      He's an old blues fanboy, you should have figured that out pretty quick, haha! Open tunings, especially G, are pretty well ever present in pre-electric blues and rag time guitar. I love it, especially out of a old 12 string acoustic. Wish I hadn't lost my old stella in a fire...

    I walked into a guitar shop in Eugene, Oregon twenty five years ago and heard a guy playing in Open G tuning. He showed me how to tune this way. I immediately started playing in Open G and got that Stones' sound. Before long I graduated to five string, Open G tuning and I as off and running. It is almost like playing a different instrument.

    After I watched this video I remembered that I had an old Strat copy with a broken big E tuner so I took the string off and tuned it to open G to see how it would sound. It's a lot of fun ! You can't really play Keith's stuff properly if you don't tune to open G. I intend to leave it that way . Everyone who likes the Stones and plays guitar should try it

    Great advice. Got to respect Keith in that he is a master of that big fat sound as well as intricate riffs and voicing support , both in large arenas as well as recording. I played on a large stage once, was totally lost, everything changes, to be able to step into venues like that like it ain't know thing is a highly adaptable music talent. Got to remember Keith isn't just a guitar player, here he plays pretty good keyboard if inclined to do so

    Everyone always talks about Keef's open G tuning, but on stage, so many of the Stones' greatest tunes - "Tumbling Dice," "Happy," "Street Fighting Man," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," etc. - are actually played in open B because Keef places a capo on the 4th fret.

    Years ago I was replacing a busted low E string. As I was tightened up the new one, I plucked it to hear where it was, tonally. When I got to the low A tone----a fifth below the E "destination"----I stopped. Now, I had a low A note on my Spanish guitar. I played it a bit. The new, low A combined with the standard second string A to make a bass octave. And if I wanted to play it elsewhere, all I had to do was press those two strings down with my index finger on my fret hand. Now I had a fuller, richer overall sound. That was 27 years ago and I haven't gone back. I still tune this way. Try it.

    Yeah, the magic of open tunings , wow, can't be over emphasized. The cooler guitar sound usu. issues from an open tuning, I mean you get root chords w 'lots of extra stuff', a good guy to visit on this is Matt Smith for D'Addario strings, good lesson on you tube for the diatonic chords in open tunings, neat stuff, you can move across, well, check it out. I definitely became aware of open tunings through Keith , and Jimmy page way back when.

    Ok so the guitar is supposed to be tuned 5 notes apart on all open strings like the Piano, this opens the fingerable range to much more and much more than doubles it with the same fingerings in part or whole on all frets and strings! Then what is going on & established with Universal Frequencies to open their full repeat range in wanted Kords and possible combinations. Is to take any Root Note (r), then add 4 more notes in order up or down tone on the Chromatic Scale, or 5, or 7, or 8, or 9 or 12 more notes up or down tone or octaves from the originally chosen Root Note. ( R + 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 or 12 ). Then repeat that pattern at every new octave up or down tone from the original Root Note. So then ( r + 12 + 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, or 12 ), then ( r + 24 + 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, or 12 ) & so on till run out of Notes. This is the Major Formula side for Kord Kreation, The Minor side is all the other notes in between these two note kords that are not these two note kord combinations. Then all of the Major two note kords kan be combined and added in together, then Minor side single notes added in also for new combinations, tones, feels, effects and Vibration Formations and Sounds. This is and was found from searching for more in Musik of self effort and added patience steadily, and by The guidance of Our First Eternal Mother afterwards. Who told after looking for, deeper enough, of how She kreated Her Universe to be and Operate, and how Frequencies combine with each other sanefully. Kreated Partly with Positive thinking, Magik and Musikal Frequencies & Kords sent across her Universe. They also do much more than this after Landing, after being kreated from the finitest particle points possible, and with different Geometrical shapes and patterns. To Plant seeds on far away Planets able to grow them, or something...

    2 dislikes?! Must not know what #openGtuning is- DGDGBD(low - high)*note: Keith doesn't use the low(6th) string.. If I'm not mistaken. Keith?

    I've been playing slide in Dropped D tuning, which is 5/6th standard, for over 40 years now. It's my favorite.

      No, not bragging ... but I am the guy Don Felder invited up on stage to play slide with his band in Calgary a few years ago. And the guy who played some slide live on TV with Ringo Starr. Here's some of my slide in dropped D: ua-cam.com/video/DN5M7YoEMm4/v-deo.html

    Most people associate Keith with drugs & I guess I do too, but only to a point. I love listening to Keith talk about music because I'm really into the way he plays & especially the different tuning he's used over the years.

    Can anyone think of an example of Keith playing a diminished chord in open G?

    • @therebex23
      @therebex23 7 років тому +6

      He uses it quite a bit, and I'd argue it's played more often in the Stones' more well known/iconic tracks like "Gimme Shelter" and "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" - it's the ones with that twangy something haha.

      Maybe when jamming by himself, but not in a single Stones- or KR-Solo song I know of.

    According tb Mr. Richard's he learned the Open G from Don Everly... Well, I think Mr Jones did the Little Red Rouster's slide in that tune... Did'n't Mr Richard's noticed that, back in 1964?

    I read in the Premier Guitar (PG) 11/2018 issue that the songs Destiny Now and Pink Hearts Across the Sky played by Mr John Williamson is in Open G tuning. John was quoted there as stating Open G sounds like Keith Richards. I’ve begun to play this Open G tuning myself after reading lots and lots of stuff about Keith Richards using it. I also realize a 5-string banjo uses this tuning allot. Ive found chord progressions I’ve used are simple to play in this tuning (one guitar I’ve actually taken off the ‘fat 6th string like Keith does and in Open G it’s really great sounds minus the D tuned string coming from that guitar after doing that). Also finding (I think...) my melody playing is spaced out more on the fretboard so farther to reach to get let’s say a CMaj scale. If anyone knows a good online source where I can see lots of scales/boxes (and chords ok too) please reply here so I can check those links out. Today I found another lesson accompanied with a music sheet in PG magazine “Deep Cuts: Ry Cooder’s Funky Fingerstyle”. I believe Keith had credited Ry with turning Keith on to Open G. I’m dedicating a big chunk of my practice on Open G so any suggestions be much appreciated.
