SAR9 come close, but "no cigar" yet those two pistols are better than all of Walther's new entries in this class.* *I wish I would have bought three PPQ M1s, as California DOJ doesn't see me fit to own one anymore. (although I carry one to this day, since they were first introduced)* *Oh, BTW, I would love to own a P38.(what an iconic pistol, with a cool factor of 10)*
would you say getting TALON Grips for the Walther P99 is a must then? And would you recommend the rubber or granulated? Great video! Bought a P99 10 years ago and haven't really messed with it to much.
Even the PDP trigger is better, I love my P99 Gen 1, one of the most secure guns : loaded chamber indicator, cocked firing pin indicator, double action and decocker. What else ?
I have seen a wide spread in ppq triggers... Some are great and some suck. Pdp was slightly better than the average ppq but not as good as a few rare ppqs that I have used
My P99, P99c and PPQ M1 are my favorite Walthers. They all share 15, 17 and 20 rd mags. I’m not into optics on pistols and the mags for the PDP aren’t compatible which makes it not so desirable for me.
You might want to have a gunsmith check that P99 trigger. The one I had did not come all the way back like yours does. I sold it to get a PPQ Q4 TAC because of the proprietary rail and the red-dot optics ready capability. But I would say that the P99 had a trigger very similar to the PPQ, except for the AS aspect which for a self-defense and LE pistol I would say makes it better.
IKR i wish Walther would sell models with the PDP grip and PPQ slide. I'm not sold on red dots for long term self defense. The day you actually need a pistol for self defense will be the day the battery in your pistol red dot decided to give up the ghost 👻

The long trigger on the p99 killed.it for me I just can't stand long heavy triggers maybe the other two will pass thanks for the update on the video scooch
The P99 trigger is da/sa so It is different from the PPQ and PDP. I like the P99 but its not equipped with dual slide release, a better grip, or optics like the PDP's I'd like to see the PDP offer a da/sa variant.

I wish Walther kept with the stock P99/PPQ
sights over the new design for Glock compatibility.
Though I do enjoy the PPQ, if I had my choice between 1 P99 and 15 PPQ’s and PDP’s, I’m taking the P 99
Edit: actually the Walther P 99 is still in production by Walter, it’s just not in regular import. I actually asked them about this when I called about the warranty.
I'm happy to hear that. Hopefully spare parts for the P99 will be readily available for decades to come.
The PPQ m1 shares a magazine with the p99
@@edstringer1138 true.
The Canik pistols are a P99 clone, and I am not sure why anybody would choose the Canik over a Walther.
@@chrisgullett4332 Camille is cheaper maybe
I own two Walther PDP models, C 4" and FS 5", a PPQ M2 45, and a Canik TP9 DA, which to me is an improved P99. I am very pleased with all of them, being the PDP platform my favorite.
I have a gen 2.5 p99as and a tp9da. I feel like the p99 is more comfortable and has more crisp trigger over the tp9da.
@@1sabell3 For me, the Canik TP9 DA is an improved P99 AS. I looove the DA.
"which to me is an improved P99"
You can't improve perfection 😅
Caniks are nice as heck though, especiallyfor the price
@@aaroniousairlines9087 "perfection" as in Glock?! 😆
@@v.german11b "perfection" as in Glock took the industry by storm so Walther responded with their own sorta similar thing and are now replacing it with something more Glock-like. Oh wait....
Own a ppq Navy and just ordered a pdp 5in full size in green.
Thank you and your family for your time and effort.
Wow I was literally debating which Walther I should pick up, thanks so much for the extra input Sootch!
Hope it helps! Thanks Buddy
My favorite polymer handgun series
Sootch I,m VERY disappointed Walther discontinued the p99!!!
Not at all. Canik makes them and has improve on them with their TP9 line.
They actually did not discontinue the P99. I talked to Walter, and they just put it in limited importation
P99 is a classic pistol akin to the PPKs.
@@jbloun911 and both are still in production today. Used to own a ppks. Regret selling it to be honest
I have the PPQ in the 5” ported model. Love it, still my favorite pistol.
I bought a P99AS when a batch became available a few years back. Cool pistol. Wouldn't have sold it if I had known it was going to be discontinued!
I love all of mine I have the Q in both 9mm & .45 acp love em. I wish PDP came with euro mag release. Like my P99 AS.
I love my gen 1 p99 I’m glad I picked this up when the opportunity came along !! I plan on passing this down to my son once he’s older , great family air lume I say
A friend of mine has a P99 AS and he likes it alot too. He said he ain't never selling it.
The P99 gen 1 was my first pistol. I wish I still had it. Sell it was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made.
Just ordered the PDP Pro SD. Can’t wait… PPQ is my favorite pistol at this point.
I was researching what the difference was between these last night. Awesome to see the video.
Thanks Julian
Did you get a P99?
The Canik TP9DA is derived from the P99, it's pretty good and can generally be found for $325-375.
Actually the P 99 is still in production, it’s just a limited invitation to the United States
@Kevin Allies I highly disagree. The AS trigger is fantastic. Even better then my dads beretta
@Kevin Allies I stuck a Glock striker spring in mine and the SA pull was like 3 lbs and DA maybe 6. When I started carrying it I put the old spring back as I was concerned about light strikes, but it's still a great trigger.
@@warrenrhinerson6373 I believe that the DA's trigger is based on the AS version, it operates exactly like the AS anyway.
I checked out gun deals and there are a bunch of places that have it in stock, around $650. If they made an optics ready version I'd buy one.
As a detective in Royal Malaysia Police, we still use Walther P99 👍
The P99 he purchased for this video is the original model, the one that James Bond uses. The newer models have more slide seriations and are also about $400-$500 cheaper.
How much is the original one worth?
The outtakes are hilariously relatable. 👍
PPQ lives on as the WMP and Q4 Steel frame
Thanks a million for this vid. Been trying to find a P99 recently and this has me seriously considering a PDP. Much appreciated for the in-depth discussion!
P99 is the most beautiful
I just picked up a new-manufacture P99AS a couple months ago, dated 2023 production.
They're calling it the final edition, but they've been trying to kill it since 2011.
One the first pistol I learned to shoot was a H&K So the paddle release has never been a problem for me in fact I ordered my PPQ with the paddle release.
The paddle on the PPQ m1 allows it to use P99 mags
Love my 9mm PPQ with euro paddle!
Love my Gen2 P99. Excellent firearm.
Happy birthday America
Amazing timing Sir. I was just needed a little help choosing one.
Every employee at Hi Point should have to watch this. These are proper handguns.
Than again, you’re not paying $180-$230 for a Walther
*The PPQ M1 is the best semi-auto pistol in the world, and Walther hasn't come up with anything equaling, or surpassing it in ergonomics, or function.*
*The HK VP9, and the SAR9 come close, but "no cigar" yet those two pistols are better than all of Walther's new entries in this class.*
*I wish I would have bought three PPQ M1s, as California DOJ doesn't see me fit to own one anymore. (although I carry one to this day, since they were first introduced)*
*Oh, BTW, I would love to own a P38.(what an iconic pistol, with a cool factor of 10)*
would you say getting TALON Grips for the Walther P99 is a must then? And would you recommend the rubber or granulated? Great video! Bought a P99 10 years ago and haven't really messed with it to much.
Just bought my 2md ppq in 9mm, excellent weapon.
Beautiful design gun, craftmanship.
Even the PDP trigger is better, I love my P99 Gen 1, one of the most secure guns : loaded chamber indicator, cocked firing pin indicator, double action and decocker. What else ?
I have seen a wide spread in ppq triggers... Some are great and some suck. Pdp was slightly better than the average ppq but not as good as a few rare ppqs that I have used
Have the P99AS, PPQ and I guess now it's time to buy the PDP. I love Walther handguns.
I'm really thinking about buying the PDP. Is it a good idea to trade in my PPQ M2 or just buy the PDP?
I would keep your M2.
I own one from 2016 and would never sell it. It's got some upgrades to the recoil spring, sights, and grip.
Love my PDP! Walther is such a dark horse here in the Midwest.
My P99, P99c and PPQ M1 are my favorite Walthers. They all share 15, 17 and 20 rd mags. I’m not into optics on pistols and the mags for the PDP aren’t compatible which makes it not so desirable for me.
The p99 is so unique, I want it. Too bad I live in CA and probably won’t be able to own it. I really like the look of the PPQ.
PDP is the best, the best STOCK striker-fired handgun under $700. Absolutely the best.
IMO, they are a level lower in looks to a CZ and a Sig handgun.
Great illustration of the design evolution through the years. Please do the same for Beretta and Sig Sauer 😎
Greeting from Brazil, this channel is amazing, i wish my had more liberties to buy guns like you Americans can.
what a great video - thank you for making this. first time visitor so i need to check out the rest of your vids!
I was just looking at the Walther for a new CCG. Sootch is reading my mind.
Great minds think alike : ) Thanks Justin
I EDC a PDP with a Holosun 507C on it, every day at work! Great video Don!
Question: Do you think the P99 shoots flatter because of a lower bore axis? It seems to sit lower in your grip.
Definitely. The lower bore axis makes a world of difference. Thanks Allen
Why is the PPQ slide on the PDP frame the best looking pistol I’ve ever seen?
IKR
i wish Walther would sell models with the PDP grip and PPQ slide.
I'm not sold on red dots for long term self defense.
The day you actually need a pistol for self defense will be the day the battery in your pistol red dot decided to give up the ghost 👻
Love all 3 but favorite is Ppq for looks n feel
Hi Sootch, I hope you can get ahold of the PDP Pro when that comes out and film and update against the standard model & something like the Q5 (non-steel frame) version - It would be a great series
I gott a p99 and when I shoot rapid for target acquisition, it ,s point of impact is about an inch low , a .40 caliber is a little bit slow and Itis my favorite for every day carry.
Big fan of the P38, P99, and PPQ here. Have not quite warmed up to the PDP yet.
Have three P38's, a Gen 1 P99, and a PPQ. Not sure I'll go for a PDP. The looks of the PDP Slide serrations are a bit off putting.
The long trigger on the p99 killed.it for me I just can't stand long heavy triggers maybe the other two will pass thanks for the update on the video scooch
P99_AS_C_9mm is my favorite striker fire pistol .
Proud owner of the P99 AS. I'd love to eventually get the PDP!
The P99 trigger is da/sa so It is different from the PPQ and PDP.
I like the P99 but its not equipped with dual slide release, a better grip, or optics like the PDP's
I'd like to see the PDP offer a da/sa variant.
Ready for the pocket double stack 9 from Walther.
