I remember this game. It was my 16th birthday, which was one of the worst birthdays I've ever had, with Gary's injury being the icing on the cake. Thankfully, Carter was back after a stint on the 15-day DL, and was able to contribute to the Mets' NLCS and WS wins.
It's interesting how Joe Torre of the Cardinals was the last out which helped the Mets clinch the eastern division and how Davey Johnson of the Orioles was the last out of the 1969 Series and both managed the Mets.
This is the Lee Mazzilli welcome back home run game. “ There’s a drive off my Mazzilli’s bat gone Lee Mazzilli and they love him even more at Shea Stadium now”
Kind of a rare appearance at Shea Stadium for the team of Costas & Kubek. One possible reason was if the Tigers-Red Sox game was the "other" game being televised that Scully & Garagiola (Scully in particular because he did that Dodgers local broadcasts & interleague play was about a decade off ) mayve wanted to be "scouting" the Red Sox considering they'd be a possible World Series team (which they were & had a big lead in 1st place at this time) and they'd be televising the Series that year.
There definitely weren't many. The other ones I can think of were the 9/21/85 Pirates-Mets game when Gooden homered and 6/4/88 cubs-Mets game when Kevin McReynolds ended the game with a homer. You're right though, the Costas-Kubek team was a rarity for Shea.
@@8644mec 9/12/87 I recall they did a Cardinals at Mets game there. They rocked Dwight Gooden for 5 in the top of the 1st & cruised. Then unbeaten Terry Leach got some reps in a mop up role. Im guessing since Costas would host the season premiere of NFL Live (in NY) the next day, would be the reason for this assignment. Costas DID do aome playoff games (w/ Joe Morgan) there a decade later.
The problem with Gooden at this point was not only drugs but the Mets pitching coach Mel Stottlemeyer. He messed with Goodens delivery and as result his fastball lost it's movement. He was still throwing as hard as ever but his fastball was straight That is why he never came close to his 1985 effectiveness. Doc was meant to be a power pitcher not a ground ball one. They should have left Doc's mechanics alone.
Agree, but also read he was injured before spring training that year and his motion was altered a bit. Also throwing more cut fastballs and trying not to tip pitches took away from that natural drive to plate and whip motion.
You guys got some Met Games from 2008 that include the SNY Booth? Whatever game you guys have from that year that includes Gary, Ron and Keith won't matter.

1:17:30 man I had forgotten how often Tony Kubek would check the F outta Bob Costas there's 3 or 4 similar exchanges in this broadcast alone

Doc rockin’ the curl. 💪🏽

Boston had a 4 game lead at this time, wasn’t a big lead at all

Such beautiful memories. At 01:40:06, that swing by LaValliere was one of the most elegant I've ever seen. You've got to watch it.
I was at this game!
Lee Mazzilli's homer @ 2:08:12 was shown on the "Let's Go Mets!" music video VHS tape. :)
Horrible strike called to end the game. Straw had a right to be angry.

True. When you have the kind of season Doc had at age 20, you leave him the fuck alone.
He was trying too hard to make him into less of POWER pitcher and more of a contact type pitcher.

Games from a year that they choked?
