DISCLAIMER: when I am refering to the song "Nonetheless", I of course mean the song "Loneliness"; see, that's the problem when you review an album after just listening 2 or 3 times to it, due to it being so new...
Worst to Best, ALL Pet Shop Boys Albums ranked... including NONETHELESS
My Website: www.parsivalag...
1995's Alternative is a compilation but it always felt like an 'album' if not a double album for me. I think of it as my favorite PSB album, then and now. Look at these stunners!: In the Night, Miserabilism, Your Funny Uncle, One of the Crowd, We all feel better in the Dark, Do I have to?, Jack the Lad, Hey Headmaster, A New Life, Was that what it was?, Music for Boys, and probably the all-time coolest PSB song, It must be Obvious.
I love "Alternative"; it was the third Pet Shop Boy release I bought after "Very" and "Bilingual", and is what made me a real fan in the late 90s after being more a casual "fan" before that. But the quality of their b-sides blew me away. But at the same time I think that "Alternative" is kind of obsolete now (as are their remix releases like "Disco"), since they started issuing their "further listening"-sets, which include all those and more tracks...
Which other band offers a steady stream of fabulous b-sides, many worthy of becoming album tracks themselves, over the decades?? Yet again an embarrassment of riches for the PSB fan.
Behaviour, is my favourite LP ever , it changed my life , sounds corny but it’s been the soundtrack to my life , , just lay in a dark room with some good headphones on and let it take you away ❤❤
Nonetheless was the first PSB album I've listened to, and I loved it. Excited to dig in to their other works
You are beginning an incredible journey. Very lucky!
Nice! Their discography is second to none. If I were you I'd start at the beginning with Please and listen in chronological order.
Believe me you will be spoilt
It's fascinating to hear of other people ranking of PSB albums as it will, like other opinions, vary widely. It's truly a testament to their creative genius that they have given the fans 15 enjoyable albums through the decades, and that doesn't even account for the multitude of side projects!!
My favourite album Electric at the bottom of the list! Broke my heart :) Nonetheless... enjoyed listening to your ranking.
I can understand that, since it was my fifth favourite just 3 years ago... like I said: there no bad psb albums
"Electronic" is certainly my favorite of the more recent albums. I had a quick chat with someone who loved "Super" by comparison, which might be my least favorite.
@@vinnym5607 I have to say I really like Super.
Your favourite matches mine. I think Introspective, from its cover art to every single note and beat on this is a perfect album. "Awe" is fantastic word to describe the listening experience. Well done on this video.
My no.1 would be "Behaviour", but i respect your point of view. I think 'Introspective" is also a good recommendation to start journey with PSB, in a way it is very respresentative for the band itself and for the whole late 80s synthpop era. It capcutres the vibe.
First time to check out your video and i enjoyed it - great overview!
thank you
Enjoyed your rankings buoyed by the quality new album! New London Boy and Feel... uh, give me the feels.
New London Boy is my favourite of the new songs at the moment!
Really enjoyed that. Been a psb fan all my life . Im now 55 . Thankyou very much for the time and effort you put into that video. Take care Godbless.
The first single off Nightlife was I do not know what you want but I can’t give it anymore. I feel that Nightlife was a fantastic and underrated album with incredible production and timeless deep cuts
Also the 1st single from "Release" was NOT "I get along" (but "Home and dry").
It's my introductory album to PSB, and it still sounds relevant today❤
...good review, and of course there are many different rankings among the PSB fans, which is a compliment to the band's broad spectrum! Personally very happy about your listings, sharing the same top 3! 😎💖😎
Your video inspired me to give my rankings, too, of PSB studio albums ranked from 15 - 1...
My rankings were based on my level of emotional connection with an album (strongest memories associated with; e.g. where I was at, at that time in my life, happy and / or sad memories) and the likelihood of me enjoying an album from start to end without skipping or fast forwarding... here we go..
( By the way I, too, am conscious that Nonetheless was recently released, so I agree with you that it's likely to change positions in my ranking if I were to do a revised ranking another time. )
15 Nightlife
14 Electric
13 Hotspot
12 Elysium
11 Release
10 Super
9 Please
8 Very
7 Actually
6 Bilingual
5 Yes
4 Nonetheless
3 Behaviour
2 Fundamental
1 Introspective - I always thought I became a fan of PSB through West End Girls or one of the other singles from Please or their singles from the next album, Actually.
However, my strongest memory that resonated with me was with Introspective. I heard it in its entirety from a high school friend Adrian F. He had a copy of it or it was his brother's copy on vinyl and it was such a sublime and life changing experience.
Also, it was the first time I listened to any album fully with the company of a friend on vinyl no less.
My music collecting days (Cassette, CD, Vinyl) were only in its infancy at that time even at the "older" age of around 17 or 18. (Older than a kid of 12 years or under)
I only owned a cassette / CD player at the time.
Unlike your ranking, this was the first time doing so for me; so I don't have any comparison to any previous ranking I've done before. For your ranking, it was interesting to see how you felt Electric dropped from 5 down to 15.
I intend to film a similar video as you've done here on my channel; it's just I am waiting for one of the variants of Box sets of Nonetheless to arrive from overseas.
Thanks for posting your video - I thoroughly enjoyed it as a fellow long-term PSB fan! 🎉❤🎉❤🎉
Great ranking, thank you!
Great list! Fundamental is very underrated. Terrific album! My fave tracks are "I made my excuses," "Casanova" and "Indefinite leave."
I enjoyed the video and also the short samples from the first track of the first album!!
These album rankings are VERY subjective. People thought Behavior was a bad album, but then it grew over time to be a classic. I have hated Release at one point, but it's a grower.
Fundamental (2006) is one of the most underrated albums, and I believe it deserves to be at least in the top 5. It’s a politically charged, anti-war album with very sharp critiques and brilliant melodies. With impeccable production by Trevor Horn and excellent b-sides, I would venture to say it’s the last great album by PSB made in the 'old way'-with time to refine, mature, and release. It’s very consistent and distinct from everything else in the duo’s extensive discography. It’s worth revisiting, and yes, like a fine wine, it has aged very well.
Nightlife blew my doors off when I first played it! It's one of my favorite albums.
For me Very is number one
Insightful ranking. But Electric is excellent. You rank it last, which is ridiculous
I remember when I bought Bilingual being so disappointed by it. It's what you would call "a grower", though. Wonderful tracks all the way through. It just wasn't Very. And Very was, and still is, incredible. You can't say you aren't gonna get into remixes and B-sides and rate Introspective as number one, Stefan! It is a really good album, It might even be their best (up against some bloody stiff competition) but it's all remixes and b-sides. If you are gonna go into that, Discography has to be number 2 for sheer breadth! lol The version of Always on My mind/in my house on Introspective is the best version of the best song in the world. Very interesting to hear you rank them so differently and in such an informed manner than what I would rank them.
Introspective grabbed my attention and put them on my radar, but behaviour is my number one.
Nonetheless has elements and parts which remind me of Elysium, Release, Fundamental and some early stuff.
Also love that you are rocking the Smiths shirt
thank you!
The Smiths are one of my favourite bands...
Behaviour every time
Thumbs up just for 'The Smiths' t-shirt and love of PSB. I grew up listening to the PSB as a teen back in the 80s. Loved everything they did 'Loves comes quickly' has to be my fave song. I stopped listening to them after 'Go West' though. Did watch a youtube vid yesterday and found out they created the album 'Fundamental' with Trevor Horn' so am currently listening to that. Absolutely love 'Introspective' and 'Disco' albumns.
Trevor Horn is one of my top 3 favourite producers ever...
My top 3 pet shop boys albums
1) Bilingual
2) Behaviour
3) Very
I'm so pleased too see someone else agree with me on Bilingual and our choices are on ranking are pretty spot on.
My favourite pet shop boys
The way it used to be from the album.
Excellent video by the way
Neil and Chris always said Behaviour will be the album that will grow on people and of course they were right nearly 35 years on.
Nice video. I have long considered doing a similar video myself.
When did you become a fan? I ask because most of the "old school" fans from the 80's like myself are not that keen on Bilingual (which was clearly a sonic departure for them), whilst many of the people who became fans in the 90s love that album.
I agree with Introspective at #1, although I have it as co-#1 with Please. Those two have always been my favourites and I can never really decide which one I like better.
A couple of corrections: First single from Nightlife was I Don't Know What You Want. New York City Boy was the second. I Get Along was the second single from Release, Home And Dry was the first. The PSB movie was from 1988 not 1989. The story you told about "...seriously" was I believe about "Shameless". "...Seriously" is basically about pretentious rock stars.
I became aware of pet shop boys around the very era, and a real fan when Bilingual came out, so mid 90s (I was born 1982); I already had their early 90s best of when Bilingual came out, so was aware of their 80s work, and loved how they evolved with that album; I think that album made it clear to me that they are more than "Just an 80s act". So you are right about that (me becoming a fan in the 90s). I think "seriously" and "shameless" are both about that; there is a quote from neil (in the further listening booklet of Behaviour) about "How can you expect to be taken seriously" where he says so... "Shameless" is i guess about the same subject but from a more general point of view...
I enjoyed the first PSB singles back in the 80's but never really got into them. Then Behaviour came out. WOW! No joke, that album changed my life. I consider it to be the Pet Sounds (ha) of the Pet Shop Boys. Very was also great: loads of light and fun after the introspectiveness of the previous album.
First album I ever bought was "Disco". Was that considered an album? Was mostly remixes and some new songs. It had In the Night and Paninaro on it, along with some extended mixes. Certainly was great. Certainly allowed for Chris Lowe to flex his skills, along with (I'm guessing) Trevor Horn as the producer. As far as the other albums, there's some hidden classics on some. Anyone remember "I want a dog"? :)
Yes. So much so...that I made a karaoke of it! ua-cam.com/video/iGld08CYUrE/v-deo.htmlsi=oEa-DnkgrW_0G157
I enjoyed watching you share your list. Mine would be generally similar. I agree that Bilingual is underrated...and while Nightlife has some great moments, it was a disappointment after the previous two.
thank you!
Introspective is a fantastic record. Very of its time but superb production and my go to Pet Shop Boys album every time. Also don’t mind Electric! 😊
My favorite PSB album alternates between BEHAVIOUR and VERY, and my Top 5 would probably include SUPER, NIGHTLIFE, and PLEASE. Their only album I don’t listen to that much is ELYSIUM, so that would be my least favorite.
Interesting video. How you couldnt place Disco 1986 album in the list of 15 is 100% criminal. I hear you say at the start of the video not going to include remix albums. Disco is insane has The greatest version of Love Comes Quickly / Shep Pettibone version engineering from another planet on that song easily my fav song from the band. The full horror of Suburbia can't except any alternative version. In the Night awesome as is Paninaro with the sweet yet not so well known very of West End Girls. I argue with myself wether or not the broken glass version is the best. But Disco awww man its insane.
My top 5 albums is ascending order its a tie for first place. To be fare its almost a tie for 3 albums as top place. But if forced and hand cuffed to seperate the top 5 I would pick :
5- Please
4- Behavior
3- Actually
2- Disco
1- Introspective
Aside from Please being just a smidgen less quality than the top 4 seen there I could take either of those 4 albums as their greatest oscar achievement. Left to my own devices and I want a dog / Always in my house / Im not scared this album is almost utter perfection with just a slight glitch to holy grail status with " Alright " not being as epic as the other 5 tracks. Domino Dancing its cute ok sure its great but what if Alright happen to be swapped with Being Boring. Then your getting real close to pure bliss. Nonetheless is a blast I have ot came out today and ya know for the bands age to carve out nostalgia for us still is very commendable.
Love to all PSB's fans.
I don't count Disco as a regular Studio Album (if I did, it would be a 2 hour video including all their remix albums, eps, musicals and so on, haha); but you are absolutely right; the mixes on there are brilliant and in the case of "Suburbia" it is the definite version. I think if one wants to listen to all these remixes and b-sides etc there is the easy way nowadays with the excellent "further listening"-sets, which include all that.
My fav are fundamental and actually and at the bottom, electric.
In the UK, at least, their first single was an earlier version of 'Opportunities (Let's make Lots Of Money). It wasn't a hit. 'West End Girls' followed, as did the hits.
Yes, Electric and Very for me. King of Rome and Into Thin Air are timeless songs
The fact that somebody gave Bilingual a higher mark than Nightlife or Elysium is F****** Nuts . Bye
I had all the cds and many vinyls. Nowadays, I have 240 mp3 I listen all days 😂
I think that Nonetheless is bound to move up your list...... I say that because I, having been a fan since 1986, prefer the big orchestral bombastic sound of Left To My Own Devices... Their absolutely worst work has to be the three albums with Stewart Price (I find them flat, generic, and really poor production, even though I attended their Super tour in New York City, but that was timing.) yet I find Nonetheless to be an imperial work in many senses, if we agree that "imperial" is taken in isolation from chart positions. On Nonetheless, every song almost has a brilliant orchestral music expansion in the middle....that rarely happened on other albums with such indulgence. I refer you to The Secret of Happiness..... while not a dance track, it is a 1960's cinematic journey almost in a black and white French or Italian new wave film..... It is very Valley of the Dolls (if you are familiar with that movie from the 60s.).....
yes I agree; I can see myself putting "Nonetheless" one, two or even three places higher in 4, 5 years; but as I said, I don't want to run into the trap of being easily over-enthusiastic with brandnew albums; it still needs some time to wear off that brandnew-feel for me. but nonetheless, excellent album
@@stefanredelsteinerexperien5957 I agree... I think it was quite courageous of your to even rank it amon their catalogue this early on (one day after its release)... which was what drew me to watch the very good video you have made... :)
For me, the first three albums are top. However, i like PSB music as a whole, they have always been so stylish by their approach. But i don't like their political views of current situations. It puts them in such a weird shadow...
Interesting Release is at the bottom for you. My top 5 (no particular order) are Please, Behavior, Very. Release, and Yes. Elysium would be at the bottom for me.
BEHAVIOUR
Nightlife (1999) was without any doubt, their worst album. Anonymous from start to finish. If it weren't for Tennant's vocals, you wouldn't know it was the PSB's. Fare to say they lost their way abit between around 1998 and 2004.
Are you related to Jurgen K ? #YNWA
Not very familiar with Pet Shop Boys, outside the radio hits. Interesting to hear your enthusiasm for the group.
If you want to dig deeper I recommend to watch "It Couldn`t Happen Here"; their incredible movie... I think that would be the best way to get converted.
Try the new album and after that their 3 2010s albums, you will enjoy the ride for sure!
@@ramonriupaul8089 thanks for the recommendations.
You lost me at 15. Incorrect. This list is awful.
There is no "title track" to Nonetheless.
you are absolutely right; I was talking about "Loneliness", but somehow kept saying "Title Track/Nonetheless"
For me electric would be at least 8 some of your views I found interesting as introspective be my no1 and bilingual vert high up but need to point out that they met in a shop in King's Road not King's Cross and what is the tittle track to nonetheless and not a song called bilingual either but taking you are refering to single. Also in denial we're ment to be about 2 lovers not father and daughter from there stage show closer to heaven
Oh wow; all those years I always thought they met Kings Cross, but you are right; Kings Road it is. Sorry for that. I haven't seen "Closer To Heaven", but at least the Nightlife version of "In Denial" I still think is a father-daughter-song; I remember I've once read a comment by Neil about that. And when I was referring to a song "Noneteless", I meant "Loneliness", sorry for that
What about Alternative? You missed that out!!
I love "Alternative", but this is a compilation, no studio album.
