With, of course, honorable mention to Mr. Bruford.
It's a great performance! I'd recommend on your own time listening to all of Fly on a Windshield. This version cuts out all of the buildup, so you're hearing the climax and nothing else from the song. The transition into this climax is one of the best moments in music history.
I knew there had to be more!! Dang can't wait!! Thanks so much for the info and for watching..
@@retroreactions.... not on your own.... Please consider a reaction for it. On the album there are two songs together, Fly on a Windshield and Broadway Melody of 1974. 😉👍 The whole album is awesome but a slightly hard-to-follow story but I sense you will get it from the start.
I will be reacting to all or part of Lamb album on YT for sure, so I'll keep that in mind....thanks!
@@retroreactions.... I noticed on UA-cam an animated video of the whole album, you may like that I think 🙂
The way "Fly" comes in on the album is one of Genesis' finest moments! You'll love it when you get there 🤩
Sweeeeet thanks!
The Lamb remains my favorite Genesis album, second by Wind and Wuthering.
Nice! It must be something special....
@@retroreactions.... It is 8 But it also marked my adolescence, so maybe that's why I love it so much.
....And you were 1000% right about "Fly"!! 😊
My 2nd favorite album after The Wall
Wonderful to see Bill Bruford (who played on several great Yes records, up until Close to the Edge) and Phil Collins both drumming together at the start. Bill could take over when Phil had to do the vocal parts
Yes, enjoyed seeing Bill in action!
Carpet Crawlers is SO near and dear to my Heart since 1980.
Nice....great song!! I can see why
Yep, it’s Bill Bruford. I was at this concert in the Appollo theatre in Glasgow Scotland. I’m 66 now, still one of my greatest memories.❤
Lucky!!
Fly on a Windshield starts quiet (here it´s cut) and then it unleashes a storm. It´s one of those rare storms when you don´t wanna hide. You just let it hit you and you can´t get enough. 😀
Another planet!!!!
They have come here in 1981! This was just a .... man.
Saw this band at the Beacon Theatre in NY. Bruford was an added bonus.
On this A Trick of the Tail tour Bill Bruford played the drums together with Phil Collins
Nice...I guess Chester came on in later tours....
@@retroreactions.... yes. Bill Bruford was only part of this tour. As from 1977 Chester Thompson moved in
Got it!
@@Divedown_25 It's great to see two best 70's prog drummers play together (well I count Neil Peart for the 80')
@@Rowenband yes, but we shall not forget Billy Cobham and Lenny White. But maybe they were more fusion jazz?
My favorite album for road trips
Nice, the length certainly helps!!
As fabulous as Genesis always is live, you must hear the studio version first. The Lamb is my favorite album and if you can listen in its entirety, your life may change. Thanks for all the prog you listen to.
Yes, this is def rare that I do it this way.... Was gonna just do one of my favorites, "That's All", but I don't know if many of my viewers would like that one....
@@retroreactions.... THANKS GOD you didn't!! haha
😭😭😭
Excellent!! How about those 70's hippies, eh? LOL! Carpet Crawlers is my favorite Genesis song and among my favorite rock songs of all time. On the album it's Peter Gabriel with Phil Collins on backup vocals. It really is amazing how much Phil sounds like Peter on this song. And to think they conducted an extensive search for a new lead singer after Peter left only to come to the undeniable conclusion that he was right there under their noses the whole time playing drums. The rest as they say, is history. 👍
Love em! At least I got to wear butterfly collars and bellbottoms as a child LOL....Can't wait to hear both originals!
@@retroreactions.... Ha, lucky you. I'll be honest I'm not sure the original version is as good as this one. They're both great in their own way.
This is an excerpt from the film of live footage from a concert during the "A trick of the tail" tour with Bill Bruford filling in on drums & percussion. From memory it came out in theatres in the late 70's much like the "Yessongs" film in the early 70's. For a prog fan in Australia before VCR's in the early 80's these were the only chance to see these bands in concert. To be able to visualise some of the magnificence from "Seconds out" (although the Fly on a windshield instrumental version excerpt wasn't on the album) was a real treat back then. I hope you react to "The Lamb" it's an extraordinary album & a totally unique listening experience. Cheers
Yes, I will react to The Lamb album for sure, some way some how...
Wow, two Genesis days in a row! If you keep this up you'll be winning the 'Genesis marathon' award, he he 🙂 Glad you picked those two songs, especially the Carpet Crawlers: it's such an eerie song, full of mysterious imagery and a chorus that lulls you into a dream like state. Nice!
Hello, glad you enjoyed these songs... now I know what all the buzz is about! 🤣🐝
Can't wait to hear studio version of Carpet!
@@retroreactions.... Yes, Peter Gabriel does a good job of it too. There's also an excellent live version by Steve Hackett's group with Ray Wilson on vocals. Didn't think Wilson was such a good vocalist until I heard this one.
@@retroreactions.... Yes, a dream-like state as in 🐝zzzzzz...
Nice thanks! I def enjoyed Ray's singing..
Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a little Bible and Alice in Wonderland mixed together. It's about Saving your Brother only to find out IT'S YOU !
Deep stuff....excited for the day I hear it all.....
Great to hear the guitar being more prominent(as opposed to the studio version)
Phil wearing a tanktop was his usual attire until the 1980s
Thanks for comin back....1 more coming today phew! More prominent on which song? Oh ok, I think I saw him wear overalls once?! haha
Versace tanktop?
He also wore a lot of hockey jerseys back then. And sweatbands on his wrists.
This is so beyond, so on another level
Thanks so much for watching Crosebore!
Recorded at the Glasgow Apollo, Scotland if I am not mistaken!😜
Thanks for watching!
It was a great tour and notice Phil singing harmonies in certain spots when singing the lead. The B on Bill's shirt is for the Bruins of Boston not Bruford
Thanks for the info Les
OMG, what a nice surprise Mr. Brandon! lol
Thanks Mr! 1 more to go in about an hour!! Thanks for always stoppin by!
🥇
Very nice, thanks
You're welcome, thanks so much for watching!!
It was Bill Bruford but the B on his coverall’s was the logo of the Boston Bruins hockey team.
Haha that makes more sense, thanks Thomas!
This album The Lamb was Peter's swansong with the band. The Lamb was an incredible concept album for which he was responsible for all the lyrics. Many believed after he left it was the end for the band, but how wrong they were. The others were somewhat resentful that he controlled all the lyrics on this, and Peter said 'there are not many books written by a committee, and for good reason'. He left of course for personal reasons as well. Still this is a brilliant record, and Steve Hackett when touring still does many tracks of this live in their entirety including Carpet Crawlers and Fly On A Windshield, and not chopped up in medleys. The Carpet Crawlers was of course the final encore song Phil did in the 2007 reunion tour which I caught in Amsterdam, it was majestic. Great reaction Brandon for your appreciation of superb Prog Rock. You must listen to the album it's entirety as it flows beautifully with many tracks bleeding into each other. The Light Dies Down On Broadway which is the reprise of The Title Track The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and The Lamia is so beautiful in different arrangement, it is a stunning concept album.
Thanks for all the great info as always!
🪰 🪟 💖 You gotta get in to get out 🎶🎶🎶 Love, love, love🎶🎶♥♥♥
Deja vu! Thanks for comin back...1 more to go!!! 💙
Let's Goooooooooooooo!!!!!!
I get extra nap time after this crazy day LOL!
You have my permission. Thank you for a 3 video day. Very nice.😄
LOL YAY!!! You're welcome....that isn't gonna happen again anytime soon though haha....but we like our 2 video days!!!
Amazing version of Fly on a windshield, which is a bit longer on the album, but far more powerful and intense here. Magical Genesis as always live!
What a great couple of live ones!! I think I’ve seen both live between seeing Genesis and Steve Hackett. I’m liking the kickoff of “Live” week. Can’t wait for tomorrow.
Thank you SO much for that Dale! Glad you liked today's picks....1 more to go!
I think this is my first triple video day LOL
I wasn’t expecting another entire video! I thought that this had two songs and this was it. I hadn’t before seen live footage with Bill Bruford playing. When I saw Genesis, they had Daryl Stuermer playing bass and guitar(switching back and forth with Mike) and Chester Thompson playing drums when Phil was fronting. They both toured with Genesis for a lot of years. Daryl also played guitar on Phil’s solo albums and toured with him as well.
@@retroreactions.... triple... you became the Stephen Curry of reactions 😂
Haha, so technically it was a Fourfer!! I always thought Daryl was an original Genesis member for years haha...
There is a faboulous video on YT, Genesis Live, Paris Bataclan 1973, 16mm master in 4K. It´s so fantastic quality, seems as if it were filmed yesterday. It´s a 37 minutes long awesome stuff.
I think I've seen a bit of that one....is that where Peter becomes a Fox in a dress? LOL...if so yes STUNNING quality! Thanks for watching
Hey Brandon, the 'full' video for this gig is only about 45 mins long, so definitely worth a watch when you get time. Some of Supper's Ready is on it too 🙂
Thanks!
Brandon, you "deprived" yourself by doing live "Fly", that version was a selected bit from "Fly", (but of course, you wouldn't have known that).
You shorted yourself of the best part. Slowly it starts, exploding into incredible magnificentness. Check it out when you have time.
Good to know, I will hear the entire Lamb album at some point for sure! Thanks
I don’t understand how you never heard of these songs ….your life might change if you listen to “the album “And then There were three” .. and yes, that’s Bill Bruford ! The one and only ! ☝️ also, Listen to Blood on the Rooftop !!
Hi Lisa! Thanks so much for watching and for the comment. FYI, I have already reacted to "Blood..." and I have reacted to half of "And Then..." album so far. They are all on my Genesis playlist on my homepage if interested!
This excerpt is from the AOTT tour in 1976 in which Brufford participated, in 1977 Chester Thompson arrived for the W&W tour, which is when the greatest live album in history was recorded of the shows at the Palais des Sports from Paris, with the exception of the Cinema Show, which is an excerpt from this tour a year earlier.
About both "The Lamb..." songs, yes, the original versions of both are longer, this Fly version is just the instrumental section, and Carpet is missing Peter's wonderful intro, they only did the full 2 song versions on the last tour with Peter in 1975, but never with Phil on lead vocals.
That's the 1 thing I don't like about them...they often cut down their songs live and only include sections....not what I would do if I had famous masterpieces! Thanks for the info
@@retroreactions.... Agree, and this only happens with songs from the Gabriel era ;)
"The Lamb Album" was released live on a Box Set called "Genesis Archive 1967 - 75 from the "Shrine Auditorium in LA" . Do not think Phil and the band ever played it live start to finish.. Always in short melody form .. Parts of it suited Peters vocals more and parts of it Phil could handle really well. Carpet Crawlers is great as a stand alone song all by itself..
I have mentioned before that I saw Genesis in 1976 at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore. I was just a mere lad of 16 who had to eat a ticket when my girlfriend dumped me just before the concert. She missed a helluva show.
Her loss!! How cool to have seen them in their heyday!!
Ahhh! Saw them in April 76 at the Cleveland Music Hall. Just a teeny place.
Graduated from HS a couple Mos later. One of the best concerts ever! Brandon, you'll love the studio Fly On A Wind.
Seeing Genesis live in their heyday while being in high school? Not jealous at all!! Can't wait to hear the full studio version, thanks for watching!!!
Rutherford does play bass pedals.
Cool, what an excellent all around musician he is!
If you're considering a Lamb full album marathon, here's the link to the amazing animation by Nathaniel Barlam. Closest thing there's been to a Lamb movie 😁 ua-cam.com/video/JszTrQdL314/v-deo.html
Please don't do it with the animation. Its a fan video and It's so distracting. Music first is my recommendation..
Thanks! I did hear about that when I released my In the Cage reaction....
Please do the ending of Suppers Ready from this show🤓
Don't think Mike Rutherford ever did lead vocals, even on his solo (please have a listen to 'Smallcreeps Day') and 'Mechanics' releases! 'Carpet Crawlers' is Genesis at their very best. This would be my go to track for anyone not familiar with pre-'Invisible Touch' Genesis. As others have said; although Genesis were always a great live band they often cut some of their longer songs which is the case here with 'Fly On A Windshield'. You'll appreciate more how good the track is if listened to on the studio version, preferably straight after listening to the opening track. Thanks for your thoughtful and intelligent analysis on your reactions and I look forward to much more Genesis.
Hi Philip... I was actually told he does sing lead on some songs (apparently the entire "Acting Very Strange" album), and he sounded great on the bit I listened to! Yes, I will hear The full Lamb eventually! Thanks for the compliment and yes tons more Genesis weekly on the channel! I'm currently finishing off Wind and Wuthering....
Great to see this! Phil Collins always did an amazing job on singing the original parts by Peter Gabriel. Both these songs start part way through and ignore the opening verse(s) of the original versions. I don't know why because the beginning to both tracks is terrific. In the instrumental section of Fly, Steve's guitar is much more prominent than on the album version and better for it. It is difficult to find meaning in songs that are listened to in isolation from a concept album though. But you have now had a taste of what is in store with Fly, Crawlers and Cage. Which will tempt you first? The Lamb or The Wall?
Woohoo, glad vid 2 worked better for ya! Well this was a preview for the whole songs! Thanks for the info. I have reacted to Cage in case you missed it. Hmm GREAT question haha....✌
@@retroreactions.... I definitely didn't miss your reaction to In The Cage. 😉
👍☺
Try 'Smallcreep's Day'to get the essence of Mike R's solo music.
His work is more 'Prog Genesis' than Tony Banks' work imo.
Strange to hear the two songs in that order. Incidentally, "Fly On A Windshield" isn't longer on the studio LP either. They even added a small piece of the following song "Broadway Melody Of 1974" live.
Hearing the Genesis songs live is kind of redundant. Usually they play the songs 1 to 1 like on the original LP. Genesis is not an improvisation band (ok, you can see the musicians acting). You can say that they don't actually play their works as a live version, they, more or less, just perform them, so to speak. As an experiment, I once overlaid a live recording of "The Musical Box" with the original from "Nursery Cryme" because the sound of the live recording was too bad for me. I was surprised because I only had to make a few corrections to bring music and image into line. That itself says it all. I hope you're not concentrating on live versions now, the original recordings are definitely better in terms of sound.
No, I will always be a studio version kinda guy....this was just a special themed live week. Plus adding video footage makes my "extra work than most reactors" process even longer, so I wouldn't do it very often.. thanks
Have you decided to do The Lamb album? Even if you don't yet know the formula for attacking it.
Oh for sure...All or part of it here on YT, just not sure when....
Have you heard The Original Carpet Crawlers with Peter Gabriel???
Not yet, will likely react to the full Lamb album when I hit 5K subs in about 2 months!
It's a pity the recording isn't that good. I've seen them in Paris, "Porte de Pantin" in the 76 tour (This one with Bill Bruford - Yes's drummer - playing along with Phil Collins, in 77 tour they were already with Chester Thompson). This piece is actually fractured in this recording for it had more parts of "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" Album and Genesis called it "Lamb Stew". It was also the first tour with Phil in main vocals for Peter Gabriel had just left the band. It was amazing although Phil and Bill weren't perfect being both left handed drummers and with very "marked" playing styles. Thanks and Best Regards!
Ok so seems like you like Phil Collins on lead vocal Genesis more. Could you throw in some Peter Gabriel on lead vocals every once in awhile 👍🏻
I like both singers for sure, but in Genesis I do prefer Phil if I had to choose. I wanted to do a PG song, but couldn't find any short songs of decent picture quality on UA-cam.. but be assured I will be reacting to the Peter Gabriel Genesis albums most likely in full eventually! Tons left to discover 🙂
When it came to prog bands, record execs always chose the lamest song from an album to be released as the radio single, thinking general audenieces would not care for complex, extended prog compositions. Unfortunately, if the song became a radio hit (and why not? It still carried the signature sound of the band), it became a hallmark of the band and a favorite of a great many casual fans of the band. Carpet Crawlers is a good example of his phenonemon. It is the crummiest song on The Lamb, got chosen for radio for that reason, was a hit, sort of, and is now fondly remembered and immediately recommended as a sterling example of the band's catalog. Even though it is a crummy Genesis song, being a Genesis song still makes it better tha 99% of the other pablum that gets radio play. When I put The Lamb on a casette tape for car play, it didn't fit. I had to cut one song out, and it was as easy as falling off a log. Bye-bye, Carpet Crawlers. I would have released Fly on a Windshield as the readio single from The Lamb, which is probably why I'm not a record company executive.
These alas did nothing for me! Read a book to it; sort of surprised when it all stopped... ah well.
Thanks for any watch time though!
