      bystander affect.
please take the time to familiarize yourself with psychology (abnormal, social, forensic) when commenting on criminal cases.
it's pathetic every time there was a witness of some form, people jump onto them for not acting. it comes from a place of ignorance about basic human behaviour, and such a useless waste of a discussion.
everyone assumes they'd act perfectly in situations like this, but chances are most don't.
we don't know what they specifically heard. screaming isn't universal. how were they screaming? was it loud, or muffled? were they saying anything? etc. this is why certain witness testimonies are unreliable. because each individuals has a different perception on a situation, memories are malleable, etc. There's an episode of Brain Games if you'd like to learn more, without being bored to death (I think it's aimed towards kids, but the experiments hold up).

Had a "friend" move in with him and one night things got out of hand and the "friend" beat the shit out of my brother, stomped his head, stabbed him a few times, tried to slash his throat, chased him up and down the halls of the apartment while cutting him. Nobody even called the cops while he was banging on doors and being actively killed in the process. Thankfully my brother was drunk as shit and somehow survived it all. i heard a dude beating up his girl in the apartment next to me and called the cops cause it clearly ended up being really physical instead of the typical arguing and yelling. another time, in a different complex, i heard slow banging outside my door (ended up being him trying to kick the door down) and i didnt go out and look, just out my peep hole, and then i heard a girl screaming bloody murder and i saw them literally both run past my peep hole. then i heard a guy yell " get in here" to the girl and THEN apparently there were cops already at the complex for a burglary and i heard them yell get down and then a bunch of bullets! guy ended up having gun and they shot and killed him... hindsight 20/20 i can definitely understand people maybe not wanting to also get stabbed/shot etc in these kind of situations.. if i would have went out and checked on the banging i could have easily got shot if i tried to intervene... BUT do you know if they at least called the cops?? what ended up happening to the "friend"??

Once after a big screaming match I saw the guy carrying plastic sheeting to his apartment, and then I heard the vacuum. I called the apartment office, explained, and they went right away to check. Everyone was okay but the guy had basically overturned their dining table and made a huge mess which they were cleaning. I try to avoid cops at all costs because I don't want to be the reason someone gets executed by them. But I always listen close. At the end of the day she is a free adult and she chooses to stay, calling the police over and over is just going to make them not take her seriously if something serious was happening. At most they would have listened to what sounded like a one sided argument with women screaming at someone which is what one of the neighbors said it sounded like. When he started this shit if she had a high pain tolerance and legitimately nigh up breaking will she would have stayed conscious for at best 40 minutes to a hours. It’s easy for the mind to rationalize that. She would have spent the majority of those hours in and out of consciousness from the blood loss and pain.

The police should have kicked the door down right away because as a mother of 4 children, I know what it feels like physically to be away from your newborn baby especially if breastfeeding. Every inch of her body would be reminding her that half of her was with her mother crying, scared and needing to be fed. Not to mention that she had to be extremely tired and in pain from her c-section. I am so saddened that he raped her in that state and I wish we could go back in time and at least stopped her from going over there. Ok, I’ve watched this beast of a story several times now, trying to blunt the horrific nature of this murder. It hasn’t worked. This is such a powerfully disturbing case. It’s not just what he did to her, it’s the fact that she lived through eight hours of the worst kind of torture and brutality. It’s entirely too convenient to just declare Blake Leibel “insane” and let the horror pass under that declaration. Was he insane? No, probably not. Did he know what he was doing was wrong? Yes, it certainly appears that he did, what with his repeated claims that she wasn’t in the apartment to police attempting a wellness check on the poor woman, barricading himself inside the apartment and within the apartment, into the bedroom with her body. He ordered food while he was torturing the poor woman. He made an attempt to clean the apartment, to tidy up evidence of what he’d done. The absolute depravity of his crimes against this poor woman prove only that he was a monstrous animal, not that he was in any way insane at the time of his crimes. At every step, he behaved like a privileged cocksucker, showing absolutely no remorse for what he was doing. The wounds he inflicted on this still living woman are the stuff of nightmares. So, again, damn dude. This is, in my humble opinion, the single most disturbing story you’ve told. I’m done trying to mitigate the horror of this story by repeatedly watching it. Blake Leibel is a depraved animal. He represents the absolute worst of man’s inhumanity to man. The phrase “the banality of evil” says everything about this case. So terribly, awfully sorry for her mother and family for what could have been at least interrupted had any of Leibel’s neighbors, who heard a woman screaming repeatedly during her ordeal, done ANYTHING. Almost as disturbing as Leibel’s crimes, his neighbors’ unwillingness to contact authorities stand as monstrous witness to the inhumanity of Man.

They actually just assume someone else must have called, and/or there's a more benign explanation ("music" - though this one blows my mind. I mean, sure there's some wild music that exists but maybe just take the chance the screaming isn't and call the cops).

As a mother, I know during that horrific 8 hour ordeal, her mind was on her child and she was surely screaming for help so she could have her baby back in her arms. That’s why she fought for so long; to survive and be reunited with her most precious possession. So sad to see the victims own mother doing the same thing, longing for her own baby to be back safe in her arms, yet being ignored by the authorities. Why did no one call the police to investigate what they must have been hearing? And why was the only person who was calling for help (the victims own mother) ignored for days? This is gut wrenching.

I am a Christian so it’s taught all our worldly “possessions” (people included) are not guaranteed, they are given and can be taken away. Reading it back, I can see how that may sound off to some though! You could call the victims child her most precious “thing” in the world, but kind of the same issue there. Replacing possession for human or person doesn’t work as well because a mother would choose her child over all else- anything riches can possibly buy…. On that note, I think possession is maybe the best choice of words wether one is religious or not haha! I stand by it, but I can see where you’re coming from.
