The thing I find most interesting about The Monument Mythos is that the horrific creatures are not necessarily evil. They are mostly just trying to survive on their own but humanity tries to exploit them or stop them through various means which creates most of the tragedies seen in the series. One example of this is how the Lincoln Lookers exist solely to keep watch on the tree of liberty in the Washington Monument. Another example is how Rockefeller moved the tree into Rockefeller plaza which resulted in the Rockefeller Tree Tragedy. Additionally, it is the disregard for safety standards along with rampant greed that caused the tragedy of the Suez Canal Crab. How funny that in a world full of horrors beyond our comprehension, humans are the true villains.
This kinda thing is why I don’t think James Dean is Satan. After all, he was the one who semicorrectly (although depressingly) classified humanity as a TFMD. I don’t think he’s a good guy- not in the least- but Satan? Nah.
The events of SUEZCANALCRAB seem to bear out this notion. The Crab was totally chilling without a care and it was human actions that led to its death and the deaths of thousands of people.
I always enjoy listening to someone's take on the Monument Mythos. There is so little of it around and I feel like the series is a deep wellspring of ideas. While I don't personally see eye to eye with you on all of your points, I really enjoyed listening to your argument and it gave me a new perspective on the series. The fact that some fans of the series still support James Dean and some are wholly behind the ADA speaks to the richness of the way the universe was crafted. Having thought through the series myself, I find that neither side is in the right. The literal angel of vengeance wipes out the ADA for trying to control the world with terroristic force! Similarly, the horrific order of the government is feeding people to the woodchipper. I find it particularly ironic that the government is controlling "Freedom" to do it's dirty work. Anyway, this video gave me a lot to think about and I really enjoyed it!
i really appreciate the analysis focus you take in your videos about args. oftentimes with other yters who cover similar topics, it feels more like i'm watching a summary with some light analysis thrown in at the end rather than a discussion of the work itself, so it's really satisfying to hear someone's take on the themes and intent of the work (no shade to those creators, but oftentimes what i want is an analysis and what i get is a recap :/). great stuff!!!
I’m half way through season two and almost blew my load coming back here to watch your video only after watching the series part of the way … not yet Mr. 2:23 … not yet. I’ll be back.
8:27 Perhaps the liberty lurker is a metaphor for the widespread xenophobia in the US throughout it's history. As though the country is outwardly open to the meek and poor and the huddled masses, below that shiny exterior is a beast that must, and will, literally eat them alive to sustain itself.
my read on lincolnlookers was that they weren’t put in place to emulate or summon any entities, but that their function was to continually observe the washington monument (known to house one of the special trees)
I stopped watching the news because for a long while it would cause me to be horrifically anxious, like, literally shaking and crying because the world felt like it was ending. I didn't know that the suez canal was blocked until i watched suezcanalcrab. I showed it to a pal and they went "i kinda wish that happened instead" Edit: I literally stared there, jaw on the floor as they explained that the boat had dildos on it
The world isn't ending. But see it this way, would people watch the news if all the would broadcast is panda babies being born. I'd say no. So it's only logical that news agencies only show you the worst stuff or viewers loose interest creating this warped perception that the entire world is out to get you. But that's wrong. Only the Star Beast is out to get you.
I’m so glad you did this! Excellent points! Wendigoon did a 3 hour DEEEEEEP dive into it, which is amazing also. He did a timeline or well multiple timelines because of the nature of the series, and it was great. I like that you touched on points he did not and vice versa. You have a more intellectual approach and his was more breaking down every video, timelines, characters, etc. either way, thank you for helping me get through my work day!
I was so excited to see this pop up! Been a long time favorite youtuber and I am very please to see your dive into the analog horror genre. I am also glad you brought up a more serious ideological analysis regarding the overall narrative for this serious!
The odd thing about the series is there are things that were never really answered. If Washington (now a Lovecraftian creature) was apparently Still president after returning as the "horned serpent" but how? He grew into a creature that appears to have merged John carpenter thing like with seemingly millions of others also trapped by random encounters with the "trees" so how did Washington rule?? Did he still have the ability of audible human speech. Did all of the other people merged with him just agree that Washington would speak for all of them?? Or did a gestalt consciousness believe it was solely Washington now? It appears that every other president after Washington's return is just a puppet leader just a public face while Washington gives the actual orders. Did he meet other government officials in actual physical meetings? Did the horned serpent sign important documents? Also while the Lincolnlooker story is told as fabricated yet there is a seemingly authentic video of some creature that was crawling out of the back of the statue. And finally there is the odd mystery of his first video on the house on the ocean was taken down as apparently he received a mysterious message from the government that the footage he used was from a actual investigation of some similar events. But both explanations make no sense. If the event was something illegal or related to national security why would it involve a random house being oddly destroyed by explosives in the middle of a large lake??
For Washington the Double was the president after he went Serpent mode, Future presidents went on as normal after the double died. He did not sign documents as he became a serpent. Other people got sent to the Nixonverse. Washington only is the serpent. He might have had influence but not total control of the government. And he died in the end and never took back control. For human speech i do not know, but would assume yes. Lincolnlooker and StarrySphinx footage are real but the comments from Leonard Morlin are fake. As for house, we don't talk about the Gainsville Booms
The idea of the cargo cult may hold some weight, as there is quite literally a Cult worshipping a Cargo Ship in the series. Maybe it’s somewhat of a play on words, or maybe I’m just reaching, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.
the monument mythos has become a quick favorite of mine, with the fever dream like nature of its horror. id think a deeper look into it would be a good fit for this channel one thing about the ending i dont think ive seen many people mention- it seems the reason that the serpent is changed into an endless universe of tree clusters is that Alcatraz replaced it as well- thus why the clusters start to duplicate like cells. from my point of veiw Alcatraz represents nature- as it is a cell, which is life in one of its most basic forms. while the serpent represents a hubristic attempt to surpass the natural world- it even emerges from it like an egg. the serpent may destroy the whole world, but can never escape the reality that it too is a creation of nature, and only ends up destroying itself
Thank you so much for bringing this series to my attention. As per the content of the series itself, I feel as if the very focus of it is in some way important to the themes it seeks to explore- monuments and the stories around them. Rarely are monuments anything more than signifiers of ideas, however lofty those ideas may be. Yet in the Monument Mythos, these monuments seem to be far more than even those ideas. Incomprehensible beings that governments try to understand and control for their own ends. Perhaps this could be seen as a commentary on how governments, particularly the US government, exploits the ideas embodied by monuments for their own ends, often to the detriment of the average person. In the world of the Monument Mythos, this is very literal, with people being fed to these monuments en masse, their blood sustaining the beings within. More abstractly, it can be said a government is feeding into an ideology or idea every time it sends people off to die in a war. Rarely are such events as the Revolutionary War or Vietnam War couched in economic or geopolitical terms, at least to the average person. They're spoken of in ideological frames, and each death incurred is blood used to nurture those ideologies. That's just one idea, of course. I feel the series takes advantage of its framing to explore various concepts, both related to those core themes, and diverging from it or even using it as set dressing. Either way, I'd love to see your extended thoughts on it all.
I saw this video had been uploaded, and went and watched the whole Monument Mythos 2 seasons for the first time so I could come back to this video. I'm eager to see more analysis of it.
yESSS I'd love to see more of this level of analysis with the Monument Mythos! I do enjoy other youtubers analyzing a series within its own setting, but I think there's a lot you can draw on by looking at the context around certain monuments or locations or events in 'our reality' and looking at their use in the Monument Mythos, so I was excited to see you talk more about the statue of liberty's construction and the message on its plaque in your analysis - "give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" has a different tone with a creature that demands human sacrifice living within the statue's base, and says something if you're interpreting human sacrifice to american monuments as the human cost to this country-- tl;dr I would love to see more analysis of this series if you have the time! (also I'm not American so some of the cultural significance of these monuments are a little lost to me ahaha)
Recently have fallen HARD in love with analog horror in general and ARGs in particular. Thank you so much for covering this one! If you know of the Mystery Flesh Pit National Park, I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on that worldbuilding / horror project
I hope you cover the monument mythos more. I've watched a bunch of videos on it but you have a unique perspective plus you, unlike everyone else, take a look at the wider picture & I'm very interested in hearing your take on where the series is now. if you do, continue doing what you did here, don't summarize every single sentence on the series, do an overview & analysis. Thanks!
Yes, I'd like to watch a deeper analysis video. The Monument Mythos is so rich in potential interpretations, so evocative without being too on the nose. I feel like it's a dive into american deep psyche, and on the figures and the monsters (the point of the whole serie being that they often overlap) that haunt it. The main interrogation I'm left with as I finished watching the whole thing is: how much is The Monument Mythos a purely nihilistic work of fiction ? Throughout the whole narrative, the two 'sides' who wrestle with this "alien" menace - the 'liberal'/official side (Dean, Rockefeller, the governement...) who seeks to control it and the reactionnary side (A.D.A.) who tries to unleash it and revert to primal individualism - are presented as both wrong and even complimenting each other in this alternate world ultimate demise. Whistleblowers and simple citizens who don't loose their minds and become part of those factions are helpless bystanders, often confined to a horrible fate (e.g. Virginia). In the end, all those people do is trivial to the forces in power: the whims of monstruous 'natural' processes far beyond our control and, to an extend, understanding. In that sense, your cargo cult interpretation is coherent with my recepetion of the work. In that sense, it's kinda ironic this video went up just before your doomer 2022 redux one. The monument mythos seems to be the ultimate doomer experience it seems. (Sorry I'm not being very articulate here, english isn't my first language as you can tell :/ )
you probably won’t see this but please consider explaining the macabre experiment series. It focuses on classic creepypastas and puts a story that connects all of them with the smiling entity appearing in each one and the fact that they were all failed experiments. There’s 3 out right now and a smaller video that kind of goes in between I guess? But I would love if you checked it out
I'm happy someone else saw the underlying theme of commentary on American history, it's portrayal and the consequences of the reaction to events. I would be happy to see a more in depth analysis in your view
If you do do a series, I think looking at the ADA is important. I see a lot of people treating them as being the "good guys." But whether or not they are manufactured opposition or not, I don't think the ARG community has focused on the fact that they are reactionary on all fronts. While I do view James Dean as a distraction for companies like Mazie to take over and use the Lovecraftian aliens for their own purposes, I am not 100% convinced that the ADA has the best intentions for the people of America. When they did the riff on the attack on the Capitol in-verse, it definitely seems to me that they were tapping into the conservative movement mentioned in the pro-Dean propaganda. And their actions did a Patriot Act level of danger to freedom by sending people to different timelines.
Definitely noteworthy here that the genesis of the ADA was conservative white Southerners who no doubt would have been pro-segregation, among other pernicious policies. DEANDEMOCRACY even references George Wallace's run for President, so the creator probably has at least some awareness of what the opposition to Dean would be standing for politically.
As for bad orators, folks thought Lincoln would not be elected since he was not much of a talker and opponent Douglas was called "little giant" due to his political influence
to me the most super extra crazy and freaky was that that alcatraz is almost a sentient being, its so abstract to think a building, a prison, is alive and parasitic, idk i love how monument mythos is kinda absurd but also it makes sense but it doesnt... cool!!! being a lynch fan taught me to take stuff (movies art etc) as it is, maybe there is some deeper meaning but thats left for audience to decide. so i took monument mythos as it was, i didnt really apply politics to it but it was very interesting to hear what you have to say about it from american perspective. but also as i type this im starting changing my perspective and im now thinking about the parasitic alcatraz.. hm.. i wonder what the creator actually had in ming coming up with that ps i love how you think and talk man, i may not understand everything you say or may not even agree but i really enjoy listening to your thoughts
Loved the vid, but i had to point out that out of the 3 vides I've seen about this, one is 1h long and the other is 3h long so i find it funny that this deep dive is half an hour 😂
