- The Rolling Stones:
Keith Richards' Open G tuning is more than just a different set of notes on the fretboard; it's a portal to a musical landscape steeped in bluesy swagger, rhythmic swagger, and the raw, unfiltered soul of rock 'n' roll. Let's explore the unique features of this tuning and how it shapes the legendary guitarist's sound.
Keith Richards' Open G tuning is more than just a technical detail; it's a sonic lens that refracts the essence of blues, rock, and raw emotion. It's a passport to a different musical world, waiting to be explored with every strum and slide.

Weaving... Yeah! I drink a bottle to Keith and Ronnie (weaving) and a bottle to Mick and a bottle and a jar of...to Charlie (rip), a bottle to tha Glimmer twins, a bottle to Open g, a bottle to Bill, a bottle to all the Others and to the Crew,, a ton to the Stones, at all...! And then i have to ask someone to bring me home... Praises
Do fans realize this cat was a junkie for many years and that The Stones never really recorded anything memorable since the heavily Mick Taylor influenced "Exile On Main Street"? They ceaselesly continue to tour since Jagger is an egomaniac basically as caricatures of their former selves. Bill had the good sense to hang it up but The Glimmers continue to rake in the pounds sterling from the suckers that pay absurd prices to look and listen. Pathetic!
Keith does what he does and no one does it better.
@@MarkRoberts-bj2me You seem so angry. I know, don't watch clips featuring the Stones. Problem solved.... also, get yourself a girlfriend... or a boyfriend.... or a life.... or, at least, get out a bit. Don't worry so much. Give your mum a kiss & a cuddle.
you forgot Brian !
HHhhaa,m yer wuld be pissed by then.
Damn! The more I think about it, they have written and played the soundtrack of my 70 years. Hail, Rolling Stones. Still with us.
I wanna be Keith Richards when I grow up!!! I'm 65 years old so there's still hope!
Me too 😂😂😂 I am 68.
I'm with ya !
😂brilliant. Same here.
Meet you Absolute
Lol
I'm glad Keith is still alive.
So am I
He's not. He died years ago, but nobody can bring themselves to tell him.
So is Keith !!!😊
And always will be!
You must be one of the good people.
I'm 63 and I never feel old as long as Keith Richards keeps rocking.!!
I was a teenager in the 60s. Can you imagine someone back then telling me that Keith and the Stones are still playing and releasing new music in the year 2023? Mind blowing! Btw Keith back in the day was one of the original bad boys of rock; no poser.
Yep.. he always struck me as being a bit of a hard nut when he was younger, a man not to be messed with. Hes obviously mellowed since then ; ].. Id bet he gave Brian Jones the facts of life talk.
First saw them live at the Romford Odeon in 1963-they were playing warm up for Freddie and the Dreamers-been a fan ever since!
Never been a poser, always just his self! Mindblowing
In 50 years playing guitar I have stayed away from open tuning. Tomorrow I’m going to do an open G tuning. Thanks for making this clip on Keith🌟
@@K777John. Posts like yours bring thrills to great clips like these I look for on YT
We are so fortunate to still have Keith and Rolling Stones for so many years!
He seems like an organic authentic sound, not relying on electronics, computer, AI and fake music. I shaked his hand and it's as rough as sand paper. It just shows how he has been literally a hands on guitarist all these years. ❤❤❤❤
Keith you are and always will be a guitar Legend
THE GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL BAND THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN~!!!!!!
This is what I always say! They are almost unreal, having rocked and rolled through 7 decades soon!
I love the Rolling Stones
You and me both. I practically worship those guys. Talk about the soundtrack of my years.
1962 was when I first became aware of The Rolling Stones & saw them go from strength to strength through the 60's. I bought lots of their records & I still have them. Respect to Keith & the boys@
I wish I discovered the genius of Richards sooner in life. Now everytime when I lose encouragement or get in a funk at getting better at the guitar I listen to the Stones or Zep to remember you don't need to be ultra fast or even all that accurate to sound so good. You need the rhythym sure, and the phrasing, but it more so in the feeling, soul and attitude that makes it feel good when you are playing R&B based rock n' roll. Richards has done so well at keeping the Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry spirit alive through his playing.
Open G is what I've been working on lately it's fun I want to learn my favorite guitar licks of the stones
Keith was and still is the master of open tunings
Keith Richards is my spirit animal.
Great choice. . .
love that they keep coming back to tumbling dice. it’s perfection
What a legend, go Keith 🙂👍🇭🇲
I love this Fing band so much it makes me wanna cry. I have all of Keith solo adventures. Nothing better than to hear Keith sing on a solo tune. Rock on Keith.
Why you take it so hard is a fookin tune x pensive winos
Keith Richards ist der beste Rhythmus-Gitarrist aller Zeiten...seine Riffs sind einprägsam, fast hypnotisch und immer ein Erfolg...
🎶🎼🎵🎸💯...
✨💫🎶💯👌🙌🤗
And as he has shown on several Stones tracks ( Live with Me, Sympathy For The Devil, jumpimg Jack Flash ) he is an outstanding bass player as well !
Keith, an absolute legend of guitar, what a fabulous history this man has in music and what a great catalogue of sounds he has given to us. Thanks for this and keep up the music man!
It’s interesting to me that Mick wrote the music for Brown Sugar. Obviously influenced by Keef’s favorite Open G chord shapes.
I salute the talent , it must be tremendously gratifying to have people go crazy over a classic riff that you created.
Keith has the best crunch tone ever!
Gimme Shelter in open e is a master piece. Watched Keith live and was trying to see how he was playing. I finally found out it’s open e.
Thought it was open g. But i haven't checked
@@psndsh actually I think ( could be wrong) its open D but capo'd up to E.. I know he does a few with a capo and many people tend to open D then a capo as E can be hard on some guitars because o the tension. Not 100% sure but that would explain the capo in a few of their numbers.. as well the capo is in the right place if it is open E
Open G and Open E.
Love Keith. Best riffs ever.
Ya-gotta say they are my favorite band. So many iconic tunes. From elementary school in Germany in the 60s to the present day, I still enjoy all the classics and the new gems. Lucky enough to catch the last show in Denver with Charlie-RIP. Gonna try to get lucky again this summer and score a few tickets.
Very nice tribute to Keith, what a treasure he is to our cultural lexicon. I also am a big fan of RL Burnside an exploiter of open G, amazing voicing and rhythms.
I myself Iam not so far away from 80. Thaft neans that I fear the day that we hear the next Rollling Stone will leave us forever like their drummer. I sure hope they stay with us for many more years and keep showing the world that age is just a number!!
I was just thinking yesterday how astonished I was that Keith lived to see 80 much less be playing and touring without doing it from a wheelchair.
I LOVE U MR RICHARDS
keith richards........................a living saint
Open tunings, 12 Strings, Capos, Single vs Dual coils, acoustic guitars, and although I've never played one mandolins bring yet another great dimension to string creation. Guitars have so many hidden cool things about them. Each opens a new door that you would not find if you limit yourself. I'm retiring soon and will be working more on writing and playing. I've had decent 40+ year career in music. Can't wait to just hang around and play all day. Gonna be a blast. Thank you Keith for showing the way.
I retired about 14 yrs ago.. I play daily from 1 to 4 hrs.. ( im counting a few days each week where I jam for half a day). I have to admit I prefer to play accoustic but still play the open tunings here and there and yes a few stones songs work well.. I took up old Mis. John Hurt fingerstyle in 2019.. Open G5 string in 2020, and slide in 2021. I own electrics but find that the old blues seem to work better on accoustic. ( or at least I enjoy them more LOL ). your right its a blast..
Yeah yeah hail to the master. ❤
Thanks Keith for bringing open tunings to the forefront. Lucky enough to have latched onto your work decades ago and it's been a thrill ride. (One small correction to the video that I'm sure Keith would approve of. Mick wrote Brown Sugar while in Australia making a film. Keith acknowledges this in his book)
Mick rocks and Keith rolls.
Wot a character a true living legend best rhythm guitarist out there
Less is more. Perfect description of Keith and his playing style.
Ry Cooder introduced Keith to Open G…. and getting rid of the the 6th string. Open tunings were an old blues pickin scenario.. slide came later.. Ron wood does most of the slide work in these pieces.. Keith is a brilliant musician who brought all this together.. and made it what it is today.. He took rock and roll and brought it to the heights of the classics, Bach, Beethoven and Keith…. ( and not necessarily in that order) I have been listening to and playing stones music since the 60s.. and im still playing their music.. Im 72 and still discover many things in their music that are new to me..
As one of the founding members of the Rolling Stones along with BRIAN JONES! It was Brian's band.
Brian didn't have a Band until Keith & Mick joined!!
He said so himself in an interview.
Keith Richards, I love you man.....talking about playing R&R guitar.....❤
GOD BLESS U SIR.
AMEN 🙏
If you're a guitarist, and find yourself in a rut, try an open tuning. It opens your mind into a whole new world of possibilities.
Glad there is a narrator (with a thought out script) that knows of what he speaks
Sounds like AI to me
@@nigeltailwind Yes it seems the Video was created by AI which for Keith is totally wrong, he is as analog as a guitarist gets.
Keith Richards, I think he is the best guitar man!!! I love you!!!❤❤❤
Open tuning is so cool. He is one of many to use it and he has created an amazing collection of songs featuring it. He usually plays it as a 5 string removing the low E which is a big part of it.
Other than for slide where it is common, I can find very few tunes to my taste in Open G by other bands--sure Led Zeppelin and the Black Crows, maybe one ZZ Top song, but that is it. What am I missing?
Kieths playing is super cool & he proves that you dont have to be a silly fast shredder or tear around the stage like Angus young to get a beautiful melody & some awesome riffs, to me its a unique style, just like the amazing Geordie Walker.
Keef’ knows the beauty of open chords especially open g. Open g sounds so much fatter tone wise than standard tuning. My main guitar is a Les Paul jr. Tuned to open g. I can play every thang from Muddy Waters Catfish Blues to ZZ Top Tush to Soundgarden’s Burden in My Hand John Lee Hooker boogie style and of course, Honky Tonk Women. Playing solo gigs anyone watching and listening always has some folks looking around for the second guitar. Keef’ and the old blues guys knew how to maximize performance with simplicity. You only need one finger to play 3 chords.
Great posting,many thanks 👍
Thank you too...Glad you enjoyed it
Fabulous 👌
Cape Town,South Africa. I was a teenager in the 1960's. The Rolling Stones are still my all time favourite band. Keith is fantastic on the guitar.
Sadly, they never toured here. My 17 year old grandson is learning the guitar & loves my '60's music. I can't sit still when I listen to his guitar playing. Keep it rocking Keith....you are a legend.
Keith is totally on. . . Open tunings are a gas. They open up a whole new world. You play less and it sounds like more cos of the drone strings. . . This is also why lots of Indian & ethnic music sounds so cool and exotic. . . same principle. They invented it, but Keith adapted it into rock to get his unique sound. Well done. . . Legend. . .
Try "Ventilator Blues" from the Exile album. A master class in open G of combined slide, fretted notes and groove with very few equals. Just sayin'...
Loved this entire video
Thank you...Glad you loved it! 👍❤😊
Changed my mind about Keef Richard ! ------------------------------------------------------- WOW !!
From being the best guitarist in history to snorting his dads ashes, this man is an icon!! I love him because he's not a fake, most down to earth person in show biz! xxxxooo
Hello great video. I’m 65 years old Retired. Just starting to burn to play electric guitar. I saw Rolling Stones when I was a kid and for Keith 80 years old still or strong and hit it on note to enjoy play guitar and have fun doing it for a year and a half. it’s always been on my list to learn the guitar even for my age it’s a journey.❤
Nicely done!
Brilliant! Apart from Fallon
Let’s hope he lives to be very old,a genius.
The greatest rhythm guitar player, 1/2 of the greatest song writing duo in rock and roll history, and one hell of a lead guitar player. The master.
Is pretty freaking awesome. Not sure what I’m thinking about the reduce screen and all the other stuff on the top of the bottom, but you know thank you appreciate this
The longer I play the more I realize what a lucky man Keith was
u mean IS
It's time for the world to think about what we're going to leave for Kieth, Willy and Ozzy.
One half of The Glimmer Twins🎸🎸🎼🎵🎼🎶
Love Keith Love stones forever !👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Love this💙 thanks 🎼🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thank you too...Glad you like it!
keith est vraiment un bon gars , ultra cool , une vie de dingue totalement. et sérieux aussi avec sa famille.. 🎈🎈🎸🎈🎈🇲🇨
I read Keith's autobiography which was very enthralling. Now this video gives a pleasant insight into the depths of skill he had. The rock n roll lifestyle is not for me but I embrace the music with joy
Loving what you do is it
Love open G and open A tunings .... sound possibilities are like having a different instrument in your hands.
Gotta love a good guitar ref !!!!
My sister's 9 year boyfriend in the 70s turned me on to the Stones when I was just in Jr. High....he was a caring and big brother to me....GOD works in mysterious ways....he died of cancer....and I've never forgotten his kindness and protective care to a "nobody" like me. I still miss him and I pray GOD blesses his remaining family wherever they are.......TMc
The stones are the greatest band 2:37 it's very obvious , name another band who could put a number one album out at their age
My hero…….🥰🥰🥰🥰
Saw the Rolling Stones 5 times. My Favorite band of all time and Keith Richards in the Early days was Untouchable
along with Alvin Lee with Ten years after... Don't get me wrong as there were plenty of Great Rock Guitarist back when. Keith has been and always be my #1 Favorite Guitarist.... Rock on Keith!!!
a good riff is always better than shredding !! Keef is an iconic treasure !!
What a great intro into his technique--so honest and soulful. Yet, how offensive to have used a robot to narrate this. A slap in the face of the honesty and integrity that Richards stands for.
Wasn't Brian Jones also the founding member AND gave the band the name?
Quoting Wikipedia here: "After he founded the Rolling Stones as a British blues outfit in 1962 and gave the band its name, Jones's fellow band members Keith Richards and Mick Jagger began to take over the band's musical direction, especially after they became a successful songwriting team."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Jones
We need to start thinking about the kind of world we want to leave to Keith Richards
So simple,but so good.
Yeah, I'm sure when I was 13 and heard, "Satisfaction," for the first time that set me solidly on the highway to hell. I was captivated by Keith's work on, "Beggar's Banquet," so diverse. He and Mick wrote 350+ songs. I call him the Riffmeister. How he comes up with these basic but compulsive riffs is beyond me. 60-year fan.
Keith, Ry Cooder, JJ Cale, David Gilmour, BB King, John Lee Hooker etc.
Without them life would be less enjoyable.
As a kid played Stones Story and London Years on an almost daily basis.
Took me a while to figure that Love in Vain was a Robert Johnson cover 😅.
Authentic creator of great music…..🎸
Best treatise on the Joys of Open G Tuning (Sans 6th string) in the whole World - TY 😃
Rock´n´Rolling Stones Power Forever!!!!!!!!!!!! Porra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well done video. I'm a life long fan of Keith. I own 2 copies of "Life" .I've read them both. The music is awesome. Some ask "What is your favorite Stones song?" That depends on the moment. Each one fits a moment exactly.
Played in a band in 64,Play in a band now. He is THE inspiration❤️🎸🤘
I'm been an amateur songwriter a while now. He is so underestimated. He makes Mike Jaggar's sound like he has a great voice. He does it without a pedal board and cranks out hits.
The Riffmaster
Coolest man in Rock and Roll.
Keef, master of the right hand. Gimme blood, sweat, and soul any day over a virtuoso. ❤
Keith is the greatest rock guitarist to ever live.
Great story - Thanks !
Thank you too! Glad you like it! 🙌🎶✨💕
Феноменально, я в восторге от ' The Rolling stones ' и Кейта Ричардса !!! 🇬🇧👅🎸🥁🎹
Yes, those open tunings. Just like Joni Mitchell did with her great songs. Her and Keith are on the same plane. But at different levels.
Super fucking impressive and inspiring!
Exactly & I'm kinda stunned by Jimmy Fallon, he can do Mick, wow!!
The legend,,.....❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍
Keith tunes his guitar down to open G and then puts the capo and can pretty much just strum the strings. Smart guitar player.
