    J.C. just wanted to tell you thank you for this video. I am a mechanic in the marine field and very mechanically incline. This video saved my butt. I refused to figure this out with any help. Until I exhausted all my trouble shooting. I am not a diesel mechanic, but I an almost figure it all out. I am not to familiar with this truck. I bought this truck 3 years ago. its a 2001 4700 international with a dt446e. This video was very helpful and wanted to personally thank you for your video. I am officially a youtube mechanic for 7.3 diesel thanks to you. lol

    This video gave me the confidence I need to track down why my ecm doesn't get power, I can't find a correct wire diagram for my bus, but it is very similar to your rig so this was ever so helpful, I'm working on my first bus and the amount of wires is pretty intimidating

    The green crusties are usually the root of most electrical problems. When I was working, one of our Macks quit running on the interstate. After checking for a while, we had it towed back to the shop. After running down the problem, we found that the seal on the ECM was twisted when put together at the factory. After 2 or 3 years of winter snow plowing and treating the crusties had eaten the majority of the pins on the computer and connector. Looked at repinning the harness, but because of the way the harness was made and run, there wasn't enough wire to make it to the ECM. The only solution was a new harness and ECM and atrip to the dealer to have the ECM programmed.

    • @MrTruckerf
      @MrTruckerf 3 роки тому

      Dang! That cost a bunch and no way around it. I had a truck which got struck by lightning, of all things! It fried the ECM and every sensor as well as melting wire in various places. I was out about 4 grand and we did a lot of the work ourselves.

    Hack "fixed" the problem only makes it worse. I have added a new wire before but because the old one was damaged to bad to save. Sometimes its the simplest things that take forever to find.
    Good job fixing it the right way. Wish I could find someone that was half as good as you to higher in the shop.

    I work on electrical problems on cars at work. It's my favorite part of being a mechanic. You really aced that electrical problem. So many people have such a difficult time with electrical. It can be learned but it takes someone really dedicated to wanting to learn to get it figured out. I work on automobiles and there is no lack of electrical faults. I see a lot of issues of wires breaking inside if the insulation and that requires a pull test to find. You taught me something tonight, I can totally understand the difference between car engine harnesses and truck harnesses but I never even considered insulation breaking down from rubbing on the loom. I guess that's what you get when a truck engine runs 8+ hours a day and a car engine maybe runs 2. Great video! I enjoyed it - thank you.

    Great fix J.C. From finding the initial problem to tracing it down to a tiny little cut in that single wire. It’s truly surprising to me that the wiring harness loom could stop a truck dead in its tracks just from simple engine vibration over 20 years. Also looks like you caught it just in time too before it frayed even more wires in the harness as well. 👍

    I like the light bulb trick. I had a VW Passat, that was a no start, no fuel pump, but I got 12v at the plug at the tank, it puzzled me for days, until I took a 20w kitchen halogen puck light and used as a test light, I found that the fuse was blown, but my volt meter did not know that.

    Exactly... high impedance test showing voltage does not equal current carrying capability. Similar, but conversely, is how a bad battery terminal can sometimes start a vehicle, but then loose connection and not recharge the battery. I've tried explaining that one several times to people, but end up just having to do the work for them to prove it. Do you have a "toner" a.k.a. fox&hound set? I've used that a few times trying to figure out where a wire is broken. Doesn't always work perfectly (won't show break if it's simply high resistance), but it's another good tool for the bag. Also helpful for mapping wires when there's nothing to distinguish them from another. Thanks for the video and excellent explanation!

    Great husband and wife team work do. JC nice job, been awhile since I've talked to you. I hope all is well with you and your wife and family. I actually found a couple of wires like that on my Silverado. It's amazing that they don't make the inside of the Looms out of smooth plastic, I guess it's just cheaper to make the mold that way. So either I take it all apart and tape the whole entire thing or I will split a piece of smooth plastic covering the wires and then jamming it back into the original Loom. So far it's worked pretty well. You know the reason why they do that is for failure, just imagine if all the wiring under the hood was done like that especially where it contacts the engine. You wouldn't have to worry about your wires rotting or rattling and coming apart or the worst yet rodents sure they'd be able to chew the outside but by the time they got to that other part on the inside it would be unlikely that they would actually get to the wires. Anyway JC I just wanted to wish you and yours well and let you know that I'm still here and watching.

    I really enjoy your videos and you are very knowledgeable with International trucks. I'm working on a 2001 International T444E Dump truck with electronic auto trans. I have a no start issue using the ignition switch. I have either no power or no ground going to trans shifter. I also have no source power at start relay on dash. It click when key turned but no main power. Could be a ground issue. Possibly none to ecm? With a remote starter button hooked on starter the truck starts and runs. But the electronic controlled shifter and transmission won't do anything. In your video you put a piece of mig wire in the back side of the ecm plug. How do I get the bolt out of the plug and the back cover off of the ecm PLUG? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 роки тому +1

      ecm doesnt supply power to relays. it controls them. always start with basics. power and grounds at the batteries. then at the engine and starter. branch off from there. continue until you have checked them to each and every destination. verify you "wait to start" and "engine warn" lights operate. once you have verified these things, you can start to look at what is or is not happening. electrical diagnosing can be difficult if there isnt any direction or procedure. if you think of it like this, it might be easier. "what does the ecm and trans have while sitting and not running? what does it take for the ecm and trans to turn on? what does the ecm and trans have to see to crank?" then move forward. ecm and trans need power and grounds at all times. they need an key on signal to "wake up". if you have that at both, now look for do they have a "crank signal" from the key. once you verify that, now you look for what the ecm needs to have before it enables the crank prohibit to let voltage go to the starter. the ecm must see "neutral" or "park" signal from the trans. your automatic trans controller and shifter must be working properly for it to send the needed signal to the ecm crank enable. that is where i would start.

    Fyi, your ohm meter sends a known current or voltage through the load, then measures the voltage or current across and through the load for you to readout resistance or ohms. You are in fact putting power through load when you use an ohm meter. Ideally, resistance value should be checked on isolated loads.

      your meter is not putting enough load through the wire to be sure it can handle the entire load it is meant to carry.

      @j.c.smithprojects agreed--great use of the 1156 bulb. Most electronics will be immune to the low current resistance measurements from a dmm. Made the statement for anyone who is curious how "horseshoe" mode works.

    The weight of all those wires resting on an enclosed loom plus the vibration plus the hot and cold cycles was enough to rub through wire insulation and allow contaminant ingress. These are the kind of real word issues that usually lead to changes in build processes.

    What is the buzzing sound in the background when ignition switch it turned to on before cranking over ? I got a 1994 4600LP & I got crank no start and the buzzing sound is now gone. I was thinking of changing my icp and ipr

    You have a link to that wire schematic? I have a similar problem. No power signal to the start relay on the firewall. I've been looking around and found so many wires stab tested and now corroding it's disgusting. With ignition on I can jump the pins on the firewall and it all starts/runs great. No power coming out of firewall bulkhead connection but back probed ignition switch and is good.

      No need, found my problem. Between ignition switch and crank relay wire 17 and 17C I had a body builder starter interrupt circuit installed but not used anymore. Found wiring fault. Bypassed body builder interrupt and unit starts fine.
