    Nice collection!
Some thoughts from an old-time collector about handling your coins: unless the coin is in mint state with pristine surfaces, I say don't worry about it. Coppers with red surfaces will tarnish, of course, as may completely fresh silver surfaces (from salt on your hands). But if the silver coin has seen even moderate circulation or the copper is already brown, handle away. None of these coins should be the worse for it.
I say this after having handled similar coins, including fresh uncirculated silver dollars, for as much as 60 years without any negative consequences. If your hands are reasonably clean, no degradation should occur. In the ancient coin hobby, it is believed that handling coins actually benefits them as the oils enhance toning and patina and help protect the coins.
For me, handling really old coins is a major attraction of the hobby and why I crack open any slab I get immediately.

I feel like since you could afford coins like a bust dollar, you could easily upgrade some of these coins like the barber coins or standing liberty quarter.

I'm in awe of your collection. I'm like you I love holding the coins, other collector have a cow. The coins in my collection are mine for life, I would not sell a one. When I do upgrade, I gift the old coin to a young collector. To carry on the love of the hobby.

I just completed a Dansco Type Set. I thought that was an expensive set to complete, but yours takes the cake; a Flowing Hair dollar slot and two draped bust dollar slots? Brutal. 😂

Yeah, it's a long term project. Coins were a lot cheaper in the 1940s when this book was made. I definitely will not be filling all of these holes at today's prices, but I really enjoy seeking out the super early types.
Thanks for your comment, and congratulations on finishing your set.

Dude you’re killing me with the handling of these coins. Touch the coin via the rims only. Get them out of this album and into a nice dansco. Or 2x2 flips. I’d even go as far as airtight capsules for your collection. Thanks for sharing but definitely get these preserved.

Looks like most of his set is made of circulated coins, so it's not actually damaging them. In the case of cleaned coins it's usually beneficial to touch them.

It is challenging to find an album with spots for the older coins. I've actually switched to a new set of Whitman albums with even more slots to fill. It's a three album set (Whitman numbers 9434, 9435, and 9453). The first is United States Type Set Small Coins, the second is United States Type Set Large Coins, and the third is U.S. Gold Type Set. These are better because they have the plastic strips to protect the coins and so you can see both sides.

I come back to this video every few months to look at these amazing coins. It's kind of inspired me to attempt to collect a complete U.S. type set starting in the 1700's. Also, if you ever are interested in a similar album that holds all of these coins in a more protective way, you can check out both the Whitman #9434 and #9435 Type albums, or the Library of Coins albums.
Also, the wreath cent and liberty cap coppers are some of the most appealing coins I've seen for those types, they are beautiful.

@@treeclimberdave3095 You're welcome! I really enjoy viewing other people's type collections, and yours is by far my favorite I have seen.

@@MP-ft8de You're right. Most of the remaining holes are pretty tough, but I have filled two since the video. I've added an 1870 dollar and also a holed 1796 dime. I also upgraded the capped bust cent. Since I've now run into really expensive coins to fill the remaining holes, I've transitioned to working on a loose type set of coins that circulated in the American Colonies including colonial coppers as well as Spanish, English, French, and other foreign coins that were in use here in the 1600's, 1700's, and 1800's. The Spanish coins minted in Mexico and South America are particularly interesting because the early ones are all hand struck and one of a kind.

I really loved the coins you thoughtfully acquired & was most impressed with your Very Early U. S. Coins of different denominations. Thank You for sharing. I have seen many of the Type Coins over the years but the very Early Ones Are Truly Rare and a treat to see; I also appreciated you handling some of them & holding them in your hand kind of connecting with their history and showing both sides, bearing in mind there are protocols such as using white cotton gloves while carefully handling collector coins or by handling them by holding them only on the edges (for those that may watch and not know this). Best Regards To You, & may you have good fortune in hunting down & filling any of the remaining spaces in your collection.

Thank you for your thoughts. I've had a great time putting this set together. I've tried hard to assemble a group that looks nice together, with clear enough details to see, but also showing the signs of decades of use. Good point about safe handling. Because I'm interested in well circulated coins, the use of gloves is not so critical for my collection, but it is absolutely best practice for collections of higher grade coins.

Awesome Type Set, got to ask how long have you working on this set ? Have you added to it ? I'm asking because I'm working on a set for 15+ years or so. The older coin are getting out of reach. Being retired for 6 years now, money is a little tighter, but I will get there. The thing is, know one to give the set to, that would keep it and all to it. I have a large family, but it would be sold before I'm cold. It's always been my goal for me to put a nice set together. There just something about the history and the thought of the people that may have had it. A payment of goods or labor. To use it for food and what it would have bought or what was going on in history the year it was minted. So I will not stop putting it together till its done or I am. Please take care and be safe..

Awesome type set, man this thing must cost a fortune to fill with even just legible examples of some of these coins. Do they make a modern type set book with all of these slots? I’ve been working on a gold type set but when I’m done I’m thinking about starting one of these bigger type sets. The late 1700s and early 1800s gold coins are just too expensive gonna have to cut it off at classic head pieces.

I appreciate your concern for my coins. I enjoy handling them, and I believe I am not doing them any harm. Regarding Dansco albums, they do not have spaces for the earlier coins which I enjoy the most. I did, however, find some old Whitman albums in the style of Dansco that do have spaces for the early types, and I have transitioned to these so that I can see both sides of each coin, and also to give them better protection.
