I have an 2016 Edge Titanium and WOW this vehicle is amazing. I bought it used and was not sure how good it would be. Well, I am pleasantly surprised! It’s been very reliable and has plenty of power to get me down the road quick. The ride is quiet and well planted. It takes turns really well and does not wallow or lean. Way to go Ford!!
We've had a 2013 Edge for almost 9 years now. It's been a comfortable and dependable vehicle. We got a Palisade last year as our family is outgrowing the Edge for longer trips, but we're finding the Edge is still getting driven plenty around town. I thought Ford was discontinuing it, glad to hear they're bringing it back for another generation.
I bet Ford has been really reluctant to redesign this vehicle because it’s been one of their best cash cows. It has conservative styling and does an adequate job of just about everything. LOTS of people enjoy vehicles like that. I must not be the only one who thinks so, because the roads are full of these things.
haha same! I worked at Enterprise when this generation came out. It was miles better than the first gen but it’s grown extremely stagnant. There’s a new Edge L (I think it’s called) in China and it looks quite nice. But I’ve heard they’re discontinuing the model altogether in our market.
We have owned two Edges, a 2007 and now a 2019. The Edge has not been redesigned since 2015 accounting for some of the "aging" changes Alex mentions. However, it still is a fun car to drive and has attributes Alex mentions, wider more roomy cabin, good storage area, comfortable seats and ride, precise steering, great in snowy situations with the AWD, excellent head room and rear leg and head room. I don't think the U.S. is going to get the new Edge version that is being shown in China. The Edge factory in Ontario, Canada is being converted to a new EV. Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, says that he thinks the Escape and Edge are "commodity" cars and that Ford will only go with bigger vehicles. It is disappointing that Ford is ceding yet another area of the auto market to other manufacturers. What a mistake. If I had to make suggestions to Ford for the Edge I would suggest they improve the interior material quality ( a perennial complaint that every car magazine review says about Ford products. You would think that Ford would read the same reviews and make appropriate changes), raise the rear hatch (as Alex mentions), get rid of the foot rest next to the brake pedal (it just gets in the way) and update the interior overall looks. Consumer Reports recommends the Edge, one of the few products getting their endorsement. The only reliability problem we have had after 4 years and 40,000 miles is a failed AC compressor. The car was out of the 36,000 mile, 3 year warranty but to Fords credit they helped us out and we only had to pay $200. They also then added on an extended warranty plan without charge. In a time when I wonder about manufacturers and how they treat customers I was impressed with Ford's Customer Relations department. Good for them.
I like the foot rest in my Ford truck. There's nothing else I need to do with my left foot and it's out of the way. Maybe in the Edge it is closer though as your footwell is smaller.
I am sure Ford will have a edge replacement in store. It will be either made in China or Mexico. They won't get rid of the escape and the edge. They sell to well to do so. But yes Ford thinks they can rid of the edge and maybe the escape and just have explorers and broncos. Very silly move. Pretty soon they will only be making Explorers and F-150s. I have news for Ford. All their cars are commodity cars. They're not a luxury brand. They make commodity cars for people who need affordable cars.
If It Works, Don't Change It, Always The Same Comments, Needs Updating, New Infotainment, More Technology To Disconnect The Driver From Their Surroundings. This Vehicle The Way It Is, Works For Many People!
The Edge was the best damn company car I ever had. Still shocked that my company opted to get these instead of what our competitors were giving their employees: Altima, Malibus, Escapes. However due to inflation and rumors that the Edge is being discontinued, our fleet is going back to Escapes :(
Very surprised to still see Edge in the market without any major changes. The instrument cluster looks decades old and the infotainment screen looks like a cheap aftermarket.
@@igeekone We've been expecting a replacement for the past four years... still waiting. I guess Ford has placed too much emphasis (and $$$$) towards EVs to afford upgrading the Edge.
I like the Edge!! I test drove a couple last year and really liked the ride and power of the V6. I wish there were more mid-size SUV's to choose from. My sister had the Kia Sorento and had a lot of trouble with it!! I like the RAV4 but it's too small for me!! Thanks for the real world type video!!! Was interesting to me!! AoA and TFL are the top reviewers!! Keep it up!!!
For about the same price as a new edge, I'd personally buy a slightly used nautilus instead with the 2.7. The interior is significantly better than the edge imo
I've got a 2014 edge with the sport appearance pkg and I love it! I will admit that after 2014 the edges lost their edge because the design lost something and resembled other vehicles in my opinion. Still looks good, just lost it's identity a little from the 2011-2014 design!
This video felt like “hey, we have an hour to kill before our flight, let me pull over do a quick review and then we can write off our whole vacation!” Ha ha. Love the channel!
This Edge review surprised me. I had to look for when the video was posted as I thought it was an April Fools joke. This car desperately needs a refresh.
Funny enough I had a loaner Ford Edge Titanium from my Toyota dealership today (rental company also was Hertz) while getting my 2019 Rav4 hybrids serviced. On the pro side I loved the pano sunroof and strong acceleration when asked. On the con side driver legroom was shockingly poor (I'm 6 feet tall, short torso, longer legs). Less leg room then my Rav4 (which Toyota's are notorious for less legroom). Also noticed lots of cheap plastic inside and very large tablet style infotainment with lack of physical buttons was a huge distraction (safety risk).
I have just Purchased for Lease a 24 Escape Active (Base) and has Several features that are in Higher end Models of other makes! I did order the Tech 1 Package which features the 13.2 Info Screen which I truly Love. The Adaptive Cruise with Auto Lane Centering Makes it Semi Autonomous, is not Available on other Higher End Vehicles which Makes it Very Relaxing to drive. It also Makes you aware of other drivers that cannot hold a Proper lane!! It features Forward & Back Sliding rear seats that Recline and Are Very Comfortable!!
I wouldn't hold my breath on anything amazing from Ford for a 2024 Edge. Oakville is shutting down and retooling for 2025 EV other than Edge. Dealers I have spoken to are 50 50 on whether they will actually see 2024s. IMHO Edge was always underrated. Sweet spot size and value with decent ride and drivetrain.
I did the same trip last year in AZ and the rental company gave me a Lincoln Nautilus, the Edge's corporate cousin. It was a great road trip car. Had 40,000 miles and needed new brakes (and rotors) but otherwise it was easy to drive and comfortable.
Thanks Alex! I drove an Edge a few weeks ago while in AZ as well. I thought it was comfortable but the engine did seem to struggle at times - don’t know the year or engine size but it did have wireless Apple CarPlay which I really liked. I was just getting ready to get a Subaru Outback Touring XT but then learned that they removed the acoustic glass!! Subaru seems to keep finding ways to prevent me from buying their vehicles in recent years (have owned 2 in the past). Anyway, the search continues…
Thank you for your very comprehensive review. When you do these reviews I would like to to include a reliability history on the auto in question. The car might be A+ in every other area but if it's unreliable, it is worthless to me. Thank again!
I remember when it came out in that awesome orange and pioneered the panoramic sunroof. I've always suggested it to people but the Santa Fe really is just nicer.
I’ve been in a 2020 Titanium for a few days and thought it was slick looking. While it is super intriguing I think that’s where my interest stops. At least it’s handsome. Oh and a used Edge is around $25k. That’s pretty nice in this insane market.
Ford has a compelling set of new vehicles they have launched overseas. I'm not sure why they refuse to bring products like the Territory, Puma, Evos, and others to the states. It really boggles my mind that Ford has not been more open about future products because I couldn't recommend anything other than their trucks and the Bronco to anyone. Their SUVs are absolutely behind the curve.
As an Escape owner the Edge is an all around good car. Its more spacious where it counts, pretty decently powerful, and great fuel economy. These can be had as absolute bargains used, and SEL and Titanium are both pretty feature laden. I like the styling, and you can get things like cooled seats not available in Escapes. I could easily drive one of these all day and be comfortable, it will be sad to see this gen go.
I had a Ford Edge 2019 SEL AWD build in Canada, the AWD failed on me at just 5,470 miles and 1 year 5 months of owning the car. The differential had to be replaced (under warranty) and it was in the dealership for a month. Again the AWD failed with a message in the dash "AWD Malfunction Service Required" exactly after 1 year and 10 months at 12,825 miles. The differential had to be replaced again (under the extended warranty that I purchased) so I ended up selling it, because couldn't afford to spend over $1K every two years that it decides to break.
I rode in and drove my grandma’s previous year Ford Edge, and I will say I was pleasantly surprised. Smooth, quiet ride. Roomy for all us adults compared to my brother’s Escape where it feels like like a car pretending to be an SUV (with the exception of course being larger cargo volume compared to a trunk).
I would hardly call slapping a giant tablet in the middle an interior refresh. Ford was just being lazy and cheap and wanted to milk a bit more profit out of this generation of Edge. Totally not worth the price tag unless you get huge dealer discounts.
@@borregoimages8117 And how is that relevant? Did people not complain about the Sequoia being ancient? Completely out of date vehicles that should have been redesigned 5 years ago that they didn’t bother because they were flying off the lots regardless.
I did look at the Edge when I started shopping (ended up with a 2020 Ford Escape with $8k discount). I wonder if the Ford Everest--redesigned along with the new Ranger, which is coming to the US--would work as a re-badged Edge? You can do an Everest with a 2-row instead of a 3-row, and it does sit on the same Ford Ranger chassis.
@@BTC909 Catch cans serve a variety of purposes, one being helping to address carbon build up on DI engines. However, they are also helpful for preventing the blowback common in turbocharged engines from damaging the quality of the engine oil over time.
Thanks for this review Alex - I've always had my eye on the Edge, but I've always known (probably from one of your older reviews!) about the reduced torque in lower gears (to prevent shredding the transmission) and hence only average performance. I thought cooler temperatures = denser air = more air into the intake manifold = better performance? I'm not sure I understand why the cooler temperatures lead to worse fuel economy? Can you explain?
Colder air is more dense, meaning there'll be a greater amount of aerodynamic drag. Though at the same time, cold dense air will allow for better performance from a forced induction engine.
Hi Alex love your car show I am from Ontario , I have a 2017 Ford Edge and have transmission problems, will never buy a Ford ever again, even after calling the engineer at Ford headquarters thy still aren t sure of the problem.
How would you compare this to the Honda Passport? Seems to me like the most direct competitor, as well as the Murano (in terms of ICE only FWD based AWD midsized crossovers from mainstream brands -- quite the funnel I know😂)
I reviewed the Edge ST on my channel. I did not like the outdated looks and the performance was not great. Not a bad vehicle but there is nothing that excites me about it at all.
Had a 2011 Edge Sport and was a very nice SUV…don’t know why Ford needs the Edge anymore. The Explorer has fit that niche without the cost of keeping the Edge around. The instrument cluster is exactly the same…12 years later. WTF Ford!
But it’s only for China and it became a three row called Edge L on most trims which would be too similar to Explorer so it will be discontinued in the US but the Nautilus may still be imported
I just rented a 2023 Edge Titanium and drove it from NJ to OH and it was okay. Nothing exceptional and for a Titanium to lack any lane center system or ACC was a bit of a bummer to me. Otherwise the 12’ infotainment from the Mach-E and the pano-roof were solid additions
Imo, this is the class of car that EVs perfectly replace. Comparing gas-powered midsized crossovers to EV midsized crossovers and you get the same range, performance, and capability for similar prices. As EVs move up or down the size categories they become way more expensive comparatively and a lot less practical (ie: less towing on big trucks/suvs and less range on small cars). I suspect Nissan thought the same way which is why we get the Aryia instead of a new Murano, and with the Maxima getting discontinued I bet the Murano is close behind since they're platform brothers. That might be an edge for the Edge if buyers are looking for a gas-powered midsized crossover this might end up being one of the last options.
I've rented many Ford Edges over the past 10 years for business and personal use - probably racked up over 3k miles in them. They've steadily improved a good amount over the years, but, they still have some showstopper issues with them that I'm surprised Alex didn't mention. The "A" pillar is way too big (helluva blind spot), you sit sorta off center in the driver's seat, and I never liked how the height of the front edge of the driver's seat remains stationary (can't be lowered) while the rest of the seat can be adjusted all over the place. It was on the short list when my family bought a vehicle back in '21, but our '22 Outback XT won out. We're very happy with our choice.
@Kevin I believe there 5 or so recalls on the Edge ranging from the brake booster to a possible faulty torque converter. I see your point, I just wouldn’t risk it.
We've had an Edge since 2013 and a Sorento since 2019. They are both good vehicles; but the Ford sure does rattle a lot more than the Kia. You also have a more car like interior in the Kia than the Ford, which for its size is actually pretty cramped on the inside. The US isn't apparently getting the new model available in China as the 2024 US Model is identical to the 2023 model, which was identical to the 2022 model.
I've always despised the instrument cluster in Ford Edges. And I see they have not changed. A 4 year old could come up with a better design in 5 minutes. Give me a friggin break. It has not changed in 15 years. Ford is phoning that in. And the price is ridiculous. The rest of it is just decent and the one bright spot is the 12 inch touch screen. Nothing else has changed. Try harder Ford.
Agreed. They should have stuck with the previous screen. It seems that the larger the screen, the slower the performance of the infotainment system. Otherwise Ford has/has (?) one of the best infotainment systems.
I don't understand why you didn't mention the Blazer. That's a more direct competitor to this vehicle than a GC. Anywho I like these enough, but I preferred the pre-refresh design. I'd rather have a gently used 16 Edge Sport than the new one.
@Brian Lee Plenty of Mitsu's sitting at the transmission shops, too. The ONLY CVT that seems to work is the Subie, but I don't think it's a selling point.
Anonymous, all-round performers are my type. We considered the Edge in 2016, but my wife informed me that she would divorce me if I made her drive another Ford :(. She had PTSD from a decade in a Windstar. :)
Has Ford lost its Edge? In this model year one could argue yes. Hopefully the refresh will bring a RWD based AWD plug in Hybrid with a heat pump and 34 miles of EV range that’s geared towards fuel economy. Refresh the cabin and revamp the instrument and infotainment gear and they will complete very well especially if they add premium materials in an upper trim.
I rented a 2022 Ford Edge (basically a clone of this) for about a week... man, I can tell you I was thoroughly UNIMPRESSED. It felt sluggish compared to other vehicles I've driven recently... it handled about like a whale, the interior just screamed "Outdated", and man... does the interior feel cheep and plasticy. The infotainment screen was a real distraction... 99.9% of the competition uses a black back-lit screen, while this uses a WHITE back-lit screen... who does that? Try using this at night, even when "dimmed" it's a huge distraction. On the plus side, it is "functional" as a good sized family hauler. There is plenty of room inside for front, rear and cargo capacity... but man... it's just feels so cheap and outdated on the inside. IMHO this is also overpriced for what you get... look at a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe... He's like "its' cheaper but you don't get as much"... okay, well if you start loading up the Santa Fe to the same price-point of an Edge, it comes with MORE features and a lot more quality, up-to-date interior with a lot more tech. As a rental I was basically "take this or nothing", it worked for a few days, but there's no way on this Earth I'd fork over my own money for this monstrosity. If I was in the market for an SUV of this size and price, i'd take the Santa Fe, nicely loaded in a heartbeat! A Santa Fe Calligraphy starts at 42K... there's no way a 42K Edge can compete with it.
The Edge seems a bit pricy. For $58K one can even get a German option like the BMW X3 with a decent amount of options and a lot more fun to drive (and less plastic-y).
I'd say it's the Lexus RX that started this 2 row midsized crossover segment in 1998. Then the Highlander in 2001, and the Nissan Murano in 2003. Also, there are rumors that 2023 is the last year for the Edge in the US.
The final Edge rolled out of the Oakville plant in Ontario Canada and was never built in China. As far as the Lincoln version made now in China? Don’t want a car built by the enemy and wouldn’t have one.

11:30 I'm curious as to why you don't mention the Toyota Venza. It's got essentially the same power but better fuel economy, let alone styling.
Hi Alex love your car show I am from Ontario , I have a 2017 Ford Edge and have transmission problems, will never buy a Ford ever again, even after calling the engineer at Ford headquarters thy still aren t sure of the problem.
I have a 2021 edge titanium with the elite package.
How would you compare this to the Honda Passport? Seems to me like the most direct competitor, as well as the Murano (in terms of ICE only FWD based AWD midsized crossovers from mainstream brands -- quite the funnel I know😂)
From the front, it looks like someone took the Ford Fusion, and force fed it burgers for a year.
The Mercury/Lincoln version should be epic !
So the 3.5 is no longer available? Wife had a 2011 Edge 1 of the best cars we ever owned. Son has a 22 with the 4 cyl and he's very happy with it
The got rid of the 3.5 in 2018
My 2017 ford edge looks almost the same inside. (Except because the huge tablet in the center)
I reviewed the Edge ST on my channel. I did not like the outdated looks and the performance was not great. Not a bad vehicle but there is nothing that excites me about it at all.
Sante Fe or Edge? Which is more interest8ng to drive?
Had a 2011 Edge Sport and was a very nice SUV…don’t know why Ford needs the Edge anymore. The Explorer has fit that niche without the cost of keeping the Edge around. The instrument cluster is exactly the same…12 years later. WTF Ford!
So, they are not killing off the edge? Leased an ST back in 2020 - all around great car. Not sure if I would purchase one though
2024 Edge? Rumor has it that Ford is dropping it's 2-row crossovers. Please tell me the rumors are wrong.
Can't wait for the redesign, this thing is showing it's age bad.
But it’s only for China and it became a three row called Edge L on most trims which would be too similar to Explorer so it will be discontinued in the US but the Nautilus may still be imported
*its (yes, I'm that obnoxious 😅)
I hope Ford makes an EV equivalent to the edge. I believe the Blazer Ev is currently the only upcoming option at this size at a decent price.
When did they update the dashboard, again? 😉
Isn't it being discontinued in the USA? I thought it was going to be a China-only model now.
Yes it’s dead in the USA
I for one, like that they did not do the fuggley front end redesign that they put on the Escape.
By now I thought the Edge would have the 2.3L Ecoboost, but I'm surprised to see such decent performance with the 2.0L Ecoboost.
They should add a electric motor/batteries and make a PHEV version of this.
The Edge & the Murano are the oldest platforms in this category
The interior room is good. However, the real world fuel economy is not that great. Also, this is really outdated as it is.
They still make these?😳
Alex, After watching this on-the-fly review, I will seriously consider a Ford Edge if I ever need a rental car in Arizona. 😉
With Ford’s ongoing quality issues if you get one, find a good extended warranty.
@Kevin I believe there 5 or so recalls on the Edge ranging from the brake booster to a possible faulty torque converter. I see your point, I just wouldn’t risk it.
@Kevin long live the PowerShit transmission! lol
@Kevin I've never driven any vehicle with a DCT that I didn't hate. It's the DCT that is killing Kia Sorento and Hyundai sales.
Time to fire the UAW, huh? All the problems seem to be build issues.
Close to the Edge of disappearing while driving. So Fusion at the front ...... And Fusion inside .
Not thank you .
The big screen came in 2021 I have it in mine very unstable
Ah the Ford Edge, the official car of "average".
They still make this thing?
I like this car I rented the older version I’d probably never buy one thought
How tall is Alex? I'm over 6' 3"
I've always despised the instrument cluster in Ford Edges.
I'm more interested in the Santa Fe hybrid
that screen looks way too aftermarket for me.
It can't compare to Mazda CX90 (and price is simular) but how does it compare to Ford Explorer ?
Glad Ford is finally (slowly but surely) getting away from that incredibly dated gauge cluster. I'm a big ford fan and I'm so over it!
I'd get the Murano for the CD player.
Its 1 of the top selling crossovers so not hardly
For an AWD hire car to flog around Bozeman it will do nicely.
Ford have to restyle Edge. It looks so outdated.
*"The finest $200.00 US Dollars you'll ever spend!"* sad but true.
My cousin had a 2016 one and it rode like crap and had issues at 60k miles. Only had it for a year
I rented a 2022 Ford Edge (basically a clone of this) for about a week... man, I can tell you I was thoroughly UNIMPRESSED.
I had one, bad quality and Ford refused to stand behind it
Sure they did.
Can it tow? Not really.
I want to like the Edge, but it's more money for something that just doesn't offer much more than an Escape.
Except for a lot more interior space. That space may or may not be of interest to you, but it will be to a lot of potential buyers.
Not sold in Sweden any more.
has the 2024 Edge replacement become a China-only offering?
The final Edge rolled out of the Oakville plant in Ontario Canada and was never built in China. As far as the Lincoln version made now in China? Don’t want a car built by the enemy and wouldn’t have one.
