I'm a long time Mets fan, and I've always felt that Buckner wasn't the goat of the game. The real monkey wrench for the Bosox was Bob Stanley who's wild pitch set up the play. Frankly, even if Buckner fields the ball, I don't think it would've ended the inning. Mookie had good speed and I think he would've made it to first. I doubt Knight would score. But it would have Knight at third with HoJo coming to bat. And Stanley still on the mound.

I asked my father if we were going to leave early? He told me no, at least we’ll be able to see a team win the World Series live. He was trying to make me feel better, which I didn’t know at the time. All I remember was the amazing Mets making an unbelievable comeback, and people were running back into Shea stadium to see it. I remember after the game, driving through queens with my dad, and everyone was outside going nuts. One of the best memories I e ever seen in sports, and I got to share it with my father.

What he omitted, and may not have known, is that his father, as a season ticket, or package plan holder, had the option to buy post season tickets before the remainder were released to the public. Full season ticket holders could buy tickets for all the home games, a maximum of 7, which, in this case, all got played. Package plan holders, like me, could buy half the games. Bob Ojeda. Such a sad story. For those who don’t know, here’s what happened. after the 1992 season, he signed with the Indians. They were in spring training in March of 1993 and him and two other pitchers, Steve Olin and Tim Crews went on a boat ride in a lake near crews’ home. Crews was the captain and was drunk at the time. The boat rammed into a pier and killed Crews and Olin. Ojeda was injured and the sole survivor but didn’t play until late in the season and was never the same. He retired after the 1994 season. Very sad
This incident actually got some laws changed in Florida. This accident happened at dark. The pier/dock had no lights, and was a good distance out on the water. While there was no question Crews was drunk, if the dock had lights, this may never have happened! Now all docks that are a certain length out on the water have to have lights!
khamjaninja fun fact: after that the cub’s gold glove shortstop dropped a tailor made double play ball that would have ended the inning. It was a perfect hop, a dream groundball that he just dropped
RIP Bill Buckner. I read a couple days after his passing that he was actually a very good contact hitter who almost never struck out. It's a shame that he'll never be remembered for anything else but this.
I watched this because I wanted to see who he was, and what his error was- seeing the news that he passed. Everyone needs someone to blame - sad. Very sad. It’s the entire game, a team as a whole, from start to finish.
Also, before the series began, Buckner was asked about fears in the World Series by reporters and he openly said letting a ground ball go between this legs. Hmm! Interesting to point out there. Id love to see a rewinder on the 1980s US-USSR hockey game, but I dont think that game was symbolized by a single moment in the game, but rather by Al Michaels' legendary "Do you believe in Miracles?! YES!!!" call (which holy smokes I cant believe he's still broadcasting, what a legend). I feel the 72 Summit goal by Paul Henderson was more of a fantastic sports moment in terms of actual hockey goals.
Not only that but Schiraldi and Mitchell played together on a Mets farm club in Virginia and Mitchell claims he knew exactly what Schiraldi's next pitch would be. Got cut for length but this is what the comments are for
It was Stanley's wild pitch that changed everything. Mets were a team of destiny in 86. Momentum shifted after the score was tied and there was no way they were going to lose. RIP Bill from a lifetime Mets fan. U were one the greats
Bill had a 20+ year career playing big league ball. That speaks for itself. Many guys don't see a career one third of that length. Had the Sox bullpen taken care of things prior to, his moment of infamy never happens. Had they not blown it again in Game 7, it would barely be remembered.
3:12 - so there's actually an upload of that charity game, in full, here on UA-cam, and so I looked to see if I could find this play; and it turns out that despite what multiple news reports have said about the game, Buckner actually *was not* the first baseman in that incident. Buckner did play in that game, he got on base in his second of two token at-bats in the 3rd and was replaced by Pat Dodson, a rookie who would make his _official_ Major League debut the next day against Minnesota, as a pinch runner. Dodson was the one who committed the error in the 4th, not Buckner.
What’s interesting about Clemens is that he claims he never wanted to get taken out of the game while McNamara says Clemens wants out after getting an envelope tear on his finger

I wonder what would have happened/crowd reaction from Shea stadium would have been if Tom Seaver actually came out in a Red Sox uniform during the 86 series.
As a Mets fan and a Seaver fan it would of been heartbreaking. I actually went to his 300 victory game in the hated yankee stadium. I been his fan since his early days as a Met. They would not boo him for sure. Politely hopping he would not win or lose any games.
As a Mets fan who saw this Series as a kid, obviously I love re-watching it (what else is there to watch lol). But the level of depth that you just presented here gives everything a real paradigm shift. I mean, I've read 'The Bad Guys Won', and maybe it's HOW you presented things, but every single detail--from the season's beginning until this game--seem to connect, and it's fascinating. Really well done, and I'll look for more from you guys in the future!
I feel bad for anyone who witnessed the 1986 World Series and being so close , but didn’t live to see the 2004 World Series. The amazing feeling for Sox fans after 86 years can’t be described to anyone who didn’t care.
@@Karmy. They obviously took their cue from the Chicago Bears' "Super Bowl Shuffle" which was recorded under similarly ridiculous circumstances, the morning following their only loss of the season in Miami.

Buckner handled this moment--one that unfairly and inaccurately characterized his career--with incredible grace and humility. He continued to play for Boston, and, at least to my knowledge, never said a cross word about the team or Boston fans. There is so much to be learned from his example. As a Mets fan, I love that we have two Championships, albeit none in my lifetime, but I hate that it is framed so frequently through this single error rather than the factors that created the situation.

Buckner was a .289 lifetime hitter, won a batting title, and had over 2,700 hits in his career. He deserved to be remembered for more than just that play in the World Series. R.I.P.
Fun fact, Keith Hernandez watched the entire comeback after he made the second out, from Davy Johnson's office tv. While watching it, they started their comeback, and Keith did not want to move, in fact he didn't want anybody in the room to move as there were others in there with him, but Kevin Mitchell had to leave as he was pinch-hitting. He did not want to jinx the comeback. He did not even go out onto the field after they won. Baseball players are very very superstitious. He told whole story on the Rich Eisen show. It's pretty funny.

Then of course, there's the Jets fans. Gotta love how there's so many levels of misery.
@@billny33 born in 83 and fan of Mets, Jets, Knicks, and Islanders, Tough break, this one is actually the last ring these combo of teams won, I wish I were alive in 1969, both the Mets an the Jets won that year, both big time underdogs I might add .
This video series never fails to give me goosebumps after I hear "welcome to a moment in history".
I’m a Mets fan, but I was in Boston, actually Fenway park on Memorial Day seeing a Red Sox game when Bill Buckner died.
R.I.P Bill Buckner
Very sad
Alexander Gilles was Charles Nagy involved in that too?
lgerback34 no but he was on the team at the time. The only ones involved were those three
Shades of the Marlins ace Jose Fernandez
This incident actually got some laws changed in Florida. This accident happened at dark. The pier/dock had no lights, and was a good distance out on the water. While there was no question Crews was drunk, if the dock had lights, this may never have happened! Now all docks that are a certain length out on the water have to have lights!
Please do one for the Steve Bartman incident
What happened with Steve Bartman?
(I don't know much about baseball lol)
The 30 for 30 film Catching Hell covered both Bartman and Buckner due to the response both got from the media, definitely worth checking it out
The Bartman incident is made famous for the hit barrage that ensued after. Its kind of not appropriate for a series known as Rewinder
khamjaninja fun fact: after that the cub’s gold glove shortstop dropped a tailor made double play ball that would have ended the inning. It was a perfect hop, a dream groundball that he just dropped

RIP Bill Buckner. I read a couple days after his passing that he was actually a very good contact hitter who almost never struck out. It's a shame that he'll never be remembered for anything else but this.
You mean he will only be remembered for costing his team a World Series ? Darn
I'm from Chicago so have only good memories of Bill Buckner!
I watched this because I wanted to see who he was, and what his error was- seeing the news that he passed.
Everyone needs someone to blame - sad. Very sad. It’s the entire game, a team as a whole, from start to finish.
I'm related to the Mets, my great uncle is Hobie Landrith who was their first pick in the 1961 Expansion Draft :)
Also, before the series began, Buckner was asked about fears in the World Series by reporters and he openly said letting a ground ball go between this legs. Hmm! Interesting to point out there. Another great video of Rewinder.

Robert MacIntosh Mike Eruzione’s goal could be that one moment because it led to a 4-3 lead. But yeah, that’s a tough one to think of.
what about the Minneapolis Miracle?
poukid sun might be one soon
I have been waiting for this one BIG TIME!
Vin Scullys call on this will forever be one of the greatest calls in sports history.
Joshua Jimenez debatable.
Nah there's probably a Joe Buck call or 2 out there that was better.

up there with when the impossible happened
“It gets through Buckner” gives me absolute chills, as does every single rewinder I’ve watched when the moment comes. Great job hyping it up!
How could you not reference the story that Mitchell was naked in the locker room booking a flight home when he found out he had to pinch hit?
Not only that but Schiraldi and Mitchell played together on a Mets farm club in Virginia and Mitchell claims he knew exactly what Schiraldi's next pitch would be. Got cut for length but this is what the comments are for
@@SecretBaseSBN Didn't know that, that's awesome! Love all your guys' work, especially Rewinder and Beef History.

I heard Keith refute that. Has was in the clubhouse but he was fully dressed
excellent job the way you told this story. just amazing
It was Stanley's wild pitch that changed everything. Mets were a team of destiny in 86. Momentum shifted after the score was tied and there was no way they were going to lose. RIP Bill from a lifetime Mets fan. U were one the greats
One of the greats ? Hahahaha
Yes! Tried to reference this at 5:30 but as it all came out after the fact, it's hard to know what really happened at The Moment.
You don't take Roger Clemons out of a game with a chance to win the World Series. You just don't do it.
@@SecretBaseSBN if you ask me, I believe McNamara. Clemens wasn't the most truthful guy let's be honest....

Bob Stanley's wild pitch that let the tying run come in ruined the game more so then Buckner's error.
There are rumors that it was a spitter and crossed up Gedman.
Baffling that John McNamara allowed Calvin Schiraldi hit in the 10th with Don Baylor available on the bench. Equally incredible is that he managed in Boston for another two seasons.
Well he did get to them world series and within 1 strike of winning it all so why not have him continue as manager!

I love how these videos get you excited about a sport you don’t even need to follow, and you always learn so much!! Also, great humor and editing!
It's a good thing the Sox managed to break the curse, otherwise Rewinder would be the stuff of nightmares for me between this and the Boone walkoff.
between the tuck rule game changing the pats fate in 02, the 0-3 comeback big papi walk off changing the sox fate in 04, and the dramatic pj brown of all peoples jumper late propelling the c's past the cavs by 4 in 08 and the Nathan Horton ot gw goal in game 7 vs the canadiens in 2011 , their collective sports mindset could be a lot more depressing with no titles if not for these special moments in time that changed the flow of the franchises...otherwise we may still look at boston in general as cursed losers...its funny how luck changed their fate in these circumstances ...you can say if not for those single plays in each sport none of their 11 combined pro titles since 02 at least 1 in every sport would happen...and you may be right

I'm amazed the Red Sox allowed a man named Mookie on the team. Glad they did.

The soundtrack is the reason I watch this videos
Gotta admit it's great
Mets fan here😁☝️....and I remember this team. It was awesome to follow them all year long and it was the highlight of my baseball watching career!!😆😆
Well, that was painful. But it made 2004 much sweeter, including 0-3 comeback vs our nemesis.
I was a Mets fan when this happened and my heart broke for Buckner.....still does.

The Red Sox manager should of kept Roger Clemens in the game and they would of won the World Series.

We got to see Matteau from 1994!!! It would be a terrific choice.
Game 6 against the devils that year was just as iconic
The controversial OT goal by Bob Nystrom in the 1980 Stanley Cup finals.
Yes to this, big time!
Fetisov of the Devils plays it cross-ice, into the far corner. Matteau swoops in to intercept. Matteau behind the net, swings it in front. Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! Stephane Matteau! And the RANGERS have ONE MORE hill to climb baby, but it's Mount Vancouver! The RANGERS are headed to the final!!!
When Knight is dancing towards home and puts his hands on back of helmet like he could hardly believe it, what a moment.
Besides Jon Bois, this is easily my favorite SB Nation series
Jon Bois is GOD II.
I think the rewond guys are Yankee fans, or hatahs. Come on lets se a rewind of 2004 Alcs. lost to unpack, Arod trade, Schilling's injury, slap play, etc.

As a yankee fan I can’t be happy about this cause the Mets won but it’s sweet that the Red Sox lost
The Red Sox aren't my favorite team, as a Giants fan. But damn have I loved watching the dodgers blow it two years in a row
