The P99 is a masterpiece. A da/sa striker fired with decocker. An anti stress mode that's kind of LEM ish. Massive mag release paddles. Nice recoil impulse. Great trigger. The only 2 things i didn't care for about it was after i got into red dots, that was pretty much out of the question. And the cost of magazines. At the time, they were scarce online, and local shops were asking non vital organ prices. Still, i miss mine. But not enough to go and grab the final edition and either shoot the snot out of it, or leave it unfired in the interest of collectability even though it's probably not that rare. Great video man. FyI. Ppq M1 mags work in P99. Well at least in 40sw. You should try it. I was pleasantly surprised since i couldnt fing 12rn 40 mags i got a boat load of ppq 40 mags i didnt have to source em for p99
The P99 is an iconic gun for me, specifically because it was the gun of my first bond movie and as a kid growing up in the early 2000s surrounded by airsoft guns, there were so many p99s out there. I really wish that Walther would incorporate some of the features of the P99 into their modern guns, even if they want it to just still give us the anti-stress option versus only making polymer striker guns that are basically the same as everybody else's
Man, you are preaching to the choir-my choir, anyway. I’d love to see the P99 / AS system pulled forward to the PDP platform, etc. Or better yet… the Q4SF. Steel frame with DA/SA… yes, please. @@ohnoitsandrew9538 Thanks, dude! I really appreciate that--and that's kinda my goal: the interesting guns you don't readily find info on. You know, I had a RAMI actually. And I had a PCR. While both seemed reliable with factory ammo... I found that both were less tolerant of the reman that all my other pistols would run, without issue. Both were tack drivers (especially the RAMI). But, at the end of the day, I felt more confident with Sigs, Berettas, Smiths and Walthers. The P224 would be an interesting one. I remember handling one back when they were still being made. Kinda neat... but a little awkward. If I ever see one at a steal.... might grab one. Thanks again!
P99 is the ultimate polymer 9mm pistol. I’ve cc’d mine for many years. My preferred model is my 1st gen in 357Sig. Outstanding weapon in every way IMHO. Nice overview. Glad you didn’t fall into the rabbit hole of saying the P99 has been discontinued- as you said it’s still being produced. Thanks.

@@HipsterTactical Those of us on the Walther Forum had one of the barrel makers produce about 25 P99 barrels in 357Sig. They work in P99s originally sold in 40SW. I happen to be fortunate enough to have 4 P99s - 9mm, 40SW, 357Sig, and a P99c in 9mm. My favorite striker weapon of all time. Have a great day!

Does your p99 have the molding marks that look like cracks on the front of the dust cover and on the left side I just bought a 1998 interarms gen 1 that has these marks I’ve seen a few other p99s that have the same exact marks as mine I’m trying to figure out if they are really cracks or if they are imperfections in the polymer any info would be greatly appreciated

Nice! I've often thought grabbing one of the SW99s--especially one in .45. I had a PPQ in .45. Amazing gun. But... trigger was too light for me without a safety. The SW99 gives you the decocker... which is awesome. Thanks for the comment!

Awesome review! I'm a huge fan of Walther firearms. The P99 is one of the best polymer pistol we seen. Many innovative features. I have two from 1998. One has over 14k rounds through it and the other is an unfired one for collection. Definitely enjoy shooting the P99. Ashame that Walther discontinued it.

The lack of a hammer on these to know what state it was in always kind of bothered me. Then when I realized that the trigger could be forward, with the gun still in "sort of single action" mode, I couldn't get over it. That said it has the looks and a lot of features that are so classic for the time when I first started getting interested in guns, and I definitely see the collector appeal.
Yeah, I don’t really care for the AS mode, per se (the cocked and trigger forward mode). But I find the striker indicator to be a good substitute for the hammer. Plus… that push-button decocker is just great. Thanks for the comment!
There’s a peep hole on the back of the slide which shows the striker (and there’s a red dot at the end of the striker to make it visually jump out at you). So in true double action mode, the striker is forward and you’d just see an empty hole, and you’d only see the red dot at the end of striker protruding when cocked. Meanwhile, the “sort of single action” mode is similar to the famous HK LEM trigger. The idea for both is that the added weight of a true double action trigger makes it difficult to shoot accurately, not to mention you’d have to learn two separate trigger pulls. So the action is pre-cocked while the trigger is still left in the long position so you’d get the travel distance of a double action trigger but not the weight. You’d have a little less safety, but still much more margin of error than just a normal striker pistol. The P99 trigger does make a small click when you pull the trigger from double action position to single action position, thus also giving you an audible and tactical feedback if something snags on the trigger during, say, reholstering. It’s a really well thought out trigger design, but unfortunately flew over people’s heads and now Walther themselves deleted it for the PPQ and PDP, which sucks.
@@gameragodzilla I get all of that, but the back of the striker in the little hole is not nearly as obvious or easy to feel as a hammer, especially if you're wearing gloves. The AS is like an LEM except with the detent that holds the trigger once you begin to press it, but the LEM has the advantage that in normal use it's always in that mode. In practice you can basically pretend the LEM is a very light DAO, and not have to think about it. Carrying the gun in AS mode is what I think Walther originally envisioned, as otherwise you only get that mode after a reload. But, then you need the two steps (decock, then slightly retract slide to cock the striker) to get back into AS mode after you've been shooting. In contrast, an LEM is already in the "AS" mode as soon as you release the trigger.
Had a PPQ for awhile, put about 5-6k rounds through it. It was the best shooting SFA pistol on the market IMO, but for a carry gun the trigger has potential issues that the P99 does not when carried decocked. I did know you could essentially decock a PPQ by nudging the slide back and easing down the trigger… but, as you said, you’re left with a gun that can’t fire in that state. The 99 is a hell of a gun-and I tend to agree that it was, and always shall be, the most complete, most effective iteration of the modern Walther SFA platform. The AS da/sa system is the striker-fired version of HK’s LEM hammer-fired system. Both require the would-be purchaser to be intelligent enough to understand the advantage.
Well, the I'd say the LEM system a little different--the action is cocked, but the trigger shoe doesn't snick back to SA position on the LEM... whereas it does on the AS system. Also, of course, you can decock the AS, whereas you can't on the LEM. I had a P2000SK in LEM. Meh. Much prefer the AS DA/SA system. Thanks!
Great story ✌️ You miss Vonder Nine HK VP70Z -18 round capacity - it was dope in early 70's. Love/hate mine. Neat reference to the Olympic pistol grip designer - all pistols should follow that target profile - except the trend is for packing thin pistols in yer underpants. Sad. Very nostalgic for the 1st Gen. P99 because of the Bond films it appeared in. This'll be the fourth time I've said this on UA-cam, but I'd love to see Bond use a 1st Gen. P99 but with a CCP M2+ style slide, accessory rail and trigger guard for a Streamlight TLR7A and a PDP Compact style trigger, mag release and grip when he needs a full size pistol.

I've seen a lot of conflicting information on whether or not Walther makes the P22 in Ulm. I've seen examples with the Ulm proof marks as well as ones with the Arnsberg (aka the Umarex factory location) proof marks.
That's interesting. Yeah, like so many things with gun manufacture... it's probably not set in stone. Still, I tend to think--from a design standpoint--there are the "Ulm-origin" guns and the "Umarex-origin" guns. But... that's a perception, based on conjecture. Which, at some level... Yup. The Canik TP-9 guns are basically P99 clones. Canik even reproduced the P99’s decocking system almost exactly, from what I’ve heard. Canik now has their “Mete” line of guns which, I think, are more PPQish… as in, they don’t have the P99-style decockers. No experience with Canik, but I’ve heard they’re solid, dependable pistols. I haven't had that issue, myself. But there is a thread on covering someone else's experience with this issue on the Walther forum. I read through it, and the consensus was that ordering a new trigger pin was the best solution. I'm thinking you can probably find one on Numrich. Good luck! Love walthers but that being said love glock hk sigs. Just funny how fanboys always gotta take shots at glock. My point is that--objectively speaking--a Walther P99 will shoot to point of aim more intuitively than a comparable Glock. Among those who've experienced both platforms, I don't think you'd find too many people who'd disagree with that. But if you do... that's fine. We'll agree to disagree.

I enjoy your content very much. I agree on the hump helping to lock the gun in. To a degree, the grip angle on glocks does the same for me.

The AS da/sa system is the striker-fired version of HK’s LEM hammer-fired system. Both require the would-be purchaser to be intelligent enough to understand the advantage.
Well, the I'd say the LEM system a little different--the action is cocked, but the trigger shoe doesn't snick back to SA position on the LEM... whereas it does on the AS system. Also, of course, you can decock the AS, whereas you can't on the LEM. I had a P2000SK in LEM. Meh. Much prefer the AS DA/SA system. Thanks!

You miss Vonder Nine HK VP70Z -18 round capacity - it was dope in early 70's. Love/hate mine. Neat reference to the Olympic pistol grip designer - all pistols should follow that target profile - except the trend is for packing thin pistols in yer underpants. Sad.

Battlestar Galactica looks. Staple gun trigger. Hell yes. Honestly, the DA trigger on my HK P9S feels about how I imagine the VP70's trigger feels. And I actually shoot pretty well with it. Go figure.
Very nostalgic for the 1st Gen. P99 because of the Bond films it appeared in. This'll be the fourth time I've said this on UA-cam, but I'd love to see Bond use a 1st Gen. P99 but with a CCP M2+ style slide, accessory rail and trigger guard for a Streamlight TLR7A and a PDP Compact style trigger, mag release and grip when he needs a full size pistol.

I've seen a lot of conflicting information on whether or not Walther makes the P22 in Ulm. I've seen examples with the Ulm proof marks as well as ones with the Arnsberg (aka the Umarex factory location) proof marks.
That's interesting. Yeah, like so many things with gun manufacture... it's probably not set in stone. Still, I tend to think--from a design standpoint--there are the "Ulm-origin" guns and the "Umarex-origin" guns. But... that's a perception, based on conjecture. Which, at some level... I suppose everything is (according to Renee Descartes). Thanks for chiming in!

You have a good assortment of the wonder nines but you collection is missing one of the greatest of them all, the CZ75. You liking a lot of a ll metal guns have to have one of them. You will like!! The P99 is a keeper. One of my favorite Striker fired guns.

The P99as was never fully embraced at the time because of the regurgitated misinformation around da/sa actions.

Yup. The Canik TP-9 guns are basically P99 clones. Canik even reproduced the P99’s decocking system almost exactly, from what I’ve heard. Canik now has their “Mete” line of guns which, I think, are more PPQish… as in, they don’t have the P99-style decockers. No experience with Canik, but I’ve heard they’re solid, dependable pistols. Do you have any advice on a walking trigger pin in a P99?
I haven't had that issue, myself. But there is a thread on covering someone else's experience with this issue on the Walther forum. I read through it, and the consensus was that ordering a new trigger pin was the best solution. I'm thinking you can probably find one on Numrich. Good luck! If I come across any more info, I'll let you know.

Love walthers but that being said love glock hk sigs. Just funny how fanboys always gotta take shots at glock. You dont belive gaston talked about making g19 shootable but you do believe walther did talk about making guns shootable. That is stupid. If you cant shoot g19 its you and only you. Its the most popular handgun. But everybody is wrong huh? Thats funny just like what you like and you dont have to pooh on anything else. Glock hasnt changed much in almost 40 years. And ALL other polymers are pretty much copies albeit improved copies.
My point is that--objectively speaking--a Walther P99 will shoot to point of aim more intuitively than a comparable Glock. Among those who've experienced both platforms, I don't think you'd find too many people who'd disagree with that. But if you do... that's fine. We'll agree to disagree.
