    "I think art is necessarily an abstract reflection on the society in which it was created"
    "... and to think you are above it (social programming) is only to immerse yourself further in delusion."
    You just gained yourself a sub. I find it tragically rare for people to realize this.

      xdearlifex It's a difficult thing to realize. And it's one thing to acknowledge it in an intellectual sort of way. It's quite another to actually try to analyze the ways in which we're socially conditioned. Difficult indeed.

    I'm the guy who found that hidden video that plays in the website background. When i was checking out their website and saw original video content playing in the background, knowing these guys i knew i had to check the website code. Sure enough that lead me to a youtube link.
    There was only 1 view when i went to it. I didn't know what the secret in the video was, but you could definitely something was going on.
    I just kinda posted it on Reddit as interesting and for documentation purposes to see if anyone else could get anything from it. I had no idea it was that big of a deal

      Psychology nerd here. He doesn't understand what "word salad" means either. I wish he would do basic research instead of "I'm no doctor, but it looks like human bones to me" and "This reminds me of how the internet uses the term 'word salad.' Is it too much of a stretch to diagnose the entire cult as an entity with schizophrenia?"

    i know this is an old video, but as soon as you mentioned dissociative/repressive amnesia and how it connects to the series, i was reminded of my own experience rediscovering repressed memories of past trauma. looking at The Mirror through this lens, I think they captured the disjointed feeling of it extremely well. It almost plays out like one of the members suddenly recalling their time as a child of the mirror, the memories coming in bits and pieces that don't necessarily fit together perfectly, and with a lot of time missing in-between. It can sometimes feel like it was part of an entirely different lifetime, like it wasn't entirely you on the other side of the mirror.

    The point you made about understanding art within it’s socio-cultural context really hit home for me. I used to hate Picasso’s Guernica. The visual style simply didn’t appeal to me, and so I rejected it as a political piece that looks a little strange.
    This last year I have been working on producing a project examining the Spanish Civil War and the societal impact that it had. Looking at Guernica now, knowing the absolute political upheaval and confusion of the time, the brutality of a conflict of ideologies tearing apart the lives of ordinary Spanish people.. it puts it in a completely different light. I now think the style is perfect at representing that abstract horror of a country bleeding for a reason that it doesn’t, and people still don’t, truly understand. I respect it much more.

      Nightmare Masterclass another detail that could be made is when you bring up the water jugs at 1:05:23 and just the emphasis of water in general. if somebody drinks too much water their body won't know what to do with it and they'll die. A sign of water poisoning is an excessive amount of sweat.

    For what it is worth, not that I am a medical doctor, but my experiences hearing 'word salad' have been much more bizarre and disconcerting than the speech suggested to be examples of it around 30:00. Classic 'word salad' is so intense and non-sequitur to the listener yet sensible to the speaker as to be painfully frustrating even when the listener understands that the speaker has a crippling psychiatric disorder. Further, the dialogue of Curtis appears to have an internal logic which is just out of grasp for the listener, even if we know that it probably is NOT a logic which converges with that of our reality. Oftentimes, in the worst examples of word salad, though the speaker may give off an affect of trusting in the internal logic of what they are saying, in no way does the listener get the impression of what that logic may be.
    Not disagreeing with you that this could be Curtis' exhibition of 'word salad' but that, if it is, I do not think this behavior alone is sufficient to suggest that he is in the state of advanced schizophrenia. At the same time, one need not be in an advanced version of the disease to exhibit hallucinations, delusions, or anti-social behavior.

    Just an observation I made but in the second episode about altruism, curtis ends the video by saying, "in every sandwich, there is a piece of me, but I won't say which piece." Later, in the final episode, during curtis' meltdown in front of the projector, we see curtis talking briefly about bread while he has several slices of bread sitting next to him which he eventually begins to cram into his mouth and eat. I am assuming that bread is what he was referring to in the earlier episode since it's the most obvious part of a sandwich. Clearly bread must be important in a similar way to water.From a purely physiological standpoint, it may be because bread is a very absorbent type of food and drinking a lot of water and eating bread would result in its expansion and thereby a vessel that is too full to be inhabited by tindalos.But I believe the purpose of putting it in here is far more symbolic than anything and I believe it is a religious undertone that pertains to Reese's earlier comment about a Christ allegory. Jesus refers to himself countless times in the bible as both water and bread. Jesus says in John 4:14, "but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him will become a well of water springing up into everlasting life.And then in John 6:35 for instance, "Jesus said unto them. I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."I'm not sure what to make of it yet, but it is clear to me that it is intentional.

    Idk if this has been pointed out yet, but Wesley did fail the exercise. Curtis said to walk towards him as if they were unaware of him, Wesley said hello, which is acknowledging Curtis. Fanny waited for Curtis to acknowledge her, since her being the initiator would mean she's aware he's there. I don't think this was intended to be a gaslighting tactic, but since Curtis didn't explain why Wesley failed when (most likely) Wesley and most others wouldn't be able to tell what he did differently than Fanny, he would still be left feeling confused and ashamed.

    Commenting from 12:35, something I'd like to share since I'm certain some missed it: The follower with the black hair, whomst'd've we see only in the first episode, can be seen to meekly reject the B.O.N.E.G.R.E.N.A.D.E. exercise with a slight shaking of the head, later receiving a playful taunt from Wesley and what may be a threat from Fanny, later disappearing.

    The only difference between a religion and a cult is a religion has scraped together political and social legitimacy, it can raise an army or levy influence over society and politics in a powerful way, often due to it being widespread, wealthy or having some historical pedigree.

    First off, I really enjoy your perspective of these highly interpretive works. Wham City is a cryptic lot. I did notice some presumptive interpretations, such as "this might mean..." or "you could see this as..." but you've been good about hanging a lantern on it and saying those weren't the canon ways of looking at the artwork.
    Um... tl;dr Good job.
    I'd love to poke your head some day and ask what you think about trusting authority on the subjects of how we feel reality works. (example: belief that matter is made of atoms, even though very few humans have seen the proof with their own eyes, so must have faith that others have proven it for them.) But I think this text wall is enough for now.
    Ta ta!

    • @NightmareMasterclass
      @NightmareMasterclass  8 років тому +6

      NatchEvil Thanks! It's important to one that these are indeed highly interpretive works. As such, any claim is necessarily built on at least a few presumptions. But, for me at least, that's the fun of it.
      Now, about your science question, the thing that we take on faith is that scientists are accurate in their findings. Of course, that's not always the case. That's why when you hear about a new study about whatever topic, you should take it with a grain of salt until it's been repeated. If only there were more incentive to repeat studies to verify their results, we'd all be better off. So the scientific community is not without its problems. But that doesn't in turn mean that the collective efforts of the scientific community are not meaningful. It's a process. I don't have faith that any one person, however smart they may be, has all the answers. But I trust that the process itself is sound.

    First, I want to say I love your videos and can't wait for more! Great work, sir, great work!
    I think The Mirror tackles not only cults, but almost every other organized group of people in general and how corrupted they really are. Look at the people forming The Mirror - there is Curtis, strong leader with vision and cogency, a man you don't want to oppose to. Every organization needs that kind of people, people making decisions and controling the environment around them, reacting in the blink of an eye to all the hazards that threaten the wellbeing of an organization. Reece works as an intelectual core - people like him create ideology (let's call it 'principles of operation') and are necessary to fight back the attacks of organization's enemies, both within and without the group. Fanny represents the hardcore believers - people like her will do everything leader wants them to do. They always follow him and look up to him in almost religious manner. All they need in return is to be noticed and praised (that's why Curtis puts Fanny's shoes only for her; that's her prize for being so devoted). Wesley works as an 'emotional core' of the organization - people like him are not as intelligent as 'intelectual core' and not as believing as hardcore followers, but they make up for it by creating friendly, open atmosphere around the organization. Wesley is rather an easygoing, cheerful, enthusiastic and friendly person, you like him almost instantly. He is the smokescreen covering the truth about the organization (flaws and irregularities) and its real goals. The rest of people appearing in the video are merely pawns - they're necessary only for a limited amount of time to do tasks needed to be done. And when the work is done, they're no longer needed.
    Have you noticed how each and every one of them is... I don't know... psychically (more likely psychologically) corrupted? Wesley is the clearest example - there's something wrong with him; his enthusiasm is just not right. Maybe he's mentally disabled, maybe he suffers from some kind of mental disorder. Reece appears to be a perfectionist - he put neatly folded cloths between his knees and ankles and push away that burgundy-coloured... something, because it disturbs him in his gesticulation. Fanny is rather easy to crack, you've said everything there is to say about her.
    Oh, and one more thing. I've noticed that only Fanny and Curtis have sweaty faces. I think it's because they truly believe in what they say and do. Reece has his own hidden agenda and is using The Children of The Mirror to realize his secret goal(s), he doesn't really care about the whole cult thing. Wesley doesn't believe per se, because his mental abilities aren't developed enough (but the leader likes him and that's why Fanny despises him so much). I'm not sure Wesley even understands where he really is and how dangerous the environment is for him. The look on Curtis' face when he goes with Wesley to the forest got me thinking... It's not a friendly smile - rather a grim of a predator who just caught his victim and is going to consume it ruthlessly. It's only a thought of mine, but what if Curtis... sexually abuses Wesley on a regular basis and Wesley's mental state makes it impossible to even comprehend what's going on? I'm not sure, but there is definitely something off about their relationship...
    I didn't want to go into too much details, but I'm sure you've got my point - not only cults works in that way. Corporations, political parties, Nazis are another examples. People are corrupted creatures and whatever they create is automatically contaminated by that corruption.
    I hope this comment is not too long and I didn't make too many mistakes (English is not my native language). That being said, keep up with amazing work! Can't wait for your next video! Stay well!

      doxepine Wow! Thanks for that thoughtful, detailed comment. Don't worry, your English is quite good for a non native speaker.
      I think a lot of what you're saying is on target, especially in reference to the various functions these people serve in the group--and the thematic implications of that.

    Here's a different reading, which you still might like: what if Reece happens to be the actual prophet, unknowingly - and Curtis is basically like a leech, drawing from Reece's prophecy but mixing it with his own philosophies... and ultimately fails?

    Thank you for making this; it is genuinely quite interesting. I was not aware of the meaning of the 'backround' video and the 'Thiaoouba' cult.
    One thing that still bothers me is that these videos are what the cult wants the world to see (since they are propaganda videos). Therefore, the cult members could have themselves added the "reddening" effect and the distortion effects in post-production on Curtis's and Fanny's faces to make their cult look more realistic. This also opens up the question of who is actually controlling the camera and doing the filming, especially in the outdoors scenes where we see all the cult members in front of the camera.

    • @NightmareMasterclass
      @NightmareMasterclass  8 років тому +14

      zack zack That's a valid point. There is a veil of ambiguity to this whole work. We can't know for sure. As I point out in the video, these "lessons" are all constructions. It is true that the purpose of the videos is to spread their ideology. In that regard, it's propaganda. But think of all the real world examples where propaganda has served to undermine the very cause it was made to perpetuate. To the outsider, the elaborate choreographed movements of the young girls in North Korea seem absurd. Or take the Heaven's Gate videos as an example. To those already indoctrinated in the cult, the views expressed in those videos are entirely reasonable. But to the outsider, their testamonials are just sad and weird. So yes, the lessons are constructions. But the characters unwittingly give a number of signs that all is not right in their world. But what would be the incentive to manipulate the videos to make Curtis look red faced for a few frames here and there? It doesn't work to lend any legitimacy to their cause in my view. Anyway, just some thoughts. Thank you for your feedback!

    • @renegamino3122
      @renegamino3122 7 років тому +4

      Late comment but similar to satire which may operate on the basis of irony - a disconnect between what is said, what is shown or two distinct voices present in the work - the videos may operate on a disconnect, be it conceptually such as in the altruism section or the distinction between the propagandists and the studio. Furthermore, because of the thematic significance of perception, the distortion effect is no more a part of the universe than the glass of water; that reality is being shaped by their beliefs.

    My interpretation of the scene where Curtis praises Fanny but rebukes Wesley was that he was illustrating how one might respond when the children of the mirror share their beliefs with others. But I like your interpretation too. In yours, maybe it’s relevant that Wesley did not raise his hand to greet Curtis, while Fanny did? Curtis’s response is still insanely overboard, but hands are very important to the group.
    I also find it odd that no one in the group wears pants besides Curtis. They probably have shorts on or something, but their legs are very exposed compared to his. I’m guessing it’s not a personal choice.

    Absolutely marvelous video! Although I don't agree with all your points, you put them forth in a very intelligent and well-composed manner that I can see your perspective perfectly. I especially appreciated the addition of "Lynch-ian" as a concept as I often feel that people often try too hard to see bizarre universes, like Wham City's universes, according to the rules of our own. For example, seeing Curtis's self in the window could be interpreted as some eldritch event, but to me, that's the same as interpreting Enemy (2013) as a movie about a spider alien invasion. Your way of looking at it appears much more likely according to the laws set forth in Wham City's other works and even in AlanTutorial.
    Listening to this video was a fantastic experience and I sincerely hope you continue this channel.
    Have a wonderful day.

    Great analysis! my only real critique is that you didn't mention a small thing Reece mentions in his time out secession. He mentions that he was in a band but that it was made up as only him and that "we decided to create a play" this seems to indicate that he was having a similar situation involving a doppelganger or at least hint to what was to come. keep up the good work

    Had to stop this video to watch the series.
    I think one of the most disturbing things about the series is the implication that Curtus is right. Through his idiotic, inane, abusive, and psychotic ramblings and habits he has actually stumbled into some kind of eldritch truth. We see several indications of this in the series, most notably the ending when he runs into a copy of himself, the incident with the corner (it is literally the shit of something beyond understanding), the bone grenades, and the video distortions.
    The series is essentially showing how an already crazy person struggles to cope with cosmic horror.
    Of course, the most disturbing element of the series is that "normal" everyday people are capable of being indoctrinated into a cult. By the fourth video we see that Reece and Wesley are having reservations and by the fifth Fanny wants out too. Unfortunately they're trapped, even though they can physically walk away at any time.

  • @wetmilk7275
    @wetmilk7275 7 років тому

    it's a bit jarring that Curtis himself would kill his "disciples," with his own bare hands. I think what you suggested, that Curtis forced the disciples to kill themselves, is more likely. I think he may have forced them to drown themselves, and then tried to cleanse himself through whatever ritual he has for that. I think the jugs are filled with water, but in reference to what homicidal things Curtis did and influenced, it could be called a sort of metaphorical poison. I think the true sadness was what happened to the disciples, whether simply murdered or forced to kill themselves.

    • @ikemoon127
      @ikemoon127 7 років тому

      Nightmare Masterclass
      Okay. I should probably elaborate on what I mean.
      Persuasion, in my definition, is influencing another person's decisions through the use of arguments, be they based on rationality, emotion, or a combination of the two.
      Coercion, on the other hand, is presenting an undesired consequence in the event that they refuse your offer, specifically a consequence they would not have otherwise had to endure.
      If one resorts to coercion, it is typically because they couldn't use any arguments to influence you and your decisions. The fine line between coercion and persuasion exists in the form of fraud. One uses persuasion to influence another's decision, but they do so using false information, essentially getting you to commit to a decision you would not have consented to if you had all of the available information. Is trickery a form of coercion in your opinion?

    • @NightmareMasterclass
      @NightmareMasterclass  7 років тому +2

      Salvage Edith If there's an explicit or implied threat, yes. But nonetheless, the two are not mutually exclusive. If you look into the Jonestown incident, you'll see that it gradually became a more coercive situation.

  • @loudsqueal2896
    @loudsqueal2896 7 років тому +2

    Curtis is not of this world.
    He said in the second episode that his "old old self" could not be described by a language humans could hear. He wants his followers to cover up the corners that he calls "tindalos doorways." He is running from something near the end, which we find out is supposed to be a clone of himself. Or is it?
    I suspect Curtis escaped from some kind of alternate reality, and has enlightened his followers with his own culture, combined with some random shit he made up involving water. His "followers" are serving as his pawns, just to make it so he doesn't have to go back. Whatever is looking for him is also from this alternate world, and wants him back. And perhaps the form of Curtis we see is just the form all of Curtis' race takes when they enter the mortal world.
    Long story short, Curtis must be an otherworldly being tricking humans into doing silly things, which keeps his race from finding him and returning him to his homeworld.
    In the episode "Cleanliness 2", Curtis' frantic freakout comes from the children starting to pick up on his otherworldly identity, and starting to refuse to listen to his advice. As a result of this, Curtis begins to lose control of his human form, which results in awkward flailing, threatening gestures, facial spasms, and some kind of radiation effect that damages the camera, similar to Slenderman. The attack caused by the children's neglect has left one of his meat shields dead, and he is quickly losing control, which leads to him either having to kill all three of the children, or the remaining three children leaving Curtis' care, realizing his true identity.
    In the final episode, Curtis' pursuers abruptly stop his one-man production, which has deteriorated over the course of the show's lifespan due to the members one by one leaving the show. Curtis is all alone, meaning there's nobody keeping him away from his pursuers. Finally, they manage to find him beneath a sheet of plastic and give chase. He runs as fast as he can until he is ran directly into a trap by his captors, who then whisk him away back to his homeworld. The empty seat shots at the end further support this; the nightmare is over. Curtis is gone, and so is the "truth".

    Its called ' The Children Of The Mirror - Not ' The Mirror -
    Also I think your voice and all the audio could be a bit louder. Also at the beginning you do have an intro but you kind of just go straight into analysis without outlining the show or concept at all. Would be cool if you analysed some content that Night Mind hasn't already done. I'm not saying don't tackle the same content. I'm just saying it will really help you out to have analysis of different content than Night Mind. Also I'm not sure if you chose your name before or after you heard of Night Mind. But it just feels a tiny bit cheap that you also have the word Night at the beginning of your youtube name. Bless you for tackling this type of content though.

      Thanks for the feedback! Check out my latest video about the film The Neon Demon. I think the audio mix improved in that one. Still trying to get a good balance between the music and voice over. As far as future content goes, I have some interesting stuff in the works. And I think it will be somewhat distinct from what Night Mind normally does. For instance, I don't have much of an interest in ARGs like EverymanHybrid, etc. So, there will be some overlap, insofar as I'm extremely interested in Wham City stuff. As far as the name goes, I initially thought of it as kind of a play on Masterpiece Theater. But yeah, I realize the similarity, but there's not much I can do about that at this point. I think our styles are distinct enough to not really be concerned about that.

      DawntreaderUK I'd also just like to point out that my video came out over a month before Nick put his (very well made) video on the same topic out. Not that it really matters, because I'm not going to pick and choose what topics I cover based on another youtubers choices. And I'd never expect any other youtuber to do that either. I cover material that I'm interested in. But, having said that, even if I agreed with the premise of your criticism (I don't at all), it still would have been logistically impossible in this instance, unless you know of a way to travel back in time. These are some pretty ridiculous standards you're trying to impose on me.
