How-To DIY- Removing an existing interior door and sealing the opening with drywall

- In this video, I demonstrate how I removed a door in a Day Spa to reduce the sound into a treatment room from the product area. I used solid panel insulation, expandable foam sealant and sheet rock. I also demonstrate how to float out cracks, smooth and texture drywall. The sand added to the drywall mud helps it sip off the drywall knife. It's how my father taught me, so try it or attempt your drywall texture without it. Either way, you will learn what you like or don't like! ENJOY!

Thanks for sharing this......I really loved the fact that you showed every step! I'm a new homeowner for an old house (1959); and the previous owner turned 2 bedrooms into 1 and the layout is terrible. There's a door to the bathroom from the bedroom, but just outside the bedroom door is the main door to the same bathroom. What a waste! I can't use the wall in the bedroom because of that door....so now that I've seen exactly how to do it......I feel more confident into tackling this project! Thanks again!!! :)

This is a perfect video description for my needs. i own a spa and need to enclose 2 doorways and soundproof. My question for you is fiberglass tape versus paper. Please clarify using one versus the other. The fiberglass seems so much easier than the tape . Why not use just fiberglass. Please advise. I'm not sure if I have the courage to do this but if I figure I can hire someone if I don't succeed. I've done some basic carpentry Yikes.!! Thanks in advance for the infol

Just a question for you. How come you didn’t put a vertical 2x4 stud in the middle of the doorway to give more support to the drywall? I am from Canada where we call Sheetrock drywall.
Perhaps fire blocking is not code in his area that is what the vertical studs withing the stud bay is for.
Great tutorial! But I'm a bit clueless about why the need to "texture" and put sand in? Was the original wall textured? Or is this just something that helps the whole process? I'm a looking to enclose a door on a wall that seems pretty smooth to me.

Hi, so I am removing an unwanted door. The walls are plasters it's an old two-family home. I have a good understanding of what to do. But I just want to know can I use Chirac to close that door?? Or do I have to use plasterboard??

So the first panel is just fit into place without really being attached to anything?
That would have been nice to know.. I don't know how he fit that panel in, and also why he didn't just frame it with 2x4 studs and insulate it regularly.

Hi Monica, sorry for the late response. You can do both, the easy way would be nail or screw a 2x4 to the floor and then install the 2x4 studs. Some contractors would cut out the flooring so that the 2x4 is in-line with the two sides but it's not necessary. Hope that helped. Prolly finished already anyway, more vids coming soon, take care.
Mike, I can't thank you enough for this video. I to filled in a door but have a door sized indaent because the drywall wasn't as thick as the lathe and plaster. I'm going to float it in BUT, the wall has been painted and left like that for a few years. Do I need any prep work on a smooth painted surface before floating out the indent? I have to do the same thing. I have a question. What if the floor is concrete? How do I install the bottom 2x4 on the concrete?
Home Depot sells a nail gun, manual one to shoot a nail through the 2b4 into the concrete.
6mm masonry bit, then use a masonry screw

I would glue it down with silicone or liquid nails, and nail or screw it to the sides on and angle, so you'd have to put the side timbers in before the bottom 2x4..but I'm not an expert so..lol

A whole load of messing about aswell if you ask me mate. Just frame it , insulate it, board it, tape joins and skim it with plaster mate and take off the edges and blend it it’s not rocket science , what a mess about that was it hurt my head lol
