Hey brother, you seem like a pro at camping and bushcraft, but let me share a tip you might want to try out. Heat some rocks in the fire until they’re blazing hot, then when it’s time to sleep, place those rocks beneath your sleeping area. Of course, make sure there’s a layer of logs or something protective between you and the rocks. Over time, the rocks will radiate heat and keep the ground under you warm, giving you a much cozier night. Let me know how it works for you!
@@dbuchanan51If theyre wet, it’s a higher risk. But if they’ve not “exploded” in the fire, they won’t explode, so you’re safe to put them under your bed.
A "Siberian All Night Fire!" When younger spent many a night in Alaska using a long fire in front of my lean-to. Would have used the Siberian fire, but didn't know about it at the time. Thanks for the video as it brought back many a fine memories.
The real problem, camping alone in such harsh, nasty conditions, is if you're not careful you can get into more trouble than you can get out of. You definitely know what you're doing. Beautiful country. (Liked the way you started that fire and set up your camp.)
@@CoyleTools you’re missing the point I’m trying to make. With a little more effort you can avoid snow in your face . After all what’s the point in building a shelter?
A very good method. However the shelter is to high, this increases the loss of heating. A lower shelters makes it possible to have a 3 dm over hang in the front. This over hang creates a situation where the warm air stopps and circles down again. It also makes it possible to have a deeper shelter that saves you from snow, rain and wind. As for the bedd it was good but you need 30 cm, of small spruce branches to isolate from the cold. Someone gave the advice to heat stones to put under the bed. That is a very good suggestion. Spent some nights while in the army in similar shelters. I did not enjoy it even with better equipment.
Камней, для использования на открытом воздухе, должно быть довольно много, а доставать их из под снега неприятно. Без закрытого контура эффект от них будет незначительный.
I dare you to do a WWII, WWI, or Vietnam survival challenge where you only use food and supplies from one of your choice. All can be ordered from Amazon tent tools..etc all must come from the chosen year. That would be a cool UA-cam video series
I wouldn't have used so much energy keeping the fire going. A good sleeping bag and one of those 9 Micron reflective bag covers and you'll never have another cold night in the bush.
Excellent set up...now, if you had a sheet of mylar, and another of clear plastic, you could create the Mors Kochanski super shelter. Hang the mylar on the back wall of the shelter, to reflect the radiant heat of the fire, and drape the clear plastic over the front, to create a vapor barrier. This arrangement has been shown to raise the inside temperature of the shelter to almost 70 degrees, even in sub-zero weather. The only caveat is to clear the ground between the fire and the shelter to mitigate the chance of the fire spreading, and to watch for too many sparks, which might compromise the plastic sheet. Try it next time...
At least you used a tarp instead of spending hours cutting a hundred logs just to make a wall, like so many other videos I've seen. Liked your log arrangement. I suppose you just pull them forward as needed. That saves cutting separate logs.
One tarp is rather very tough during coldest weather, bring extras would be nice maybe two or three tarps extra would be perfect warmth and cozy, hmmmm thank you for sharing outdoor shelter skills .....😊
What I saw was he had a lot of tarp left behind him that he covered up and I wonder why he didn’t use that extra to cover his head and body with instead of wasting it behind and on the ground ? But was great watching
Just curious- why didn't you make your shelter so that it covers you more? It seems as if a lot of work was put into making the frame, but then the tarp was just laid on one side. If it snowed a lot, you'd be covered with snow.
That is a good fire thats for sure, around here I have to wait for a good depth of snow before having good size fires, I dont camp out much now in minus 20 its to cold and im to old hahahaha but still enjoy sitting by a nice hot fire in the forest on a snowy day, it is hard to beat that thats for sure.,
I did some camping myself, regretted. After the end of the adventure I smelled like smoke burned wood charcoal. Thank you smelling like that for us thank you for the adventure you go for us
Thanks for your recommendation. I'm impressed by how fast you can cut many trees, and it’s important to have a saw, an axe, a tarp, and cooking material with you.
I’m not planning to go camping in the winter, but my question is why wouldn’t you build a fire first? My next question is why wouldn’t you have your food pre-cut and pre-diced and pre-peeled. I’m not talking about pre-cooked. I’m just thinking that doing all of this as a waste of time that could be better used for something else. What was the concern about wild animals and how do you protect yourself from them?
Questions: 1) Is there any reason why you didn’t cover the shelter from the front? 2) will this kind of fire last the whole night? 3) your cooking: Carrots, Potatoes, Onions…what in the bag? Nice video Thank you
how was the night? how many times do you have to get up and move the logs? Just curious , my experience is that a fire like that throws heat for a while depending on how dense the fire wood is, it may go up fast. A decent fire will heat back 10 feet for a bout an hour.Like your saw.
Aren’t you going to place small limbs in front of your shelter to or another tarp to lock in heat from the fire to keep you warm. Make it a super shelter that way.
Learning how to survive in the wild woods during winter without freezing to death is essential. Learn how to build a shelter quickly and efficiently to protect you from the cold and wind. Additionally, you will learn how to properly light and maintain a fire to keep you warm and safe throughout the night.
This video is good for temporary shelter survival but look at the rescue rate related to how long someone lost will have to survive until rescue. The shelter is not enclosed enough to survive the night let alone a couple of days. Not to mention the temperature drop at nighttime and the probability for a wintery mix storm or a deadly freezing rain that will soak him and put out all fires close to his open tent.
If it’s up to me, I will make the camp on the southern slope where the sun that day dries some of the stones and the ground and there is already about 2 degrees warmer, without snow cover.
