cool video! i love my schrenckii, i’ve had retics as well but schrenckiis are just so curious and always up for a bit of handling. they’re quite probably the friendliest species i’ve ever had. i had to have him get used to being handled though, as he would always “shock” the whole time as i handled him. this went away in time. i feel like that’s something important to tell, because i was freaking out but the breeder said they get over it. :)
yeah you totally saying it wrong)) I live in a region where this snake is common, I even got a couple in my garden. It is the longest snake in our region. In my opinion most pretty one too. Its easy to keep, very chill, hardy non fussy snake.

At first, I paused the video thinking it was my cat. Then my dogs were watching intently thinking there was a cat in my TV. Lol.
Im glad you mentioned the brumation thing! I brumate my garters for breeding and I always throw in my russian rats in there too for their health. If I dont they usually barely eat anything in the winter anyways and their appetite wont pick back up until warmer weather

So I'm thinking about getting one of these guys as a first snake. When setting up the enclosure I see a lot of people use fake plants - can you use any fake plants like dollar store or craft store decor for that or do you have to get pet store fake plants?
As a Koran it is weird to hear “Korean rat snakes” cuz black ones are more common here in Korea, we have brown ones , black ones and wild hybrids too but, black ones are the most common in here. And I love both of them so much and kinda funny that these rat snakes are so expensive in here usually goes for 1000usd for a CB and it is illegal to have them too
I have Russians and four lined snakes, Russians are very confident. They dgaf about anything. Only snakes I've had out of the egg that never musk or bite. They have zero prey drive, it's pretty awesome to see. I don't brumate. Russian seem to just shut down for a couple months, pretty much brumate themselves. Don't eat, staying on the cool side for a few months a year. Korean rats are harder to come by, finding a normal is exceedingly difficult. Albinos seem to be fairly common.
one thing I've seen /heard is the comments about brumation, but not a lot on how someone with one or few snakes does brumation in an apartment or places where they don' t have a separate room to lower temps, or where, for example, an apartment has controlled minimum temperatures. as it seems it's essential for many species,I'm curious how others accomplish 60 degrees or lower in an enclosure. are there significant downsides to not providing lower temperatures, but just following the animal's lead on seasonal food refusal/reduction?
Many people with limited room use a wine cooler. Some animals it is required for longevity such as rubber boas. I’m not sure about Russian rats but I know many animals that do not have a “true brumation” that easily make it into their 20s
I have a pair of high yellow Russians and they are hands down my favorites of most of the new and old worlds that I have kept.

I keep my bedroom cool anyway, i sleep better that way. Just leave your window open a little all the time and add blankets.
