I think it depends on you. This song definitely reminds me of lost loves from the mid-80s and I'll never forget it. People who don't identify with the song or a personal experience won't necessarily remember it.

Curt sang the last one, Roland sings this one. Sometimes they take turns on the lead, sometimes they share vocals equally.
Both such masters at their craft. I am a huge Tears for Fears fan, and to me each one of their songs, especially the hits, are an experience onto themselves. Pale Shelter, Shout, Sowing the Seeds of Love, Advice for the Young at Heart, Woman in Chains, all are worth a listen for anyone who hasn't already heard this legendary band

“Nothing is popping out to me here.” They just went full on church chorus emotional mantra and you stopped it. That’s why nothing is popping out to you. For those of us who were kids in the 80s, this one has a special emotional resonance. I think if you try more patience and give this song time and space you will experience that feeling with it, too. Maybe not.

Tears For Fears really did stand the test of time. They wrote incredible pop songs. I still have them on a playlist. I'm not sure if you guys have heard Sowing the Seeds of Love yet, but that song is a trip and you really should check it out if you haven't. Shout is another good one.

As good as "Songs from the Big Chair" is, I like both "Elemental" and "Raoul and the Kings of Spain" even more. They continued to grow from album to album, even if they weren't quite the "hit makers".

Sowing The Seeds Of Love and Woman In Chains are OUTSTANDING songs!!
This song has one of the greatest hooks of all time. It is also very uplifting, which is unusual for Tears for Fears. They make amazing music and craft timeless lyrics.
The best part about tears for fear is the rhythm complexities. Several different rhythms come together in harmony
You know what's crazy is Roland is in 60s now and he can still hit those falcetto notes like he could 40 years ago !!!
Mad World is my favorite song of theirs. Worth a listen.
This comment deserves more love! Mad World has been covered by so many people, but the original version is the best IMO.
As much as I love that song and this band, the Gary Jules version is the one that really gets me.

If you want a song that pops out from these guys, you have to do Sowing the Seeds of Love. It is a nod to the Beatles, and it is also absolutely brilliant in every way.
And don't forget "all Around the World" by Oasis! Those two songs we mentioned were as close as one could get to The Beatles!

Love that song
Badmans song is very good song from that album, maybe even best in my opinion. Seeds of love album clearly have two sides, the sun and rhe moon thing ect. First side is more "poppy", second not experimental but somethimg along those lines. Less "poppy" idk.
This would be my next recommendation after Shout
Tears For Fears are one of the most underrated bands of the 80's. The Hurting, Songs From The Big Chair & The Seeds Of Love are all phenomenal albums. If you decide to keep going down this road I HIGHLY recommend checking out Woman In Chains. It's one that not a lot of people recommend for some reason despite being one of their best written and produced songs. It's quite beautiful and I really hope you end up checking it out.

Nah. I was a teen in 1985 and they were as huge in the US as they were in Europe. Heavy Rotation on MTV and two #1 singles and #3 for Head over Heels. We loved them. These kids “discovering” old-new music don’t have context to how much in the zeitgeist they truly were.
@@jb8280 My dad grew up during that time period and we've discussed it. They were certainly big during the 80's and that's not really what I'm saying. Unfortunately today they're not a musical act that gets brought up as often as they should when discussing great music from the 80's.

🤣🤣 I was a single Mom of a toddler, working full time for minimum wage in the 80s...stressful, full of worry about how I would make ends meet, little food in the fridge, and a beat-up jalopy that was a gas guzzler. Oh and daycare on top of that. I wouldn't ever want a do-over of the 80s!

Interesting reaction from you two! "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is a great song, no doubt, in a quieter, more subtle way. This song, "Head Over Heels" is built more around monster hooks. In this song, each vocal that shifts into falsetto is itself a hook. The piano riff which turns into the vocal "la-la-la-la" at the end is another great hook. It may be interesting for you to note that you have listened to these two songs in reverse chronology; "Head Over Heels" was a big hit before "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" was released. Take a step backward yet again and listen to "Shout," which was their first big hit single that put them on the map. In a certain way, you might hear elements of the other two songs. "Shout" is definitely all about the hooks, but also delivers a worthwhile message.
Very keen observation Richard, and almost completely accurate, the only caveat would be the success part ("put them on the map", as it were), they were already famous after their first album, called "The Hurting" which yielded hits like "mad world" and "pale shelter". Granted, they were more famous in UK and Europe, but nevertheless...
We know how much Beatles meant to TFF (Orzabal/Smith compliment each other very much as did Lennon/McCartney) - In my view, the lalalas in this song are the nananas of Hey Jude - for everyone who knows Big Chair & Seeds of Love, check out their (for now) last album Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, after so many listenings I think it is their best (!)... but Woman in Chains & Bad Mans Song from Seeds are essential

That you have, regarding "Mad world", I find Jules' cover to be overtly soft and lowered, and I immensely prefer the original. TFF's song uniqueness lies in the source material words being so somber and terrifying against the backbeat of synthpop/new-wave.
I can't find record of any country in which HOH was released as a single before EWTRTW. In the US, EWTRTW was the first single released (June '85), followed by Shout (July '85), HOH (Oct '85), then Mothers' Talk (April '86).
I am with Jay! This song always puts me in a space of optimistic contentment (with a hint of melancholy) that I can't explain. Love your channel!

Funny you used the term Rabbit Hole for this, because "practising magicians" often use Alice in Wonderland themes in their art, and Roland Orzabal is a full on jedi alchemist. Listen to the Album Elemental.

One of the best 80s songs of all of that decade. The album version segues into a sort of "coda" to the song, which apparently is live - that rocks the house. Yes I used to hear the long version on the radio! It's called Broken, and the song is right before Head Over Heels on the album, then reprises at the end.
The reason you don't remember the falsetto from the other Tears for Fears song you listened to (Everybody Wants to Rule the World) is this song is sung by Roland and the other song was sung by Curt. The two of them both sing lead for the group.
It’s a perfectly composed pop song. I agree with Jay. There is something about it that draws you in.

"it's hard to be a man with a gun in your hand" is one of the most perceptive lyrics ever written. For me, this song captures the joy and wonder of falling in love better than any song I've yet to hear. Tears For Fears were/are simply awesome. Glad you gave it a listen!
This is one of those songs where the more you hear it, the more you dig it. Then you watch the movie Donnie Darko and end up absolutely LOVING it. I can't explain why...it just seems to happen that way.

I adore this song! The way it´s used in the film Donnie Darko is fantastic. I would also recommend Sowing the Seeds of Love and Woman in Chains. And, if you get the chance, they are brilliant in concert.
And Donnie Darko used Gary Jules’ haunting version of TfF “Mad World.” If I recall, I think Roland and Curt commented that they liked Jules’ cover more than their original. I really like both versions, but Jules’ version couldn’t have been more perfect for Donnie Darko.

NICE! I was hoping you'd listen to more Tears for Fears besides Everybody Wants to Rule the World. Which is an amazing one, but they have MANY MANY even MORE amazing songs and this is one of them! Yay! ... he's right.. that little Rick Astley like vocal style WAS a thing in the 80's. Human League, Tear for Fears, Psychedelic Furs, ABC, Heaven 17 all did it. It was definitely a thing. It's cool you noticed it.

I'm so glad Jay liked this. This song takes me back to 85' when my family moved to LA from a small town in Oregon as a teen. Our new neighbor came over with her funky spiky hair and danced to this song. My sisters and I looked at each other and it was clear we were not in Klamath Falls anymore. I love how music is a time machine.
My wife's from rural Coos County, OR. She could not WAIT to finish college and get out to the big city.
We live in Atlanta now. Her first big arena concert was The Police's farewell tour in 2007; we followed them to three different shows.

This entire album was killer. I am surprised it hasn't been more heavily sampled during the retro-80s sampling phase of dance music.
If you like these guys, you should check out OMD "Orchestral Maneouvres in the Dark" who were a synth-heavy band that are solidly danceable and cool sounding. Check out "Messages" or "Enola Gay"

For me the best thing about TFF was how Roland and Curt interchanged and harmonised together, their lyrics are amazing too. 3 other great songs to check out are "Shout" a banger, "Mad World" their first huge hit, and the heavily Beatles inspired song "Sowing The Seeds Of Love". I love the cover of “Mad World” used in Donnie Darko, performed by Michael Andrew and Gary Jules. Kind of bleak for this show, but I couldn’t get it out of my head. It was perfect for the movie.
This is my favorite Tears for Fears song. Followed closely by “Shout”. “Mad World” is so appropriate for these times. The original is great. But during the lockdown, Curt did an acoustic version with his daughter Diva. Their voices blend so beautifully. 💜
I could cry. This is my all time favorite song. I am so glad you guys got to react to it! It’s hard to explain all the reasons I adore this song but honestly the first time I heard it I just stopped and had to listen over and over again. I still feel that way.
This song definitely has that quintessential 80s sound. Especially the power behind the vocals. 80s music was so good. The hair and the fashion left something to be desired, but the music and the movies were phenomenal.
The hair and fashion were just as unique as the music. Pop culture was at its peak in the 80’s and early 90’s. Then it went downhill, especially after all the boy and girl bands of the late 90’s and early 2000’s.
@@taoist32 Unique, yes. Good, no. I grew up in the 80s. I wore the clothes and had the hair styles. But they were not great fashions. Some were much worse than others (shoulder pads in women's shirts and jackets, for instance), but it was generally a bad decade for hair styles and fashion.

The dancing bass on this song is so sublime. You don’t really notice it til you listen to it - but this is a killer bass performance.

Yes , Sowing the SEEDS of Love is a must . THey have 2 lead singers . The first one you heard was the second lead of the group . They wrote some deep pop songs and are still sounding good after all these year .
Please give their newest single a listen! Tears For Fears is back with The Tipping Point. It's a beautiful tribute song dedicated to Roland's wife, who sadly left this world too soon. I'd also like to add Sowing the Seeds as well. Fun fact: Roland met his wife on the set of that music video ❤️

You guys have no idea what it was like hearing this for the first time along with seeing the video (MTV was everything then...). It literally still gives me goosebumps today and brings back memories of my youth; single, living in a different city on my own, maturing in my mid 20's, Warm fuzzies...

One of the most vocally iconic songs out there. My father is a huge tears for fears fan, and when he first showed me this song , I was mesmerized. Being my dad is a drummer and I’m a bass player, we both learned to play this song , and every time we play it together, it feels just as great as the first time.

the 80's was an absolute bounty of incredible music , nothing compares to the variety and absolute massive success that FM and MTV brought to the Industry.
These guys are a step above most '80's pop, and they're still making new music. Their new album, The Tipping Point, is due out in February (the first single dropped last month), and they'll be touring next year (I just bought tickets). They released an album, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, back in '04 which didn't get a lot of airplay, but it's really good. It was the first album with Curt since '89's The Seeds of Love. A few suggestions for next listen: 'Sowing the Seeds of Love', 'Woman in Chains', 'The Working Hour', 'Mad World', 'Call Me Mellow'

The tour for this album “Songs from the Big Chair” was my first concert ever at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tn, first row, the show was incredible!

Is the last line of the song, the librarian he fell madly in love with is now seen serving him dinner when they are much much older. That hits hard. But it rings true because Roland met his wife- to- be on the set of the HOH video.

Ah, this was one of the songs on the Donnie Darko soundtrack, along with "The Killing Moon" by Echo And The Bunnymen and a cover of "Mad World" which has maybe become more famous than the original recording

One thing that's extremely unique about this song is that it's a live recording. There's more to the album version of the song, so you do hear the audience if you're listening to that version, but they never had to do a cut of this song in the studio because the recording of their live performance was so clean and well-done. And as far as I know, this is the only live recording of a hit song that had a conventional video with zero live footage.
That's bullshit. The reprise of 'Broken" is live on the album. Yes, they played this song live along with Broken in concerts but this is obviously a studio version!! Check your ears.
Sure sounds like a studio recording. Crowd must have been as quiet as a church mouse on Sunday.

The way the song is presented on the album (and also on radio airplay, at least at first) makes it seem that way, since the studio recording is blended with a live version of "Broken". IMO it's a totally understandable mistake to make, and there's no reason for people to be such jerks about it, lol.
I just watched all of your Pink Floyd reactions and love that you are listening to them. I have been a "Floydian" for decades and David Gilmors Guitar sings to you. He has always been my favorite guitarist. Their music takes you on a journey and closing your eyes lets you fly with them. I suggest you listen to Us and Them and Wish You Were Here. Yes. Rob! You are correct, with the Rick Astley thing. It's actually like a whole thing from that time. Young British guys who sing with that sound. It's a throaty sound. A tinge of kermit the frog. (Not meaning bad. I like the sound). A technique that just kind of happened. I'm literally waiting for one of the vocal coach reactors to address this.
But Roland and Curt wrote most of theirs Rick was part of that soul less factory of Stock Atkin and Waterman.
That early 80's British throaty vocal sound you're talking about, I believe it really started with Andy Partridge of XTC. Their first albums came out around 1979-ish, and his voice had that sound very heavily. But you're right in that it certainly was a thing for a while there. Cheers!

I think it's more about vocal range versus an affected throaty sound. Pop male voices are more commonly in the tenor range (higher range to cut through the bass guitar and drums). Roland is a baritone, as is Rick Astley, Andy Partridge, Morrissey, Dave Gahan, Martin Fry, etc. Curt Smith is a tenor, key to those sweeping TFF's harmonies. Anyway, the 80s was a great time for baritones!

I generally need a bit more oomph in my music, but I love this song. I love the fact that there are not one but two catchy choruses that will get locked into your head for the next few days 😁. Also, next time you hear this song, just listen to the bass playing, It is awesome.
This song, Pale Shelter, and Mad World are my absolute favourite Tears for Fears songs.
For another great 80s song with the same title, I'd recommend the Go-Gos "Head Over Heels". It's got great keyboards in it as well.

Sowing the seeds of love is an absolute must by this band, by far their best song in my opinion.
“Shout” from the same album was another huge hit in those days. “Sowing the Seeds of Love’” the title tune from their next album is another great song, as is “Woman in Chains.” Not content to rest on their laurels, that they actually have a new album all these years later.
Yes, Shout should be next and then Sowing the Seeds of Love.

Tears For Fears will be releasing their first album in 17 yrs on Feb 22nd 2022. They will also be touring in 2022. Still making great music all these years later.

I remember when Tears for Fears was a new talent, Roland and Curt claimed that they started the band so they could afford some mental health counseling...But the band got so popular that, with the hits and the touring, there was no time for it!

Tears for Fears "Shout" is great as well. I had this album and this song does stand out once you hear it a few times. You can focus on their amazing vocals better without the video too.
