Well, actually, that's the thing! He evolved with the new tech, which does include some of these controllers. It's totally possible Jeremy, though larger plates would be preferable.

Hey kids Johnbronski here from the Masterplan Hip Hop Radio Show 1989 to 96. Just a little trick learn to mix by bar not beat. 4 / 4 time is the beat so drop your mix or release your scratch on the 1 (one) . Never on the 2, 3, or 4. Always on the ONE.... If you notice Jazzy Jeff does all the time which keeps the mix on time. Enjoy
These are well-edited mixes that cater to beginner, intermediate, and advanced DJs. Thanks! If you can do another video on another top DJ's mixing techniques, that would be great.
Very well done! I've been listening to Jeff mix since 1984 on the many mix tapes he had out in Philly. I've always believed he is ambidextrous because his cuts and scratches have always been so precise on either turntable. After Lighting Rich introduced the Transformer Scratch and Cash Money perfected it, there was a rumor in West Philly that Jeff couldn’t Transform. By this time, Jeff was with Will Smith and I got ahold of a mix tape where Jeff did the Rock The Bells routine. He killed it! Now, I'm going to say this, and it's just my opinion. Jeff did his Rock The Bells routine BEFORE DJ Bobcat did "Go Cut Creator Go." (1987) If you've every heard the end of "Go Cut Creator Go," you'll know what I'm talking about, but I'm just saying...
Thank you Rodney for setting the record straight about the history behind the transformer scratch. I don’t believe many DJ’s even know who Lightning Rich is as far as the community is concerned. I give you huge props to Cash Money. He’s definitely is one of my all time favorite DJ’s.
The phase half note trick is called “chopping” and was invented by dj screw. Hence “screwed and chopped” - swishahouse and such. It’s setting an identical track one quarter note ahead of the main track. Then using the crossfader to chop back and forth. For that extra Texas sauce, add flanger fx too. Love your videos Carlo, just wanted to add that little tidbit

DJ Carlo thank you so much for your videos. I have long loved JazzyJeff and this helped breakdown his incredible moves. One question I have is I recently upgraded to xdjrx3 and am trying to edit the echo settings for the best results of the tutorial. Since I’m not using a laptop or software …I don’t know how to change those! Any help is greatly appreciated.
Somewhat, but only in the sense that the roll effect would be the mixer equivalent if you're just on CDs or flash drives. The echo effect would also be slightly more precise I'd say, because you've got a program dictating your beats.
Carlo could you do some breakdown videos of Dj's with virtual Dj? Me and my Filipina would love to learn something like this on virtual dj. We have pioneer ddj sx3's for controllers.
It's the most used method of transitioning, but it's one of the more versatile ones for any genre. The other ways are to add some extra flare into your mixes :)
Great video Carlo. Just wondered how exactly you duplicated the same track to the other deck and get it to the same position as the track playing so quickly? I saw you hit the load button but that would usually just load to the start of the song. Any tips on this?
Now it’s hard to pick and choose which one is my favorite, but I do like the chirp scratch, I used to do so much back in the day and now I have two left arms 😂 but I’m going to start working hard on it.

I guess people had to name them instead of going by the onomatopoeia, because that could've gotten confusing really fast.
Hey Carlo, how to do the echo effect on traktor pro ? Thanks you 🙏
Use the delay effect! Essentially does the same thing.
He is and always will be tha magnificent Jazzy Jeff.
And will always be! One of my absolute inspirations!
I ❤ DJ Jazzy Jeff he has a nice way of mixing. I need to learn the transform scratch and 🦀 scratch. By the way I'm from Memphis Tn, can someone please help me thanks.
I've done a few scratch tutorials on the channel Splash! Check 'em out, they might be of help!
The thought of having a dj do this always bugs me, I can do it all on my phone why use that big expensive machine?
I'd say it's because the analog/physical feel plus the size of the equipment will allow you to do more. But if you can knock out a killer routine on a phone, then that's great!
@@djcarlo my brother’s friend sold his car which was all what he had for that DJ set, since then I’m confused what magic does it do?😕 and btw he’s an amateur dj not even known enough
Did you get confused by Jazz ? then let me do it even faster
Haha, I wouldn't mind some fast jazz tbh! Great genre of music there.
Is this fx setting possible on a ddj 1000 srt?
Yup! Might have some slight name variations, but they should all be there.
What is the song at 3:57 ?? UK Bass House crazy track
Unfortunately, I've forgotten what I renamed this song from! Sorry bud!
No worries! Just increase the Dry/Wet Knob to the max! and work from there
Can you break down transitions used by San Holo?
I'll keep San Holo in mind! Pretty great producer there.
Best DJ Iv ever seen who can blend the best beats is Jordan lee.
Jordan Lee is great too!
yes!!
Super awesome breakdown 🔥🙏🎷
More where that cane from!
Is there any difference between the echo effect with this setting and the roll effect?
Somewhat, but only in the sense that the roll effect would be the mixer equivalent if you're just on CDs or flash drives. The echo effect would also be slightly more precise I'd say, because you've got a program dictating your beats.
@@djcarlo what would be the right echo settings in Traktor pro using an s4mk3. I always struggle with it. Thanks
Carlo could you do some breakdown videos of Dj's with virtual Dj? Me and my Filipina would love to learn something like this on virtual dj. We have pioneer ddj sx3's for controllers.
I'm still exploring Virtual DJ as I've yet to properly ever use it. Maybe in the future bud!
IS BETTER IF YOU JUST DO A ECHO OUT. JUST MY OPINION LOL
Look up Instant Doubles. That's what he is doing.
@@AJ_UK_LIVE Awesome, I got it. Double click load on my controller works, learn something new everyday. Cheers respect 🙌👍
@@craigparry282 Glad you worked it out! I found out by accident when I clicked twice and wondered what was going on haha. Happy DJing bro!
Anther's got you Craig! Enjoy the instant doubles!
All the Denon Prime standalone gear has a wash out echo effect. It has one knob. And no filter is needed. 😊
That's right!
Great vid brotherman. You and Trazye are my fav Threestyle winners, and you both make it look easy. Cheers buddy!
Thanks man! Really appreciate that! It's all honestly in the practice
Now it’s hard to pick and choose which one is my favorite, but I do like the chirp scratch, I used to do so much back in the day and now I have two left arms 😂 but I’m going to start working hard on it.
It should be like riding a bike Benny! It'll come back!
What were the songs DJ Jazzy Jeff was using for the intro to chorus mixing (he was mixing it with superstition by Stevie wonder)
Unfortunately, I'm not sure. I can only get as far as telling you it's a remix of Superstition
Hey carlo could you explain maybe more about how to setup at ur first dj gig and what u need? I have a ddj-800 but do i still need a mixer than?
If you've got a DDJ 800, no need for a mixer! Just make sure the venue has the right cables for your preferred output
Good work 👍👍👍
Thanks Twinstar! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I love the transform scratch that I need to work on.
No time like the present to start practicing!
Saw him at The Do Over in LA and he was insane! Him and djAM are hands down my two favorite deejays of all time. Great vid!
Watching Jazzy Jeff perform is always a treat!
great tutorial vid!! Wouldn't mind seeing you do these videos using Virtual DJ also, thanks.
Maybe one of these days! But the tricks and techniques also apply when used in VDJ, so try giving it a shot there.
Calvin Harris pushes buttons and is worth $250 million
Gotta remember that he produces his music too! And history shows his albums sell well.
If I'm echoing out, I'm echoing in on the second song. I usually loop first song and juggle in the second.
That's an interesting way of doing it man!
DUDE!!!! You are da man. Thanks so so much for this tutorial.
Glad it helped you! Thanks man! More videos to come!
I’ll get to practicing tonight
Go for it Teshorn! And enjoy your practice sessions bud!
Tbh I actually admire all scratching DJs who make their own tricks 🎷
It's all that hard work paying off!
Can you cover DJ Puffy next?
I'll keep Puffy in mind for a future breakdown Saint!
salute I am from Philly I got to see Jazzy Jeff play in the late 80s
That must've been amazing to see!
Transformation scratch is the best espesilly when Jeff is on the decks 🎷
Oh indeed. It became the one technique that almost always gets associated with him!
