Hypnagogic Archive's plot solidifies in some of the text documents- make sure to read oxide of the void and the crowning gem of the work - 'the persecuted accountants' which is honestly one of the best pieces of creative writing ive ever read. even if you dont do another analysis- trust me, its worth it
As someone who's enjoyed your content since 2017, I can say that your analysis is virtually unparalleled here on UA-cam, and I respect it immensely. The lengths you go to and the parallels you draw are not only interesting, but your visual style is one-of-a-kind and iconic. I also enjoy the original compositions you include. This analysis is very spot-on- aside from misgendering Opal, I found myself nodding in agreement at all the points that were made here. I think the Hypnagogic Archive definitely lends itself to a lot of analysis and speculation, as it's chock full of themes and ideas, and I do think making a follow-up to this video could be very interesting, as there is a lot more content to cover. You should maybe mention the stories "Joyce," "Oxide Of The Void," or "Don't Look Up At The Fan," they're particularly fun. The stories aren't meant to be read in the order they're listed on the website- they're just listed alphabetically, as are the videos. Also, if you'd be interested in having me on an episode of Nightmare Tonight for an intriguing discussion, I'd be up for that. My e-mail is listed on my about page.
I always appreciate your sidebars and bookends. Lots of essayists discuss how they put together videos or how they connected pieces to derive themes, but I've never seen someone so succinctly and relatably break down the process of how they determine what analytical tactics to use. You've definitely helped me think about how I apreciate art and made me a better media analyst.
i love leaving comments on old ass youtube essays because its like i'm visiting from the FUTURE a) KoTH owns and it's what i watch when i'm sick for home b) the fact that there's this developing, almost, like... syncretism of informed critical theory for even the most... esoteric pop culture is really fascinating to me -- as an old person who's been banging the "universities need to acknowledge the outside world in a deeper setting than 'token'" and getting shut out -- and (this is gonna sound like i'm blowing smoke up your ass, but i'm sort of serious) in my estimation you're well on your way to becoming an adorno or even (god forbid, lol) a zizek. on behalf of those of us who commingle the lurid with the divine in service of transmitting knowledge, broadening the spectrum of the possible, and nurturing the curiosity other people, thanks c) (this is my professor shit speaking feel free to ignore) it is sometimes okay to close your thesaurus :/ d) the hypnagogic archive is cool and good and while i am an avid fan of AH and related ephemera i appreciate that it doesn't take itself so goddamned seriously
So excited to see you cover this! I've watched other UA-camrs cover it but I love your method of analysis so I can't wait to see what you think about it.
Yea there is no science for dream interpretation. Its more a social thing. The values, themes and beliefs of your culture plays a major role in what your dreams are and thus what they mean
Right, but tautologically, one inside of someone else’s culture could, in fact, interpret a dream, yes? Or are an individual’s fantasy so individual that no one person could have insight into someone else’s fantasy, thereby ultimately nullifying the ability for anyone to assume any one thought that another person would have? Genuine question.
@@mattparsons946 Well, dreams are your brain processing information you took in during the day. And our cultures are just a guideline for how you, aka your brain, will make you dream. And its a guideline. Its mainly based on your situation, the reason why you dreamt what you did and your emotions tied to that. Oh and the media you consume. Because our brains had to process that too.
@@mattparsons946 tldr: Yes but also no. Culture is a basic guideline, but everything is a person specific thing. We can get a base idea, but we will never truly fully grasp what the other person dreamt, because we arent them.
Interpreting dreams actually isn't that hard. What most people do wrong is A) being too literal-minded about it and B) expecting the answer to be more profound than it actually is. Dreaming is essentially us thinking about stuff while we sleep, but since we're not conscious the thought process tends to become highly abstract and symbolic. Whatever you see in your dream is sort of irrelevant, what you should be focusing on is what it makes you feel and how that associates to your feelings in real life. I usually have a pretty good idea of what my dreams mean, since I'm a pretty introspective person who is used to thinking about symbolism and thematic stuff. Usually it's not very interesting: It's much the same stuff I think and worry about normally, only scrambled into a sort of emotional rebus by my subconscious.
I always hate it when people say "it's not that deep", like what the fuck does that even mean? That the author didn't intend for us to take these messages? All of the art we create says so much about us in ways we never intended, doing a deep dive or an analysis of a work is not about revealing intent, but rather understanding what we took from it.
Love you Dave, but I want to give you a brief, hopefully productive criticism here - lately, in those analysis videos, I feel like you’re always on the verge of clicking in a larger profound point, but that’s where the video ends. This is also underscored by your closing thoughts on “justifying” an analysis. So in this respect, your critique of how nostalgia functions and how this particular arc/story might relate to it, leaves out the most poignant connections, for example the story with the stuffed zombie bird (what’s a taxidermized creature, ontologically? Something that pretends to be alive? What does it mean when it comes back?) and the stories about the haunted rest stop (what do ghosts mean? How does a rest stop relate to the internet websites?). I feel like you should follow this up…
You know what you were saying about the clean water running out and everything? Not to worry; it's just society collapsing. It happens to all of them. As far as the actual subject, I'm surprised I haven't heard of this. Thanks for the belated (quasi) nostalgia! John Kerry: He showed up.

Carbon offsets are a scam.

hmm, that rings a bell but I have not familiarized myself with it

In a sense this is almost the exact opposite of it

Very interesting deep dive and I like the new format as well. Happy to see you sponsored!
This video is sponsored.
Does anyone know what the track is called in the background at 1:56? It used to be on his soundcloud but it isn't anymore.
Isn't it just the normal Nightmare Masterclass intro music?

I really appreciate the in-depth analysis of the subjects you choose in your videos. 😊
Can I say, I honestly would love a KotH analysis from you. Class, politics, character, etc.; all your thoughts would be very much appreciated
46:00 the "it's not deep bro" crowd still exists in 2022. why.
Hey! The new DHMIS show is out! Imo the first episode is worthy of some analysis if not the whole series!
I would love to see his interpretation of DHMIS ❤

who TF says its narcissistic to discuss dreams???
We all know nostalgia is toxic and dangerous
That it poisons the heart smothers and enslaves us
This ARG is inconscient and tbh pure trash.
What's "inconscient?" Is it like a cross between inconsistent and unconscious?
