The Breakfast Club was one of those movies that defined a generation partly because of how accurate it was. High school in the 1980s was EXACTLY like that and we all knew people EXACTLY like the characters in the film. So it resonated with everyone who grew up in that decade. It's a very nostalgic song and movie for me.

Timeless? This movie is extremely dated. No teacher could get away with the BS that guys does and parents would never stand for Saturday detention today either. Certain themes in it could be considered timeless but as a whole it has not aged well.

    • @deadsetanime7102
      @deadsetanime7102 10 місяців тому +2

@@BoosterGold52 I think that you're misunderstanding timeless in this context. Gone With the WInd or Uncle Tom's Cabin are both timeless classics yet both hold very dated themes. Dune and Foundation are also literary timeless classics. As far as movies we need only look at Star Wars 1977, American Graffiti, An Officer and a Gentleman, Top Gun and many other works from that era and earlier.
What makes works like these timeless is that they are so good or so well received by the people that changes in society doesn't affect them.

Fun Fact: The " la la la la's" at the end of the song is due to the fact that Simple Minds had not finished the lyrics to the song when they had to present and sing the song for studio execs before the recording. The "la la la la" was to fill in for words until lyrics were complete. Execs told the group not to change a thing. What a good call!

This song and movie were the like the anthem of a generation of kids in the 1980’s. Wow. Every time I hear it, it still gives me chills.
The Breakfast Club was about the teen experience, and high school especially.
It was about the labels we wore in high school and the groups we associated ourselves with.
Often times it seemed however, these labels were kind of thrown into us, and once they were there we were pretty much stuck with them.
As a result of this- for good or bad, they tended to become a self fulfilling prophecy in the way that we felt we needed to conform to these labels….
Jock, Preppy, Geek, Stoner, Skater, Rich kid, Poor kid, Mean Girl, Bad Boy, Good Girl, Good Boy, Slut, Man whore, etc.
    In the Breakfast Club,
A bunch of high school teens were in all day detention together from many different of these different groups with their associated labels.
What happened was at first they didn’t like each other because they felt like they had to abide by some unwritten “social contract” stating they must dislike opposing groups; at least in my analysis and interpretation, anyway.
As the day went on, they found out that they weren’t so different after all, and that many of the labels they wore around identifying their characters really weren’t true to who they were.
Life circumstances seemed to have attached these to them, and only with each other- seemingly opposite people they never thought they would even be hanging out with; they were able to finally take off the “masks” they had been wearing all this time and realize their true selves.
This was a coming of age movie that defined a generation, where everyone just wanted to fit in, to feel like they belonged, and to do this- altered themselves in a way that was often contrary to who they wanted to be or become.
The song by Simple Minds was a perfect addition, cementing it in the hearts and minds of everyone who grew up in the 80s- and now!
Whenever we a part of something- doesn’t matter what it is:
If we spent a lot of work on something with someone or a group of people and bonded in the process- deep down we all want to know that we touched those people and that time enough that they will remember us. That our time was not wasted, and that we said or did something to make a difference in their lives too.

    What is the movie about?
    "Dear Mr. Vernon,
We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us weite an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us...
    is a brain... ...
    and an athlete... .

    Does that answer your question?

I saw the Breakfast Club when it came out. I graduated from high school in 1972 and noticed that it wasn't any different in the movie as it was when I was in school. There have been cliques or social circles forever. We had the jocks, the cheerleaders, the nerds, the stoners, and others. I was able to know people from each of these groups and discovered that we all had one thing in common. Just trying to survive high school while trying to fit in somewhere.

The movie 'Breakfeast Club' is basically about a group of high school kids who have to serve detention on a Saturday. These kids are from different high school social classes. Some are jocks, nerds, popular, outcasts. Nothing in common on the surface. After being together for a few hours they develop a connection (friendship) to each other after learning about each others personal lives. At the end they part as unlikely friends. Someone who you would socialize and acknowledge as a friend during normal school hours or functions. Great movie. Its 1985 and I'm spending my summer on the beaches of the Greek island, Paros with a fresh group of friends from France. Every morning we'd roll-out of our sleeping bags on the edge of the sand and finish sleeping in the gentle waves. Volleyball and swimming till dinner on a cliffside cafe with just caught fish then to the charming village bar to get legless. This song became our anthem and we'd hop up on the tables for a bar-wide group sing and while the bartender sprayed us with the soda gun, we'd cry while gazing into each others eyes promising as we went back to our lives across the continents "Don't you forget about me" Thanks to this song, I never have and I never will.

There's also gonna be a lot of disagreement, because the definition of "hit" can be nebulous. A lot of bands that end up on one-hit wonder playlists actually had multiple hits. "Take On Me" was a-ha's biggest hit, and people remember them as being a OHW, but they also had two hit singles in North America, and they had many huge hits in Norway. Tears for Fears have 3 different songs that end up on OHW playlists.
"Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners is one of the few OHW that isn't disputed, start there.

This song is basically imprinted in minds of anyone who was a teenager in the mid 80s. It was the gateway for many of us into the brilliant back catalogue of Simple Minds. My favourites are New Gold Dream and Theme for Great Cities. The bass player Derek Forbes is just awesome.

This was a massive hit in the UK and not associated with the Breakfast Club, Simple Minds were fab.
My boyfriend was going off to Australia in 1986 for 3 months on Operation Raleigh, he asked me to listen to this song every day while he was away...
A song has a meaning to everyone.
