Those are lava tunnels. One thing about hardened lava is that it's extremely hard so hand tools are pretty useless against this.
One thing he mentioned in an old video is that some people use plastic card and oil to put between them and the rock to slide on it and get unstuck. I don't know if he take those whith him tho.

My principle is simple- As long as I can walk around the cave I am in,
the moment I have to crawl, wriggle or lie down I am out.
I would rather die falling down a cliff than getting stuck in a tight cave

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  3 роки тому +114

A lot of good cavers do not participate in crawling caves. There are cavers who like to climb and do rappelling into deep pits there are others who dive others just go in big caves. There's plenty for everyone!
In fact almost no one goes in the Crawley caves.

Start to finish, from one cave.
Your background and what started you off cave searching and cave diving,
Your sons opinions on cave adventures with you, and more explore information about cave, how old, etc?
Q&A’s & Giveaways from caves or liked comment etc,

Summertime is a lot of quadding far up north in the Boreal followed by hiking further to find new lakes, river routes for canoe trips, good hunting/fishing areas, or virgin ground for gold panning. I also like looking for barrie patches or chaga mushrooms on birch trees along the trip. I try pushing myself further and further out and honestly I doubt i could ever get lost at this point… lately ive also gained interest in scrapping the copper off of old abandoned power/telegraph lines but thats a secret… shhhh. I can not fathom how you can physically (and mentally) place yourself into a such a tight crawl space, deep underground where no one can easily reach or rescue you from if it goes wrong. Not even being able to turn around for me and the feeling of being constrained near has me sick with anxiety watching you! I still enjoy watching though lol :D

Awesome video as always. One thing that would be really great is to put some time indications in your videos.
As a viewer we can't tell how much time you spend on an expedition and that would be very interesting to know :)
So maybe you could start a timer before entering and stop it once you get out with some timestamp at key moments ?

Yea. Something like that. We're trying to show locations in one of our upcoming videos. As well as orientation (which way is up). If we can solve it while talking in the cave, that's easier than graphics. For us.

@@CalvinHikes Great ! On the other hand having no indications on screen helps the immersion in the cave and translate well the difficulty and mental strength required to do this that's why I'm suggesting to put those infos at keypoint and not during the whole video. We want our dose of claustrophobia hahaha
Anyway, keep the great content ! Best caving youtube channel in my opinion :)

I am so awed by your expertise! I love horror movies, but this is beyond anything I’ve seen so far. I’m claustrophobic AND afraid of spiders 🕷
What I wonder is how come I didn’t suffer from claustrophobia when I was a young man, yet these days it makes me panic? I worked as a bricklayer and often worked inside tight chimneys and it didn’t bother me at all.
