I have a Klon circuit on one of my pedals and I just use it as an always on boost. Something about it just automatically sweetens the tone of the clean sound. The gain staging doesn't really come through playing in a bedroom but it does push the sound forward in a mix with an overdriven amp. I love the circuit but prefer the tone of other overdrives for bedroom playing.

  • @markhammer643

The Klon is not *supposed* to have a "sound". It was designed to bring out the best sound of a tube amp, NOT to have an overdrive sound of its own, the way a TS-9, or SD-9, or Rat, or KoT does, independent of amp. If you are expecting it to sound "good" into your Peavey, Crate, or Fender solid-state amp, you will be sorely disappointed.
If a person bought a Klon Centaur from Bill Finnegan, it would normally entail a 20-30 minute phone call, during which he would inquire about your rig and playing style. If he felt the pedal would not add anything, he would discourage purchase. Unfortunately, those phone calls ate into his build time, and were partly responsible for the backlog and delays. Those delays, in turn, resulted in people willing to pay large sums on E-bay just to be able to buy something right away (and I suppose have some bragging rights, given their relative rarity). But E-bay purchases did not come with the phone chat with Bill. So people expecting the heavens to part for their $500 were invariably disappointed, but heartened when they found they could flip the pedal for even more on E-bay to equally impatient people. Flip after flip inflated the price, none of which Bill ever received a penny of, beyond the original retail sale.
Bill contacted me in 2007 to help him with something some unnamed customers wondered if the pedal could do. He sent me two ungooped boards, one of them with every single component socketed so I could tinker with values, and a schematic (all of which was returned, intact). The build quality was exceptional. Small wonder that many "name" musicians relied on it, because it would undoubtedly hold up to the rigors of the road, just like equally-pricey Pete Cornish pedals. Many resistor values on the schematic were crossed out and other very close values replaced them. All of that makes me think there was no "definitive" circuit one could point to, although Bill stressed to me that any mods I made HAD to use the existing board layout, without any changes. So the general design remains constant, but whether any clones use the values Bill viewed as optimal is another matter.
It remains one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented pedals ever made.

FWIW, I have a different variant of the no-name Wish/Ali Express one on the right (jacks on the sides, LED doesn't have any kind of holder, and it actually says CENTAUR near the foot switch) and when you open it up, what's inside is an assembled kit (the kit is almost the same price, which is why I went for the prebuilt one) that's essentially a 1:1 copy of the original de-gooped Klon PCB that hit the internet in the 2000s. Sounds great. I've seen shots of the inside of the variant you have and the PCB layout is different but I don't know if there are any other changes.
I think what you might be hearing is the difference between a 1:1 copy of the Klon using average parts vs. a Klon-like pedal that has probably been fine-tuned a bit.

I like the Klon circuit, but the hype and prices of the real deal is hilarious. That said, my choice is a v3 Chellee Ponyboy, and I got mine used for maybe $100. My favorite feature of that pedal (aside from the handy bass knob) is the switch that goes from the very common schottky diodes to the fabled germanium 1N34A diodes and it makes literally no perceptive difference, something that the builder basically admits in much kinder words in his ad copy for the pedal, but people demanded germanium so he gave it to them, lol.

Using a Klon, real or clone, for that slight boot is such a waste of a pedal. A $20 boost is more useful. When you crank it up, it can sound really good with nice distortion but most people will still want to run a TS or other type of dirt pedal along with it.

I have a Donner booster that lives in front of my Cry Baby, the an OSR-1 after the wah. The ODR gets 12v, for a sweet, creamy, oh so touch sensitive OD that gets pushed into moderately heavy clipping when pushed by the booster.

I don't get overdrives that are just "natural-sounding tube/amp-like distortion"- like, why don't you just turn up your amp's volume if that's what you want? And if you want the amp to distort without being too loud, there are devices that help you do that.
Pedals like that have absolutely no character. I don't even think they sound "natural", especially considering most classic rock guitarists were using treble boosters, fuzzes, and early distortion pedals to drive their amps.

Whenever I see anyone in danger of falling for Klon hype, I direct them to the Shnobel video where he does a back and forth against an old Tube Screamer, and gets damn near identical tones out of the TS. He also does one with a Rat against the KTR, and up until 10:00 on the Rat's distortion knob, again, almost identical (the Rat's actually a bit better sounding to my ears).

Yeah, I think it’s so bizarre how Bill Finnegan supposedly disliked the Tube Screamer so much it inspired him to make the Centaur, and what he and his MIT engineering help came up with is a mid-humped hard clipping overdrive (that sounds worse than a Tube Screamer).

@Earendil's Star at the same time I TOTALLY understand the Klon hate, for many pickup/amp setups it can really kill your sound, no EQ can fix what's literally missing.
With a 4x12" even with a low wattage amp a Klon can sound great. On a single 12" or smaller speaker and with certain pickups your mileage may vary.
I just experimented the other night with the pickup simulator built into my old Boss GT6 (after reading some of the comments here and skimming some JHS vids' for the advice) before my Klon and wow, what a difference!
The Guitar Fetish single coils on my Tele shine just as nice as the Seymour Duncan humbuckers in my Les Paul!
Also I've noticed it can act VERY differently in an FX loop than before the amp input.
Anyhow, I've ordered a 1:1 copy Mogoo to accompany my Moskey :)
On the other hand, I've also gone down the rabbit hole of fuzz pedals.
Likely next getting an Op-amp EH Muff to occompany my Proco Rat clone, then likely going for an IdiotBox.

Everyone hates the Boss DS-1, and you can often find them at yard sales and laying on the ground at practice spaces, because nobody knows how to use them. If you turn the distortion all the way down, you can use the volume knob as a clean boost. Don't buy a klon.

People who buy original Klons are either elite huge rock stars who buy 3 at a time. Or complete jag offs who's hands will never touch a guitar in any meaningful way. People who buy or watch Klon clone demos are even lower down the line and should have to knock on all their neighbors doors to let them know who they are and what they do behind closed doors on the Internet.

I've just recently discovered the wonder that is the Klon (mine is a cheapy clone that looks a lot like your Mosky one). I think the trick you are missing a bit here is that you can (as you said) use the Klon as a boost, whether clean or fuzzy. But the magic comes when you combine that boost with an amp that's already overdriven. I use the Solid Studio amp/cab sim by Nux, and running my cheap wee Klon clone into that has been a revelation.
What I love about the Klon is that using the above method you can drive your sound all the way to the gates of fuzz and retain a musicality that other overdrives don't seem to match. AND this means the nature of the guitar circuit you are feeding in becomes key. Too many overdrive circuits make all my guitars sound the same. The Klon lets them be what they are.
