      Sure you will! Learning home-improvement skills will literally save you thousands and thousands of dollars in your future. And it's incredibly satisfying. My family bought a house for just under $16,000 dollars. Our teen sons had the skills to improve the house (drywalling, painting, demolition, putting windows in, insulation, plumbing...etc.) because their dad taught them. Currently we are working on the front porch, which would probably be a $5-10,000 job, if we had to hire people. I encourage you to keep on learning!

    Found your video while trying to figure out how to fill in the old doorway. I have an old stone house and for some reason an old owner decided to board up the original doorway (with a lovely stone arch) and put a new (cheap Terrill door which didn’t shut right and let the wind, rain and snow in) doorway in cutting out the original stone. I had a new door put into the original spot, which now looks amazing) but what to do with the old door before cold weather. I can’t get a carpenter/handyman (they are in such high demand) for months. So, I googled how to fill I. The doorway and found this great video. I think I can do it myself (hope, anyway) and think this video was so helpful and informative. Now I just need to figure out what to do about the stone work on the outside.

    Hi Shannon, I have an opening in the living room. I want to install a door. The remaining openings will be fitted to the drywall.
    The wooden frame in the opening has been covered by material as used on the outside surface of drywall ( I don't know how to call this kind of material--sorry) . this is a finished opening. Should I remove these materials before installing a door? Will it be hold well if I put the door directly onto the drywall material?
    In addition, this opening height is 80 10/16 in. The door I bought is 80in. Door+Jamb is 82in. What is the standard thickness of this kind of cover material? If I remove the those material, the opening will have more height and I do have to cut the door?

    • @HouseImprovements

      If there is hardwood right to the exterior (really there should not be) but if there is cut it back before installing the plate.

    • @MrLozts
      @MrLozts 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. It's not an exterior door I'm wanting to close; I should have mentioned that. We opened the wall between our kitchen and the living room so the old cased opening to the kitchen isn't needed so we want to close it up so we can redo our kitchen and add more cabinets where that cased opening is now. If it's an interior wall, does that make a difference? I've read that leaving the floor under is OK but wanted to check with someone more knowledgeable. Obviously removing the floor where the bottom plate will go will be more work but I'm not afraid of that if it's the proper way of doing it to avoid future issues with the floor and/or wall.
      The other option I thought of was just "floating" the bottom plate a half inch or so above the floor and attaching it to the existing studs on either side with either pocket hole screws or framing nails. I thought maybe that would be OK since I assume this isn't really structural so much as it is giving us something to attach the new drywall to since there is already a header above this cased opening so the bottom plate shouldn't be carrying any load. This way we don't destroy the floor underneath in case we or a future home owner decides to take the wall back down. Is that another possible option or another bad idea on my part? TIA!

    Is that code in Canada? I've filled in an interior doorway and except for the soul plate, I didn't double up the sides (yours were triple with the extra jack studs). You couldn't have just put the soul plate down and cut your up rights to nail directly into the header? Or at least a top plate so you wouldn't be side nailing into the header. Good video and a good job.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  10 років тому

      it is not code ,I like to be sure that I have a good nailing surface all around the opening, especially out side in this case the outer sheathing was only 3/8 so its pretty flimsy.

  • @caycejeanes7463

    • @HouseImprovements

      I would have to cut back the old drywall and exterior plywood to expose enough framing wood to attach the new drywall patch and the exterior plywood patch to. Adding more lumber just makes the process easier and quicker.
