great Video :) adressing the problem at 12:40 this happens cause the glow is on a 3d layer which can intersect with the ground plane/map. to fix it u could do the following: create a new solid with the effect "calculations". It basically reffereces and composites another layer u select onto it. So if u refference ur Rocket shape layer ("Copy" as the blending mode to get the transparency) and apply the glow after the calcutlations instead of on the original shape layer, its not possible for the glow to intersect anything at all cause its just in 2d space. U can then just hide the original shape layer. advantage of this technique is that it wont affect any other layers below it, like an adjustment layer would. hope this helped :)
Thanks! Will do! Yeah I was super happy with how this one turned out. Struggled quite a bit initially with the Trace Paths in 3D. Thanks again for the nice comment.
If you add an adjustment layer under your Rocket layer, that will take care of the glow intersecting the world map (getting cut off). That somehow breaks 3d layer order. can't explain it but I've escaped many 3d jams that way.
Thank you for this very cool tutorial. I love all of them. Great work! To avoid this intersecting problem you can try this: Add an empty adjustment-layer between the rocket-layer and the layer with the worldmap. As long as you don't need any interaction between the rocket and the worldmap (for example a dropshadow on the worldmap or obstruction) this will be the solution. Because adjustment layers inside the stack of layer create a kind of stop of calculation. So all layers above this adjustment-layer are treated like a sperate compotsition and the layers below the adjustment-layer too. So the the rocket won't disappear behind the earthmap, even it is behind the earhtmap from the coordinats. And this could be an issue sometimes. But the glow from the rocket won't be cut away with this workaround. For the case that already somebody named this workaround, sorry and please forget it, because I didn't read all the comments.
This is so useful. I've been doing this manually for plane travel paths and the result always suffers. This is flawless. The mask on the world is also a cleaver trick too. Thanks man.
@@BooneLovesVideo if i’m honest, i wasn’t actually doing what you have in a 3d space. I was manually key-framing layers to get a close to that as possible. Out of interest, how could i anchor both end of the path? I typically create plane paths that have an exact start and end point
Fiz deu tudo certo. Uma dica para quem tem o After em Português, é que na parte onde você precisa colocar o Deep Glow, escolhe Brilho e tenta deixar parecido com o preset dele.
Hey at 12:48 you are saying that layers are intersecting with eachother so I think the workaround is to create an adjustment layer, between the two layers. Just an empty adjustment layer.
I'd like to put a challenge out there for you: Remake this graphic (or it could be in a new style) in GEOlayers and create a 3D arch path where both points (start and end) are pinned to the map. Bonus points if you can build this in a way where you can reposition the two pins/points and it doesn't totally destroy the arch. If you attempt this, I'll make a video with my original and refined process. I'd love to see someone else's approach to this, especially someone who works with GEOlayers often. Backstory to this: Recently, I had a freelance project that dealt with this particular challenge... and on top of that I decided to torture my PC a bit and make it a 3D terrain map (which introduced so many other variables/issues I had to deal with). The "bonus points" part of this challenge is the real kicker, I didn't solve that problem until my project was already wrapped and I still think there are plenty of ways to approach this challenge. My original process had me rebuilding the 3D arch everytime I needed a new city-to-city.
Dude, I LOVE this challenge idea. I've spent so much time playing around with Paths to Nulls, I'm about to lose my mind. I definitely 100% accept this challenge, good sir. And that's so funny that you didn't solve the problem until after the project was wrapped. I've had the same thing happen so many times.
@@BooneLovesVideo I know this is 2+ years on, but did you solve this? I have wondered if it were possible to connect a path to two nulls (start and end) and have not found an answer. (Granted, I just started researching yesterday...)
Great Video! Don't know if anyone else had problems with this but if switching from "tocomp" to "toWorld" doesn't work. You have to have a capital W on the World. Haha took me awhile but now know capitals are important in expressions!!
"Just change 'comp' to 'world'...why? I don't know." I will send my clients who b**ch about hourly mograph fees to this tutorial + time code.... Bravo, good sir.
Thanks a lot for you fantastic Tutorials and help! I have question and I hope get the answer, or maybe you would make tutorial about it! With Universal Maps Downloader software you could download high quality different Map , We can use them for motion graphics? or They need special license? I know to use in App etc. you use connection between mobile and server and ..... , but for motion graphics what it the rule? Thank you :)
Have you done the Indiana Jones type of map where during the beginning of the movie, the plane is flying from point A to B to C ? Would like to see a tutorial about that.
Hi, this has so many great tips, thanks! I'm late to the party, here and ran into an issue. When I make the layers 3D, as soon as I rotate the path it's as if there is a light affecting everything and my path and rocket get dark. This doesn't happen in your version...the rocket and path stay bright white even when you rotate. I don't think I missed a step and didn't add any lighting, so I'm not sure what's going on. Anybody know what's happening? Maybe AE works differently now in the 2025 version?
OK, I just figured it out...my composition defaulted to the new "advanced 3d" renderer, which changes a bunch of stuff. Switching it back to "classic 3d" solved the problem. Posting in case anyone else runs into this. So many "gotchas" when you're following all but the most recent tutorials!

Just add an adjustment layer between the 3d layers you do not want to cut.
This will break the 3d intersection.
