Enjoyed every second of this gem! Genesis never ceases to amaze and satisfy me! Thanks for watching!! 🥰
The live version is even better
From 3 Sides Live?
@@retroreactions.... Exactly
@@retroreactions.... Except for very few exceptions, everything that is live from Genesis is better, and that means a lot, because what they did in the studio is supreme.
Originally, these two songs were from a four song suite called the " Dodo Suite ", but two of them were dropped from the album, and showed up as B sides to singles( the other songs were called " Naminanu " and " Submarine ". You can find the versions of the four together here on UA-cam by searching " Genesis Dodo Suite ". The best song from this album(IMHO) though is " Me And Sarah Jane ".
Yes, still pretty proggy here, Phil's singing is spot on, as usual.
Hey Michael! Thanks for being early and first comment! 🥇 Thanks for the info. I have to hear the full suite and I will add MASJ to the list! Have a great day/night
@@retroreactions.... Please add my vote for MASJ. 😉
DONE! 😉
Agree re me and Sarah jane
Imo the most pleasant part from this album. This album sounded very inovative at that time despite not being their best. I still love the "big sound" they had. This was way better than lots of other productions of that period.
Makes sense...Thanks
Simply amazing stuff from the Great Genesis 💫☝️❤️ thanks for the reaction Brandon ☝️
Like you found not so popular Genesis songs ... now you will find why this band is number one of the world.
Love this song and all the Genesis songs I've heard, thanks!
Really underrated gem there. Me And Sara Jane is another song from Abacab that is sneaky one of the best Genesis songs too.
Thanks Brian, adding your vote!
What 's not to like!?
Take a listen to this song from live album Three sides live! 😉
So much TO like! OK I will thanks
@@retroreactions.... Also... The song Abacab from their album Three sides live, is, IMHO, the ultimate version of that song! Wow.. 😱🔥🔥🔥
@@retroreactions.... I was going to recommend that live version myself.
@Håkan Berglund I was going to recommend that live version myself.
Your vote added!! Thanks
Four different album covers from the same design.....love it. Also love the Reggae groove they drop into and Phil's deep dark voice. A song about extinction? Sure why, not. It's Genesis.
Genesis said they wanted to do something more 'abstract' with this album. Not sure what that means, but Mike has his best guitar solos on the title cut.....especially the LIVE version. Makes me want to shake him and say MORE! They really rock and almost sound as if they are jammin' live.
Which version of Abacab live do you prefer, 3SL or The Invisible Touch concert from Wembley? They're both phenomenal, I'm just curious to see what others think.
@@ianfortier6796 They are both dynamite! Rockin' Fire.
Partnering with Hugh Padgham worked VERY well for our three British lads. The production became much crisper + louder, especially those drums. Lovely "Bonham-esque" bass drum.
Nice comparison....so I have Hugh to thank....🙂
Saw them live many times in the 80’s in Philly. No one could touch their live act. Phil introduced this as old song from our new album. Amazing live. Holy crap!!!
So cool!!
Me too. Spectrum, JFK and Veterans Stadium.
Gone are the fairy tales, here come the 80's! Although I can't deny I prefer their older material, I have to admit the energy the band displays from the 80's on is admirable for a mere threesome. Phil is on fire here, as well as Tony. As for Mike (unassuming, quiet Mike), his bass playing has always been such a solid anchor to the band's music, not to mention the fact he can churn up some quite catchy tunes himself. Glad you enjoyed this track, Brandon. Keep them coming: your reactions are always a pleasure to watch!🐝
Thanks! Oh Genesis will keep on a comin on this channel for a loooooooong time!! ☺
@@retroreactions.... 👍
Great! Listening to this after ATTWT must be a great stylistic jump, 3 years later. Phil seems more confident than ever, going more and more daring experience. In fact he just committed his first solo album, that became so successful that everybody had a jaw dropping (Thanks to the multi-platinum hit "in the air tonight") 😉. On this a lot of common songs signed by the three, still on Banks song remains "Me and Sarah Jane" and also Earth Wind and fire horns, a lot of new trials. This song still got something prog in the structure, and you can feel the power feel of the band at that point.
Really glad you enjoyed it.
Such a fun track! The performance from Three Sides Live is also worth checking out 😃
Ok thanks!
Abacab is the album that follows the great Duke, it is an experimental album, very different from its predecessor. The change in style is noticeable but very interesting. Dodo/Lurker, Abacab, Me and Sara Jane, No Reply At All are some examples of this change.
Nice. Sounds like a transitional album to full 80s Genesis? Thanks so much for watching!
The answer to the Lurker riddle is a submarine, which is the final section of the suite. The drums at the end of Lurker are the same as the drums at the beginning of Submarine.
don't think we'll ever hear music produced like this today
You're right...No chance!
Not a chance in h…
My favorite off this album besides Me and Sarah Jane
Sweet! Will add your vote for MASJ, thanks for watching!
I saw them twice on this tour ; London and Cologne . They introduced the world to the Varilight system - lights that changed colour and moved. Today , you'll see it everywhere , back in '81 , you could hear the audiences gasp with unbelief at the lightshow and actually clap and cheer . It was revolutionary.
Abacab was a brave album to release , they really wanted to change things Sometimes it doesn't work but then that is subjective. Overall , Genesis took to the 80's better than other bands . And , no , it wasn't Phil trying to make the band commercial - they all went for it .
Oh and I should have added earlier, I love those tremendous blasts by Tony Banks on the keyboards. Great choice ! Glad you discovered this magical gem.
Genesis is well known for using Moog Taurus bass pedals. Usually done by Mike Rutherford, at least during live performances.
It's a great song from what I consider perhaps their most underrated album. Abacab album, minus Who Dun it?, is among my top 5 Genesis albums. So many great tracks, this being one of them
Gosh. Have not heard that since um '84? Let's call it 40 years :( oh no.... Great stuff tho!
Nice! Glad I could refresh your memory about the song! Thanks as always...
The live version of these are so much better...add to that a full set of vari...lights...the rest is history...Genesis live was something else ❤
The album Duke!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!! A very interesting version of Genesis. 🤔💛🤘🎶🎶
Hi there! I love all versions of Genesis!
Indeed... a brilliant album, 'Keep it dark' track on the same album just as funky, Genesis at their peak in 1981, followed by their album 'Invisible touch' in 1986... before Phil Collins went solo... great reactions keep it up!
Thanks so much Gordon for watching and for the comment!
I do not regard the four 80s studio albums as 'peak Genesis' Gordon, but there are glorious gems to be discovered.
Love it! A.R.P. Quadra and Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 synths fully blazing!
You are a master bro, I asked Dodo/Lurker and you did it 👏👏👏, powerfu! 👊 🤛
You will LOVE "Behind the Lines"/"Duchess"/"Guide Vocal" trilogy from Duke
Hehe, yes...your vote made it win for today! Had a feeling you'd be happy 😏
I knew you would love this Brandon and it hit you physically as well as aurally! It is such a powerful song! Not every song on this album is good IMO. However, Abacab, Me And Sarah Jane and Keep It Dark are outstanding. The latter is seldom mentioned. But it has an intriguing lyric and a somewhat bizarre time signature that is strangely compelling with synths driving the song along.
Thanks for the guidance as always my friend!
Totally agree Simon, “keep it dark” is absolutely amazing
Thanks mico, adding your vote!
Me And Sarah Jane and Keep It Dark are wildly underappreciated. Great call! There's a tonne of great music on this album, imo. Dodo/Lurker, Keep It Dark, Abacab, Me And Sarah Jane are top tier Genesis. Closely followed Man On the Corner, Another Record, and Like It Or Not. No Reply At All is okay but doesn't resonate with me. I'd have preferred they kept the 4-song suite together with Naminanu and Submarine, and leaving off Who Dunnit, and even No Reply At All, if need be. In all honesty, I think it would have fit better on Phil's Face Value or Hello I Must Be Going, regardless of who wrote it.
Thanks Ian!
Along with the title track & another of Tony's masterful compositions "Me & Sarah Jane" the best tracks on the album IMHO. The live version on "3 sides live" is phenomenal. On Abacab they changed their writing format to mostly jamming with a drum machine & achieved some great results. Cheers
Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd... I am always changing the order, cant decide.
Yes, that is a huge challenge! Thanks for watching!!
'Dukes Travels/Dukes End', is a doubler you need to try. Try to find one that leads on from one to the other without a fade mix.
Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!
Great reaction as always. Forgot how good this song is. Love Keep it Dark on this album as well.
Thank you! Glad I could rekindle your love for it!
Yes, love keep it dark and Me and Sarah Jane
I often say I prefer the Peter Gabriel/Steve Hacket era, until I actually start listening to Duke and Abacab, which, though different, still have a lot of the big-composition, huge sound elements that made their PG/SH time so great too! There's not much from Genesis that isn't drenched in talent. Someone below mentioned "Me and Sarah Jane" from this album too; definitely worth checking out. Even Invisible Touch has big songs like this: "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight," "Domino," and "The Brazilian." Thanks for taking this deep dive!
Not much is better than a Genesis deep dive!! Thanks for the suggs and for watching Michael!
yet another where the album as a whole elevates every part so much
Excited for the rest! Thanks for watching 🙂
Subscribed based on this as its among the best mid-period Genesis ❤🎉
Thanks so much for the sub and for watching Matt!
I react to Genesis weekly and plan to hear everything eventually!
Such a catalogue (we’d say here). I mean you gotta go back to Trespass. I actually like From Genesis to Revelation, their very first, and I don’t think anyone’s done that yet. My first favorite serious band as soon as I heard them aged 15 in 1985 ❤ Also there are extended versions of a lot of these songs (Dodo is part of a larger suite for example), on the Archives compilation. Have you done Duke? That’s a standout album: the one before this and better? ❤
Plan to do their entire catalog!
I'll be honest: a lot of Genesis' albums, from Abacab onward, have their moments. There are quite a number of hits and misses, as far as songs are concerned. It's gonna take more than one time listening to truly appreciate or respect what the band's created. I felt the same with Wind and Wuthering; now I love it!
I can see that. Thanks for sharing and for watching Joe!
I’ve always loved “ Dodo / Lurker. “ It’s a very strong track, giving the Abacab album some extra pizzazz.
In fact, I think it’s one of the best tracks out all the ‘80s Genesis albums.
Nice! I'll have to agree!!
Thanks for watching
Check out "Home by the Sea"
I have reacted to both already! Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/V15-e5TJKIo/v-deo.html
Another epic song Brandon!! This is my favorite track from this album, and I knew you’d like it as well. Abacab is another good song. Maybe for next week’s Genesis song I suggest “Mama”…. It’s an epic song!
He already knows Mama. Next week will be The Eleventh Earl of Mar as the start of his album reaction to W&W.
Great pick as your fave! Hopefully Abacab not too far away! I do know Mama well from The Way We Walk live album. Is the studio version pretty similar I'm guessing?
@@retroreactions.... Yes, Mama live is pretty similar. Unusually, I prefer the original album version.
Abacab, OMG sorry....still feel the same
😁
@@retroreactions.... Genesis, my favorite band. From their beginning till now. Love them.
Rick Beato's favorite Genesis song is "Ripples". I find that sweet. : )
There's one cool guy!
I think he's cool. He just released a video on the breakdown of the song "Ripples". Interesting
Can you do more of this as well as Duke? ❤
Full Duke album deep dive starting in 9 days!!
@@retroreactions.... Great. I hope I’ve not over hyped it! 😂
@@retroreactions.... Is Gates coming along soon?
Gates of Delirium you mean? Hopefully that will be the one for Yes' next turn 🙂
@@retroreactions.... Ooh. That’ll he treat for you and all fans. It’s up there with CTTE and Awaken ❤️
time for the brazilian next
Will add your vote, planning to start Wind and Wuthering next though....
@@retroreactions.... yes I want wind & wuthering too, one of my favourite albums, but that will take a long time so maybe the Brazilian first as it's just one song?
@@retroreactions.... also Duke suite is fantastic
Maybe I can squeeze it in as a bonus song in between somewhere...
From the very start of Abacab this album punches you in the ears😅 Such a great sound…Yes this album divided fans a bit…but with a new producer in Padgham (who had produced The Police) the band entered the 80s with a purpose to shake off their past and show that they were not the prog dinosaurs that the punk era critics accused them of being… The last two tracks on the album were the weaker moments for me…there were b sides that could have been better placed on there…however as a ‘whole’ the album stands up and stands out from all their previous work…not many bands were able to do this and survive…
I know I will love most or all of it 100%!
This sounds like they mailed it in. An affront to my ears.
Thanks for watching still
A song from the era when Genesis unfortunately produced more and more pop oriented music and mainstream rock. This song has at least a little more power and strength than others. But after "Wind And Wuthering" Genesis made more and more uninspired and uninteresting music. Hackett's departure after "Wind And Wuthering" album was a great loss. His little innovative riffs and guitar melodies were missing from the Genesis sound (for example "Ther´s an angel standing in the sun" from "Supper´s Ready" or the chorus from "Carpet Crawlers"). Rutherford IS not a guitarist. He can be a bit heavy, but that´s all. He plays the guitar without the emotion of a Steve Hackett As the guitar ideas started to be lacking, the Genesis sound became too keyboard-heavy. From ",,,and then there were three" Banks only pasted the pieces with his keyboards.
I guess me being much more into keyboards than guitars makes me love 80s Genesis more than some...thanks for watching though
This album was definitely very different, I have to admit it my least favourite from the band. However, Dodo/Lurker is one of the best tracks on it and was great live also.
The least-good Genesis album, up to that point.
Thanks for watching anyways...
