    This is an excellent demo of the Ford Edge. But, I get a kick out of how Ford puts a positive spin on the lack of a printed owner manual. • @CarsWithSteve

      Never said that one could be purchased from Ford... it's straight up not available for most Ford/Lincoln vehicles that feature the Sync4 screen
      If you're looking in the Sync4 screen or online, there is a section for breaking in the vehicle under Driving Hints. Tires are 300 miles (480km) and limiting hard use of brakes/clutch is 100 miles (160km) on city streets or 1000 miles (1,600 km) on highways

    I'm only interested in 2wd vehicles. Have no need for fuel-wasting awd or 4wd vehicles. So immediately hearing the fwd is no longer offered, I'm looking elsewhere now for my next vehicle.
    Dealers need to stop pushing the awd packages on customers, I blame dealers more for this than I do Ford. Vehicle prices are too high, and vehicles with awd are the highest priced. The market is set to come crashing down with interest rates rising soon. But you won't have good looking lower priced fwd vehicles to sell.

      The FWD Edge has an EPA rating of 24 mpg combined or 4.2 gals/100 miles compared to 23 mpg combined or 4.3 gals/100 miles.
      The difference to the pocketbook with these numbers when filling up is negligible. Having said that the Edge is looking like it's out the door before the 2024 model as Ford retools the factory for EV production

    • @rayrussell6258
      @rayrussell6258 2 роки тому

      @@CarsWithSteveYou are forgetting "your mileage may vary"; and that's a fact, since I ALWAYS exceed the EPA average in my driving.
      You make an assumption that the market will switch 100% to EV; gas engines will sell alongside electrics for a LONG time; Ford and the other companies only promise to have electrics available; they have NOT said they will discontinue gas powertrains.
      Once the general public finds out for themselves how inconvenient EV's are in real use, resistance will grow just like people are now growing tired of all these OTHER government mandates.
      I am very knowledgeable about automotive history, and EV's were the market leaders in the US for about 10 years back in 1900-1910, when the market woke up to the disadvantages and inconveniences and shortcomings of electrics, and almost overnight gas-engines took over the market. EV companies went bankrupt and disappeared. It's going to happen again here in 10 years. People don't really change when you look at long-term behavior, this fad will be over, and the auto companies will need to have gas powertrains ready for that.
      The "greens" political power will fizzle, the free market will return.

    • @CarsWithSteve
      @CarsWithSteve  2 роки тому +1

      @@rayrussell6258 Mileage may vary is true.. but that works for both FWD and AWD. I've never noticed a huge difference in fuel usage in cars that I've driven but now I'm going to have to test that
      I think we'll see the switch to EV in our lifetime. EV tech is only getting better. Look at where it was 10 years ago. The EV's of the 1900's weren't much performance wise though. The Detroit Electric had a range of 70 miles and top speed of 25 mph.. which was great at the time but not at all practical today.
      There are some newer advancements in electricity storage and new lithium compounds that'll extend the range even more. If gas prices keep going the way they are it'll just be a matter of when

    • @rayrussell6258
      @rayrussell6258 2 роки тому

      @@CarsWithSteve The advances you speak of are tremendously expensive to produce, and not at all practical in mass-production. Much of what you read is actually theoretical also, which is useless in production.
      (Detroit Electric was not the EV leader back in the earlier period, btw. The leader was headquartered in Connecticut, simply called Electric Vehicle Company, according to historical reference books I have.
      In 10 years, they went from leader to "out of business".)
      But electrics still can't compare in range versus gas engines even with what they're doing now.
      If the electric can't get 400-450 miles out of a battery charge, it's not good enough to me when I can get that out of pretty much any gas vehicle sold up to now. I don't have time to look for charging stations, or wait a half hour or more for a recharge. Takes less than 10 minutes for me to refill my gas tank.
      The environmental impact of EV's will be found to be neutral to negative, if the market gets to steady state. Instead of using carbon directly in the vehicle, carbon will be used in power plants and indirectly used in vehicles as recharging. Pollution will continue, just as before. Much of the carbon used in power plants will be wasted, because the electricity moving over power lines and through charging equipment has losses along the way. It's actually better, from a physical science standpoint, to always use energy directly in a product, not indirectly. You may have heard that electric lawn tools are recommended only used with short extension cords, not long ones, because the long ones can burn out the electric motor because of losses in transmission. That's applicable in a way anecdotally in the whole recharging network that will be needed in the US if the market goes to EV. Power plants will have problems maintaining a strong pulse of power over long distances, and customers will experience problems with their equipment. People don't really understand all the details of what will happen, they are too trusting in opinion leaders, politicians and news media. In ten years, they will learn their lesson and the fad will be over, similar to the fizzled minivan craze. They'll want gas back, for the same reasons gas took over from electrics around 1910. Gasoline is more convenient.
      I think you misunderstand my "your mileage may vary" remark. If you look back a couple model years ago, there was a 10% or so penalty (2 or 3 mpg, I think it was 27 versus 30) on highway mileage between the AWD and FWD Edge. Somehow, that difference evaporated as Ford planned the elimination of FWD, to raise the $4K revenue bump for AWD and get it across the entire Edge production, by making it seem there was no real difference between the 2 axles in mileage. I saw a similar thing happen when manual transmissions were phased out for 100% automatics a few years ago on small cars. Suddenly, automatics that lagged manuals by 4 or 5 mpg were suddenly getting 1 mpg MORE than manuals. Trickery if you ask me, although I'm not suggesting anything was done illegally.
      I test drove Escapes before I bought my 2020 Edge. There was a 2 mpg difference between FWD and AWD on that vehicle (they were 2019's). I could not compare the Edge that way because the dealer had neither Edge in inventory, but going by weight I figured it would be that 2 or 3 mpg difference. For my 40K annual miles of driving, that 2 or 3 mpg is significant. even 1 mpg is, truthfully, especially at $4/gallon some places. I only drove the FWD package I eventually bought later via a dealer trade. I'm happy with it, and I AVERAGE the highway mpg rating in my driving, not the EPA label average.
      If the FWD Edge is now gone as you reported, you will have a tough time doing a comparison. But the added weight of AWD tells me the mileage would have to vary. I think both packages used the same axle ratio.

    • @CarsWithSteve
      @CarsWithSteve  2 роки тому

      Expensive to produce today but so were cars in general before the assembly line - tech is theory until there's a practical application for its use. Never said DE was the market leader but even the cars from Electric Vehicle Company had their faults. EVC's idea of battery swapping stations vs recharge was an interesting idea but they expanded too quickly.
      The Lucid Air Dream has an EPA estimate of 500+ miles and Tesla S is 400+ and it's improving every year as battery storage improves. There will be people that can't stand the idea of having to wait 30 mins for a charge but at the same time if the car is getting even 300 miles between a quick charge - that's 5 hours of driving. I'd want to stretch my legs at that point and would welcome a 20-30 min break. Agree with you 100% on the environmental impact - it's the same for gas and electric. Lithium production does terrible things to the environment as does oil production. Check out Sono Motors and Aptera - early in their EV journey but they utilize solar panels to help improve range and charge as you drive. More forward thinking like this is what will change the EV market.
      The FWD vs AWD and manual vs auto transmission mileage is interesting. I don't think it's VW emissions scandal worthy, more likely improvements in automatic transmissions. But having said that there is the argument of the effectiveness of the auto start/stop system that a number of manufacturers utilize and the impact that has on EPA mileage numbers. There are a number of dealers in my area so the plan is to get behind the wheel of a 2021 if I can find one FWD to put it to the test!
