This is much later than the Duran Duran songs you’ve reacted to previously. It was a comeback for them in the early 90s when music had taken a turn towards the more somber and moody (as you mentioned).
When I was 15, I played this song over and over along with Ordinary World from the same album. That’s definitely a song to check out also. That and the song Electric Barbarella, which was later still, but more upbeat and reminiscent of their earlier material.

Winning the fan vote is not a guarantee that DD will get into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Hopefully, they will get in. The fan vote is a very, very small part of the overall process. What matters is what Duran Duran's peers who get to vote, historians and music writers, who also vote decide to do. There are over 1,000 voters and it is what their vote says that counts. Not the fan vote. The good news is that six out of seven of the fan vote winners have been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Absolutely love El Diablo which I believe had an ocarina and not panpipes as I first thought when I originally heard it. Election Day, Keeping Me In The Dark, Goodbye is Forever and The Promise are also great.
John and Andy joined up with Roger Palmer and Tony Thompson to form The Power Station. Some Like It Hot was their best song (in my opinion 🙂)
As for DD then Ordinary World is a must. Also The Wild Boys, A View To A Kill, Union Of The Snake, Notorious, Hold Back The Rain, New Religion, (Too Late Marlene - just love the beautiful melody and Secret Oktober live at Wembley '98 - close your eyes and drift in peace). There are so many 😁

Duran Duran got their big breakthrough in the USA by being among the first UK bands to utilise the 24 hour cable channel MTV, which began in 1981, which needed as many music videos as it could get. Duran Duran's good looks, catchy songs and creative videos were a perfect fit for the channels audience. This hit song is more than a decade into the bands career, and the video has hints back to their origins. The frilly shirts the band members are wearing is a nod to what they were wearing in the 'New Romantic' era which they were at the forefront of in the 1980's. The band's name was inspired by a villainous character (Durand Durand) in the 1968 sci-fi film 'Barbarella'. The opening credits of the film show Jane Fonda stripping off in zero gravity, and at [5:19] in the video the backing singer, Tessa Miles, recreates a similar look kicking off her chains underwater. Tessa has sung with pretty much all the major artists from the 1980's (David Bowie, Tears For Fears, The Police, Annie Lennox) and also many of the top icons from the 60's and 70's too (The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Cher).

I am the number one Duranie! They were the best of New Wave of British bands of the early eighties! They ruled the eighties with amazing hits and videos and they are very versatile! In the MTV generation videos were everything and we waiting with great anticipation for the next Duran Duran video! This song is from the nineties and they still tour and make new music! They have lasted so long because they are so versatile! They even split into two separate bands in the mid-eighties, Arcadia and The Power Station, and had huge hits with them and then reunited to continue their reign as Duran Duran!!❤️❤️

I like most of Duran Duran’s songs but this is by far my favorite. I don’t know if it’s because it came out when I was in high school, and the music of my teen years definitely have a specific place in my heart. But it’s still a playlist mainstay for me. I also love “Ordinary World.”

They provided the soundtrack to my high school years. Try listening to "Rio", "Save a Prayer", "Is there something I should know", and "Girls on Film". Just as a cool aside, the album cover art features the wedding day photos of the parents of the band members.

You guys are hitting a lot of the great 80’s hits lately; YES! For Female Friday, PLEASE do Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam’s “I WONDER IF I TAKE YOU HOME”; you haven’t done any Freestyle yet, and this song was a HUGE hit! Freestyle in the 80’s and early 90’s was club/dance music, primarily by Latin singers; growing up in Brooklyn, it was everywhere ❤️

1992 thus was their second single off the album known as the wedding album....one of their most beautiful sounding songs ever.....that drum snare, the intro, the backup singer .....BEAUTIFUL....DD were known as the English video bench mark of the 80's...unfortunately by 1986 the band had gone from 5 members to 3 and were struggling to keep up with the bands/artist this album got them back into the charts again

I was a teenager of the 80s and, for better or worse, the top two bands that i probably fanatic out over more than any others -- and there was a thousand of them -- were DEF LEPPARD and DURAN DURAN. Both of these bands had like 10 hit songs on every one of their albums.. and a ton of albums. Again, there were countless amazing bands and talent in the 70s and 80s, but these two dominated the Top 40 (or whatever) radio stations in the 80s -- understandably.

'Coming Undone' is a term used to denote the state of losing the thoughts and will that keeps one together in day to day life. When you lose your strength to hold it all together is when you 'come undone'. The song is about pleading to a woman to understand that she keeps giving her emotions to other men, but he's the one that she runs to when it's over and she 'comes undone'. This theme is done just a little better in the Sick Puppies (who you have not reacted to yet... I'm waiting) song 'All The Same'. Although when you first react to them, I would suggest starting with either 'Riptide' or 'Maybe', both of which were major radio hits.

Duran Duran are very versatile! This song and "Ordinary World" (please react to this one next?) were from their comeback album on the 90s. For more Duran Duran songs with this vibe..."Ordinary World", "What Happens Tomorrow", "Out of my Mind". From the 80s "Save a Prayer". For more dance funky Duran Duran "Notorious", "Skin Trade" "Pressure Off". For experimental Duran Duran "The Chauffeur" (80s), "The Man who stole a Leopard", "Invisible" (from their new album), "The Universe Alone". I love them! More DD please? 🥰 Great reaction guys!!!

Fun fact - Duran Duran took their name from the villain (Durand Durand) in the 1968 sci fi film Barbarella starring Jane Fonda. If you have never seen this film - you MUST watch it, it's iconic, camp, hilarious, and fantastic.... Also, Kylie Minogue mimicked the very iconic opening sequence of the film in her music video for 'Put yourself in my place'.

A lush and gorgeous song I’ll oftentimes listen to over and over. When Warren Cucarullo (from the band Missing Persons) replaced Andy Taylor on guitar, he brought some really fresh ideas. The dreamy “underwater” guitar riff is so cool. You should go way back in Duran Duran’s catalog next and try “Planet Earth” ..

  • @thesavvyboy

GREAT CHOICE!! Duran's catalog is chock full of hits. I won't even make a suggestion for them. Throw a dart at a list of their catalog, and you're bound to find a hit.
The tone of the song you're accurately detecting is indicative of where they were in their career at the time, plus I think it was also heavily influenced by the still somewhat new guitar player Warren Cuccurullo. He replaced the original player Andy Taylor. They were veterans that had been around for well over a decade at that point. This and other songs from this era reflect that maturity.
YES AMBER!! It's an arguable point but it has been stated that Duran effectively invented the narrative video. You saw that in Hungry Like the Wolf. Even The Reflex which I guess at it's core is a performance video is plenished with hard edits and esoteric imagery that for the time was WELL outside the norm for performance videos. Since they made outstanding, radio friendly music, and since the five of them were "pretty", they were able to leverage videos/MTV to cultivate a monstrous following.
    J -
If you want a rocker, Duran's original six stringer (Andy Taylor) and bass player (John Taylor) did a one off side-project called the Power Station. The lead singer was Robert Palmer, a big name at the time. They remade a song from the seventies called "Get It On (Bang a Gong)". I don't think it was a number one smash, but I recall it getting a lot of airplay on both radio and MTV. I think you in particular would appreciate it.

    • @billw715

Warren Cuccurullo was not a "somewhat new guitar player" with Duran Duran. When recording the Wedding Album in 1991-1992, Warren Cucurullo was already playing in Duran Duran since 1986 and then he became an official member in 1990. He was with Duran Duran as long as Andy Taylor was with Duran Duran when Duran Duran recorded The Wedding Album.

@@billw715 Duran Duran was formed in the late 70s. Come Undone was released in the 90s. Using your math Warren was an official member of the band for three years (20%) of the band's 15 years of existence to that point. While he wasn't a brand new member, he was somewhat new.
