  • The night began with the Cardinals having blown a 10-1/2 game lead in the NL East Division over the New York Mets and starting a three-game series at Shea with just a 1-1/2 game margin. It would end with Terry Pendleton the hero (go to 2:30:00 for the big moment).

26:30 he mentions HoJo being a stock investor and says it's been a bull market. Little did anyone know 1 month and 8 days later the market would drop TWENTY-TWO percent in ONE day.

Even if the Mets win they were so short on pitching and then would lose Darling. I don't even know if they'd have won the East having to play St Louis for 3 last weekend of season

I remember watching this game and thinking that StL was going to fall apart because Darling was unhittable that night. The Cardinals had just lost three in a row to the Expos, and the race in the East was on. Then Terry P. moved up in the box and caught that McDowell sinker, and I think, at that moment, it was the Mets that folded up like a cheap lawn chair and never recovered that season.

Both teams were supposed to be dynasties but neither became one. The Cardinals won 2 Pennets in 85' and 87' while the Mets won a World Championship and a division title in 86' and 88'. I miss the way the divisions used to be. This was by far the best rivalry in my opinion. As a life long Mets fan, I miss these days. I'll never forget the games these 2 great teams played from 85-88. It was a great time to be young and watch baseball at it's best.

If the Cards and Cubs were in the NL West instead of the Reds and Braves, the Cards/Mets NLCSs would've been must-see

@@robertosso5210 No one is talking about 1982. I said from 85 thru 88 when they were both good teams. The cards won 2 NL Pennants. The Mets won 1 NL Pennant & a world series, The Mets also finished in 2nd place in 85, 87, the Cardinals finished in 4th & 5th place in 86 & 88 so your argument is wrong because If it was under the current rules, the Mets would have made the postseason as a wild card team from 85-90, the Cardinals only had those 2 seasons during that time period. Once the Mets had Hernandez & Carter from 85 on, it's not even close.

Great to see Jay Randolph and Mike Shannon. Mike always called him "Jennings" Randolph.

Next to Game 7 in 2006, this is the one Mets loss I never got over. Even 2015 didn't hurt this much.

As a Cards fan I felt the same way when we lost to you guys in 5 games in the 2000 NLCS. You guys were def the better team in 2006. We got lucky. From a cardinals fan.

What is it with those two run homers. Pendelton, Sciocia the following year, and Spezio with that triple....still bitter.

@@charliebobandas6794 '06 and '00 were NOT the same as 87. The Mets-Cardinals rivalry was far deeper in the 80s...they were division rivals..It starts with Whitey Herzog being with the Mets, then Hernandez being shipped out of St. Louis to the then worst team in the N.L, but the Mets were up and coming. Then the last series of the year in '85, Strawberry hits the scoreboard in St. Louis, Gooden wins the next night but the Mets come up a game short in the final game. Mets win 108 and win it all in '86, and in '87 Mets had a lot of injuries early but almost caught St. Louis. Jack Clark was injured (BUT even as a METS fan Jack Clack in '87 was EPIC. That whole Cardinals team was epic), and the Mets were one out away from reclaiming what was theirs. But then Pendleton...... This game doesn't get talked about much anymore but it's among the worst losses in Mets history

'88 was worse...11-1 vs the Dodgers during the regular season and Scoiscia hits a 9th inning HR against Gooden. Then Gibson hits one in a later game.

This was my 9th birthday and as a young Cards fan, this was a great birthday present! These Mets were like the Chicago Bears during this time because both were supposed to be dynasties for years to come and neither one could do it again.

Exactly halfway between 9/11/73 (US overthrows Allende government in Chile, leading to a decade of political murders and so forth) and 9/11/01 (you know what).
In honesty, not as awful as either of those. But tell it to me at the time…
Darling, going for the first Mets no-hitter ever. Gooden going tomorrow afternoon. Mets in first place by Saturday night.
Reality: Pendleton. Doc gets bombed. Mets 3.5 games back on Saturday night. Title defense over. (Especially as Ronnie broke his thumb.)
To quote Joe Schultz: "Ah, Shitfuck."

      Most distressing HRs:
      5) Reggie Jackson (1973)
      4) Yadier Molina (2006)
      3).Alex Gordon (2015)
I was at that game. Still don't believe that went out, to CF no less. It was so wet and humid that balls that sounded like *much* harder blasts didn't even make the warning track.
      2) Conor F*cking Gillaspie. Are you f*cking sh*tting me??? (2016)
      1) Pendleton. A grand total of *ONE* HR all season, before this. Sigh
