This song, and Tears for Fears is the definition of the 80's. Great vocals, catchy lyrics, and melody. No 80's party would be complete without them! God I miss those days!
You ain’t kidding! I get laughed at all the time because I still listen almost exclusively to my favorites 80s groups and the 70s. I just think it was an era when groups all played their own music, own instruments, no autotune, and the songs have substance. Such a great era!
What I started watching reaction videos a few years ago I was literally waiting for people to react to Tears for Fears because I knew they were so good. Songs from the big chair is just magical
Tears For Fears were a band in the 80’s where you listened to it, alone in your bedroom. For hours. People didn’t have a language for emotional problems back then. As they do today. Ppl didn’t ever talk about anxiety etc. Tears For Fears verbalised problems/turmoil for us in the 80’s. Yes their songs were played at parties. But they were an emotional touchstone too.
My youth was in the 80's and this song gaves me a flashback into the year of 1984. The decade of the 80's was full with different kind of music. Bands like "Tears For Fears", "Pet Shop Boys", "Talk Talk", "Depeche Mode", "Duran Duran" or "A-ha", "Eurythmics", "Alphaville", "Culture Club", "Kajagoogoo" and many, many more
Simple Minds, Heart, Foreigner, U2, Journey, Van Halen, ZZ Top, The Bangles, The Go-Gos, Huey Lewis, Phil Collins.. We didn't know how good we had it did we..
The more you listen to TFF the more you will hear that they do alot of building up songs in layers with a lot going on. Their songs are truth in the sum = the parts. Amber you are right about Rolands voice. Very unique & distinct. No one else sounds like him & his voice is instantly recognizable. Curts voice is softer but good as well. This song featured Rolands voice where Everybody Wants To Rule The World was mostly Curt. One of the best bands ever. Please do more by them , you won't be disappointed. Sowing The Seeds will have you thinking Beatles all day.
Sowing the seeds, caused their break-up to a degree. They argued a lot of the direction of the song, it was the search for perfection. Supposedly they were not happy with it originally, but it is a perfect song. The lyrics are brilliant, and the changes throughout are what makes it a perfect pop song. I'm a heavy metal dude. But t4f are possibly my favourite band growing up back then. What about mad world...fully electronic and another iconic song. woman in chains is pure soul music in a way. they can do everything. including a brand new number one album a month or two back..
I don't think Amber realizes that with the three (3) songs they have reacted to both have been the lead singer. I think she believes it has been Roland all along. I've always gotten The Beatles vibe from this song. It ends like Hey Jude where everyone can join in with a simple lyric.
When the full drum kit comes in during the bridge I just lose it. Every single time. It's such a powerful transition. And that guitar solo is severely underrated.
Woman in Chains is a duet they released in the early 90’s featuring Oleta Adams, and Roland’s voice combined with Oleta’s is absolute perfection, definitely worth checking out.
The album Songs from the Big Chair was an 1980's masterpiece from Tears for Fears. Shout along with Everybody Wants to Rule the World stood out as instant classics which have stood the test of time!!! Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are two of the finest singers and musicians to come out of England. I love their work and they sound just as good today as they did when Shout came out 37 years ago. Can you believe it's been 37 years? I was 17 when the album and the song came out. My God how the time flies by!!!
It’s a long song running over six minutes but when it ends, you just want it to start all over again! Glad you liked it. It’s one of my all time favourites! ❤
Tears for Fears are a Eighties British band from Bath, England! Roland is lead singer on this song but Curt led on Everybody Wants To Rule World. I love both of their voices! I loved the eighties!❤️❤️
This album was huge. A couple other must listens from it "Mother's Talk" and "The Working Hour". I think you already reacted to "Head over Heels", but you should hear "Broken" it the song that both leads into, and is reprised, at the end of "Head over Heels", really impressive when the two songs are listened to back to back.
As I said in my reply above Songs from the Big Chair was a masterpiece album from Tears for Fears. Totally awesome!!! It's one of my favorite albums from the 1980's.
Greetings from the UK, home of Tears for Fears. The "echoey" effect is a particular effect called gated reverb, actually discovered by accident by Phil Collins. It is used a lot of 80s artistes to create a deeper effect to their voices. It is used in Head Over Heels to accentuate Roland's vibrato, which I know Jay appreciated when you reacted to it! I would be interested to see what you make of their more experimental first album, The Hurting. Mad World and Changes are musts.
I know Phil is... well, he's Phil, so everyone has a strong opinion (I am an unabashed Phil/Genesis fan), but the man could music. Shame he can't play drums anymore.
Gated reverb is used on the snare drum in a lot of 80s songs. The common vocal reverb as heard here is a plate reverb with a medium decay, perhaps some slapback delay on there.
Wow, this song brings me back to how we were both original and hopeful and all the while in the cold war with Russia where no one knew if one day someone would just decide to push a button. We didn't have the internet, just what was reported on tv and in books. The insanity of building up weapons to keep a balance to try to keep peace. As a young person at the time this song helped me get some of it off my chest.
I was growing up then, and that was a scary time. I'm with you on Tears For Fears. J and A, please do Sowing the Seeds next!! It's a fan fantastic song, and the video is totally trippy!
Funny you mentioned the Cold War. I think the Aircraft at the beginning is an F-111 from the Base I was stationed back then! I was in England from '77 to '86 .... Greatest time for Music since the Beatles!
This is a classic 80’s track that was played in every club, school disco etc etc and their new album released earlier this year The Tipping Point is a MASTERPIECE !!! Critically acclaimed and ropes the charts too and selling very well globally too …. Very mature sound but their voices are as strong as ever !!!
I just listened to & watched the video for the title track The Tipping Point and it was amazing! They sound great & I like that they are doing the "how men age" thing so perfectly. Guess I'm once again spending my allowance on a Tears for Fears release😄
Tears For Fears has a highly underrated bass sound. Whoever it is that played bass for them, kudos. I also love the end of the video where there's dozens of people singing along, it makes you want to get up and sing and dance. Best line: "And when you've taken down your guard, if I could change your mind, I'd really love to break your heart." Amazing.
Tears for Fears is one of my very favorite bands. Their production is impeccable, such great songwriters. A couple more incredible songs from them: Sowing the Seeds of Love, Woman in Chains, Elemental, Break It Down Again, Raoul and the Kings of Spain, and one of my very favorites, Goodnight Song. So many more to recommend but these can get you started. Great reaction!!!
Seeds of Love by Tears For Fears is a dynamic song dedicated and attributed to The Beatles!!! This group is one of my all time favorites in music history ☺️☺️☺️
One of the few bands of the 80s whose lyrics expressed the idealistic values of the hippie generation -- while most bands of the era usually stayed within the "normal" bounds of pop lyrical content.
And they're back together and going on tour! Technique note: the sound of the drumming that you mentioned was a signature frature of 80's music they're "gated" which is a compression filter that really took over 80's rock and new wave. There's documentaries on youtube all about just *that* drum sound of the 80's
They sure are…and the new album is fantastic! 6 of my best friends and I are all flying into Phoenix, AZ to see them on their new tour. Love theses guys!!!!
Yes, and also they often used 'gated reverb'. It's a reverb sound that's cut off by a noise gate. This type of drum sound was basically discovered / invented by Phil Collins and made famous by the song "In The Air Tonight".
I have something special for you, watch “Mad World” sung by Curt Smith and his daughter. They sing in perfect harmony with both playing the acoustic guitar. Roland was the lead singer on this, Curt was on Everybody Wants To Rule The World. I saw TFF and Hall & Oates a couple of years ago. It was everything. 😁❤️
For the new listeners, looking through the history of music the 80s synth pop in particular captured urban pain like it had never been captured before. There were so many new sounds in the 80s and this song, as one example, captured in a powerful way that dissonance that perhaps we all feel sometimes.
Such an amazing song! I remember when this video played like 10 times a day on MTV, and the song ruled the air waves. I got tired of it after a while, but now, since I haven't heard it in a while, it has hit me again with the power of those amazing vocals, and all the instruments and sounds that are so masterfully blended in. It makes me want to go outside, throw my head back...and SHOUT! (The neighbours hate when I do that!)
I checked out in the '80s and focused on book lernin', but this group's music made its way to my study, and I still love it to this day. Thank y'all so much for keeping groovy music alive. If I could make one tiny suggestion, it would be that, when you stop in mid-sentence, you back it up a little, so that you don't miss, in this case, one of the most important lines in the song. "They gave you life, and in return you gave them Hell." has more impact than "They gave you li..." [Commentary]..."and in return you gave them Hell." As y'all evolve the form of music reaction, you will, of course, adopt best practices as they arise. If I weren't writing a story about the phenomenon, I wouldn't have mentioned it. I love the vibe here. The world needs a re-engroovenation. Peace and Love.
I love watching videos with you! You are not afraid to be vulnerable and to let yourself go while inside the song. I felt like I heard this for the first time again with you as always and I appreciate your appreciation ❤
Good Lord, they're so good! I loved them then & this still holds up. The 80's music landscape was so experimental & creative and people were so open to it.
I was lucky enough to see them live this year in London in a venue of about 2000 people. They closed with this and did a very faithful rendition. Gives me goosebumps thinking about it. Both their voices have held up very well regardless of their ages.
80's child here, had the privilege of hearing all this stuff new as it came out on records purchased by my parents and also listened to it on the radio. Tears For Fears was a definite favorite in our household and this song was an absolute f*cking MONSTER in the 80's!
I went to one of their concerts back in high school. We got cheap seats so we were behind the stage looking at their backs. But at one point the lead singer turned around, looked up at the balcony right at me and smiled. I geeked out so hard. I was giddy the rest of the night. Such a great memory.
1985 was a big year for Tears for Fears. This song was their second #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in a row. Everybody Wants To Rule The World was their first #1 hit in America. Back to back #1's. Unbelievable!!! By the way, the front man and lead singer of Tears for Fears is Roland Orzabal.
The guitar solo is a great example of how even a simple arrangement can be very emotively powerful when you make great note choices. I think it is such an unnoticed solo in pop/rock history because most people remember the bass/keyboard breakdown in the middle, and yet Roland's solo is the pinnacle of the song imo, because of how wonderfully the song builds up to it.
So Kurt smith sang the first song you guys reviewed “Everybody want to rule the world” and Roland Orzabal sang the last two song you guys reviewed “ Head over Heals” and “Shout”
Amber, these guys are still making music and going strong. My sister and I are going to see them in June in Charlotte, NC. They are on a huge tour this year! This song was one they put out after spending a lot of time in therapy. They both apparently had a lot of trauma from their childhoods they had to work through and their music was part of their healing process.
One of the most memorable songs of the '80s. Probably on most "Hits of the '80s" collections. They were a great group with a very unique sound. Classic '80s.
The song and the band name both relate to Primal Scream therapy, which they were both fans of, although they later became disillusioned with the creator of the therapy.
In 83'-84' I was a senior in High School. The Tears for Fears cd "The Hurting" was always in my car. The band was popular, but two years later when "Songs from the Big Chair" came out they were radio gods. While Shout never did it for me lyrically, the music of the last minute saves the song. Good choice, but this band's deep cuts are where they really shine. They pour emotion into every corner.
Love tears for fears, another British band to check out is Level 42, the song Something about you. Mark King the lead singer one of the best slap bass players out there. Thanks!!
Been waiting for this reaction. Phenomenal song! They just dropped a new album a couple months ago and you should def react to their song "The Tipping Point".
Tears For Fears were perhaps one of the most influential British bands of the 80's. They had a huge following at one time. Curtis Smith and Roland Orzobal were Tears For Fears..... They are about to release their first album in over 30 years.....
Very 80s, so good and full of emotions and passion. Those songs had great harmonies and melodies that stuck in your head forever. Comparable songs came from Simple Minds ("Don't you forget about me" or "Alive and Kicking").
@Vern Sherris it was a youtuber named Dusto Mcneato. I don't know if youtube took it down due to copyright or not. But Dusto also lampoons Journey, and A-Ha.
Absolute great group. I really love that this music video put a huge spotlight on the instrumentals. Sowing The Seed of Love is another great one message and instrumental wise.
Amazingly talented. Hands down one of my favorite bands. 💕. You should try “ Sowing the Seeds of Love “ next. You could spend forever going down this rabbit hole.
They were different from everyone else in the '80s. So much more creative. And it isn't just their singles that are great, their albums are outstanding.
Now you've done it!!! This song will be stuck in your head for a LONG time. Every time you walk into a grocery store and see a certain stain remover by the same name, the song will start bouncing around in your cranium all over again!
Tears for Fears was one of my favorite bands from the 80’s. When I think of 80’s music they are one of the first bands that I think of. Great music from a special time.
This song, and Tears for Fears is the definition of the 80's. Great vocals, catchy lyrics, and melody. No 80's party would be complete without them! God I miss those days!

Oh yeah
That guitar solo brings it home for me
💯 was such a great time when this came out. It was our anthem!
You should check out "Sowing the Seeds of Love"..a kind of homage to the Beatles. ❤️ Great song and video.
I second that suggestion.
I was going to write about that one and the more soulful "Woman in Chains" as two that are another cool variation on their sound.
Definitely!!
I haven't heard that song in ages and will listen to it after this video is over thank you for bringing it up

As y'all evolve the form of music reaction, you will, of course, adopt best practices as they arise.
The
80's music landscape was so experimental & creative and people were so open to it.
I was lucky enough to see them live this year in London in a venue of about 2000 people. They closed with this and did a very faithful rendition. Gives me goosebumps thinking about it. Both their voices have held up very well regardless of their ages.
Sowing the Seeds of Love is my fav from them. I think you’ll love it
80's child here, had the privilege of hearing all this stuff new as it came out on records purchased by my parents and also listened to it on the radio.
Song just puts you in a trance from the start, and then just builds and builds and builds up to that epic guitar solo. Great choice guys! So good! 🔥🤙
Yeah, the guitar solo is one of the best i have ever heard in a pop song.
This band brings back so many fantastic memories of my high school days. Great band and great choice of songs
Glad to see you on the Tears for Fears track. Now you MUST do Sowing The Seeds of Love and Head over Heels, two amazing songs!!!!!
Love Tears For Fears. Always have. The epitome of the 80's, ingrained forever in our hearts. What a sound they had!!!
I'll be at that show too. :)
Crazy ticket prices though. Ugh. I saw them a few years ago in smaller indoor venues for much less. I feel lucky now.
They are from the city of Bath in England and this video was shot at Durdle Door on the South Coast of England
@@RandomJane104 awwww I want to go!! Will they be in Raleigh?
@@marieb0625 Charlotte so far is the only NC show.
June 23rd Hard Rock Casino Atlantic City!
Tears for Fears! What a group! 'Head Over Heels' is another great song by this group!
Sowing the Seeds of Love is another great song by them
One of the most memorable songs of the '80s.
Thanks!!
Yessssss
Defo Sherri. Brilliant song and a quality video
Saw Level 42 live last year and they're still fantastic
@@annmonaghan4360 Lucky! Would love to see them!! 😁😘
Saw them in 2018 at Bournemouth UK, brilliant live
My favorite guitar solo ever! No Circus act, no ego...just pure musicality. 😊
My favourite guitar solo ever. Awesome song.
Check out some early Tears For Fears....Mad World, Change, and also Woman In Chains is another hit.
SHOUT is Brilliant SHOUT is Wonderful , SHOUT is PURE ENERGY )))))))))))))) only 80' S brings that MAGIC
My favorite by Tears for Fears is "Head over heals" ❤️❤️
Did you ever see the comedic literal version of Head Over Heels? It's hilarious.
@Vern Sherris it was a youtuber named Dusto Mcneato. I don't know if youtube took it down due to copyright or not. But Dusto also lampoons Journey, and A-Ha.
Tears for fears was a fabulous duo! Sowing the Seeds of Love, is by far their best song!
Amazing song from an amazing album!!! IF YOU LEAVE by Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark is an 80's Must Hear!!!
This band is INCREDIBLE.
One of my favourite bands! Love them. Woman In Chains is great too
I love how Tears for Fears and so many 80s bands really let their Britishness blast through. Check out the band, General Public, if you get a chance.
They just released a new album after all these years... and it is amazing!
Tears for Fears had extensive radio play during its time. Another one of the 80s legends! Memories
As angry teenagers we would be all yelling "shout, shout..." on the dancefloor when this song came on!
They have a new album out now! It's called "The Tipping Point", and it's one of the best of the year so far!
The Jam is worth checking out, especially songs such as; A Town Called Malice, Going Underground, That's Entertainment and The Eton Rifles!!!
Totally agree with The Jam
They were different from everyone else in the '80s. So much more creative. And it isn't just their singles that are great, their albums are outstanding.
Loved all 3 song choices (& reactions)tonight. ❤💙🎼🎙
Tears For Fears not only has a great name, but they churned-out a lot of great hits in the 80s and many of their lesser-known songs are just as good!
Now you've done it!!! This song will be stuck in your head for a LONG time. Every time you walk into a grocery store and see a certain stain remover by the same name, the song will start bouncing around in your cranium all over again!
I love how this song amp up over time. Like an avalanche of sound. At the start is relatively mild, but when those drums hits it is on baby!
Guys, you MUST react to "The Working Hour"! That song is a masterpiece and as much as you love saxophone you NEED to hear it!!!!
Yes. The Working Hour is their true masterpiece
This song was HUGE in 1984. A total 80s anthem."Sowing the Seeds of Love" should be the next one y'all hit.
Might be time to explore another British pop/rock group, The Outfield. The lead singer also has a very distinct voice.
Your Love being by far their best song and it was on GTA!
Tears for Fears was one of my favorite bands from the 80’s. When I think of 80’s music they are one of the first bands that I think of. Great music from a special time.
If you liked this one, best tears for fears song ...WOMAN IN CHAINS
Love that song and Oleta Adams is great on it as well
